Coloratura soprano Susanne Elmark sings Queen of the Night's aria "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" (in Danish) from W. A. Mozart's opera "Die Zauberflöte"
Oooh, I like her take on this! Between the "sarcastic laughter" interpretation, and her lovely legato passages, she's got some beautiful things happening!
What I really love about her interpretation here, other than the spectacularly done laughter staccatos, is that she sings it like she's the hero of this story, because in her mind she is. I don't get that impression from the other versions, brilliant though they are in their own ways.
Also, as someone with no knowledge of opera or knowledge of the story The Magic Flute tells, this is the only version I’ve seen where I understood the staccatos were MEANT to be portraying laughter.
How everybody suddenly became experts in voice coloration and opera... 😐 I wish somebody would timetravel and record Mozart's original queen of the night singing it and upload it here on youtube with no title. I would sit the whole day munching popcorn and just read the comments about how much better Damrau sings it.... This is s beautiful, excellent interpretation. ❤ I love the different interpretation and colour every singer brings with her.
Ordem D'Avis Diana only sounds better on Queen of the Night because she is a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano. If you look up the video of Diana singing Doll Song you will be able to hear how much uncontrolled drama she has to her voice. It’s her voice type that you prefer. Diana does not sound better because of talent, it’s because her voice is physically different.
I know Diana Damrau is everybody’s favorite queen of the night, but this one gives her a little run for her money. Susanne Elmark had a different interpretation of the emotions conveyed throughout the song, but the emotions were conveyed so well in both
she sings this perfectly!! she sings it actually pretty light!! although my favorite is Diana Damrau who sings it very angry, but this one is actually a bit "crazy" and self - absorbed! :)
A beautiful tone and her use of the staccato as laughter is, of course, wonderful. I also love the costume. It's simple, but beautiful, especially with the "stars" on her skirt.
Normally I like Diana Damrau for this one; but Susanne Elmark is - if not up there - then very close. There is more of a sneer in Elmark - if that is watering down Damrau's caustic hatred. Really in truth a question of chemistry Diffent acidity; but same decomposing effect. One reason for the growing number of singles in this neck of the woods.
I don't think German sopranos are going to be extinct any time soon, so why not just enjoy a different and yet very beautiful performance? I mean, you can still go check hundreds of videos of the very same aria in German.
LYRICS : Hvor hævnen raser, I mit vrede hjerte. Dod of fortvivlen Flammer i mit bryst. Din hånd skal gi’ Sarastro dødens smerte. Sarastro dødens smerte. Hvis ikke, da vil jeg fornægte dig Hvis ikke, da vil jeg fornægte dig aaaaaah .... da vil jeg fornægte dig
Ono Ramírez What?! Comparing her to Damrau is like comparing me singing Pagliacci to Caruso. This lady fudges half the notes in the score. Fair is fair, though, this is a tortuous and difficult aria to sing. Damrau is a world class pro. There's a video here of Damrau singing at least part of it with Harry Potter conducting. It's him, really :-)
Lucia Popp :) I find her performance is the strongest, cause it riches the highest level in absolutely all small and big technical and artistic details. Damrau is very good in performing , but there is a technical moments that Lucia makes easyer and brighter, like a bird.
@Julietta Gulua @Altsz @Ono Ramirez I like all three of those people for different reasons. I feel the definite power in Diana's version, the very classical and striking version of Christina's version, and I feel Lucia Popp has a very controlled version of singing the song as her staccatos are a lot slower than others.
Danish is one of the most muffled, indistinct languages on Earth which makes this translation rather unfortunate but the overall performance, musically as well as dramatically, is good.
This role is made for a dramatic coloratura soprano, even though she's very good, she's not dramatic enough. And I'm not a fan of the danish translation, I think Operas should be performed in the language they were written in. But nonetheless good job.
Actually, Mozart wrote it for a soprano who had a "trick voice." It had a very strange, particular place it was comfortable in, so you end up with crazy vocal acrobatics in a time period when you didn't have much of anything going above a high C. So, the role is uncharacteristic for the period in history. Hearing an opera in the original language is great if you're a language-nerd or studied the opera to hell and back or have supertitles; but if none of these things are applicable, I think having it in the language of the area is best; no good watching and listening if you can't understand a word -- especially when so many directors seem to be going for strange, avant-garde takes where the plot and characters have little to no real influence on the design or blocking.
