Eric's story is much like mine. I first heard SRV as one of three red hot blues songs on a local rock radio station (remember those marvelous things?) that featured a previously unheard by me artist (Stevie) followed by Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. I had to wait until the triple song set played out to find out who the mystery man was. Upon finding out it was SRV, I became an immediate fan and was fortunate enough to have seen him live four times before the horrible tragedy that robbed him of his life and us of his talent. He was a sight to see and hear every single time and is surely missed.
True! But there is an account of Eric having Jimi onstage where he started playing a song with ease that Eric felt was too technically difficult, Eric was seen backstage, shaking as he lit a cigarette. He said, "He can't really be that good, can he?" Much different to his initial reaction to Stevie. This does not diminish Stevie's talent in any way shape or form, I'm just saying I think he meant Jimi in that part
Just to clarify, you think he meant Jimi was the greatest when he said that? If so, that wouldn’t make sense because he told Stevie in person, with multiple witnesses.

@@messi5601 like I said it’s just opinions, cream was a monster blues machine as far as improv. and no way In hell could Stevie play jazz like Larry Carlton, Steve lukather, jay graydon, or any of the session cats. I think Peter frampton could outclass Stevie on a jazz tune. Very underrated melodic player know for a gimmick of a talk box. @@allthingsclassicrock i never said he was a full jazz player.... you literally comparing full time jazz players with a blues player.... stevie played some jazz: stangs swang, chitlin con carne are both jazz songs, he then used jazz influences in lenny and riviera paradise. I didn't discover Stevie Ray Vaughan until after his death when his version of Little Wing came on the radio as I was falling asleep one night. I sat right up in bed waiting for the end in the hopes that the DJ would tell me who this was. When he did my reaction was disbelief. I remember thinking, "Who the hell is Stevie Ray Vaughn and why do I love his music?" Of course what I was remembering was Hendrix from 20 years earlier. But that experience was the first time I learned how great a song can become when it finds the perfect artist for it. I heard that kind of thing when Gato Barbieri found Carlos Santana's Europa with his saxophone style. Or when Whitney Houston found Dolly Parton's I'll Always Love You. In each case, it's a match made in heaven.
I remember exactly where I was when I heard that my favorite guitar player died. I just got home from work and heard it on the news. We just moved into our new dream home and I just went out to the back padio and cried for about an hour. A terrible day for so many people.
Why have you left out the date, I have seen him twice and , I couldn't sit down... my wife was very embarrassed. She no longer in the scheme of things. She gave me two wonderful and beautiful sons,, beautiful of their age, I got one back. SAD!!
Reading this after all these years still makes me cry. I can't even listen or my day will be shot. I'll be a puddle. He was going to become so much more but he was already a GIANT! & as a lot of women I also feel his voice was perfect for his sound.
I am glad I got to see SRV in 1984 and 1985. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the news of the helicopter crash came on the radio.
As Eric is a good fellow, he is always well spoken about many pals---he says "the best" of Duane, Albert Lee, Robert Cray, George, Prince, Jimi.., Mark.. "I think Robert cray has more talent in any nail than my in all my body.... Only the bad ones critizise badly.

I pulled over in my 1979 Firebird Formula the first time I heard him too. It is hard to describe how different he was from most music on the airwaves in the early 80s. I saw him on July 1, 1987 in Mansfield, MA. He was otherworldly good that night.
Wow thank you! This literally moved me to tears without any new information being related to me as I have been an avid fan of SRV for decades and have watched and read most all that's available for public consumption concerning Stevie...including reading hundreds and hundreds of comments left by others like me who leave their thoughts in the comment section of UA-cam videos of or about Stevie Ray Vaughan. His story is 2nd most bittersweet I have ever known about in my 54+ years being in the world. I truly and honestly miss and love Stevie, notwithstanding the fact I never met the man. May he rest in peace forever.
First heard Stevie as a teenager learning guitar. He was the big inspiration as far as guitarists go back in the day. I'm so happy to see young guitarists learning his style on you tube and killing it. To this day I miss him not being here.
