If only Raimi had actually gotten to make his version of the film. No Venom, Harry's story is wrapped up as a sub-plot, and Sandman is the main villain. The studio pushed for Venom and for Harry to be a third main antagonist, and we got this. The casting in the Raimi movies is literally perfect. Toby McGuire can be dorky and awkward, which is very different from Peter in the comics, but it's perfect for what Raimi wanted to do in these movies: show an honest and well-meaning person and pit them into situations that tempt them to betray themselves.
Raimi's Spider-Man 3 is like X-Men: The Last Stand. Both were hated by critics and fans alike but each actually has at least a few good scenes--the creation of Sandman, Magneto using his powers to throw around cars and trucks on the highway, Magneto moving the Golden Gate Bridge.
Yup. And they're both the disappointing conclusion to a trilogy where the second is considered the best, and they both add unnecessary storylines (Symbiote/Sandman and the cure) instead of focusing the big one that was being set up in the previous films (New goblin and Phoenix). The biggest difference is that SM3 is a little better because at least Raimi directed while for X-Men 3 we got Brett Ratner...
@@ZzMattizZ also, spider-man 3 is still enjoyable despite facts like raimi outright hating venom and purposely putting him as little. yet despite that when he got venom right it was enjoyable. makes you wonder wonder good venom would have been had raimi been on a good mood
At least X-Men got better with First Class, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past, Deadpool, and Logan before it went downhill with Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix. Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man was good but the time Marvel ruined Spider-Man I was done.
You know, they could have just cut out that one shot of the scientists at the particle lab and it still would have made sense, suggesting the machine came on via sensory activation
Fun-Fact: Sam Raime didn't want Venom in the movie. He wanted to focus on Sandman and the failing relationship between Peter and M.J. While I would have preffered to have the Peter-MJ relationship story with a better-written Symbiote story, it would have been nice to just focus on the two good things. Oh, and not shove the Gwen Stacy and the Harry-forcing-MJ-to-break-up subplot into all of this.
I loved the scene when Peter and Harry are fighting in Harry's mansion. Aside from the "strawberries" line before hand, it was really legit. I liked seeing Tobey Macguire act kind of like a villain with the lines of how Harry was an embarrassment to Norman and making fun of him for crying.
@@rogue7723editors cut is directors nearly intended release cut where in the mansion before the fight peter says INSTEAD: "that was quite a performance today!" "Yeah, I am really gonna enjoy this" and Harry spoils "not as much as Mary Jane kissed me" and instead of peter being kinda emo and surprised, he's angry and po`d and goes in for the kill even before Harry finishes talking. Sam Raimi shot this as the intended version his version where the suit is a darker more unhinged persona of peter and is more prevalent in the original 170 minute cut (TBR) AND the editors cut!
This movie should have been all about the Sandman, and we need a whole NEW movie about the black suit. There needs to be alot more bad spidy, alot more spidy fighting the suit and well.. i really liked the movie, just the black suit got ruined for me.
I loved it when it came out, and I still like it more than Spider-Man 1. It's just fun, in many ways it's more like a comic than the others. But yeah, the Venom stuff was really an issue. I love Doug's idea to make Jameson's son Venom, but they at least could have had Brock turn into Venom at the end, then save it for 4.
3:16 - That's how Peter usually beats the Goblin in the comics. My favorite moment was when Spider-Man forces the Goblin to look at his son Harry, whose passed due to a drug overdose, and the shock snaps Norman out of his Goblin demeanor.
So when it comes to Spider-Man 3 I definitely like it more now than I did in the past but at the same time it is still the most frustrating film in the Raimi Trilogy and the very reason lies in that name The First two films in the Raimi Trilogy are very much Raimi’s vision and you can see it on screen but with Spider-Man 3 it’s more Raimi’s vision inter spliced with Sony injecting their own notes and ideas into the film And by virtue of that it also the start of what exposes my biggest problem with Sony’s Film Division and business practices which is just like WB they tend to be very reactionary based on how a film or franchise does financially/critically but unlike WB who seems to react more out of fear Sony seems to act out of a sense of self entitlement almost like they think they can do better than the “hack creators” To be fair as well though Sony seems to be coming to terms with that part of themselves but at the same time I think that’s why I’m a touch more forgiving of MCU Spider-Man despite the obvious issues those films have because it’s forcing the two companies to work together no matter what capacity that might be and I’d rather have them work together on the web-head than alone and individually
Hugo Segal well Spider-verse is kind of a Raimi situation where Miller and Lord had creative control so we can only hope that’ll be the case for the sequel
Doug: "You got to turn off your brain and enjoy the stupidity." Wouldn't be as fun if the Schumacher Batman films were the first versions and that many consider they are how his favourite hero is supposed to be depicted as. Opportunity gone.

