I used the online renewal earlier this month while it was beta testing and received my new passport 12 days after submitting the renewal online. Super easy and fast.
I just used this service. My new passport was issued 4 days after payment, USPS took 3 days. So the whole process took one week. I ordered a passport card at the same time. It was issued separately and took a extra two days. I took the photo myself with my iPhone in Portrait mode on a stand and using self-timer.
@@DonaldSmithe You're wrong on every level. There's no reason someone can't take their own photo with a camera on a tripod. If it was accepted by the FAA, then apparently it was RIGHT on every level. SMH. Nice job, @lostlakeOR
Can you provide a little info on taking your photo with an iPhone? My photos keep getting rejected saying that my head isn't in the right place. I have tried 5 different photos. How far away did the person stand to take the photo? Thank you.
I just renewed mine online and it was a breeze! It took about 3.5 weeks from the date I submitted my application and payment until my new passport arrived. The renewal online was much more convenient than in the past!
Glad to see they finally opened up online renewal for most people (barring some exceptions) I Just renewed last month. Unfortunately the online renewal wasn’t widely available yet so had to print out the forms and mail the old passport in etc. Even using the old process I received my new passport in 2 weeks, so not too bad.
Mine online renewal came only 3 days after payment cleared (which itself took 4 days). 7 days is crazy fast, but I've heard from others that their online renewal was quick too. This is a great service!
My passport is due in 9/25, and as usual, I start the renewal process at least 10 months ahead. But since I'm retiring soon, I'll start sooner, and will give a shot at the online process. About time!
Eight weeks... LOL!!!! I applied 16SEP (coincidentally and completely unintentionally EXACTLY one year to the day before expiration!). As of today I'm still waiting for my Passport Card, but I got my Passport in NINE DAYS!
I mailed mine on paper on Sept 14 with a name change. They received it probably on the 16th with mail delays (15th was a Sunday), processed it on the 23rd, and I received it back in the mail on the 27th. Sub 2 weeks, including mailing both ways, with a name change, without any expediting service. Passport service is on top of it right now.
It notes not eligible to renew if your passport is damaged, stolen, or lost. It also notes not to mail your old passport back. In that case, how do they even know if your passport is damaged or example? I can understand lost or stolen being restricted to those who can certify that your passport is still in your possession, but if your passport is still in possession and damaged, why would you not be able renew it online?
Even if it was stolen or lost it becomes invalid anyway as soon as you renew but if it is not time yet to renew you can’t do it online anyway. Again how would they even know?
My hubby and I used the beta one and surprisingly enough a government way of doing something worked so well. My hubby got his new passport within about a week and a half and I got mine in about a week later. I was shocked and super pleased with how well it all worked.
I don't need to renew mine for 3 years, but this is great news! I just renewed my TSA precheck online and that was completed in a few days. I renewed my driver's license online earlier this year and that also was quick and painless.
The good thing is that you can renew your passport anytime before the expiration date. Don't wait until the last minute to renew especially with the potential of another Trump term. Renewed mine recently and have a second passport from another friendly country that I will use should I need to escape. I'm quite serious.
They had piloted this online passport renewal feature during COVID (prob around 2022), which I took advantaged of and got my passport renewed without issue. Everything was completed online just like making a purchase.
This is such a game changer. I did mine during lock down, no hurry to get it, but had it in 6 weeks. My son's took 14 weeks. I am in MI, he is in CA. So there office was overwhelmed.
That’s not how it works. Everyone goes to the same processing center and then it is sent a the processing center depending on your info. So if you don’t have a lot for them to check it goes by very fast. Even in just a couple of days. If they have more issues verifying you it takes longer. Your passport isn’t sent to the center of whatever state you’re in.
I recently used the online process which was super easy to complete. My biggest challenge was getting the photo sized correctly but aside from that, no issues. I received my new passport, which has a slightly new look with added security features, in less than a week. The passport card which I also replaced was sent separately and I received that three days later. Great experience.
I got my passport this year and it took only 6 weeks. I sent it through the mail. It was quick and easy and my former passport had expired and a name change. Quick and easy.
I used this new system and it was so easy. It took ten minutes. I took my own passport pic with my phone. It was glitch free. God bless the USA government. It is always trying to improve the lives of it's citizens.