I too, did that thing where you hear a song on the car radio and had to run into the house and call the radio station to find out who it was ... It was "Riviera Paradise" and of course, Stevie Ray Vaughan, whom I had never heard of. And he was, the greatest blues rocker who ever strapped it on ...
The day Stevie Ray Vaughan died was a deep dark time for me I was going to see him September 27th 1990 it would have been the best concert I've ever seen I feel and I've been to a lot of good concerts
I saw Stevie on the west side docks along Hudson River when NYC opened them for concerts. Hot summer in the city with hot music By Stevie along the River.
What made him particularly unique and set him apart from even futuristic players like Jeff Beck was he was the most Rythym oriented of the Rock heroes since Hendrix, whether he was soloing or literally playing rythym. He sounded at times like Jimmy Nolan, James Browns guitarist, propelling the band to the point that he sounded like "2" guitarists simultaneously. Ck out the version of James Browns "Livin In America' thats got the extended Stevie solo and fasten your seat belt...also his collaboration w/ his brother Jimmie on the recording Family Style. specifically "Telephone Song" and "Baboom / Mama Said" and you'll know what Im sayin...
I had tickets to see Stevie Ray in London just after the accident and got a short letter from the venue, (i think it was Wembley Arena) saying they apologised for the inconvenience but the show had to be cancelled due to the accident. I was really shocked and numb when i heard the news of the accident but couldnt believe the wording of the cancellation letter, i mean five people had died and they thought 'inconvenience' was an apt word to describe it!
good excerpts from previous doc's on u tube, Bonnie Raitt said, there's no one that tears into it like Stevie did. i beleive it and he was such a humble player. Abert King also asks how do you get that, Stevie replied, I just keep trying
Miss SRV, So much.! As much as I love Eric Clapton, I appreciate the honesty that he gave of well Stevie played guitar. A true class act, acknowledging another, in his profession.!
I remember being about 15 years old, zapping through nightly TV.. Suddenly I saw this cool guy with the Hat on, playing my favorite hendrix song 'voodoo child'.. I was like 'sorry Jimmy.. But THIS is the real deal..'
The best summary of Stevie I ever heard was actually by Clapton. He said (and I’m paraphrasing) but that Stevie never seemed to dry up or run out of ideas. It’s so true. There’s a few guys (Bloomfield was like that) that just seemed to never get to the end of a run and say oh shit what next.
A few of my friends were there live for that show at Alpine Valley. The funny thing is that they told me they were going to the Stevie Ray gig... no mention of Clapton although it appears he was the top of the bill. So this was the 2nd time in Claptons life he witnessed a guitar that was far superior to him - the first being Hendrix. Both times he expressed self doubt and such. We all love Hendrix and Vaughn for what they were... but the true heroes are those that survive and live. Clapton has endured so much including the death of his young son. He is a survivor and a beast of a man.
2 of the worlds best ever, Clapton has had some real tragedy in his life and he’s still going. The family and friends he’s lost at a young age. God bless Stevie, absolute tragedy, taken way before his time x
So many great guitarist always said he was the best. They referenced that he could play anybody’s music without missing a lick, but NO ONE could play his music lick for lick! He was that unique! I’m not saying that when guitarist play his songs that they don’t sound authentic, but only great guitarist understand what I mean.
All of the talk about SRV being sober! In hindsight it was a good thing but as far as a difference in his masterful guitar skills, it didn't matter one damn bit because high, drunk or sober SRV was the greatest Guitarist ever to play! The sky is still crying but I get so tired of hearing people talk about his sobriety! It was his personal decision to become sober but tell me just how many great musicians are in the category? The answer is; Slim ta None and Slim just walked out the damn door!
I attended the first show at Alpine Valley it was a great set. I got to see Stevie Ray 10 times. Best time ever saw him though was when he was touring with Jeff Beck in 89.90.
