In Canada and Alaska we call them Caribou and they are not just on the tundra, there are Woodland and Mountain Caribou too.
The carrots are more than a treat on Christmas Eve, by the way. The reindeer, not to mention Santa himself, have to expend so many calories that if they tried to make the run only on what they could eat before takeoff, they would starve to death before the end. The cookies for Santa and the carrots for the reindeer are vitally important if they're to finish the run. So go ahead and leave lots of carrots. You might even leave two for Rudolph. Yummy... delicious... sweet, juicy carrots... mmmmm.
Oh, and the image of Rudolph with the bright, bulbous nose is inaccurate, based largely on the fact that most Americans don't know what a reindeer looks like and imagine them as whitetail or mule deer. If this was what Rudolph looked like, he'd go blind, unable to see past his own schnoz. No, the light from a red-nosed reindeer actually shines out through the nostrils. That's where the extra capillaries come in. The light is actually generated in the blood by chemicals that come from luminescent lichens. That's why the light is red. This also allows the reindeer to direct the light forwards and away from his own eyes.
It also helps to deter potential predators. Instead of a reindeer, all the predator sees are what look like two glowing, red eyes. Scares them off in a nonce.
They are so cute! It didn't show on the map but we have wild reindeer here in Iceland too. Although I have never seen one in the wild, just in the zoo.

Actually, that's a common misconception. I'm a member of Santa's reindeer team (I got bitten by a were-reindeer some years ago) and I can verify that not all Santa's reindeer are female. The flying reindeer, rangifer volaris, has a much later antler cycle than ground reindeer. This is because their antlers are part of their flight system, providing stabilization and some additional lift as they fly. This has to coincide with the snowy months, when they must fly the greatest distances in search of food.
If you look at my antlers... well, imagine you can see them. They're just starting to come in now. They'll be fully formed in December and won't come off until February or early March. And i can assure you, I am definitely a boy.
That said, Rudolph was indeed a boy, but he retired over half a century ago. Since then, there have been other red-nosed reindeer, descendants of his, who have led the sleigh team. These are always given the ceremonial name Rudolph while on the run. Last year, I had the privilege of being Rudolph. So there have indeed been female Rudolphs.

Rudolph is a boy! Yes males lose their antlers in winter. Christmas falls into first week of winter. Usually males lose em mid winter. But doesn't mean there antlers WILL fall off. They MAY fall off!!! Yes its a fact they lose em in winter but not will always falloff. This also involves mule deer whhitaildeer fallow deer ECT ECT. There are nons of photos of male deer of all breeds still having there antlers in winter. So Santa's reindeer are not all female. Blitzen Donner Comet Prancer and Dasher are the boys and rest are girls. That's my thearoy there is only one man in this entire world that knows the true gender of his reindeer. And its..JOHN CENA !!!!!!!!!!!!!Lol jk sorry had to put that in there. That one man is father Christmas aka Santa Clause. The true legend, Master, Expert of reindeer.
