I rented a very small storage unit when I moved from my home to a rental condo. This storage unit houses ALL of my holiday decor, the boxes for my computer, stereo, blender, etc. and empty moving bins. It costs $90 per month. My rental condo does not have storage, nor the closet space to keep these items on site. I will be in transition for approximately 24 months. I did the math before renting it and figure that I could not replace the sentimental holiday items or the moving bins for less than the cost. I know exactly what is in the storage unit (and each container is labelled). I feel bad about the extra expense but would feel worse if I could not have some 'spirit of Christmas past' wherever I end up.
Polly Dolly you thought it out and have a plan and know what you have.... that is not what most people use units for, they use it to not deal with stuff
Great vide Lorie. It's also a good idea to buy mouse traps, roach/ant/etc "hotels" and place them all around in a storage unit. Plus placing all your stuff on pallets if you can. Then check your unit at a bare minimum of every month to check for damage, bugs, theft, etc.
All you said in this video is so true!!! We had to use storage during a house move & renovation- we ended up using storage for 3 years. Most items got damaged, mildew & mice on them. In the end a lot of stuff had to be got rid of, but what one doesn't realise is you end buying duplicates of kitchen items etc while everything in storage. I can truly advise from personal experience that using storage containers should be a last solution and only temporary.
I've just talked my friend into taking the stuff out of his storage unt that he's been paying on for 6 years (!!) and he kept only a few pieces of furniture and we are selling the rest in a tag sale, then donating what does not sell. It is amazing how much money he wasted. He could have bought all of that stuff twice over. He was paying $70 a month...mathwise, it's baffling. We hang onto things and things don't matter. People in tornadoes and fires understand this. What is valuable in life is not things. Thanks for your video. xox
Exactly. I’ve always believed that if you have a house and you have a storage unit, you have waayyy too much stuff. It’s time to get rid of some things. 😊
You just opened my eyes WIDE open !! So happy I found your video ,this makes perfect sense . Was going to store a few odd outdoor things and my fairly new fridge till I got a chance = Lazy lol to sell them next spring . Moving to a new apartment that has snow removal and appliances . To store these items will cost about what I would try to sell them for :( Wow I better look for another way to sell these things quick !!! Way I figure it you saved me a bundle even if I can't make money on them Thank You :)
Lorrie, You, your mind and your wise words are just super stunning in this video! Thank you! On a related note, you briefly mentioned emotional attachment to stuff earlier in a separate video. Opening boxes of old stuff can unleash an overwhelming flood of memories. Depending on one's situation, this may cause anxiety, despair and mild panic attacks. In short, the stuff can become a stimulus to trigger unpleasant emotional responses. Immediate reflex of the mind could be to move away from pain's source (Just like our hand pulls back when we, unknowingly, touch something painfully hot in the kitchen). That is not all! Unconsciously, the mind would do all it can to steer away from the path of pain (One is careful next time around hot objects!). These things could manifest as procrastination! If its worth, please consider making video(s) about this aspect.
We were moving long distance & used the storage unit to "stage" what was going on the moving truck. We knew we could not exceed that amount of space or our moving budget would sky-rocket. We had the unit for 3 months and then left it nice and clean (which the Managers appreciated and refunded our full deposit).
Soon I will be moving into an RV and living in it full time. I will be saving a fortune in rent. I have gotten rid of most of my things already, but for the seasonal type things I am keeping, I will be getting a storage unit. I'm going to use shelves and drawers to set it up like a walk in closet. :)
@@hb6497 Oh crap, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe I'll rent garage space from a family member instead. I've decided not to get an rv until I retire anyway. Too much hassle while I'm working full time. I can't work from home, and we can't park rv's on the street where I live.
@@cynthiahowe I think that’s a better idea, plus it would be better to have that $100 a month for the storage unit go to a family member instead of the storage company.
@@cynthiahowe from what I’ve read, a lot of people with bedbugs put their stuff in storage for a year to kill the bedbugs ... I have no Idea what goes through their heads... the bed bugs can easily get into someone else’s stuff that way
Very helpful thanks we’re moving from a 4000 square feet house back to a 1741 square feet house we lived in before it’s currently rented out but we’re moving into it soon we are moving to a temporary place first then to the home we used to live in thanks for these details I’ll decide witch works best 👍⭐️
There is other ways you can get buy a small used or new container or long enclosed trailer or cube van in the front of the house on the driveway for extra space resell later get the money back I talk to a guy who sells the contents of storage units and containers when people go belly up and stop paying and he says 90% of the stuff he takes to the dump most times as people are filling the units and container up with stuff from Walmart worth .10 cents a piece.