Yes, Homecoming and Far From Home are more focused than Spider-Man 3 but it means ZERO if I DON'T like the story, character arc, etc which is the case when it comes to BOTH of the Holland films. @@somethingsuperbland8829 nah the holland movies sucked. They're kids films. And they have sucky action. And the story isn't THAT good. Most ppl want to see comic book characters.....idk????? Fight, do cool shit. Not just focus on the drama and comedy. Its crazy how spiderman3 has bettwr action than movies that came out 10 yrs later.
Comic book movies aren't always meant to be serious or deep or even good films in general. They're comic book movies... I'm not expecting Oscar winning writing and performances from a story centered around a teenager that got powers from a radioactive spider. As long as it's not boring, which neither of the SM movies or even the Schumacher Batmans are, I'm good.
Homecoming is overrated, but I do like Far from Home. Even though it took a year for me to bother seeing it. It's hard to say who's worse between Tom and Andrew.
@@seantds619 I personally like Andrew best. He was fun to watch as Spidey and his scenes with Emma were always great to watch. Tom is okay and I can tell he enjoys being Spidey. I just hated the direction of them making him whiny and basically being Iron Man jr. Also they took away a lot of the fun web slinging in homecoming and those are the best parts in a Spidey film.
Similar to expecting a Lloyd cameo in Brad's Cinema Snob episodes, I'm now expecting a Chaplin cameo in the First Viewing episodes with Doug and Rob...and my day is all the brighter because of it.
This movie was my Phantom Menace. As a 15-year-old, I was more excited to see this movie than I had ever been for any other movie by that point. The thought that this movie could be anything less than world changing never even crossed my mind. While watching it on opening night in a packed theater, I was blown away by what were amazing scenes to me back then (and a few of those even still hold up today), but something wasn’t quite sitting right in my mind. Even after seeing this shiny piece of mediocrity, I convinced myself for at least a year that it was actually good. Eventually, my opinion of the movie came crashing down to reality. Denial is a powerful thing. This movie is still way better than the Venom movie though.
Rami didn’t understand the appeal of venom, but he said to himself “if I’m gonna do this I’m gonna go all in” and he made the Spider-Man black suit AND the venom suit look like the comic versions (minus the bulk on topher Grace obviously) so it had the bright white eyes, the bright white wrap around giant spider emblem, the white patches on the backs of the knuckles. It looks perfect. And the Sony executives said “this looks too much like an S&M gimp suit. Just paint a spare Spider-Man suit black and call it good.” They didn’t care if it was comic accurate they just wanted that sweet sweet venom money
Well the TEST suit was never finished and was a test to see how the black suit was going to ultimately be done and thus raimis idea for the suit was meshed as a amalgamation of Peter's spidey suit and the original test suit. It ended up being the final version for sm3. The Venom suit on the other hand is 100000% the Venom from the comics plus the webbed lines to make him ferocious and more deadly and terrifying looking. Venom was used more in Sam's og 170 min cut of the film which is even darker than the darker 3rd film is and is even more evil dead tone than the theatrical and is even close to and R rated.
What I LIKED about this movie: Spider-Man getting the praise he deserves after two films of being hated on - Peter being prideful and arrogant - The Sandman subplot (minus one thing about it) - Actual moments of Monster Venom - Harry being happy (even if it is goofy and cheesy) - The action sequences - How visually great this film was What I DIDN’T like: All the ‘Emo’ Peter moments - The romance (I’m sorry but even in this I hated every moment) - The retcon of who killed Uncle Ben - The actor who played Eddie Brock - The amnesia subplot - Gwen Stacy - Mary Jane - The Stupid Dance/Musical Number - And the fact that Sony didn’t let Raimi do the film he wanted to make
feel bad for Sam Raimi he really knew how to make these Spider-Man films, if the fucking studio wouldnt have interfered in the 3rd one we could have gotten a lot more, would have loved to see him do Scorpion, Lizard, Mysterio, Vulture, Shocker, Rhino...all these iconic villains would have been great to see on the big screen done by him, its a huge shame we lost this
During that scene of Peter and MJ in the web, all I can think about is Peter saying "hey MJ, how about we lay on this stuff that was inside my body a few seconds ago?"
