If anyone heaving choking sensation because of anxiety don't worry you'll get over it. I suffered from it for 2 months. I went to several doctors and they told me that I am totally fine. Then I went to therapist still nothing happened. For this all you need to self confidence. And when you get panic attacks while eating just let it be don't react and do your usual work. Keep yourself busy set a goal and have a trust in yourself. That's how your body will understand that swallowing is not a threat. Look at human body anatomy that's how you'll realise that you'll not choke you can swallow. Thru recovery you might have experience ups and downs don't worry sometimes our body don't feel confident enough. In my journey I lost 10kg and I couldn't do anything I couldn't study or talk I was really depressed. So talk about this with your parents friends try going outside have fun go restaurants keep yourself busy and these things really help for recover.

@Austin Adler you should consult with a doctor first. they are going to tell you if anything is wrong. It might give you confidence that your completely alright. I know how anxiety works it's a mental problem but it's still very physical. But believe in yourself and doctors because they are the best to diagnose any physical conditions. At first I thought what if I have cancer or something else. But in reality it's just anxiety. So don't worry. After consulting with a doctor might give you confidence my last doctor was really kind to me. He really understood my situation and that gave confidence. I've had swallowing problems for something like seven years. Fluids go down fine, but solids have to be thoroughly chewed. Dry food in particular is difficult, even boiled potatoes.
    Choking is frightening.
The first time it happened, I was on my own - I had to act fast. Reasoning that gravity might help, I knelt down and put my head to the floor so that hopefully whatever was obstructing my airway would drop down back into my throat and mouth and away from my windpipe. After a minute or so of struggling to breathe, things eased. I've had to do this on about four occasions, and it's worked - I hoped that this might help some of you out there as well if you start to choke.

@@Mina-ok5qm Thank you for your kind comment. The choking bouts have resulted in my developing a constant awareness of what's happening when I eat and drink, it's no longer something I do automatically as in my younger years.
I'm very careful, I take my time, and this has helped a lot. If out with friends, I order small food portions so that we all finish our meals at about the same time - I don't want everyone to wait an age for me!
Adaption has for me been the key; I've learnt how to live with it.

Thanks for sharing your experience. In my recent episode I may have benefited from the "head to floor" action you described. Question: Are you sure you want to use the word *choke* here? Isn't it more like inability to swallow, not inability to breathe?

    • @gam1471
      @gam1471 Рік тому +3

@@cliodyncycwatch924 Thanks for your interest - I'm pleased that the head to floor action I described has been of help.
The word 'choke' is definitely a reference to breathing - some food must have got into my airway.
Since my previous posts here, I now have a diagnosis. A motion X-ray film was taken as I swallowed various barium-impregnated foods in succession. These were yogurt, mashed banana, and white bread. The investigation showed that I have what's called a crico-pharyngeal bar. The crico-pharyngeus muscle forms a 'ledge' in my oesophagus which prevents the normal passage of food. I'm about to see my doctor regarding possible treatment.

    • @cliodyncycwatch924
      @cliodyncycwatch924 Рік тому +1

@@gam1471 Just to clarify, I did *not* do the head-to-floor action. It's something I would have done had I had reason to believe it could provide a benefit at the time.
(In my prior comment, I wrote "I may have benefited.." but there are two interpretations of that phrase! I wish english was easier to use with precision!)
Now that I know my condition was quite different from yours (I had no breathing obstruction) it's not obvious that it would have helped me.
The action you described might still benefit other readers.
I wish you success in your pursuit of effective treatment.

Okay so update for those that where curious about my swallowing issues. So mine is from a rare disorder called achalasia it can happen at any age. Unfortunately since I noticed symptoms at 15 years old and didn't really think anything of it and now going on 30 years old. It got worse and well since food and water wasn't going all the way down it pooled and just sat in my esphogus and stretched it out. So I have achalasia complicated with megaesphogus and will require surgery to fix it. Achalasia has no cure. So seriously people if you are having difficulty swallowing just go see a doctor so they can truly see what the problem is what I thought was acid reflux ended up being a rare disorder because it can cause symptoms similar to gerd.

Hey friends, here are some things that I feel could be causing your swallowing issue.
    - Hypochlorhydria ( Low stomach acid )
    - H.pylori infection
    - Gastritis
    - Inner ear issues/Eaustachian tube
    - Post nasal drip irritating back of throat ( Check upper teeth near maxiliary sinus )
    - Deviated septum ( improper breathing )
    - IBS, Leaky gut, sibo, sifo ect causing vitamin deficiency/change in hormone function
    - Diet, sugar , gluten, dairy
    - Stagnant Lympthaic System ( Lympth massages daily )
    - Candida over growth. Candida on tongue and in throat creates a gag reflex/swallowing difficulty for some.
    - Not breathing correctly when on a device for long periods . (Shallow breathing can send the body into a fight or flight response) we're probably all guilty of this one.
    Hope this helps someone ......

