I've Got Worms! Earthworms in the Lawn! Worm Castings! Quarantine Protein?

- Let's talk about worms! Everybody's got worms, let's not be ashamed!!! I'm digging around in the soil today and seeing what I can find. Lot's of activity happening this early, the ground is waking up! So vermiculture is a thing that a lot of people are passionate about, I'm not really, but I do love their function and purpose.

The small white worms (babies) are either pot worms or new earthworms. For those of you unfamiliar, White Worms (aka Pot Worms - family Enchytraeidae) are close relatives of the earthworms. Both of these worms are members of the class (might actually be subclass now) Oligochaeta - i.e. they are segmented worms with “few bristles”, unlike the 'Polychaete' worms.
Worm castings are a natural process of having these creatures working in the soil, and some have made the attempt to make them available for the mainstream turf market, I think this is a fine effort but only if you do not have worms to begin with. It's alway more valuable to let nature work by nurturing the soil to encourage soi life.
As you can see, the lawn is coming in very well and it's happening early and fast. Material applied so far this year, 9 ounces per K of Humic12 and closer to 12 or 15 ounces of Air8 while I was testing the new Miracle Gro sprayer.
Double checked soil temps... in the top 1", 53 degrees at 4-6" 44 degrees.

New fun idea: earthworm challenge. Dig a 6"x6" spot in your yard and count the earthworms. maybe weight them out
Yes
Then go fishing with the worn bait?
I did a science project in elementary school on worms. They are awesome things
I’ll send you my dirt and you can count my worms👍🏼
@@workinprogress5936 me too! "can an eath worm learn to turn left or right" and I made a T maze with wires that would shock them on one side and not the other. I got first place! Result: they could not learn.
That's what I'm gonna call it...... I've got worms
A few years ago I started covering lawn beds with cardboard and then putting the mulch on top. I started seeing a whole lot of worms. Especially after a good rain
Oh I’m sure. Composting method
Came for the knowledge. Stayed for the cat. (Refrained from making the obvious joke 😬)
All I need to do is count the worm casts in my lawn, there is one every inch and sometimes 3 or 4 of them right on top of each other. Doesn't look like worms like your lawn very much and that's a good thing!
I've been following you, Aalyn, Pete and Matt for a few years now. Switched over from a lawn service years ago to N-ext products (just got a fresh shipment today) and can't thank you guys enough for the amount of knowledge and advice you provide. My lawn is absolutely beautiful. From all of us DIY'ers, i can't thank you enough for what you guys do. Greetings from Long Branch NJ. Thanks John. 👍
Thank you so much!!!!!
I love your videos John and not only do I love your videos but I love your products! Quick question. If you dont have a grub issue, is a grub preventative application necessary?
Definitely no need to do that unless present
Perfect, thanks!
John I put out a dose of A8 & H12 at the end of March like I did last season and once again my lawn jumped out of the ground everywhere even around my tree, it looks great thanks again for all the info and giving all us DIYers HOPE at a greener life 😇👍🏽
Just thinking out loud John , I know you created the very best product that brings our out door homes to life , but have you ever thought of controlling weeds as safe as you do for our land Scapes . This would really blow everybody’s minds and take things to the NEXT LEVEL . I like to have a nice looking lawn but not at the cost of hurting humans , animals and even worms . Just a thought & only 20% of the royalty’s ha, ha , & if anybody can pull this off is you dr. Frankenstein
I appreciate this Michael, I do have some ideas I'd like to take to fruition... it will take time and lots of research
Great video. Thanks for sharing. 😎
Thanks for watching!
First time I have a ton of worm castings/mounds. But my lawn looks a bit brown still. I've never put fertilizer or anything or anything on my lawn. Any suggestions?
That tool cut int your soil like butter. Air8!!!
That’s funny I see a lot videos about grass , lawn equipment & products to apply . Not enough on earthworms & the role they play . Good stuff man
Bep Boplives thank you. It’s very important
Last year I used almost every chemical products under the sun to control weeds that came with purchase of my house & felt sick to my stomach when I saw no birds on the lawn to enjoy its beauty . So last winter an old Hippie told me to encourage birds & the life would return to eat what the birds drop . I then got 250lbs of bird seed & two giant bottles of peanut butter . Now the Robins are fighting for control of my yard , I do have weeds & have not used the synthetic fert that I bought for the new grass in the front yard . I don’t know if I should use the starter fert that I bought , so what your thoughts on synthetic fert & the rates that won’t hurt the life in the soil ?