Peter: Now dig on this. *snapping his finger* *somewhere in the MCU* Mr Stark. I don't feel so good Emo Peter: Wasn't the spider man I was going for, but.. There can be only one.
I hope you guys talk about The Editor's Cut of this movie someday. Just WOW, what a difference moving around a few scenes, changing the music, and replacing a couple deleted scenes can make. The build up to the club scene feels a lot more earned and like Peter's out of control. There's a second BEAUTIFUL scene with the Sandman and his daughter. And probably 20 other things I could mention. I wish everyone would give thid movie a 2nd chance to check it out. It's apparently available on most Bluray copies. I even kinda like it more than 2 now, and I never thought I'd say that!
Praying Sony gets on the bill and releases the 170 minute cut and raimi and Kirsten and Rosemary Aunt May Harris and tobey Spider-Man 4 and Rob and Doug watch the Editor's Cut as comparison and understand it is a much better film than what they seem to thinkbelieve.
Fun fact, originally Raimi wanted the emo Peter dancing on the street scene to go right after Peter blowing up Harry’s face, as a throwback to the raindrops keep falling on my head scene, and as a drop of quality dark humor Raimi style) Just imagine, he blows up his face, walks towards the camera, the screen turns black as symbiote suit get’s closer and closer to the camera, a moment of silence and... TADA-TAAAA TADA-DA-DA-DA and Peter jogging on the street, as a goofball that he is))) That’s super funny, I wish they would have kept it like this
Gonna be honest, when I saw this early on in my childhood, I did have a soft spot for it. I remembered how later on I heard people talking about how bad this film was and I saw their point but in some ways... I still kinda enjoyed it😅 I know people are gonna at me for saying it but sorry, can't help but be honest.
2:57 "Here's a bright idea, why don't you make sure it's a bird, before you mutate the crap out of something just because you were too lazy to safely run this sand mutation nighttime experiment?"
Hot Take: I would actually argue the opposite, this movie does NOT regress Peter’s character but actually continues perfectly from Spider-Man 2 in a way that challenges the characters. In SM2, Peter has back-luck syndrome and everything wrong in the world seems to be happening to him. He can’t catch a break, until the end of that movie when he finally gets some of that goodness and happiness that he deserves. In the beginning of this movie, things seem to be looking up for him. For the first time, things seem to be going right for both Peter and Spider-Man alike. He’s more popular than ever, he’s getting praised and admired from everyone in NYC, and (as someone who isn’t used to that) it goes to his head. He becomes more confident, and in so becomes more egotistical, cocky, sure-of-himself, and blinds himself to the other people in his life. His newfound ego is what keeps making him vulnerable enough to be drawn back to the Venom suit, and like Dr. Conners says, it “amplifies the existing negative characteristics of its host”, taking the worst parts of Peter and making it worse. I don’t think that’s dumb at all, it’s pretty clever on paper, we just get so caught up in the campiness of Raimi’s style that the more genuine aspects get buried. (This isn’t talking about the dance club scene, that’s pretty goofy even for Raimi)
Interesting. So much like X-men 3, Spiderman 3 has a lot of individual scenes that work on their own, but as a cohesive whole, just falls apart. There's entire essays that could be written comparing these two movies
Idc what people say or have been saying since 2007. I love spiderman 3. It was my favorite spiderman movie for a while until I saw spider verse. But the raimi films always will be my most favorite spiderman movies.
My opinion on the Raima casting is that the three leads (Peter, MJ, Harry) are awful, awful choices while literally everyone else is the most perfect casting ever made ever.

@@ZzMattizZ also, spider-man 3 is still enjoyable despite facts like raimi outright hating venom and purposely putting him as little.
yet despite that when he got venom right it was enjoyable.
makes you wonder wonder good venom would have been had raimi been on a good mood
And both were on Doug's Top 11 Movies I Love But Everyone Else Hates! I think one was #2 and the other #3, I can't remember which was which!
Spider-Man 3 atleast felt like it was connected to the first two movies. The Last Stand felt so weird and out of place compared to X-Men 1 & 2.
I love how happy Doug is the whole time
Doug I've always felt the same way about the third movie. It's overbloated, a bit corny at points, but it's a fun watch nonetheless.... sorry Rob.
I was paying more attention to the cat at the beginning as opposed to Doug.
Edit: Also, I love the Beavis and Butt-Head joke.