We had tickets to go to see Eric Clapton the very next night after the crash. I remember waiting to hear the announcement whether the concert would continue or be canceled. The concert was a 2 and a half hour drive, and they announced it WOULD be a "go". We got there early, sat in hot sun until sundown when concert began. Eric played a tribute to Stevie, tears running down his cheeks. We were all feeling the loss of SRV too..but thankful to have seen EC. RIP Stevie❤ YOU ARE MISSED!! Fortunately I was able to see Stevie in concert before he passed away🌹💙
I remember exactly where i was, what i was doing and my thoughts when i heard it on tthe tv through an open window at my dads old house. I found out a few years ago that had someone foubd stevie he could have been saved. I will say no more but it aint just "a tragedy" its a straigh up god dmn shame for him forget about us ...... RIP Stephen
I chose to work late the day of SRV's untimely death. I was supposed to see that show. While I am sad that I never got to see him play live, I am considerably more distressed thinking about the loved ones left behind. I can only imagine what JLV has lost, brother and guitar soul mate. BEST AND PEACE to the friends, band mates and family of SRV.
Clapton couldn't handle Peter Green and refused to stand side by side with Gary Moore on stage and long before that old slow hand witnessed first hand the power of Jimi Hendrix and even admitted after witnessing Hendrix on stage, ''guess we're gonna have to go home and learn guitar again''.
Eric should of been focusing on his child rather than music. But then of course he couldn't write 'tears from heaven' or some crap. Clapton needed heroin or catshorpy
SRV was a great player so was Duane as we’re lots of players from that era hard to pick out best of the bunch but Clapton is on a different plain once in a generation talent he was his generations Charlie Parker we won’t see the likes of him again in our life time.

Stevie stuck his toe in the jazz waters a few times but he was not a jazzer.
@@allthingsclassicrock i never said he was a full jazz player.... you literally comparing full time jazz players with a blues player.... stevie played some jazz: stangs swang, chitlin con carne are both jazz songs, he then used jazz influences in lenny and riviera paradise. Like i said, the el mecambo performance is untouchable
I saw Clapton in St Louis right after the accident. I’ve seen Eric 4 times and that was the most emotional playing I’ve ever seen from him.
I was at my local bar. The jukebox still used CDs. It randomly played and I was blown away. I was 25 (2005)
I remember exactly where I was when I heard that my favorite guitar player died. I just got home from work and heard it on the news. We just moved into our new dream home and I just went out to the back padio and cried for about an hour. A terrible day for so many people.
Thanks for this bro
Absolutely. Tremendous loss
Thanks for the comment bro
As Eric is a good fellow, he is always well spoken about many pals---he says "the best" of Duane, Albert Lee, Robert Cray, George, Prince, Jimi.., Mark.. "I think Robert cray has more talent in any nail than my in all my body.... Only the bad ones critizise badly.
He wasn’t that complementary when Jan Akkerman won guitarist of the year in 1973.
50 years ago mate, move on! 🙄
@@marcelboogaard3809 Thats funny ! Akkerman is a bitch "Answers Questions Questions Answers'...or maybe its the other way around LOL..But Jans a monster : "Focus" !
I pulled over in my 1979 Firebird Formula the first time I heard him too. It is hard to describe how different he was from most music on the airwaves in the early 80s. I saw him on July 1, 1987 in Mansfield, MA. He was otherworldly good that night.
Every week I drive by Alpine Valley to get to work and just shake my head at how one hill could take so much greatness
When Eric Clapton is in awe of your skills you must be pretty good.
Of Coors 👍🏻much Respect to him .
First heard Stevie as a teenager learning guitar. He was the big inspiration as far as guitarists go back in the day. I'm so happy to see young guitarists learning his style on you tube and killing it. To this day I miss him not being here.
Yeah. AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. WOW. I REMEMBER THAT SHOW. SRV. MADE A IMPRESSION ON ME ....