This is like a super late response, but the magic flute is considered an easy gateway into opera and this version was directed towards getting children into the fine arts, hens the translation.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a Freemason during the last seven years of his life. The Masonic organization played an important role in his life and work. Mozart was admitted as an "apprentice" in the masonic lodge of Vienna called "Zur Wohltätigkeit" ("Beneficence") on December 14, 1784.1 He was promoted to the rank of "companion" (see salary increase) on January 7, 1785 , and became "Master Mason" (see exaltation (freemasonry)) "in a short space of time" .1 On April 22, 1785, Mozart already appears as a master Mason in the archives of the lodge. Mozart also attended meetings of another lodge, called "Zur wahren Eintracht" ("True Concordia"). Both lodges practiced the Zinnendorf rite.2 According to Otto Erich Deutsch, this lodge was "the largest and most aristocratic in Vienna. Mozart, as the best of the musicians brothers, was welcomed in all the lodges ». He was sponsored by the naturalist Ignaz von Born.3 Mozart's own lodge, "Zur Wohltätigkeit", joined two others in December 1785, under the imperial reform of Freemasonry (the Freimaurerpatent, "Masonic decree") of the same month, and thus Mozart came to belong to a lodge called "Zur Neugekrönten Hoffnung" ("New Crowned Hope"). According to the Masonic documents that have been preserved, Mozart was well remembered by his brother Freemasons and many of his friends were also Freemasons. Mozart's musical collaboration with masonic lodges begins even before he was initiated as a Mason, since many of his friends and employers also belonged to Freemasonry.
I hate these subjective judgments stated as facts, and making it seem like some kind of competition!! Even if you are right (which is doubtful), we don't need to know that here!
I was like wait a minute what's wrong with it, It took me a while to to realize this was in danish & that the text weren't translating XD sounds weird but not bad
Danish has three letters in addition to the latin alphabet Ææ, Øø and Åå. Æ is pronounced like the e in "leg," ø is pronounced ether like the german ö or like the u in "turn" and å is pronounced like the o in "show."
Yes, it's supposed to be for a darker voice than in this video, but I guess it's usually tough to cast a soprano who is dramatic and also has easy coloraturas and high notes. So I guess they often cast lighter voices instead for that part. But it does sound much better with a dramatic voice. I'm a light coloratura and I sing this role next week. I guess they couldn't find someone with a darker tone so they picked me.
Because the performance is in Denmark. In countries where the producers want their audience to understand what is going on, and want opera to live as a contemporary entertainment option, it is completely appropriate for singspiel to be performed in the native language of the audience.

The story that is told is nothing more than the sign of a mysterious reality, which we have to interpret. When Mozart writes The Magic Flute, he returns to his childhood character seeing the funny side of things, laughing at any trifle and converting into divertimentos, preoccupations that would have darkened the spirit of more taciturn people. He is attracted to write an opera for his friend Schikaneder. The latter brought the idea of a fantastic story by Wieland, entitled "LULU" which was about a Magic Flute that allowed its owner to overcome all obstacles. so smooth tone
One of the greatest performances of this aria I have EVER heard! Total control and every note articulated and no nuances missed! BRAVA!!!
Susanne Elmark is amazing as the Queen of Night. It's awesome ! Vidunderlig !
Her voice is very similar to Lucia Popp's. Simply beautiful.
Lucia Popp seemed to have a larger voice than her, but I do understand what you’re talking about

funny to hear it in danish.
Saw the many comparison of queen of the night versions miss elmark stands out quite allot. That laughed was done perfectly
Нет никакого крика, легато и стаккато в чистом виде! Настоящий Моцарт!
she sings this perfectly!! she sings it actually pretty light!! although my favorite is Diana Damrau who sings it very angry, but this one is actually a bit "crazy" and self - absorbed! :)
Really good interpretation and special effects.
Her tone is more pure than others who have tried, but she seemed to be slightly short of breath and an 1/8th of a note too fast.
beautiful voice so soft like silk
A beautiful tone and her use of the staccato as laughter is, of course, wonderful.
I also love the costume. It's simple, but beautiful, especially with the "stars" on her skirt.