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for actually! Someone to talk sense in the actual cost of what this storage is costing me. I've had a large 10x20 unit for about 10 years and I don't even know what's in half of these boxes. Been trying to declutter this past week by getting rid of all these items I don't even use because they're in back of the storage unit and it's hard to get it. I even have u cashed checks 😭😭😭.
When my wife and I walk around the neighborhood, I'm surprised how many people have garages at least half-full of stuff. They leave their cars out in all kinds of weather so they can store junk. I have inherited the contents of three houses. This stuff was mostly worthless junk, so over 90-percent of it was disposed of....as garbage or donations to various charities. The value of these goods did not justify storage for any time whatsoever.
5/3/18.....I know a homeless woman---her hubby had stroke & died within a year + son was druggie & put illegal mtg on the family home---& they now live in a car during the week & @ hotel/motel over the weekend. Almost 20 yrs of whole house full of items STUFFED into rental units....Over $200./mon......So sad + NO organization + items ruined by pests/weather/improper storage. Best bet---lightening even tho NO insurance.....
We have one, 7 kids, 1 has moved & finally taken the last of his things (they were boxed while he was single & in the military active duty), my next oldest is on a 2 year mission, we gave him Rubbermaid Tubs for the clothes he would wear when he returned home & any other items so they can be in storage away from the siblings so they can't mess with his stuff. The next two just graduated high school & are moving at the end of the summer/start of fall so once they are gone storage should be moving to the house in the mainly unused bedroom closets. We may also be building something for under our stairs which have to be replaced anyway. This would be for the holiday decorations, etc. because we have not built a garage yet & the basement is living space (no attic space that can be used or accessed easily). At least it's only $30 a month. Looking forward to not having to drive to the storage unit every time a holiday season comes up & pick up clothes for my daughter as she is changing sizes quickly & isn't far behind her sister in sizes (4 girls so a lot of pass down).
Great advice. We watch that Hoarders programme here in NZ and were shocked that some people were paying for 2 storage units for a long period of time, along with a house full of stuff and a garage you can't put a car in. Simplifying your life by getting rid of that stuff the way to go :) - good advice.
I always envy the space of american homes in Ireland my house is very tiny in comparison you have to get very clever with storage here and BTW that blouse is stunning on you navy seems to really be your colour!
So useful, I just rented a storage unit, and I’m seeing how much I can get rid of or sell. I have some high priced items. But yes a lot of it is laziness.
Every time somebody dies, they ship all the deceased's stuff to our house, and every Christmas we get tons of gifts. My wife thinks everything has sentimental value and either will not or cannot declutter. Whether it is will not or cannot is irrelevant as the result is the same. I don't want to get a storage locker because I think it's a waste of money but I'm sick of living in what is basically a dump. There isn't enough space to store everything she wants to keep. I can't even afford to buy storage bins to sort through it all (storage bins are so expensive!) We have tons of other people's clothes, records, books, dishes, toys, ect. because it is her "family memories." If you can believe it, I used to be a minimalist. I could put everything I own (except furniture) in my coupe and drive away. Now it is the complete opposite. It is SO FRUSTRATING to live in constant chaos.
Storage is usually month-to-month and people are free to come and go as they please, it's not like you're in prison.... If people want to rent, who cares
My storage unit was just hit by fast intense mold. It was on everything. Moved into two more units at a different location. Good for swapping cars out.
Also they get burglarized a lot ours got burglarized at Public Storage the police said they're out there four to five times a week just at that facility they say like you should know better they said they would never put anything in a storage facility.
some people dont have those "big american houses". double wides are VERY space inefficient. its a nightmare. we cant possibly store our huge box of winter gear, the christmas stuff (like the tree), and some other misc things. thankful, so far, for my parents garage. and bonus: in many many years, no pests up in there at all - only flies. and not IN our stuff, thankfully. that garage system looks great for the perfect garage. ours gets mice and snakes and critters and i lost one whole box of things to the destruction of mildew and bugs. BUT, all that being said, i WILL NOT have a storage unit. im not paying for something like that. we're on a tight budget, and i guess we would use boxes for chairs before we bought a storage unit.
