Thanks for checking it out. It's kinda funny how the term Mountain Dew became associated with a sugary drink instead of corn whiskey. I believe the soda came out in the 1940s and at the time, people would've recognized the name as a whiskey term from prohibition. Before long, the previous meaning was forgotten and now everyone (including me) just thinks of sugar and caffeine. LOL.

A song I associate with Grandpa Jones, but I heard it with other bands as well. Nice take on a classic!

I was just thinking about you yesterday. I hope the surgery went well. This is a great old bluegrass/old time song that was about prohibition but somehow still sounds relevant today. Thanks for tuning in.

@@musicalmiscellanythanks so much. I’m taking one day at a time. Been making some one handed shorts. And dealing with the pain with over the counter meds. I go back to work tomorrow with my hand all wrapped up in cast but God willing I get it off this Friday. Thanks for asking. ❤

I feel a little out of puff after watching that! Very energetic and nice to see you out in the open air. We don't really have the term here (afaik) but I'm vaguely aware that it's the brand name of a sugary drink over there. But the lyrics of this song seem to suggest that it's slang for moonshine or something like that - is that right?

You are correct about both. During the prohibition period (when alcohol was illegal in the US) there were several slang terms for homemade corn whiskey: moonshine, white dog, mountain dew, white lightning, firewater, hooch, rotgut, and others. The term moonshine stuck as people still use that one to refer to corn whiskey today, but many of the others faded with time. Decades after the prohibition laws were repealed, a US soda company picked up the name Mountain Dew for a carbonated citrus drink. Nowadays, it's more well-known than the prohibition-era term.

@@musicalmiscellany every day's a school day. I've just listened again (fun song) and picked up the lines at the start about the 'dead letter drop'! I'll bet the mountain dew tasted even better with all that skullduggery.
