I relate but I gotta share: As a newer wife I also was being chided by a whole room full of people/in laws/family etc to make my husband a plate of food as I entered the room and as I stood there stunned and confused...my AMAZING SWEETHEART HUSBAND came over and LOUDLY said to me: "Go sit down baby, I will get you a plate. He grabbed 2 plates, loaded them up and came over to sit with me." Dead silence as all his brothers, the women, etc seemed to rethink their whole lives. I have never appreciated a man so much! I certainly didn't expect or demand to be waited on but it was SOOOOO kind for him to intervene and protect me from the public shaming by being such an incredible example of a TRULY GOOD HEARTED MAN! I wish the world was FULL of real men like him. My BEST BEST FRIEND!!!

My husband and I attended a dinner given by a Mennonite friend. We were the only non Mennonites in attendance. The room got very quiet when my husband got up to clear the table. The hostess was quite flustered. 😂

ONLY when the other persons mentality is that of ENTITLEMENT does there become a problem OR WHEN INFLUENCE FROM OTHERS PLANT SEEDS POISONING EITHER PARTY CAUSING THEM TO BEGIN HOLDING A GRUDGE OR MAKING THEM SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT SHOWING THEIR PARTNER HOW THEY FEEL FOR THEM, PUSHING THEM INTO TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE OTHER...AKA PEER PRESSURE why? Out of jealousy and NEEDLESSLY create drama for their own entertainment.
Don't worry about what other people thing as long as you know what's going on in your relationship with your significant other. As long as BOTH PARTIES ARE PUTTING THE OTHER A HEAD OF THEMSELVES THEN THEY WILL BOTH BE TAKEN CARE OF IN EVERY WAY. People now a days do NOT seem to COMPREHEND this fact. They are all about THEMSELVES...WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO FOR ME 1ST? THEY DO NOTHING BECAUSE IT IS RIGHT. THEY DO IT WITH CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS.
ANY time you do anything with expectations you will ALWAYS be disappointed. No one can read your mind, no one can be expected to meet your fantasized requirements, No one. Hold yourselves accountable for your actions, your thoughts, your goals and how they are met and HOW THEY AFFECT OTHERS. Every last thing you do AFFECTS others in ways you may not realize. THINK 1ST THEN ACT.
I firmly believe that the "pluck your eye out" verse in the Bible went something like this.
"Hey Jesus. Looking at these women is making me lust. Make them do something about it."
"Have you tried looking away?"
"Too difficult."
"Well you could pluck your eyes out. Can't look at them lustfully if you don't have eyes."

Old Testament God is an angry, vengeful, jealous God and he doesn’t play. He and Jesus are so different that it makes me believe that Jesus is the son of a different God. My theory is that there was more than one Jesus and according to history, I’m not wrong. Check out the book, “The Many Sons of God”. One was the Kohen Gadol, High Priest of Israel, and the other was the Anti-Christ.
I believe that the Anti-Christ and Jesus will return together. One will deceive the nations and the other will be shunned by so-called believers. The true savior will preach a path more difficult than the one preached in the past. The anti-Christ will preach a gospel of peace and prosperity. War is coming.
If you want to know what God has in store for you, look into the day of your birth and see what happened on that day. Then look at Bible verses with the month and day of your birth. Also switch it to day and then month. It’s just a little fun for those that are curious.

Growing up in Scientology explains it in on of his videos as the show is different in different elements such as forced abortions, no actual beliefs in CoS and no real gender roles as a body is just a vessel for body thetans. There's no auditing or emeters. There won't be many similarities to compare and the two are different from each other enough that EM won't actually have a reason to see them alike and she doesn't see CoS as a cult.
As a man, It's best to NOT clip your wife's wings. Treat her with respect and as a true equal. Let her free. She will come back to you on her own because SHE WANTS TO, not because she is forced to or is a brainwashed husk. All these men who think they have to force women to be with them do not know how to treat a woman and will NEVER know what they are missing out on and what it's like to be with someone who wants to be with you.

