If we are going to expand the SCOTUS, we may want to follow the thinking of 1869, when the current number was established by Congress. Back then, we had nine Federal Courts of Appeal, a population of 38,558,371 and did not allow Blacks or women to vote, and we had 37 states. Now we have 13 Federal Courts of Appeal, a population of between 335,893,238 and 345,694,376, depending on the source, and 50 states. I believe the SCOTUS should be a reflection of that.
I also believe in term limits, but that would require a Constitutional amendment.

In Wisconsin, for *15 YEARS,* Democratic votes for state candidates and initiatives were in the strong majority more than 90% of the time, but we only very rarely won an election due to gerrymandered maps giving republicans a supermajority in both houses. Personally, this has affected me, because people with severe chronic pain have been determined to be criminals by our legislature and are either no no longer able to get opioid medication, because their physicians are regulated by a MAGA filled “medical board” which has the power to take their licenses to practice if they go outside the “legitimate opioid use is banned” parameter. For long standing chronic pain sufferers as I am, this criminalizing of a legitimate medical condition means that _my daily dosage of an opioid-which had managed my pain to a level that I could stand it _*_FOR 15 YEARS_*_ without one increase-had to be cut by 90%._ Just think about that for a minute. *My dogs get better pain management after surgery or injury than I do, and THIS IS INHUMANE AND DISGUSTING!!!* We are so debilitated in our daily lives-I am now in bed 95% of my life-that we can’t get together and fight it. This is fascism, vile, cruel, and completely unnecessary.

Up here in the great State of Maine all of our incarcerated citizens have full voting rights. This does no harm unless you unless you think trying to include those of us who have so far have already failed to actually participate for whatever reasons in those civil and social obligations that help all of us strive to participate for a better future will in the end pay off as a collective whole.
Does further exclusion from our social norms only give them extra motivation to work on being a more useful members of what you are already excluding them from? If punishment is the goal and rehabilitation is not a desired outcome at what cost to our common welfare are you willing to pay for this punishment?

TLDW: The interview with former Attorney General Eric Holder primarily focuses on his role in vetting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate. Holder explains that the vetting process was notably intense and fast-paced, taking only 15 days to complete. He assembled a team of 70 lawyers from his firm, Covington and Burling, to review potential candidates. Holder highlights that Governor Walz was chosen due to his strong record as Minnesota’s governor, his military career, and his chemistry with Harris. Despite the time constraints, Holder expresses confidence in the thoroughness of the vetting process and in Walz’s potential as a vice president.
Holder also touches on his experiences with similar vetting processes, such as the one that led to Joe Biden becoming Barack Obama’s running mate. He reflects on the political challenges and criticisms surrounding Governor Walz, particularly regarding his support for voting rights for former felons, which Holder defends as a progressive and historically significant stance.
Beyond the vetting process, Holder discusses his continued commitment to voting rights and redistricting through his work with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. He addresses concerns about gerrymandering, the role of the Supreme Court in current political issues, and potential reforms, including expanding the court and imposing term limits on justices. Holder downplays rumors about him potentially becoming White House Chief of Staff, emphasizing his contentment with his career thus far.

I am suspicious of term limits. I think it would go a VERY long way just to write and enforce strict ethics guidelines. Decent salary, benefits, retirement plan, should they retire. ZERO participation in investing. ZERO income from sources besides their job. If they can't be happy on the salary and generous pension, I don't want them on the court.

There is a certain elegance to lifetime appointments and service, but ensuring political power to already wealthy people without the ability to remove them outside of impeachment is the way you get a court that is not representative of the people's will.
You are not going to incentivize rich people with a salary. They are only incentivized by influence; term limits are a way to balance that tendency.

I disagree with Eric Holder on the expansion of the SCOTUS. It may work in a Democratic presidency, House and Senate but what happens when there is a vacancy during a Republican administration. We could find ourselves in the same predicament as we do now. I think term limits are a more reasonable option and that every Justice of SCOTUS go through a process every 2-3 years that would be tantamount to a re-vetting with medical and psychological testing included.