You know, they could have just cut out that one shot of the scientists at the particle lab and it still would have made sense, suggesting the machine came on via sensory activation
Aww, Chaplin’s kitty bath in the corner!
This is why James Franco is the perfect actor to play Tommy Wiseau. 😎
10:16 - Doug turning into the goblin there for a second.
All the effects on the symbiote are so cool to me. The way it crawls and holds its shape is exactly how I've always imagined it
James Franco was basically like "Okay, the audience is hating this movie, let me at least make them laugh."
I was dying when it cut back to Doug and Rob. Just the look on Doug’s face cracked me up.
10:12
That freaken laugh. XD
😎”Now dig on this.” 🤌🏻 10:14
Fun-Fact: Sam Raime didn't want Venom in the movie.
You’ll get your first viewing when you fix this damn door!!
You forgot another one of this movie's crimes, it's the reason why the last season of That 70s show sucked.
I mean I have a soft spot for this movie and the final battle was perfectly flawless even the ending was sad but a great ending to the trilogy.
Call me crazy but this was always my favorite from the trilogy
You're CRAZY! In addition to this, you smell funky, and your nails are uneven.
Yes, I agree.
You should've watched the *hybrid version* it really improves on the flow and adds all the deleted scenes and arranges it how the director intended.
So when it comes to Spider-Man 3 I definitely like it more now than I did in the past but at the same time it is still the most frustrating film in the Raimi Trilogy and the very reason lies in that name
The First two films in the Raimi Trilogy are very much Raimi’s vision and you can see it on screen but with Spider-Man 3 it’s more Raimi’s vision inter spliced with Sony injecting their own notes and ideas into the film
And by virtue of that it also the start of what exposes my biggest problem with Sony’s Film Division and business practices which is just like WB they tend to be very reactionary based on how a film or franchise does financially/critically but unlike WB who seems to react more out of fear Sony seems to act out of a sense of self entitlement almost like they think they can do better than the “hack creators”
To be fair as well though Sony seems to be coming to terms with that part of themselves but at the same time I think that’s why I’m a touch more forgiving of MCU Spider-Man despite the obvious issues those films have because it’s forcing the two companies to work together no matter what capacity that might be and I’d rather have them work together on the web-head than alone and individually
Hugo Segal well Spider-verse is kind of a Raimi situation where Miller and Lord had creative control so we can only hope that’ll be the case for the sequel
Amesia Harry IS like Chaplin. He had the highest smile I've ever seen 😂
Doug's face at 10:17. This is what I came for.
11:55 "I have seen things in this house that is unexplainable. I have seen your father turn himself into a pickle. Funniest shit I have ever seen.
I still think there are much worse superhero movies than Spider-Man 3.
Rob shaking his head for almost a minute in the beginning... with Chaplin cleaning below through the whole intro 😆
Chaplin was like, "You're watching THIS movie? Okay, I need a bath already just thinking about it!"
Doug: "You got to turn off your brain and enjoy the stupidity."
Wouldn't be as fun if the Schumacher Batman films were the first versions and that many consider they are how his favourite hero is supposed to be depicted as. Opportunity gone.
If Holland’s Spider-Man or Garfield’s Spider-Man films came first. They would STILL suck. Knock it off.
ericdxfan511 are you trying to tell me the Holland films aren’t well made they’re at the very least more focused than this film
@@somethingsuperbland8829 That fraud above me wasn't just talking about Spider-Man 3 (I've seen him in other comment sections talking shit). Yes, Homecoming and Far From Home are more focused than Spider-Man 3 but it means ZERO if I DON'T like the story, character arc, etc which is the case when it comes to BOTH of the Holland films. I atleast appreciate some of the stuff in Spider-Man 3
@@somethingsuperbland8829 nah the holland movies sucked.
Day 2 of my new job and was just as rough as yesterday. As usual, you guys make my day. Thanks again Doug and Rob!
I honestly prefer this film over Homecoming.
me too
Same
BY FARRRRRR! I can't stand mcu spidey
6:11 one thing they could have added that would have helped develop tension is if that photo at the bottom said "photographed by peter parker"
2:28
Sony and Marvel: are you sure about that?
Similar to expecting a Lloyd cameo in Brad's Cinema Snob episodes, I'm now expecting a Chaplin cameo in the First Viewing episodes with Doug and Rob...and my day is all the brighter because of it.
WOW, no comments? My time to shine...
I got nothing... carry on
This movie was my Phantom Menace.
I still love this movie. Its a legit good movie.
