I love that final line that Ursula says, "you can't help who you fall in love with. It is about who pulls at your heart strings". This is such a great way of wording what you guys are accomplishing at the rescue. I doesn't matter what color, gender, state of health, temperament, look, etc. that a guinea pig has, it is about helping each one that comes through your doors and discovering their unique personalities. The way you view your piggies helps your adopters see them in that way too. I love your rescue, keep up the good work! - McKenna

It’s good to hear Ursula’s boar group is going well. I have 17 boars living together, it took a long time & a lot of patience & quite a few false starts but we got their in the end. They are a really calm & very tame group. They are all rescues & unrelated & a range of ages.

19ft by 6ft enclosure, with access to a large run during the day. So probably more space than the humans have!
3 months of the year they are indoors in a 70 sq feet c&c with a 12sq ft 2nd floor.

Carol & Daryl, on my channel there’s lots of videos. The outdoor cage tour is before the shed extension though. My indoor cage tour video is before the upstairs was added. The “snow” video shows what the indoor cage looks like now.
As soon as it warms up & the pigs can go outside I’ll do a new cage tour video.

That's amazing! How many boars do you think are necessary to keep the group stable and friendly? I know that groups of three or four usually don't work, so I'm curious at what point they were able to start getting along?

I know this isn't really about the video topic but I have always been shy and kind of scared of being to rough with my two girls but seeing Saskia in all her videos being confident with the guinea pigs inspires me to be confident with my pigs. We have two girls. And they are a pretty good example of how different guinea pig personalities can really be. Our smaller girl is a bundle of joyful energy. She popcorns and talks constantly. So many peeps and whistles and wheels. She also scared easily. She's affectionate and purrs when u pet her. She tries all foods. She's just a sweety. Our other girl is a big grumpy potato. She rumbles and grumps around. If she doesn't want to be pet she will kick you like a horse. She is also our calm stoic piggy. Doesn't spook or run. They make a good team though. Good influences on each other. 🧡

I have always had boy piggies. The ones I have now are just the sweetest. Licks, cuddles up and lays down with you. Never wants to go back in the cage, just stay with me. The boar cleaning isn’t an issue. Takes a few minutes and it’s done. Never allow it to discourage you from having a boy. It takes less time than making a cup of coffee if done regularly. Thank you Saskia and everyone at the rescue. Love that your hearts area so big for these gorgeous loving animals x

Always go with your gut! We stopped and went into pets at home for a break after we picked up our new car, and I saw a beautiful little piggy in the adoption center, he was so cheeky!! I knew he was coming home with me, we hadn't planned on it but I knew I could fit him in. He spent the first night in my room while I fixed up another cage in my shed. Honestly, boys are much more social! I have 1 neutered boar, and he's a doll! My girls are more independent, and like to be with each other more, whereas my boar will lie down in the cage and let me pet him, not always wanting to go into a house or snuggle sack, they're more confident and relaxed, in my opinion. There's always exceptions to the rule, but I've heard the same thing from others. Especially now, a good exotic vet will neuter a healthy boar with minimal risk, and that's that! After that, there's less to clean, and I don't find my boy, when I'm holding him, to have any smell. Very true also that girls get ovarian cysts, and also can be temperamental and territorial, and fight! I find my 2 abby's to be kind of temperamental, which that breed can be, and headstrong, lol! Those piggies you're demonstrating on are so firm and chunky, I love it!

I just rehomed a male guinea pig, his friend sadly passed away I’m assuming from bumblefoot or something like that because the one I did adopt was not in good shape/health when I got him, I’m in the process of finding him a new friend to bond with but one rescue tells me he would be better paired with a baby male but then another said he would do better paired with a female or two (providing he gets neutered but I think due to his age most vets will not neuter him) I’m just getting opposite answers from people so I thought asking someone with more experience like yourself or this rescue could offer your opinion on what’s best to pair him with? I just really don’t want him to be lonely

I know this is an older video but I am so glad you mentioned about following your gut when it comes to choosing a gp. I was intending to have girl gp's (because I read online they were easier), until that is I saw an ad for rehoming a boy. Well, when I met him, he was for me. He is now a chilled out huge dude who loves being on my lap having our special time together. I was in my pet store buying some goodies for him when I saw a wee black and tan fella begging to come home with me. Thanks to you Saskia, and Scotty, I bonded them successfully. I love my boys so much now. So all of you out there, don't decide that you want males or females, just as Saskia said, "follow your gut". Love and wheeks from the UK. xx

Thanks, Saskia and Ursula. I just love how Xena is falling asleep in your arms! I have had both males and females over the course of 25 years. Some were introverts and some were extroverts. I had a female that I adopted who could not get along with the two other females in her original family and would not bond with a neutered boy. They had to live side-by-side. In hindsight, she clearly had something going on with ovaries and just wanted to fight. But she was the calmest pig with us. She was always coming to the side of the cage and calling to be picked up. I neutered my male cuy. He is always hiding - breed behavior, but will come to the side to be picked up by my son. No pouch cleaning which is one more reason to do it. I originally thought I would bond him with another pig, but he is much happier on his own and is almost 7.

Males do have a higher chance of a break up if they are bonded as babies though, right? We get a recurring type of comment on our channel where someone has male pigs that were bonded as babies and now they hit puberty and are fighting. Should matchmaking be done after puberty for them?