I think tgat many people are feeling this because we are to focused on our own swallowing that it doesn't kick in automatically as it should, like we get very anxious and start to overthink things without realizing that the food is already going down on it's own the bam, you start to panic with food stick in ur throat. I got this issue in 2022 around November i was sick at the time and I've been using my throat a lot by coughing and clearing up my throat because of the mucus. So i got up and went to eat some food because i was hungry, i was eating it perfectly fine when i started to feel like my sweater was too tight around my neck i didn't think much of it but it really made me concentrate on swallowing after I pulled it forward to have clearance. Then suddenly i felt that my throat was very weak but food was already in my throat so I'm sitting there with my sister sitting next to me I can't react to get her attention i feel my heart drop bad and get some kind of tunnel vision just staring at the glass of juice i thankful had ready. I grab it almost immediately but in perspective it felt like a long time because to many thoughts cane through my head at the moment like family and stuff i guess u can say my life flashed before my eyes. I drink the juice no problem but now i have a lot of anxiety and i didn't know what to do or say at the time because i was just shocked. But i ate very carefully. Fast-forward to literally today in sitting watching tv more concentrated on my swallowing then it happens again i do the same thing and over it. So that's why i think that it's just anxiety and thinking about it it what's causing this to many of you. Just don't think about it's just like breathing let it happen eat peacefully watch television or talk with people simply enjoy your food and forget about the responsibility of ur throat control it'll do the work for you. Hope this helps, and stay frosty.

Yeah haha it's awful usually for me it's like my stomach decides to bring up burps as I'm trying to swallow, what helps me is drinking some water along with the food I eat. It's very annoying but seems to help me also I've noticed if I drink water before I eat it helps me too.

Water does not work, so I drank thick shakes or nutritional drinks such as Boost every day. They do down well. Also, every morning I get up early and have to lean over the sink and "purge" my esophagus to get phflegm, saliva, and mucous out. However, I am happy to say that if you search online there are a few Achalasia diet books that people have written.

Happy that I found this video because now I think I actually know what’s been wrong with me for the last 5-6 years. I feel like I have a tight cricopharyngeus muscle. Liquids go down just fine. But when I’m chewing solid food, it’s like I chew it and move it around in my mouth for a while before I feel like I can comfortably move it to the back of my throat and swallow it. This is really quite frustrating and at times depressing because it takes me anywhere from 3x-10x the amount of time to eat something as someone normal would. I dread going out to eat with people sometimes because I can barely talk because I’m SO focused on making sure I don’t choke while trying to swallow my food. From this video it seems like there aren’t really any treatments for a tight cricopharyngeal muscle other than literally doing what I’m doing, that being chewing my food up into almost a liquidy paste every time. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have any solutions? Is there a specific doctor I should see?

Got a good lunch but after one tiny swallow, my throat has stopped functioning.
The tiny lump of beef is currently still lodge in my throat and refuses to budge.
I tried using water to help it slide down, but the water gets lodged as well and throat forces gagging/vomit reflex.
The liquid comes out easily during this, but the food stays.
I can feel it move up and down as I gag/vomit the water, and some stomach contents. All liquid though.
It's also forcing my salivate a LOT. Not good when you can't swallow!

