L’abbazia di San Galgano si trova a Chiusdino in provincia di Siena, immersa in un rigoglioso paesaggio bucolico.
L’abbazia cistercense risale al 1218 ed è tanto famosa da attirare molti visitatori da ogni parte del mondo, curiosi di vedere questo luogo dal fascino senza tempo.
Gli anni passano e a mano a mano che scorrono, subisce una lenta e profonda decadenza, tant’è che oggi la vediamo priva del suo tetto.
Questo però diventa l’aspetto che la caratterizza, poter osservare quel che rimane della sua struttura.
Una volta dentro, l’unica cosa che avrai sulla tua testa è il cielo con le sue sfumature di blu.
Il motivo per il quale l’abbazia di San Galgano è senza tetto si ricollega ad una presunta privazione della sua copertura in piombo, di conseguenza il sito dovette subire molti interventi di restauro.
Non furono comunque utili, perché nel corso del tempo la sua conservazione, divenne sempre più compromessa, finché la potenza di un fulmine, colpì il campanile che crollò sulle parti rimanenti della copertura.
Usciti dall’abbazia di San Galgano, prima di tornare al parcheggio, ci siamo incamminati verso l’eremo di Montesiepi, famoso per essere il luogo che custodisce la spada nella roccia del cavaliere Guidotti Galgano.
La tradizione ci racconta che San Galgano, come simbolo di addio alle armi, conficcò la sua spada nella roccia e si ritirò qui in preghiera, dove visse l’ultimo anno della sua vita.
La spada nella roccia conficcata dal cavaliere è tutt’oggi visibile all’interno dell’eremo ed è custodita all’interno di una cupola trasparente per preservarla al meglio.
Per raggiungerlo ti basterà uscire dall’abbazia e ti troverai un cartello che indica la direzione esatta.
La stradina è un po' scoscesa, nulla di non fattibile, ma tieni presente che è in salita ed il cammino è più comodo fatto con scarpe sportive.
Ci vorranno circa 10 minuti a piedi e sarai arrivato sulla collinetta dell’eremo di Montesiepi.
L’accesso al sito è gratuito ed è aperto tutti i giorni dalle 09:00 fino al tramonto (eccezion fatta per la messa della domenica alle ore 11:30).

Intero è di 5€ e ridotto 4€, ricordati sempre che è valido sia per l’abbazia di San Galgano sia per il museo a Chiusdino.

The abbey of San Galgano is located in Chiusdino in the province of Siena, immersed in a luxuriant bucolic landscape.
The Cistercian abbey dates back to 1218 and is so famous as to attract many visitors from all over the world, curious to see this place of timeless charm.
The years go by and as they go by, it undergoes a slow and deep decline, so much so that today we see it without its roof.
However, this becomes the aspect that characterizes it, being able to observe what remains of its structure.
Once inside, the only thing you will have on your head is the sky with its shades of blue.
The reason why the abbey of San Galgano has no roof is linked to an alleged deprivation of its lead roof, consequently the site had to undergo many restoration interventions.
However, they were not useful, because over time its conservation became increasingly compromised, until the power of lightning struck the bell tower which collapsed on the remaining parts of the roof.
Leaving the abbey of San Galgano, before returning to the parking lot, we walked towards the hermitage of Montesiepi, famous for being the place that keeps the sword in the stone of the knight Guidotti Galgano.
Tradition tells us that San Galgano, as a symbol of a farewell to arms, thrust his sword into the rock and retired here in prayer, where he lived the last year of his life.
The sword thrust into the stone by the knight is still visible inside the hermitage and is kept inside a transparent dome to preserve it at its best.
To reach it, just leave the abbey and you will find a sign indicating the exact direction.
The road is a bit steep, nothing impossible, but bear in mind that it is uphill and the walk is more comfortable in sports shoes.
It will take about 10 minutes on foot and you will have arrived on the hill of the Montesiepi hermitage.
Access to the site is free and is open every day from 09:00 until sunset (except for Sunday mass at 11:30).
