On the evening of November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall and the inner-German border fell due to a press conference in the GDR. When the news reached the West German parliament in Bonn, the parliamentarians spontaneously started singing the national anthem of the Federal Republic of Germany.
@@randomgermanstuff291 Thank you! I'm a history teacher from Sweden, so I figured it had something to do with November 9th but not how it was connected to this spontaneous singing. Thank you once again, really like this video.

How many other countries have opposing politicians all stand up and sing their national anthem? Germany has become the country it was always meant to be.
@@Timothy001 I do it interesting that you can see the different parties simply by when they stand. The more nationalist party had their members stand up almost immediately while less nationalist parties did so last. Couldn’t resist coming here after watching Bornholmerstraße (2014) this morning and seeing the stasioberst attempt singing it…. Unity, justice and freedom for the German fatherland. Good stuff! What a day it was! I was living in Berlin at the time and I was waiting for the Ossis to come across the bridge that night. Didn’t get much sleep, and it was hell the following morning at Tempelhof for me. No complaints though… I wasn’t the only person with a bad hangover.

I believe this was because of the fall of the Berlin Wall. When the West-German Parliament got the news they started singing the anthem. If you don't know how the fall of the wall came to be its actually a prety funny and interesting story. It wasn't planned at all a because of some mistakes during interviews and press conferences there was mass confusion resulting in the people believing they could cross the checkpoints to the other side the policejust let them through becuase they thought they had to because of the confusing statements made in an interview with a politician. The resulting party in the city ensured it never closed again. (there may be some mistakes in my interpretation I highly recommend watching videos about it is bonkers) Edit: here's a vid about it: ua-cam.com/video/Mn4VDwaV-oo/v-deo.html
It was a mistake on the script. The real time the wall should have become obsolete was the following day but the script said immediately. Everyone watching the convention heard him say immediately and went to the wall.
Well, I could probably sing it if someone else knows the lyrics (has been a few years). However, I would expect polititians in parliament to know the lyrics. And no, we are not the USA, we don't know stuff that well. Pretty sad to still hear that accusation.
