  • Can an arrow with only two feather fletchings fly straight? In this video I test a two feather fletch design to see if it can fly accurate enough to hit a target at 18 yards! Slow motion!

The straightness of the shaft, the head and the bow itself is what does most of the work. The Fletchings just help stabilize for longer ranges.

Cool. Glad to see you responding to questions like this. It increases everyone's knowledge, which is a good thing.

I attempted to make 2 fletched arrows outta carbon arrows that lost two of their fletchings. I figured the fletching on the carbon was artificial so wouldn't have any bend like a real fletching but it did... Two times I put a fletching on that didnt match the other one and it was quite the show watching that arrow "fly" I made a proper one now outta bamboo and shes beautiful. Cheers mate

If two-feather fletching works, then won't one-feather fletching also work?
Stephen Hahn of the Archery Supplies YT video series has shown many times that three-feather fletched arrows shot after losing one fletch (by arrow-arrow shearing contact at the target) fly just like full three-feather fletched arrows. It can't be a question of arrow balance, since two-feather fletching from a three-feather fletched arrow is not symmetrical, and thus imbalanced, around the shaft.
Interesting idea arising from your video. Has anyone tested one-feather fletching?

It has always amused me when people ask if two fletch arrows are accurate, people that depended on the accuracy of their arrows to make meat and survive on a day to day basis used two fletch arrows for thousands of years. It would be like saying a 70 year old man that worked on cars his entire life knew nothing about fixing a car..

Are these arrows better suited to bows without carved arrow rests? im wondering if the bottom fletch could "catch" the arrow rest and pitch pole off the bow string.

To this day it still freak's me out how the arrow shaft bends as its flying

Depends on your bow and/or how you shoot it. A lot of archers accept Archer's Paradox and will worry about arrow spine and things like that. They forget that there's more than just "western archery." The Comanche created a bow with a "half nock" on the top limb, in which they only cut 1 slightly larger groove instead of the usual 2. This makes the string go diagonal down the bow and so in the middle of the bow, the arrow behaves as if it as closer to the center, carving inward to make a grip causes it to become almost like a center shot bow. This was especially useful in nearly point blank shots where normally the bending of the arrow shaft would cause accuracy to be all over the place but they were able to ride up alongside a buffalo and fire accurate, powerful close range shots into them, mere feet away.
Asian thumb release, Slavic and Saracen archery shoot on the right side of the bow, the mechanics of which eliminate paradox. Korean archers were known for being deadly accurate even when using their enemies' arrows, including broken arrows.

😏👍you nock, you rock! I subscribe. I think it's safe to assume the Cherokee-style two fletch shoots just as well. Isn't giant river cane just early carbon? Thanks Yonder.

Yup, native Americans wouldn't have used them if they didn't fly straight

Boy those sure do wiggle coming off that revurve but it's definitely spinnin. Would like to have seen some longer ranges to see how well it straightens out, like 40yd. Cool vid though.

@@Daylon91 Yea, true. Just thought there may have been something more to it considering how many other tribes made 3 fletch arrows. And it isn't all that hard to get feathers.

@@legacy1776sibes it's easier to make two fletched arrows as well I just made three 3 fletched and one 2 fletched. With a two fletched arrow it's easier to get the angle of the feathers right only being 2 having to line up.