A US Passport can renewed online outside the USA. I renewed my wife's and my passport via online in the Philippines. I sent our expiring passports to the US consulate in Manila via bonded courier. We received our original and new passports via courier in less than two weeks.
I got so lucky and got my passport in the mail just 2 weeks after I submitted the application. I did renew at an off peak time. After summer when everybody stopped traveling
When I was renewing my passport last time, the wait times were 12 weeks. I was not able to get my passport before the trip, so I used another passport to travel, and it worked
Thanks for sharing. I did not know about this. Quick question - My existing passport expired. I still have the physical passport. In your opinion, will this online process work for me? Thanks in advance.
damn - did not know this, and I’m eligible. I just sent my snail mail application in yesterday with expedited fees - $212. I’ll be lucky to see it in 8 weeks!
Expedited is currently running 2-3 weeks right now. This does not include the time it takes for the passport to get to the State department nor does it include the time it takes to gets from the printing facility to your place.
I just renewal my passport last year in October at post office. It came in the mail less then three weeks. So, I am good. I hope the new changes is a good thing for others
Thank goodness was for the online option! I can finally take my own pic! My drivers license and passport pic look awful with the bad lighting. I can finally control the lighting with the new online option and not deal with the cranky rep at the counter.
I just renewed mine online and received my new passport in 4 days from hitting submit. I couldn’t believe how fast. I’m still waiting for my passport card as part of the renewal. I’m figuring that will take 6-8 weeks. Edit- Also the new online renewal passports may come with an alphabetical character as part of the number. Some of the airlines that let you save your passport to your frequent flyer profile may not take the alphabetical character.
Your book and card should come days apart. You might want to call and check if it was already sent because if it’s lost you only have 90 days to let them know you didn’t get it. If not you’ll have to pay again.
I had a VERY difficult time with the app accepting my photos. Had them taken 5 times at passport approved places and finally after 10 days and a dozen phone calls, I just damn mailed it!
as soon as you submit online, YOUR CURRENT PASSPORT IS INVALID for travel! I verified that in person with a passport officer. It is also online in the Q&A section. Glad i found that out before traveling.
I submitted my application in Oct 18 and had my passport in hand on the 25th. Mind blown 🤯. I wish the main photo was still in color. Black n white photos are dull. lol.
Be careful, if you are in a hurry, you cannot renew online. I just filled out the application form on-line and did it by mail expediting the mail process there and back plus paying the $60 expedite fee. It’s all a bit of a rip off but so is everything else nowadays.
Seems like what is needed is a system similar to DMV where pictures are taken and source references can be verified and processed immediately, and passports finished and issued within an hour.
The new system is nice and definitely more convenient. Thanks for putting this out so I know what to do next time. But, calling what was there before a major hassle is stretching it a bit unless you needed it expedited. When I renewed my expired one about 6 years ago, it took me around 30 minutes to do everything needed and mailed out including the driving time to get a photo at the private mailbox place where I also mailed everything. Took less than a month to get the new one along with a new Passport Card. Then again, we do live in a time where people find it a hassle to leave home to get fast food at the place 1 mile away and will pay to have it delivered, so maybe I'm just out of touch.😉 I do question the renewal cost today though. With less physical handling required in the new process, why does the passport cost so much now?
That´s incredibly complicated and expensive. In my country (Spain) you go to a police station (with or without an appointment), with a passport photo, pay the equivalent of $35 and get your passport printed right there on the spot. And, yes, it is an electronic passport with a chip and everything else.
We renewed our passports 2 times. both times only a 2-3 week wait for the new one. It never takes up to 8 weeks, and just a pointer, when the application asks if you're traveling soon or this year....say no! Why? because you will get a new one in 2-3 weeks max, that's the trend I've experienced. I live in Wisconsin.
Also, I’m looking at Monos for a carry on, they have a carry on cover to protect your luggage when you travel do you think that’s a good thing or not? I’ve never seen this before.😊
Just renewal mine and I didn't have any issues. Wrote a check, filled out the renewal form and put my picture on it and sign and date. Plus, I did have to turn in my old one along with the paperwork. Sent it priority mail and it only about 4 wks to get. Moreover, the paperwork only took me 5 mins to do.
