      In the four years I've owned my Tesla EV I have charged over 50% for free at a minimum. Last year my charging at home was roughly $30.00 and on a road trip for a solar eclipse about $100.00. $130.00 to travel just under 9,000 miles ain't so bad. Now I have solar on my roof with a metering plan that will return $hundreds at the end of the year with no electric bill. Add in a longer road trip and my out of pocket will be just under $150.00 for the year. Yes I had to pay for the solar but the net metering will return that to me in several years. With no home electric bill, no home gas bill and very minimal vehicle refueling I am and will be well ahead financially. No maintenance costs save $130.00 last month for a twelve volt battery (after 4 years) installed out the door at my house. Ya gotta be crazy to stick with gas. The only maintenance I've done is replacing windshield wiper fluid, and replacing a broken sun visor. Costs me approximately $7 for a "fillup" at home to travel a nominal 259 miles. Everything is improving with EVs rapidly with each passing year. EV's are a certainty to replace ICEs in the next ten years ... only a fool will want to buy an ICE within about 2 years from now. The savings, convenience, reliability, and performance are simply incomparable.

And just so you know, my previous three cars were all Ford Fiestas which were frugal by petrol car standards. Over the six years of diminishing lease tariffs before I became the fully paid up owner I actually saved more money than it cost to buy the car. Compared to the cost of owning my previous ICE cars it was basically free. THAT is how much money EVs save and once people realise this they flock to EVs with evangelical haste. And by the way, if I was buying my EV as a business vehicle in the UK I would have saved thousands of pounds more on tax reliefs through Benefits In Kind which means I'd pay 2% tax instead of the ICE car tariff of up to 37%.

    Minor tweak here - Supercharging, which I only do on roadtrips - is pretty close to filling up at a gas station. The reason why is that you don't get the stated range when doing highway miles. For example, on my Tesla Model Y LR - I get about 220 miles of Interstate driving (75mph) in normal conditions (70F, light/no wind) using my 72kWh battery. Most of the Superchargers in my area charge $0.37/kWh or $26.64 or $0.12/mile. If we assume the 28mpg SUV gas equiv gets about 25 mpg at 75mph - that works out to $3 per gallon (which is about what is costs in my area right now). So, it's about a wash. I also excluded charging losses since they are less than 1% for DC to DC charging.
    I live in Colorado - so 75mph is the speed limit for much of our Interstates not in the mountains. In reality, I typically drive slightly faster (5 to 9 over depending on traffic and conditions). Also, wind and cold also impact the efficiency too (also true for gas cars). However, 90% of my charging is done at home and I do fully charge before a long roadtrip - so I do get that initial 220 miles at the home charging rate.
    My Telsa app says that I have saved about $1500 vs a typical 28mpg gas SUV with my mix of driving and charging. I do about 15k miles per year.

It seems when talking about Tesla depreciation, very few seem to account for the fact that Tesla will sell a car for $70,000 and then the next day or week sell that exact same car for $55,000 which immediately depreciates that $70,000 quicker than normal.

    • @nguyep4
      @nguyep4 2 місяці тому

      @@anthonyscott5134Your example is cherry picking. Tesla priced high during the production ramping phase and demand was higher than supply. They were at 900k per year production runrate compared to today at 2M. The scarcity at that time couple with lowest interest rate make that Tesla was able to priced $5k+ above the normal price. And Tesla relentlessly driving cost of production down, apply that cost saving to the consumers when appropriate... similar reason why used cars were above the asking price during covid as there were chips shortage for news cars. Used cars on high demand and low inventory. Tesla doesn't have dealership network, they see the market price in real time and able to make adjustments in real time. EV as a whole will get cheaper and cheaper which will depreciate even more. Unlike ICE car, it only goes up in price.

      @@anthonyscott5134 You're lacking Context. I remember back in 2020 Tesla introduced the RWD Model Y for 45K. It IMMEDIATELY sold out to a waiting list of 6 months. They discontinued that one but still even the $55K LR version ended up with a ONE YEAR waiting list. A LOT of people started buying them then turning around and selling them for a $10K premium (Like Carvana). In response, Tesla started increasing the price every week by $2-3K to STOP people from buying while they caught up to the waiting list. Prices got all the way up to $75-80K before supply finally caught up with demand. They basically DOUBLED their production in 1 year! At this point they reset their prices to what they ORIGINALLY were. With that lesson learned, they started they Cybertruck at around $130K. Now that they've dropped the price to $100K, it's the best selling EV truck in the USA. Next they're coming out with an $80K version and sales will probably double.

