  • Hi everyone!!
    Exciting news: we have decided to start a new mini series right here on UA-cam called our "introductory drill" series! These are the basic drills that we use whenever we see a new pitcher or beginner pitcher, regardless of age!
    This series is great for pitchers who need to work on their whip or their fundamental mechanics!
    Today we will be looking at the 3 swing whip drill, which works on developing proper forearm fire as well as correct hip engagement!
    If you want more whip drills, drills for developing mechanics, power drills and more, make sure you check out Fastpitch Power+!

    That’s how I was taught to throw a drop ball not a fastball but that was ten years ago. It’s crazy to see how much has changed.

    I am getting confused. Hips are supposed to turn when hand comes down but shoulder isn't supposed to turn, right? However, when I tell my daughter to turn hips, like yours, but her shoulders end up turning towards the catcher along with her hips. But you are saying not turn shoulders. It seems your shoulders are turning as well a long with your hips. Am I taking the taking the term "hips only, no shoulders," too literally? TIA

    Love it! My daughter has been doing this drill with her coach. This is a great video to slow it down so she can see.

    This is an awesome drill thanks. My girl just started with a new pitching coach. He is teaching her how to pull down on her lat muscles, and to whip.

    Training a brand new 14U pitcher and couldn't figure out whip to save my life...this was great easy to show them....heck I think I can pitch now :)

    Love this video. As a mad golfer all the positions you emphasize in the first drill look very similar to the body positions of a golf swing. All of that makes perfect sense to me.

      Even the one, two, three then go aspect of the drill is a pattern we practice in golf all the time and its how I teach proper hip movement in the swing.

    Amazing video. I’m coaching u15 and I have 4 or 5 girls who want to pitch and I am struggling to help them. Thank you for giving us some drills and things for me to look for.

    I coach 8u girls. I’ve watched a ton of videos on beginner pitching drills and this video was so simple and corrected so many problems so quickly. Still plenty of mechanics issues with my pitchers but this drill fixed a bunch of problems instantly. 🙏 Thank you! 🙏

    Great videos /drill... Do you say that the hips lead the elbow/whip? Thx

    I love to watch these, and I love pitching myself, I was wondering how does your thigh get used to the hit of the glove? I had tried for a long time and never succeeded. Always ended up with a massive bruise and it would hurt for the longest time. Is there a trick? Or is it just one of those things to get used to?

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому

      you dont have to hit your thigh with your glove! to be honest for whatever reason I only hit my thigh during drills, when I full pitch I dont. If you don't hit it it's actually better because some coaches argue that batters can time you better when you hit your thigh.

    When my daughter was originally taught this method of pitching, she wouldn't flick her wrist and essentially just threw a flip change. Is this a common issue when doing this method? Her current instructor is teaching more of the "hello elbow" (finishing in a fist). Instead of palm up elbow down, its more of palm away. When I try to teach myself, it seems much less stressful on my shoulder to pitch your way, but my daughter just can't get the "flick". Thoughts?

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому +1

      It's not that that's an issue with whip/forearm fire, but it is a common issue for pitcher who throw a flip change as opposed to another kind of changeup! Very frequently I see pitchers who throw flip changes or peel drops have issues with correct wrist snap for the fastball. They end up throwing it with the same kind of wrist and fingers in the change or drop than the fastball

    Should the hand/wrist hit the hip or slightly brush against the hip?

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому

      for certain pitchers/certain body types that can happen naturally. I personally don't teach it intentionally because I have had waaaaay too many students come to me having been taught to do that and ended up with bruised forearms, swollen wrists/hands etc.

    Thank you in advance for video! Coached my daughter who is now 40 throughout high school. Working with my granddaughter who will turn 12 in August. She is pitching for a 14u club team with great success. We currently pitch 100 pitches per workout so average 300 practice pitches a week on top of her team practice. Question? In your opinion how many practice pitches should a middle school age pitcher pitch per week on average. BTW: you're awesome for what you do to help these girls go to college for free!

    It looks like you are throwing drop balls in this drill, is that right? Could it also be done with the higher finish of a fastball?

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому

      This is for a fastball! The finish for the fastball does not need to be much higher, otherwise the pitcher ends up lifting from the shoulder and it takes away from the whip

    • @allisonpettigrew7772
      @allisonpettigrew7772 2 роки тому

      But you’re turning your hand over like a drop ball, so do you teach beginners it’s okay to turn your hand over in a fastball? Because that’s bad mechanics

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому

      @@allisonpettigrew7772 you don't force the hand to turn over, the hand turns over naturally as a result of the hand firing through and then relaxing. Watch any of the college softball games and you will see

    AHHHHHHh!! squeeze knees together! That's what I can tell her. She still bowling slightly. Better than used to be but could always improve.

    • @FastpitchPower
      @FastpitchPower  2 роки тому

      Yes! That is a cue I like to give young pitchers. The drive through is really created by hips, glutes and core but that can be difficult for young pitchers to understand!

    • @anthonyz5671
      @anthonyz5671 2 роки тому

      @@FastpitchPower I showed her this and told her about squeezing knees and it clicked mentally. Now just need to do it. Her biggest issue is she's never been very athletic or mechanically smooth. lol
      Thanks again

    Why are you rotating your wrist? Why not leave your hand palm up after ball release?
