- Sky Trek Tower is a 330 foot Intamin Gyro Tower that opened at Six Flags Great America in 1977. The ride closed during the pandemic and hasn't operated in about four years. The park is getting ready to reopen it to the public, and they invited me out to be one of the first riders ... but they surprised me by inviting me to take the climb from the ride vehicle to the top of the tower! I share what that experience was like and some of the photos and videos I was able to take.

Ah wow, what a lovely video! I'm so glad you were able to experience going to the top. Back in high school I did summer maintenance for the park and while I wasn't able to get to the top of Sky Trek, I did end up going up Giant Drop, which is pretty similar in design(though we only had ladders inside the tower, no stairs!) Thank you and your photographer for taking such wonderful footage! Especially the internal components of the ride system, it's always great to see this kind of stuff out there for people to see. Hope this season goes as good as ever!
I remember when they would put King Kong on the top with the flag pole during fright fest. I wonder what happened to that ballon

Awesome video. As a kid, I remember going to Great America when it opened. As a teenager we had saved up for season passes. Sky Trek was awesome in the day and at night. I’d love to see how they do maintenance on the other rides. (ie. American Eagle).🙂
I wonder if Giant Drop also has an interior motor room and staircase and I wonder what it looks like? I could be wrong, but I believe Giant Drop is also built by Intamin so it would be interesting to see. They do look quite similar from the outside.

it's funny b/c they are exact opposite types lol. they're like brothers, except one is good and one is evil hahaha
New Thing on my Bucket List for sure
This is one of my all time favorite rides!! We would go one this ride the very first thing when we got to the park! One year we got there and I had to use the bathroom, but there were 6 screaming kids that couldn’t wait. So my sister and I took the kids on the ride. No big deal it’s like 7-10 minutes, until it got stuck at the top for over 15 minutes!!! Made it to the bathroom, but not my favorite ride that day!

My only complaint about Sky Trek is it's cabin.

Guys if you don't know the sky trek tower is closed this season two
it depends on the day. sometimes it's only open from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p. other times I've seen it run all day
One thing that stunk was they just played the goofy old Great america theme over and over again...We didn't get a narration of the park unforutnately
i was lucky to get on it. one thing though, make sure you don't put your feet up like i did haha. the ride op had to ask me to put my feet down lol. rules are rules