@Charisma Hornum-Fries not a bad idea. It's ok to be masculine without the toxicity. And before I get roasted for not "not being a man" I am a diesel mechanic in remote alaska and fish amidst grizzly bears. I live in a place where there is no police, no fire department or ambulances. But that doesn't really matter, you can still treat women like queens, and they will likely treat you as a king. It's mutually beneficial.

One of the most intersting ttivival bits about the Handmaids Tale is that Elizabeth Moss is a Scientologist. When I first began watching this, when it came out, I was struck by how I could see this story line coming to reality. It freaked me out so bad! I watched maybe three years but evntually got to a place I could not watch it anymore. I won't finish it either. I'm done. Thanks for bringing this to light for the masses to understand.

When you were mentioning how the women in the order are expected to have kids right away, I wonder if part of that as well is that it probably makes it less likely for the women to try and leave. It’s harder to leave when you have extra people that you need to bring with you

I read Handmaids Tale when I was 12. Not great reading for a 12 year old but it scared the shit out of me..like to the point I couldn't sleep and I had panic attacks. My dad would just hold me and tell me it was fiction and it wouldn't happen and if it did...he would do everything possible to protect me.

We did IVF for me having infertility issues. I always lead with that because ppl would assume it's something on my wife's side.
Male infertility is so much easier to diagnose that it should be the 1st check.

I just got out of an abusive emotionally and verbally relationship I was engaged 3 months, after which he started telling me I shouldn’t wear makeup, I don’t need to dress up or look nice then the piece de resistance was I had a photo of a guy dressed in red holding my dog it’s on my iPad he went ballistic yelling who is this man? It’s Santa clause holding my fur pup for $10 rescue donation! I ran, no contact very narcissistic angry misogynistic little boy! 😅🙄🙏🏻♥️. Society needs to re educate people about boundaries, respect, trustworthiness, and abusive bad behaviors. Boundaries including, emotional, sexual and physical. That’s just the tip of iceberg. Also girls, women are taught from an early age to be people pleasers and caretakers we need education to break this brainwashing conditioning.

The last chapter of the Handmaids Tale book is set in the future and they talk about the basis of Theocracies and Dictatorships throughout time, framing Giliad in those. It really interesting because Margaret Atwood clearly looked at the commonality of cults. And effectively how humans don’t re-invent the wheel they just manipulate it for their own purposes. Recommend reading this bit.

@@aspenenglish4976they have the same founder. In fact, the FLDS are more Orthodox and MUCH closer to Joseph Smith's original organization than the LDS Church. Many of the early prophets preached that "celestial marriage", aka polygamy, was the only way to exaltation. This the FLDS are more righteous and correct according to Mormon beliefs than the current mainstream LDS Church. Both are gross 🤢

I just finished The Handmaids Tale and the men have to prove they are worthy to the Commanders of the home by their works. When those men are proven as worthy, the Commanders choose a wife to be assigned to each man and then a special group wedding is performed in front of the Giliad Community and it is always very young teenage girls that have been brought up to strictly be a wife and to be betrothed to a worthy man by the age of 15.
I also imagine that since the events that occurred in the Handmaid’s Tale to make the drastic change in government appear to be somewhat recent, and they even show that different districts have their own levels of severity, that it’s still in an experimental phase. So the different “lead” commanders may have different ways of deciding how new commanders get wives, or maybe only allow already married men to rise the ranks instead of awarding them wives. We also see that Martha’s have non-commander husbands.

@@MaryLoveJane You're talking about the series, right? I think those married Marthas are really the so-called econowives, ie. wives of men who are fairly low on the social ladder and therefore cannot afford to keep either handmaids or Marthas. Econowives are basically expected to do it all and that's why in the book their costumes are striped, with stripes the colour of the wives', Marthas' and handmaids' uniforms. In the TV series they wear grey, so easy to confuse with the greish green of the Marthas 🙂 At least that's what I remember from the book (and I'm now rewatching the series) 🙂

I feel like they kind of brushed over that part in the show, so it wasn’t very clear how the distinction between Martha’s and econowives.
I know econowives and their husbands were kept in submission under the threat that any mistakes either of them or their child made would condemn the wife to becoming a handmaid, the child to be given to a commander, and the husband would likely be killed.
I *think* Martha’s could no longer have children, so their only threat was being sent to the radiation fields.