    @GeeDeeBird 2 місяці тому +5

    Wow! There are some really desperate EV haters out there! So Ben, here's MY EV rant. Maybe you can put your impeccable research skills to the task of fact checking me.
    Gas up time versus fast charge time is a completely false comparison of the relative operating costs. It rarely takes less than 10 minutes to gas up, but you have to do it at least once a week. That's more than 500 minutes a year assuming there's never a line at the pumps, which is a very generous assumption.
    Most people with EVs have home chargers they use once or twice a week. It takes less time to plug and unplug an EV than it does to warm up a gas car in cold weather - maybe 10 or 15 seconds (30 minutes a year). Few car owners take more than a half dozen trips greater than 200 miles a year (well within the 80 percent range of nearly every EV). If they have to charge from 10 to 80 percent twice per trip at the high time of 40 minutes, that's 480 minutes - and that's a very high estimate. As a side note: The EPA would be doing everyone a big favor if, instead of city, highway mileage estimates, it gave 100-10 percent, and 80-10 percent range estimates for EVs. That's much more useful information for a prospective EV buyer.
    Now, add on the time (and money) spent on oil changes, coolant flushes, air filters, fuel filters belts, hoses and all the other "routine maintenance" required only for internal commission engines and transmissions.
    Finally, lest we forget, the average EV owner spends between $3000 and $4000 less per year for charging versus buying gas. How much of your time is that worth? Add it all up and tell me, which type of vehicle requires more of your time and treasure to keep rolling? Honestly, it's not even close.
    Are there obstacles? Yes! We need better charging solutions for apartment dwellers and urban areas. We need to keep extending the range, reducing the charge time, expanding the infrastructure, developing less expensive, more environmentally friendly batteries and motors. And the manufacturers have to keep closing the price gap. But, even if no further advances were possible, the EVs, batteries and charging we have right now are more efficient and environmentally friendly than ICEVs.
    The ONLY people who honestly think EVs require more time or money to own and operate are people who have never owned an EV. You can deny it all you want, but the truth is inescapable. The future of personal transportation is electric.

    6:55 A recent Frontline investigation revealed how the oil and gas industry used the promise of recycling to sell more plastic. Down the road will they do a similar story investigating how EV manufacturers used the promise of battery recycling to sell more EVs? What percentage of used EV batteries are currently being recycled?

      I don’t believe anything put out by the mainstream media. That includes PBS. When it comes to recycling batteries, it’s not about the environment. The best motivator for stuff is greed. Recycling batteries means they get to use the material again that’s worth a lot. They’re not doing it out of some joy or environmental crap. They’re doing it out of greed, but it does help the environment.

    A lot of the depreciation data is cherry picked taking post pandemic highs as compared to recent lows. They don’t talk about falling new EV prices which are a good thing for new adoption but have driven depreciation of used EVs, not quality issues.

      @@tbl268 You say that as if it is not possible to replace a battery.
      Previous owner of my 2011 Leaf replaced the battery in 2021.
      I am hoping solid state batteries will be a mature technology by 2031: so that I can get a capacity upgrade, while staying in the same weight envelope.
      Capacity upgrade is already possible: but involves replacing the springs due to the added weigh, and probably eats into the GVWR.

      @@tbl268 That's not true. Did you miss where Ben pointed out the batteries have 100,000 or more miles under warranty. A new study shows batteries degrade at 1.5-1.8% a year. They are shown to and expected to last for over 200,000 miles.

    Since the AI used extreme single case scenario to parlay it's viewpoint, I love to counter with my experience talking to a 2016 Model X owner at a supercharging station about charging costs. He bought his when Tesla promoted supercharging for life and his cost to charge after 60,000 miles, $0. ZERO dollars!!!!

    I spent $85.00 in one year (October to October) to charge my Mini Cooper SE (full electric) - granted, I did not put on a lot of miles (3,500), but at 2.43¢ per mile, I can't see any ICE car coming even close! Also note that I live in Minnesota and it kind of gets cold in Winter. The most I spent was in January ($13.00)

    It's not like ICE vehicles aren't software dependent, too. As far as pricing goes, my 2024 Kona Electric Limited cost less than my last 2 new cars. I checked last week and one of the car buying sites offered me more than I paid for my Kona.

    Despite my many years of owning ice vehicles doing my own repairs doing my own maintenance and really enjoying it even in the case of modifying a GTI, once I purchased my v and took that chance I have to say I can't get into another ice car without feeling like it's a step back.
    This past weekend I had to do an oil change on my wife's ice vehicle as she refuses to go Eevee and was reminded about how nasty the process is.