Lorie, there are at least 4 categories of items that parents possess that adult children will have to deal with; truly valuable family heirlooms....probably the exception by a long shot. Second, things the parents think are valuable but are of modest value at most; Third, things that parents thing are of value, and are probably not of any or much value, except maybe sentimental or too good to discard, so it has to be properly sorted out and donated; fourth are items that you just don't know if they are valueable, e.g. things you see on Aniques Road Show; the parents don't know what to do with this stuff, and it was acquired before the internet when 'stuff' was needed more and less available than today. Some of this is because the parents may have wanted to spend time golfing or enjoying retirement and dealing with it is difficult and very time consuming, or parents may have developed health conditions. And all sorts of emotional impediments of possessions are a problem. As you point out, storing it is expensive also; one approach is to keep ten percent of it, or some percent of it. However finding a home for the rest of will take some work, because the items are generally too nice to be just discarded. However, you might need a storage unit for that ten percent. Parents lived in a time when things cost more money than they do today, and people had less money, so their perception of the value of the items is framed differently . As a general rule, I am a pro-storage unit person, if you can afford it for reasons I cited yesterday.
People spend more than their things are worth BUT most people can't afford to replace what they have at one time. A once a month fee a lot of people can afford as long as you get say a 5 by 10 and don't go to expensive.
I always find your videos interesting-even the ones that don't relate to me personally. This one does (I'm trying to make my husband understand how important it is to get rid of our storage unit). But I also want to point out that your sound in this video was odd-a bit muffled, something I've noticed on other videos. I mention it only because you seem to value feedback, and in this video, the sound could have been better. That's actually my only criticism-your videos are great otherwise: Interesting, encouraging, and on point. I'd just like the sound to match. :-)
AmeriNZ I noticed that too, after we posted the video. Yes, I do appreciate feedback. We'll run some tests to get this taken care of. Thanks for watching!
I have 10k worth of embroidery threads. No room at home. Have inventory on google sheets so i can see thread colors needed for projects. I hate going to storage a few times a week. Any ideas? They have to be climate controlled. Had a large embroidery shop, sold building. Now working from home with 4 machines instead of 19. Cost does offset rental not having to buy thread and pay shipping. But, it's getting tiresome. In fact, moving to a larger unit today because it is difficult to get to certain colors. All are in boxes in numeric order for ease. Is this foolish for biz? Should i dump threads and start from scratch?
You have a lot of issues there Lorie; to begin with, one needs to separate climate controlled vs non-climate controlled storage when referring to attics and garages. Many valuable items have been ruined because of that approach. Second, clutter in a home can be a source of enormous decrease in quality of life, energy, and productivity. I realize storage units are an expensive solution and having less items is part of the solution. Third, I agree it is puzzling that people store items that should be given away or dealt with (garage sale is mentioned), that can be due to spouses not agreeing on what needs to be kept, or items from parents that cannot be dealt with until after the death of the parents because of family dynamics. Fourth, important papers have to be kept; ....an acquaintance of mine retired from legal practice and it took him, his wife, about 18 months to scan all the documents (semi-full time, in fact also a niece helped) so that did save him having to pay for a storage unit, but I wonder if the 18 months was worth it. I have a storage unit, and I put off the decision for years and I am happy I have the money for this luxury. I think going through the unit and discarding items or giving them away, etc, is a good practice and perhaps downsizing the size of the unit you need is in order. A well organized storage unit can be a very nice quality of life enhancer, and by the way, nice Christmas decorations do not belong in an attic or garage. They belong in a nice climate controlled storage unit, or some other climate controlled environment. I would also say that some hoarding is prudent and healthy, for people who live geographical situations (e.g. hurricane paths), and even during COVID 19, having items in large quantities to prepare for these unpredictable situations is not such a bad idea. I have enjoyed having my storage unit, I like visiting it, and enjoy the interactions with the people who work there. I agree storage units expensive, though I live in a part of the country that does not have basements or attics, condo living is typical, and keep in mind that these sorts of homes have less space to begin with. People do need less items today, especially with so much available on the internet, ----I see people have bookshelves that have sort of a messy appearance to them when in the past, books were a source of information and entertainment. In my community it has become difficult to even give books away, library has a sign not to leave book donations etc. That is a whole other subject.
You would need to hire an experienced auctioneer he might charge 200 or 300 bucks to go to the unit and look depending on how much stuff he to sort at would save you 100s if not thousands of dollars.
