  • In this extensive 5-hour course, students focus on the construction of an oil painting and the process of layering paint rather than actual brushwork and design. To truly master oil painting, you have to know how to build a sound substructure or base, and then apply the paints in such a way as to ensure decades of life for the painting.
    Students are taken step-by-step through topics such as supports, sizing, grounds, an imprimatura, the underdrawing, the underpainting, upper layers of paint, and varnish. Each layer is explained thoroughly and clearly, and then followed up with related demonstrations so that students can follow along.

      Items are very individual, but here is what I would recommend:
      Oil Paints (a good place to start is one red, one blue, one yellow, 1-2 earth tones, black, and white). Color selection is very individual.
      Painting surfaces. For a beginner, I would first learn the basics of oil painting using pre-prepared surfaces, such as a pre-gessoed canvas or panel. Cheap canvas panels are good for practicing brushwork without spending much and before you begin painting formal paintings, but always use better surfaces for formal paintings.
      Brushes (everyone is unique, but here is my recommendation)
      1 large bristle filbert brush (approx. size 8-12)
      1 medium filbert (size 6-8, bristle or synthetic)
      1 medium rounds bristle brush
      1 small round synthetic brush (size 3-6)
      Painting palette. I like the gray New Wave palettes, but you can simply use a piece of dulled-edge glass, acrylic sheet, or inexpensive wood palette.
      One basic palette knife for mixing your paints (and applying paint if you like)
      The next three items are standard supplies, but it IS possible to paint without either. You just have to manage the thinness and timing of your layers.
      Drying oil to add when thinning paint at times (I like walnut oil)
      Solvent of choice - handy for thinning paint and cleaning difficult brushes. I recommend Gamsol.
      Inexpensive (sealable) container to hold the solvent used when you paint
      Paper towels
      Plastic cups and vegetable oil for cleaning brushes
      Artist’s soap (optional, but nice to have)
      Trash bag
      An easel is very handy, but you can simply paint with your surface flat on a table as well. Just make sure you protect the surface.
      I hope this is helpful!

    Hello, in your research for this video did you come across the Calcite Sun Oil method by Louis R. Velasquez for oil painting? I've been looking into it, but as a complete beginner I can't tell whether the information or technique is sound.

      No, I have never heard of it. I searched on Google very quickly and don't see a lot of information on it, which tends to send up a red flag. That said, what I do see sounds fairly positive. I wish I could offer more insight.

    Hello Jill I would like to try this medium but would like to know about the best practice re safety and disposal of materials. I've read all sorts of scary advice not to do oil painting if you don't have a proper studio; to eschew linseed oil, cadmiums and so on. Does your course address these issues?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  2 роки тому

      It does to a degree. If I don’t touch on the toxicity enough in the class, you can also check the Q&A section of the course. Just search with the word “toxic” and you should see some additional information. Really, oil paints are perfectly safe if you select paints that don't use toxic pigments and if you avoid (or limit the use of) solvents. The paints themselves are simply made of pigment, drying oil, and sometimes harmless additives. It's the pigment selection that can be a problem, so avoid colors such as cadmiums, cobalts, cerulean, viridian, nickel azo yellow, lamp black, zinc white, and chromium oxide green.
      The only other concern is using a solvent. There is a safe-ish product called Gamsol, but it's still not considered non-toxic. But...you can actually paint without using a solvent, and I do discuss some strategies in the course. I, myself, hardly use solvent.
      As for disposal of material, that is one topic I don't really address. The one precaution you may want to take is to use a separate trash container for your painting scraps and trash. When you're done painting, just tie it up and throw it in the normal trash bin. If you use any solvent, you can just drizzle a little water over the trash before tying it up. I don't put it in the outside bin until trash pick-up day if the weather is very warm. Other than that, I know you'll read a lot of scary things online, but I've never had a problem (using that one precaution). If there is very little or no solvent in the trash, I don't stress over its disposal. I feel quite safe with my strategy, but, you may find more precautions listed online.
      I hope that's helpful. If you decide to take the class you can always message me at any time with additional questions. I'm happy to help.

    Did medium is necessary in oil paint?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  3 роки тому +2

      Do you mean what medium is needed to paint in oil, Parween? If so, you can actually complete a painting without any medium at all - just straight paint from the tube. In this case, you would just need to make sure you apply your layers thin to thick (ie scrub on the first layer and work your way to a slightly more impasto application). Mediums can be added such as a form of solvent (Gamsol, mineral spirits, etc) or additional oil or an oil/alkyd blend. These change how the paint performs. Depending on the medium, it may thin the paint, bulk the paint, change the drying time, or change the sheen of the dried paint.

    As a beginner which paper is best for oil paint ?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  3 роки тому +1

      If you're still getting the hang of oil painting, you may want to pick up less expensive oil paper (Canson or Strathmore) just for practicing. Unlike watercolor paper, the lesser paper shouldn't impact your application too, too much. Then, when you feel ready to begin painting compositions (even as a beginner), you could bring in the better oil paper, such as Arches Oil paper. I always think it would be a shame to do a painting you end up wanting to keep on less archival paper. Arches brand has a good reputation and is fairly affordable. Hahnemuhle also makes an oil paper, and that is a reputable brand as well.