Any Recommendations for corrective measures for low K? My soil Report recommends Muriate of Potash but I hear that has a very high Salt index. I'm trying to get the K up without to much salts
Sulfate of Potash 0-0-50. Better option
so if i am seeing a lot of worm castings throughout my yard, you recomend i do more liquid Air8 to help my soil loosen up? i have used it once already at 2oz per 1k about 3 weeks ago. do you suggest i hit it again soon?
Typically Air8 is applied at 6-9 ounces. So I would hit it again
I have clay soil like yours. I pile Air8 on it and it's very bumpy from freeze frost cycle and earthworms. Is my only way to get a flat lawn to aerate and top with sand?
I have a Vermicomposter. Can’t wait to whip up a batch of tea in a few months. Thanks JP!
I had been having a horrible summer with ground moles, I had spent gobs of monies trying to rid them of the great job they are doing in destroying my pride front lawn. My last resort was, I noticed none of my neighbors hardly ever watered or cut their lawns so I turned off my sprinkler system. I think this is the best thing that I have done so far, I’ve been watching for mole activity for the last week, and I think I might have advanced in the battle with my mole infestation.
It is currently 52 degrees here in chicago April 8. We had a rainy day today. My lawn is looking great! Completely green already. Went outside and my lawn is jam packed full of worms. At least two worms per square foot. I am honestly disgusted. They are big worms too. But I guess worms are good right?
I scooped up a pile cat poop or possibly dog poop from my lawn yesterday. Underneath the poop there were 3 worms underneath it.
Hunky MrB that could be a pet problem...
@@Lawncology It IS a pet problem! I don't have a cat, or a dog!
Hunky MrB 😂😂😂
Great Vid series JP! Questions any issues with mixing Air 8 - Humic 12 and Prodiamine 65WDG in one tank spray. I know Air 8 is high in PH so was not sure if that had any effect on Prodiamine. I need to get this down ASAP. Thanks as always for all the knowledge you share. Chad Upstate NY
split those. put out your air8 first and then do the Pre
@@Lawncology Thanks JP, I know I read somewhere that high PH solutions can lower the Pre-M efficacy. Appreciate it my friend! Chad
My youngest refers to these as "moving noodles". Everyone should.
I love that!!! 😍
Lawn n coffee 🙌👍👌
I have clay soil but mine is very dense and hard to dig through. Impacted maybe?
Bighaus yes. Compacted
@@Lawncology Air-8 and RGS then I guess
Awesome as always
Thanks again!
What is the best lawn supplement to put out that will attract worms?
Worms love organic matter. encourage rooting. humic is a big help
I wonder how many will research the salt content of their fert and be willing to make a change to support soil biology.
it will interesting to see for sure
John, thank you for this video. I definitely have worms.... in my yard, and I'll have significant damage from grubs and other root eating creatures, if I don't put down something to get rid of them. Sooo, that's going to happen... sorry worms. My lawn is looking incredible since using the N-ext products. Here in Cary NC we have the worst clay soil I've ever seen, but after using the N-ext products of the past several years, I've notice the yard seems to have risen an 1" to maybe 2". I've really see it at the curbs and around the driveway... something big is going on there!
That’s awesome!!!
JP, you speak about this stuff like I speak to students about music. That whole part about digging up soil, feeling it, smelling it, and playing with it is no different from everyday music jargon; except we can't touch the sound so it's a little more conceptual. Still, the goal is the same. Everything and anything can be seen artistically. So you are an artist, amigo.
Good stuff.
Jay Gonzalez love that Jay
Fun stuff!
Thanks for being here J!
Ray is so adorable! 😻
He's a great lawn side kick... He's been eliminating voles
Lawncology He’s catching them? Wow! My cat goes after birds, mostly fledglings on the ground, but she does not hurt them. She brings them inside to me to take care of. Another time she brought me a lizard. It’s a party all the time with her.
Minou TV he’s doing an incredible job. Hoping he keeps the Potguts (ground squirrels) away toi

John, is the intro your music?? It would make a great ring tone..
No, that’s something out of iMovie. One of their free jingles
The white worms you found are not baby earthworms, they are likely pot worms. Don't feel too bad about accidentally killing those! 🙂
☀️ Good morning!! ☀️
Good Morning!
John, why did your elbow give a puff of smoke @12:29?
I’m on fire Brian!!! No, steam from my breath, it’s still cold
Worm dump😂
LOL
Top right of shed is the lawn guy
Haha... no

At least JP remembered to turn the key on.

John. In the pre-chat you mentioned a dog food that prevents urine from yellowing the grass. Although you couldn't recall the name, there is a product called GrassSaver that claims to do this naturvet.com/product/grasssaver-soft-chews/ I've seen it used and seems to help, but your dog's mileage may vary. ~ mike
Sweet. Thank you for posting that!