I was put on protonix but the side effects were horrible an was switch to omeprazole. Funny thing they give me pills when I'm having trouble swallowing.. I break open the pill and sprinkle into applesauce. After about a week my swallowing was alot better.. I also use tums to help as well. I’m constantly clearing mucus from my throat, and I cannot eat very hard foods like meats, sausage or anything firm. Sauces rices and soft things go down well. Haven’t took the medicine yet but I don’t feel like a antibiotic and can take this feeling away. I usually have to vomit it up but that takes about 20 to 30 minutes and I’m miserable until it either comes back up or finally goes down. Failure to swallow all the food into the stomach causes SYNCOPE!
I had total syncope with really frightening black out three times over about 9 days and each time after eating last bite/last spoonful of food.
I had had GERD for some years that I know know is CAFFEINE ALLERGY that gave mea stinging pain either side of my throat before the usual acid reflux started. The stinging started immediately after usual light breakfast of slice of bread or toast with butter and usually some jam or marmalade.
During rest of day the GERD was slight and if worse I took antacid.
Then I started getting a pain at bedtime when lying on left side and had to turn over onto right that made the pain almost disappear.
If I turned back left i almost heard and felt a heaviness sort of slopping over as though my esophagus was filled with food or drink that had not progressed down into my stomach over the 1-2 hours since last meal or drink. I wondered if the lower lower esophageal sphincter LES was not opening to allow the last meal to pass into the stomach.
This went on for several weeks at the time had first COVID lockdown made it impossible to get doctors appointment.
Then I had the first of the three syncopes and finally managed to call a doctor who immediately said it sounded as though I might have a esophageal cancer and arranged an endoscopy.
That took a month due to COVID delays.
I only had a drink of water several hours before the endoscopy and was surprised to see enting esophagus, stomach and first few inches of small intestine looked healthy and pink and the doctor said no sign of cancer or other problems.
Just after the endoscopy I noticed I had the pains in throat and reflux after a breakfast of tea and a rye crispbread. I reasoned that the rye was so innocuous that maybe the tea was the culprit though as I'd been drinking tea for at least 70 years it seemed ridiculous.
But I searched the medical literature and found that a caffeine allergy can develop and give reflux.
I immediately stopped drinking tea and bought and drank decaf coffee and almost all the gerd has disappeared except for a slight sore throat if I make the coffee a little strong.
Therefore I think this is what happens with GERD-SYNCOPE is actually a SPHINCTER PARALYSIS.
    The caffeine induces GERD.
The GERD irritates the esophagus and LES.
Eventually the GERD irritation causes the LES to fail to open so that the last meal remains in the esophagus to give that feeling of food at the back of the throat.
At some point after this LES paralysis spasm develops a meal will so fill the esophagus that it causes pressure on the adjacent windpipe sufficient enough to starve the lungs of oxygen,
The lack of oxygen then starves the brain and causes the SYNCOPE BLACKOUT!
The syncope causes a self-preservation reflex of deep swallowing and deep breathing that restores the oxygen supply to the brain.
As I now eliminate all caffeine and GERD inducing food from my diet by carefully checking ingredients of all food and drink I have little GERD and no sensation of esophagus being filled with unpassed food.

Can someone tell me what’s going on? I take small bites, and chew my food a LOT, but right before I try to swallow I realize I can’t. It’s like my body isn’t ready even though my brain is telling it to. Adrenaline shoots through my body and I have to either cough the food back to the front of my mouth or immediately sip water to swallow it without choking. What is causing this? Will it ever go away? I had covid 5 months ago.

I had an operation many years ago called Nissan fundoplication to stop my severe acid reflux.
I had many problem after the surgery, paralysed vocal cords, swallowing difficulties etc. as I’m getting older, over the past few years I’m having “breathing/choking” Problems.
First time it happened, I actually choked on toothpaste while brushing my teeth. I could not breath, my throat just closed up! I couldn’t breath through my nose or mouth. It scared the bejesus out of me. My husband went into a frantic panic because there’s nothing he can do but watch. It lasted about 2-3 minutes, but it could of been longer. It’s happened a few more times since. I can choke with the slightest thing, even swallowing my own spit. I’ve never choked while eating or drinking. I’ve not seen a doctor, I would really find it hard to explain it to them. It’s not just choking, I can’t breath… literally, it’s so frightening. I’m scared it’s going to happen when I’m on my own or out and about!

Soo , this video didnt help any, and neither did the comments. BUT, if youre like me and it feels pretty unbearable to swallow (idk how explain but super sore to the point it feels like you could cry everytime you swallow you might even hear and feel something in your throat popping) youre having an allergic reaction to something. I called my Docs office, and this heaven sent nurse explained to me All the doctor will say is benadryl and eat /drink fluids as warm as you can take them!! Its been 3 hours and I feel so much better.. some people go days without treating it apparently and it does go away on its own, but just go get some benadryl if you're not allergic so you dont have to suffer... this is very common as well, but I've never experienced this .Idk why a comment like this wasn't on this vid 😅

Scleroderma disease, especially diffuse scleroderma, can cause this type of dysphagia due to esophageal lesions or strictures (high risk). Also.....Anyone who loses their teeth from scleroderma connective tissue damage have much higher risks of this dysphagia because the loss of teeth means not enough bolus to break down foods such as rice to swallow properly to prevent the risk of dysphagia.

Hi Dear...If you heaving choking sensation because of anxiety don't worry you'll get over it. I suffered from it for 2 years. In my journey, go with your friends outside have fun go restaurants keep yourself busy and these things really help for recover.
