I believe the soda came out in the 1940s and at the time, people would've recognized the name as a whiskey term from prohibition. We don't really have the term here (afaik) but I'm vaguely aware that it's the brand name of a sugary drink over there. But the lyrics of this song seem to suggest that it's slang for moonshine or something like that - is that right?
You are correct about both. During the prohibition period (when alcohol was illegal in the US) there were several slang terms for homemade corn whiskey: moonshine, white dog, mountain dew, white lightning, firewater, hooch, rotgut, and others. The term moonshine stuck as people still use that one to refer to corn whiskey today, but many of the others faded with time. Decades after the prohibition laws were repealed, a US soda company picked up the name Mountain Dew for a carbonated citrus drink. Nowadays, it's more well-known than the prohibition-era term.