Great post 👍
I too, did that thing where you hear a song on the car radio and had to run into the house and call the radio station to find out who it was ... It was "Riviera Paradise" and of course, Stevie Ray Vaughan, whom I had never heard of. And he was, the greatest blues rocker who ever strapped it on ...
I can hardly even watch this. The music is straight up beautiful
Saw him with Cocker in Vancouver the week before the crash. First time was in 84 when a friend insisted I go see him play. Blown away. What a talent
@@kevinmurphy4595 I'll check out the JB tune. Your right about family style. Had that cd since it came out
I had tickets to see Stevie Ray in London just after the accident and got a short letter from the venue, (i think it was Wembley Arena) saying they apologised for the inconvenience but the show had to be cancelled due to the accident.
I was really shocked and numb when i heard the news of the accident but couldnt believe the wording of the cancellation letter, i mean five people had died and they thought 'inconvenience' was an apt word to describe it!
The Greatest too ever touch a guitar
Wanna listen to 'Let's Dance' again after what Clapton said here.
good excerpts from previous doc's on u tube, Bonnie Raitt said, there's no one that tears into it like Stevie did. i beleive it and he was such a humble player. Abert King also asks how do you get that, Stevie replied, I just keep trying
Miss SRV, So much.! As much as I love Eric Clapton, I appreciate the honesty that he gave of well Stevie played guitar. A true class act, acknowledging another, in his profession.!
Amen
Much Respect to Eric 👍🏻
I remember being about 15 years old, zapping through nightly TV.. Suddenly I saw this cool guy with the Hat on, playing my favorite hendrix song 'voodoo child'.. I was like 'sorry Jimmy.. But THIS is the real deal..'
Gone too soon. Miss you SRV.
SRV was a Badass!
Brilliant
Thanks bro
Who & what version of Little Wing is the closing track ?
Probably the Goose man!
👍🇦🇺
Yes, thanks all!
Great work once again Mr Goose!
You do the outro Little Wing brah?
Nice, nice
👍🇦🇺
Thanks bro🙏 yes that's me on the outro.
All the tone was his,, as surely as our lives are
redeemed by the creator ! take your place SRV.
Thanks Brother , thats some good work . keep up the good . SRV .. ❤ FOREVER !! 😅🎉😊
Thank you
I f-ing loved SRV!! The Best guitarist on the planet!!!! God Bless Stevie.
Yes Eric knew - Stevie was from the Third Rock From The Sun 👍🏻
2 of the worlds best ever, Clapton has had some real tragedy in his life and he’s still going. The family and friends he’s lost at a young age.
God bless Stevie, absolute tragedy, taken way before his time x
Thanks for the comment
So many great guitarist always said he was the best. They referenced that he could play anybody’s music without missing a lick, but NO ONE could play his music lick for lick! He was that unique! I’m not saying that when guitarist play his songs that they don’t sound authentic, but only great guitarist understand what I mean.
great comment
Yeah that man from austin texas sure could play love stevie ray rest in peace SRV.🎸🎸
DAMMIT - Your GOD took him.
Stevie Ray wll always be my most fave of them all.. i love Eric too.. both my heros
ditto
I remember exactly where i was, what i was doing and my thoughts when i heard it on tthe tv through an open window at my dads old house.
I found out a few years ago that
had someone foubd stevie he could have been saved.
I thought Stevie Ray Vaughan was really short compared to the 5 foot10 Eric Clapton
How tall was stevie.?
Eric should of been focusing on his child rather than music. But then of course he couldn't write 'tears from heaven' or some crap. Clapton needed heroin or catshorpy
i always wondered if there was something hinky going on with eric clapton regarding stevie's death, but now i'm not so sure,
SRV was a great player so was Duane as we’re lots of players from that era hard to pick out best of the bunch but Clapton is on a different plain once in a generation talent he was his generations Charlie Parker we won’t see the likes of him again in our life time.
Whose version of Little Wing was that at the end?
Thats just my version I put together for this video, thanks.
@@TheGuitarShow Killer. Nice chops, very tasty arrangement. Enjoying it.