The concept described here at 15:27 sounds scarily similar to my experience being autistic in this world. We are taught to suppress our true selves/our true thoughts and feelings until we end up so far disconnected from ourselves. Finding out we are autistic then becomes an intense journey of reconnection.

That sounds awful. My experience was actually kind of the opposite, where I was accommodated well at home, but when I moved out was when I was driven to figure out why I had such a hard time in my friendships.

I was in a very abusive marriage when I was younger. It was so scary and crazy after I got out of it because I was able to make choices for myself and I didn’t have that option before. I found myself asking the people around me what I should or shouldn’t do. But after years of therapy and hard work, I am finally starting to be independent and gaining confidence that I never had before.

The Handmaid's Tale (the series is based on the book) was first published 1985, and Atwood said that everything in the book have happened somewhere at some point in history.

When you talked about getting out and being overwhelmed by freedom/options.. I could totally relate.. I know it’s not the same but I was in the military (not a good experience for me) for 8 years and an abusive marriage for part of that time.. I got out of both just a few years apart and had that same feeling… going from being so controlled, micromanaged, beaten down, & mentally scarred by it all. Luckily it’s been years (almost a decade) and I’m finally starting to feel “normal” again!

I've been resistant to watching the handmaid's tail because I watched the original movie in the eighties. I was young and I didn't like how angry and confused it made me. Now I might watch, I'm seeing so many parallels between the show and some religions in how the control is manufactured like tinker toys. Thanks for what you do.

I grew up in a cult. I couldn't watch or read it before I got older and had been out for years. Don't worry. Taking your time with difficult things is just fine.

I grew up Catholic and a lot of things in the handmaid's tale and your stories remind me of the crazy things the Catholics told us when we were little kids. It was less intrusive but the similarities disturb me so much.

I was in a sister cult to the one you were in. I escaped in my mid 20s. I was sex trafficked my my biological father and patriarchy from the time I was In diapers. Women are used as 'breeding mares' in the mainstream LDS church and my firstborn son was forcibly removed from me and sold for $4000 (because he was brown, and therefore the adoptive couple got a 'discount' and a tax writeoff, in spite of the fact that i come from a very desirable and 'pure' bloodline) after I was drugged and cornered in an empty room with a 1 way mirror by 3 men in suits. And lets discuss his baby shower, while my pregnant ass was sat in a rocking chair in the corner while the adoptive mom to be got doted on by all her besties and i was invisible. The only time they even acknowledged me was to speak in an incredibly pius hushed voice thanking me for my selfless act. How does one sum up such a horrid series of repetitive brainwashing, terrorism, isolation and dehumanization? You cant. The stories we could tell!!! Girl...I'm talking too!!! Yes I can corroborate what you said about women needing a man yo get into heaven. 100% true.

I had to comment on the lady falling and people walking past her. I grew up in a religious community and there were the nice people and the not nice people who’d blame you for your struggles. I’ve dealt with health issues my whole life, and in high school I got in a car accident and suffered a severe concussion. At these youth events I’d get very exhausted and sometimes I’d fall over or faint. People would just walk past me and complain that I’m dramatic (they knew about the car accident and my health issues) but again, it’s that mindset of “it’s their fault and she’s being annoying to us and getting in the way.” Some people were kind, but they were few. I learn to blame myself and hate myself for my poor health. I’m still learning how to come out of that mindset. But being on the receiving end of that kind of treatment is truly devastating. My heart goes out to anyone in similar situations.