Thats not true.. I charge 35 and two months free.. That is like 350 for the first year. So that is not the only reason.. Um little hype. At no time did we ever get a complaint and we have insurance on that- if there was damage. Never happened
Im going to buy 10 stotage units each costing $200 monthly. So $2000 monthly. Instead of contracting, ill be expanding! Stop trying to save your money. It will get you nowhere. We both know its better to live rich.
I don't find this helpful at all and I only came across this video because of auto play. Storage is supposed to be temporary. Also you should never have so much junk that you have to put it into storage. Stop impulse shopping you can only have so much stuff.
China the problem Walmart the stuff is worth 90% or more less after 30 days it’s all landfill I bet another statistic 50 % of the stuff in storage units made in China worthless.
Well said, makes sense.... The way I see storage unit rental however is through a different life lense. If a person happens to rent an apartment for even a few years. The average rent is over a $1000.00 per month. People spend 100's of dollars per month on gasoline, just to drive places. Average cell phone bill is just over $100.00 per month and people have their cell phone for many years. My point is, I write off storage rental fees as the same as just another basic life fee as a part of living. It's not pleasant, but it allows me to keep my belongings and it's simply a bill. I don't think about what my stuff is worth VS the fee of the storage unit. It's just like paying any other bill in life. On the flip side, I rarely go out to eat at restaurants , or go on vacations. It's just not for me.. So I'm saving 100's of dollars by not doing those things.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to say it. I am a European, boy say here they are increasingly talking like the US. It is so ridiculous. Stop consuming so much. As an average person, US also has so many debts. stop storgae unit sales and give away and pay off your debts.
You make so much sense. I moved into a small senior assisted apartment with very little storage space . I have so many things I would like my kids or grandkids to have but you are right they don’t want most of these things. So I think I will donate some things .

Clutterdiet - What is the source of the data you provided? Im thinking of building a storage facility on my property.
Shes talking about me! More than enuf!. If i hit that lotto the 1st thing i wud like2 admire is my shark & 2nd my big kid sized speed racer car
4:00 lmfao
statistics show that most people cannot afford to own a house, let alone a big one. Yes, having a house solves storage issues.
Where would you find someone to hire to help you sort through your storage unit?
Amen.
how do we hire someone to go thru stuff???
You would need to hire an experienced auctioneer he might charge 200 or 300 bucks to go to the unit and look depending on how much stuff he to sort at would save you 100s if not thousands of dollars.
Thank you for this video.
Also, you are a gorgeous woman.
Moving and storage is even worse
Thats not true.. I charge 35 and two months free.. That is like 350 for the first year. So that is not the only reason.. Um little hype. At no time did we ever get a complaint and we have insurance on that- if there was damage. Never happened
we need help!
JCFgirl The first place I would check is www.NAPO.net, there is a place you can search for professional organizers in your area. Good luck with it!!
thanks mitnickdarkshade you guys saved me
Dang Lorie, youre stunning!
Hi, j.c.f. girl. So u need help sorting out, your right( STUFF)
okay ..pretty Lady.
Im going to buy 10 stotage units each costing $200 monthly. So $2000 monthly. Instead of contracting, ill be expanding! Stop trying to save your money. It will get you nowhere. We both know its better to live rich.
I will b right back
wtf is wrong with you
You are very pretty.
I don't find this helpful at all and I only came across this video because of auto play. Storage is supposed to be temporary. Also you should never have so much junk that you have to put it into storage. Stop impulse shopping you can only have so much stuff.
China the problem Walmart the stuff is worth 90% or more less after 30 days it’s all landfill I bet another statistic 50 % of the stuff in storage units made in China worthless.
yet you're plugging giving stuff for free to a company who will make money on the stuff given away..pffft
Americans need space. Period!
I just found out mine the owner stole everything with no notice to me..
You have given great advice I feel the same way about the cost the stuff will not be worth getting storage for two years plus.
How about lawn care businesses use storage unit as their garage?
It is a good decision?
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to say it. I am a European, boy say here they are increasingly talking like the US. It is so ridiculous. Stop consuming so much. As an average person, US also has so many debts. stop storgae unit sales and give away and pay off your debts.
You make so much sense. I moved into a small senior assisted apartment with very little storage space . I have so many things I would like my kids or grandkids to have but you are right they don’t want most of these things. So I think I will donate some things .