What I LIKED about this movie: Spider-Man getting the praise he deserves after two films of being hated on - Peter being prideful and arrogant - The Sandman subplot (minus one thing about it) - Actual moments of Monster Venom - Harry being happy (even if it is goofy and cheesy) - The action sequences - How visually great this film was
What I DIDN’T like: All the ‘Emo’ Peter moments - The romance (I’m sorry but even in this I hated every moment) - The retcon of who killed Uncle Ben - The actor who played Eddie Brock - The amnesia subplot - Gwen Stacy - Mary Jane - The Stupid Dance/Musical Number - And the fact that Sony didn’t let Raimi do the film he wanted to make
feel bad for Sam Raimi he really knew how to make these Spider-Man films, if the fucking studio wouldnt have interfered in the 3rd one we could have gotten a lot more, would have loved to see him do Scorpion, Lizard, Mysterio, Vulture, Shocker, Rhino...all these iconic villains would have been great to see on the big screen done by him, its a huge shame we lost this
Boy I sure love not leaving my house 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Doug: "My Dougie sense is tingling. If you know what I'm talking about!"
During that scene of Peter and MJ in the web, all I can think about is Peter saying "hey MJ, how about we lay on this stuff that was inside my body a few seconds ago?"
I was legitimately watching the review for the second time and wondering when they were gonna post the first viewing 😂
10:14 - “Now dig on this….” 😂😂 I can’t help but laugh at that
Peter: Now dig on this. *snapping his finger*
*somewhere in the MCU*
Mr Stark. I don't feel so good
Emo Peter: Wasn't the spider man I was going for, but.. There can be only one.
Honestly, I always felt like this had Batman Forever vibes: there's a good movie in there somewhere.
10:16 Doug’s scary laughing face
10:16 - wow, Doug, that... THAT is a face lol
Chaplin's legs in the corner is all I can focus on.
TADA-TAAAA TADA-DA-DA-DA and Peter jogging on the street, as a goofball that he is))) That’s super funny, I wish they would have kept it like this
Just watch the Editor's Cut of Spider-Man 3.
@@ericdxfan511 thanks! And I agree dude, the original edit, it's there!
This video is when i found out that people above 14 who take the spiderman movies seriously actually exist.
Harry's death always makes me cry. The music only makes it more sad
Gonna be honest, when I saw this early on in my childhood, I did have a soft spot for it. I remembered how later on I heard people talking about how bad this film was and I saw their point but in some ways... I still kinda enjoyed it😅
I know people are gonna at me for saying it but sorry, can't help but be honest.
Art3misia the Kitsune I totally get. I enjoy this one and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 greatly as well. I kinda miss those two Spider-Mans
9:55 Is this how coronavirus was discovered?
This is the best First Viewing ever...
...actually I haven't watched it yet.
"You got any nuts"
- Emo Peter

"Here's a bright idea, why don't you make sure it's a bird, before you mutate the crap out of something just because you were too lazy to safely run this sand mutation nighttime experiment?"
hahaha 'How It Should Have Ended' series is the best xD
not as bad as the amazing spider man 2
Hot Take: I would actually argue the opposite, this movie does NOT regress Peter’s character but actually continues perfectly from Spider-Man 2 in a way that challenges the characters.
If Rob hates this movie, I can't wait to see his reaction to Amazing Spider Man 2.
Sebastian Cintron he and Doug actually like those movies
@@autobotproductions1244 then the comments section of those reviews are gonna be interesting.
@@sebastiancintron29 of that, I have no doubt
Yeah, if you thought Spider-Man 3 was bloated and unfocused...then holy shit just wait till that mess.
Interesting.
So much like X-men 3, Spiderman 3 has a lot of individual scenes that work on their own, but as a cohesive whole, just falls apart.
There's entire essays that could be written comparing these two movies
Question: Why did you guys give Chaplin a Roman column as a scratching post?
Bryce Dallas Howarda natural redhead playing a blond, where you have Kirsten dunst a natural blond playing a redhead
Then Amazing Spider-Man did it again with Emma Stone, a natural redhead playing a blond.
Idc what people say or have been saying since 2007. I love spiderman 3. It was my favorite spiderman movie for a while until I saw spider verse. But the raimi films always will be my most favorite spiderman movies.
Top 3 for me

Spider-Man 3

SPIDER-MAN 3
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

My opinion on the Raima casting is that the three leads (Peter, MJ, Harry) are awful, awful choices while literally everyone else is the most perfect casting ever made ever.