I highly respect yourself and the other brave young women from the show for helping so many people to get out from the cult, spreading awareness and even though it must be hard to go over your painful story but you would be surprised by the countless others you have helped including myself. I had close to a perfect childhood and my parents were the most amazing, loving and dedicated family people to the point that as an adult I considered them my good friends and when it became too dangerous medically for me to live alone I moved back in with them. Unfortunately Mum passed from cancer on Boxing Day 2020 and Dad 13 months and one day after on January 27th (it was a hard Christmas this year). Despite this I was abused in all ways possible by my ex fiance. I always thought that I was bad and he told me I needed to be punished, he isolated me from everyone but not my parents once they found me with bruises they kept me safe. This was 22 years ago when I was 22 and I've not even gone on a date ever since and still can't be alone with a man or a group of men even through I've met some lovely men but I'm too scared. Do you know the definition of patriarchy? Clearly, you don't. As far as Handmaids tale is where society is heading, it's not. Are there bad people in the world, yes, but people as a whole wouldn't let this happen on a large scale. If it's happening in cults, then we should focus on helping women who need it. In politics classes in school a circle would be drawn with extreme left and extreme right at the bottom. We were told there wasn't much difference between them except there are different people in power. This was during the Cold War and when Chile and Argentina had fascist regimes. We used to refer to Eastern Europe. Cuba, China, and North Korea as the second world as opposed to the third world of undeveloped or partially developed countries.

As a person from another (not particularly religious) country, who has never been in any sort of religion myself, but am very interested in these high control cults/religious groups. I saw so many bits of the handmaids tail and could relate them back to things I have actually heard different women from different religious groups (that have escaped) also say. So I honestly could see a very similar scenario happening in real life. I have never heard anyone from these types of religions acknowledge it before you though Amanda. * Guardians - assigned for security of elite households and as drivers for Commanders, they're also assigned to Salvagings and handling enemies of the state (i.e. hanging them from streetlamps, the Wall)
* Angels - soldiers on the frontlines of the ongoing civil war between Gilead and rebels
* Eyes - usually Guardians who secretly serve as informants to higher authority, they snitch on the Commanders for abusing their position
* Commanders - the elite men of GIlead, the men allowed to be issued Handmaids as both breeding and sex slaves; it's pretty much known that they abuse their positions constantly because they have "affairs" with their Handmaids and go to brothels
* Economen/Econohusbands - the work force for Gilead businesses, they were people who willfully joined Gilead and didn't have any previous "ungodly" sins (being divorced, committing adultery, being LGBTQ); married to Econowives
Commanders move up the totem pole by their Handmaids (or Wives, some Wives are fertile) having successful pregnancies and births. Guardians can be "rewarded" with (usually underage) assigned wives and if Commanders like the Guardians enough, they can be promoted to Commanders.
I know way too much about this universe. 😅😅😅 Information is mainly from the show and the show and books have different continuities, so keep that in mind.

@@tinkercat8268 The Brethren group that I was in was a small church that I had been exposed to since a child when my dad took me for visits when I would visit him in PA. They were a group that followed the reformed doctrine, in other words Calvinists. But even as a small group they were fundamentalist extremists. I later came to this group as a single mother, and they embraced me, and became my family, after my family rejected me. Unfortunately, they were not the completely christ-like people that I thought they were, and after almost 10 years and almost too late I found out I was in a cult. I was able to get out, and my children, but with a lot of emotional damage.

In the Handmaid's Tale, they have some kind of governing council of men. They decide who is worthy of what. So men have to do something to be noticed by the council to move up. That becomes more clear in the latter seasons.

I'm really blown the hell away at your strength, intelligence, free thinking.. without an example growing up, you manage to THRIVE, knowing yourself. It would.have been the logical step for you to be raised thinking you were just a breeder, but they were unable to clip your wings by making your life so closed off.. you're kicking ass and taking names, an inspiration.
I find it endlessly amazing that Elizabeth Moss is in the Handmade's Tail and cannot see the parallels between it and the sScientology cult she is in

I have been a follower of all things related to this topic and I watched your show when it was on and I so wish it was still on and getting the word out there. You girls that have been able to get out of this cult and create a new life and I hope you are so proud of all you have accomplished ..... You are all such strong and brave woman and I would love to help if there is ever anyone in my area which isnt likely but I would open my home in a heartbeat to protect and help .... Keep the information coming you are doing amazing things for those who are still struggling.