Hi! At the rescue we like to bond babies with adults that have been difficult to bond with other adults. We often don't keep male babies brothers together. They are adopted out separately with others. It is very difficult to gauge babies personalities and who knows if both might be dominant in the future. After puberty is not necessarily better but it's all about the pig temperament honestly. If a young baby has been living with a more assertive male then that baby will most likely not challenge the older one as they get older. It is like an unspoken agreement they create early on. Even if the baby challenges with a little humping here and there during puberty it will usually not go far. Now if you try to introduce a male while he's just starting or in full puberty then that bond will likely not go very far. This I speak with experience from all the male bonds we do at the rescue on a weekly basis. I love bonding boys! It is one of my favorite things to do at the rescue. That's probably because I have boys of my own though 😊

I put them in separate cages side by side for a few weeks and let them get to know each other. Observation told me when I could put them together for play dates which eventually turned into living together. They have bonded and don't like being separated. Happiness all around.

In our guinea pig community in Slovakia, they are extremely for spaying and neutering our piggies, mostly as a prevention for when they get older. As much as I understand the pros of the spaying/neutering, it still worries me because it's still a surgery and guinea pigs are such tiny animals. I'd rather avoid the possible post surgery prolems if anything. Everytime I mention to them that I have a non-neutered boy (another 4 week old boy friend is coming in a week!), they always criticize me for not getting him a harem of girls. I'd love to do that but 1, I don't have the space and 2, I jus't can't stand the thought that he'd have to go through surgery. Let's pray he'll like his new baby boy company and they'll bond well!

    At 11:43 yessss!
I have had 3 other guinea pigs before... who have all passed of old age. (2 girls, 1 boy)
When I was looking for 2 others, because I know they have to have a buddie.
I wanted 2 girls, since in my experience the girls were a lot nicer. But I ended up to my local humane society because we had seen a post on Facebook.
They looked really healthy, and we're in different cages since their owners before had gotten them from the pet store. We were told they had 2 other males and that these 2 were fighting lots.
So they got rid of them.
like I said I waned 2 Girls... but i went with my heart, and got them.
They may have turned a year, or maybe not. I am not sure but they are no older then a year that is for sure.
I am so glad I got them... their names are; Oreo and Cookie!
Oreo is a bit more shy, but learning to come out of his shell!!
Cookie on the other hand is out going and will tell you what he wants😂
But in the end I am very glad I got them, and I now see how sweet boys can be!!!!!😁😁
Saver the bond you have with your piggies...!!

It's funny cause my most "aggressive " pig is my sow Orca and my one male Chouchou is a full fledged Buddah pig 🥰 he's a lover not a fighter xD as much as he rumbles from time to time

I've had two girls in my life, mother and daughter, they lived besides a couple of males. Every other pig was a boy. So I have absolutely no idea how a pair of girls would be without males nearby xD usually end up with the pigs I love, instead of pigs I want, if I can say it like that. Xena and Sushi, you're such darlings, I love you

The only time a guinea pig has been 'aggressive' towards me was when I was, very stupidly brushing their stomach, a few years later and I still have the scar.

one of my girls is 8 years old and has round sides and really “crusty nipples”. i suspect ovarian cysts. she is so old, i’m not really sure what to do. is she too old to have something done to fix it? she is the sweetest piggy i have ever met and just loves attention. i just want her to be happy.

    MALE PIG EXPERIENCES:
In my experience of having boys, I’ve had four (three currently as one passed). Two boys got along very well and were fully bonded until one passed - this was when the grieving pig (Cookie) turned extremely violent towards other males. We bonded him with a younger pig as suggested and it was fine until he attacked the little one who now unfortunately has an amputated toe/finger due to this. All three pigs left are now on their own but get endless attention which makes me feel at least a bit better. They immediately go to attack each other when we try to bond them so I know this is best for them.
HOWEVER, all four boys that I had/have love humans endlessly and often give kisses and can’t wait for attention. The pig that passed (Chip) was the cuddliest pet I have ever had and he just melts in my hands much like another of my boys does. The little one who is still fairly young will climb up me to lick or kiss my face and even Cookie who is violent to other pigs will very happily receive cuddles and loves his ear rubs 😅 I hope this has helped anyone wondering about boys

If someone from LA Guinea Pig Rescue, or anyone who has experience with this, could help me out with this question, that would be much appreciated! I was wondering if it would be ok to bond two previously bonded male guinea pigs with another two previously bonded male guinea pigs. All of these male guinea pigs are either 4 or 5 years old, and they are incredibly calm and happy go lucky guys. Do you think bonding would be ok? Thanks so much, and I love what you are doing at LA Guinea Pig Rescue.

My friend has girl pigs and they pee at each other (it goes pretty high behind them) and it gets on the walls. My boy pigs don't do that. Is that a girl/boy pig thing? I prefer my boy bigs because I don't get pee outside the cage like my friend.

  • @Sunshiinee0

I’ve only ever seen biting with my baby piggies which can be intimidating if you assume that behavior will continue because honestly it won’t, you have to think babies just got pulled from mama and sent off to somewhere they don’t know. It’s very nerve racking the first couple days. My advice to New Guinea pig owners would be give it a couple weeks, give them treats, a routine and eventually they will become your little buddy. I personally feel Guinea pigs don’t stink (boys or girls) it’s just like a dog pooping in the backyard, if you don’t pick up the poop it’s gonna stink 🤷🏽‍♀️ it’s poop… I clean my cages every week and a half and have no problems with smells what so ever.
