    Using OCF doesn't mean create images outside your natural light photography brand. You can create natural looking images with off camera flash that match the style and feel of your photography. See how Vanessa uses off camera flash to create a natural light feel in her wedding photography.

    Vanessa, I love your kind and composed demeanor. You are so informative and I love hearing you interact with the subject. It cracks me up how people watch a free and informative video and give themselves the right to criticize the choices you’ve made to make the video. It defines intention - will we be whiners? Or, are we here to improve our photography?

    Great video! For those who want to know more about TTL in speedlghts, you can use FEL (Flash Exposure Compensation) for just adjust the power of light to the subject. In this video, she starts talking about using the flash just like a reflector, to fill the light. You don't need to much power flashes.

    instead of everyone giving her shit for the gear she uses, just do the same with speedlights or less expensive strobes. I mean, come on, it really isn't rocket science. The only thing you won't be able to do is lock in TTL settings by switching to manual. But that shouldn't be a huge deal. It's amusing to me that people on here think that these photographers shouldn't do tutorials because they use high end gear. Yeah, okay. Good luck with that lol.

    Venessa! Are you right or left arm dominant? I’m curious to know if you’re comfortable holding the camera weight in the left hand and do you find that is more or less fatigue when on long shoots.🧏🏾‍♂️👍🏿🙏🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

    Thanks for the great video! It would have been cool if the video would have included a quick shot of the other flash (behind the couple) to give an idea of the general placement (high/low, how far back), and whether or not it had a modifier other than a CTO gel.

      You can see where the flash unit is at :37; it is between 15' to 20' behind the subject and slightly to the side.

      You can use simple speedlite and a small softbox it work like a charm. Personally i bought a 3d printer to make some part and now i have a tripod for 5$, snoot for 2$ and umbrella holder for like 1$ :) .

      Joel Caraballo. Joey just remember all light is the same, it's the quality that changes so you can get on eBay and buy modifiers for cheap with extra diffusion or less diffusion and get same results

    • @remoras
      @remoras 7 років тому +5

      Joel Caraballo you can use any light. Light is light. If you use a speedlite in the back and one in a softbox in front you can get the same result. You will have to work manually though. A yongnuo flash which is super cheap will allow you to do the exact same. Only difference is that you do not have ttl and not as much power. But in this example more power is not needed.

      Joel Caraballo I use the Godox ad360 and ad200 and get results similar to this. Much cheaper than Profoto.

      99% of the people watching these videos don't have the money to buy the shit they're trying to sell. They put links to the gear in the video description. Instead of making videos pushing expensive gear that their audience can't afford, maybe they should, at the very least, put links to comparable gear that their audience CAN afford.

      That being said, light is light. Period.
      You could do this with a speedlight.
      Their audience was capable of using UA-cam to find this video; I would like to think they are also capable of using Google, or the Adorama website to find something comparable.

    No offence (and to answer to peoples replies) : I think a 1DX is more suited for sports and stuff, and a 5d3 or 5d4 would be better for weddings.

    • @davidcarex161
      @davidcarex161 7 років тому

      Yep.

    • @llg4958
      @llg4958 7 років тому

      Again, I'm curious why you feel this way, since you haven't made your point.
      With weddings, you don't want to miss moments. The frame rate of the 1DX is double that of either camera.
      It has a higher ISO capability than either 5D model you mentioned.
      CompactFlash is still a bit faster and more reliable than SD, and the 1DX has 2 CF slots.
      The additional megapixels are not needed by the majority of wedding clients.
      You might have a system that weighs less by going with a 5D system, but just barely if you decided to incorporate battery grips, and it might be more economic if you have less money to invest.
      That being said, all three of these cameras are suited for weddings.
      How I would choose which system to purchase out of these three would be based on what I would use the system for outside of the wedding arena.

    What about a similar video on the same subject for travel photographers on a budget? E.G.: using speedlights off brand stuff (Adorama brand) shooting by yourself. Always good when budget is unlimited, but there is not much of a challenge, especially with an assistant...

    • @llg4958
      @llg4958 7 років тому +2

      Light is light my friend. It is just a matter of power between strobes and speedlites; because of this you may have to position your lights closer or use more lights for the same effect. Check out David Hobby (Strobist) or Joe McNally(also on the Adorama channel.)

    TL:DW, Use a keylight (beauty fish in this instance), and a backlight with a CTO gel on it. Use TTL to get a decent exposure then switch to manual to fine tune.

    video is confusing.. the idea only works on high end strobes. if your using speedlights they dont show the power levels for ttl,it also took a fair few test shots to get the lighting result you wanted so why not just start in manual or use exposure compensation in ttl mode..example on my speedlight i know if i use iso 100 and f2.8 the flash will be 1/16th power if i put it one metre away for correct exposure. i could get your result in less test shots just by working out the power levels in my head before taking the first test shot.is another case of too much expensive gear and not enough knowledge..yes i had to learn because i cant afford pro gear :{ but i can get same result with entry level camera and speedlights np.sorry for ranting i had a frustrating conversation in the local camera store when the sales person tried to convince a customer he needed 5dmk4 and 24-70 to get good results,its just not true or needed.

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 6 років тому

      You can't blame the store. They're trying to sell you their most expensive shit......as is their job. As far as you being able to get your exposure in less time with less test shots, that's great. But why give her shit about it? And no, everything in the video works with speedlights as well, the only exception being the capability of locking in TTL power settings by switching to Manual mode on the strobe.

    I don't see why she change her aperture defeats the whole purpose of HSS. once you've got the exposer you should be messing with the light power. Shes losing her DOF

  • @wanneske1969
    @wanneske1969 7 років тому +5

    I don't see why you use a 1 Dx for portraits, a 5D4 is much better. And at iso 50 you have worse image quality than at iso 100

    • @XTJ7
      @XTJ7 7 років тому

      That really depends on the camera and is not true for many newer models. What is true, is that you lose dynamic range. But you do get cleaner images on most recent cameras, because it is essentially overexposing the image and then dialing the exposure down in post. That makes it a cleaner image. I don't know if it is true for the 1DX2, but in case of the Olympus E-M1 Mark II, for example, it works exactly like that. Sacrifice one stop DR in the highlights but gain even more noise-free images. Aside of that I completely agree, the 1DX is absolutely overkill and a higher resolution model like the 5D4 or 5DS R would be better suited for portraits.

    • @TomasRamoska
      @TomasRamoska 7 років тому +4

      johan bauwens how much worse? 😀 do you think clients will notice the difference? She can shoot at iso640 and for customer image will look just the same. Only photographers will see the diference with 100% zoom :)

    • @TinoSchulz1990
      @TinoSchulz1990 7 років тому +5

      You don´t seem to have a clue..
      ISO50 is not worse than ISO100. (!)
      And yes. 5D4 MIGHT be better than the 1DX. But, what if this video was produced before the 5D4 came out? Or if she doesn´t have a 5D4?

    • @kristoforsauer5521
      @kristoforsauer5521 7 років тому +3

      High Speed Sync is your friend...I'm guessing she was trying to keep her shutter speeds at or below 1/250 which you don't need HSS for.

    • @FairlyUnknown
      @FairlyUnknown 7 років тому +2

      Never understood that, either. Not like she's in the deep desert or rain forest shooting swinging monkeys from tree to tree (that applies to other non-action portrait photographers using the 1 Dx Mk1/MkII as well).
      As for using the artificial 50 ISO, it can actually produce less noise in certain situations, you just need to know when to use it and how to expose