I read the handmaid tale by accident in the 5th grade. I'm a bookworm by nature and found myself in a feminist lit section.
It scared the hell out if me. I didn't watch this show until last year, because of how real I thought it was and could be.
Listening to you, Amanda I am struck with how much this is like DV situations. Speaking from experience... my father was religious but we were nit part of a cult. However I always hear my therapist in my head on how I was raised in a rather culty way...

Wow! What an amazing strong woman you are, Amanda! I was ignorant about many things in cults until I saw your channel. I remember getting horrible feelings years ago just imagining what living a life like the handmaids would be like. Can’t imagine all you have survived!

The author of the handmaid's tale has explained that she took inspiration from theocracies. So I wouldn't be surprised if she also researched theocratic cults.

I didn't grow up I'm a religion as strict.
It was still strict enough. I remember feeling like I was walking on egg shells.
I was very quiet & shy. I was afraid to to talk.
The clergy people, always seemed to never be happy. You never know what you can do or do to get in trouble.
You where told how to dress, how to stand, how to sit, how to walk etc
When you are in a room you couldn't leave until you are told. In single file, but it was timed 3 mins apart. If you where at the end of the list you would waiting for ever.
You where not allowed to go to the bathroom, unless told.
So now. I have a reaction if someone try to control my actions.
I must have exit at all times, must have a bathroom at all times etc. Or I will panic.
In therapy & working on it.
I like channels like this one.
Because watching this type of content, is what made me realize, I needed therapy.
There definitely needs a part two or even three. Thanks for working so hard on this and sharing your insights. I came out of a high control group of churches that was founded by a former RLDS (Community of Christ) youth pastor...who had been atrested for sodomy of a 15 year old boy (he got a plea deal/slap on the wrist). While he never practiced or preached polygamy, the attitudes about women are almost exactly the same. They have no say or position in the church apart from their husband. All majorl ife decisions must be approved by church leadership. Where you live, who you marry, where you send your children to school or college, and what you do with your money 💰is all closely monitored by the church leadership. If you don't comply, you will be pushed out and cut off. The worst thing about that is that they expect you to give up EVERYTHING to the church...including your family 👪 that's not in the "Network". When you get pushed out of the church you lose all your friends, and you have no one for support because you abandoned your family to be in the Network. After someone leaves, the congregation is told that the person was never a Christian in the first place they are demon posessed., and /or following their own evil desires. I love the Handmaid's Tale...but is hella triggering.

Extremely enlightening and amazing reflection! Women throughout history and now how been suppressed and minimized in our society. Our value as a woman is only worthy in the self esteem we give each other as strong women with healthy minds. Historically, and throughout the history of man, we had no power. Look recently at Roe vs. Wade, this is what we are worth to society. We can’t even control our own bodies, and I am pro-choice and would choose life for MYSELF, but wouldn’t make a woman choose my belief. We are a society that in many ways are going forward with some areas of woman’s rights yet, if the Politicians and political Christian Right continues to gain strength, we will lose everything we have tried to overcome and, not just for women but, racial injustice, the criminal injustice system within race, and the LGBTQ prejudices. It is so sad to hear your story, but yet I am so happy to see your strength. How is it that a rapist can get the same time in prison than someone who commits Property Crime, Burglary or Auto theft blows my mind!

In my opinion because of your bravery, if I never watched this video, I never would've believed you lived under this horrible abuse because you're the embodiment of strength and bravery and kindness( male or female ). Your voice is valuable and all women who are forced to live this way need your videos and your voice so they'll know that it is possible for them to get out of these cults and have a life with purpose and that's purposely yours, not someone else's to toy with. 🤗

I love this video I’ve never watched the handmaid’s tale, but you made it very understandable, and still had your own personal stories, which I truly loved. I would absolutely love to see you get more in depth in the seasons.
