I watched SiCKO (again), provided free by Michael Moore's Substack the other day. The point that stuck with me was that Americans fear their government and dare not protest against the wretchedness of the "healthcare" system, while in France, the politicians fear the anger of the people and dare not interfere with the healthcare the French people enjoy. Power to the people!
In the UK the National Health Service was set up after the Second World War and changed the face of healthcare in the country. To take just one case, the graph detailing the incidence of neonatal mortality drops like a stone when the NHS arrives. The Minister who was instrumental in setting it up, Aneurin Bevin, a Welsh firebrand, resigned when the new service had to introduce a small 'prescription charge' simply to help the service cope with short term cash-flow problems. Bevin believed passionately that the entire service should be free at the point of delivery. The service has had its ups and downs, and something in the British public's mass personality means that it is always ready to complain about the shortcomings rather that sing the praises of the immense advantages means that the press can always make copy out of the former. It is still an amazing service and publicly funded from taxation. Long may it survive.
From my mother: Did u ever see Roger & Me? Moore is as hideously inconspicuous as I am, and he goes where no man has gone before they realize he's been there! One of the best documentaries ever! I will never forget the young woman raising rabbits & wringing their necks matter-of-factly in order to eat. Or the belongings of a laid-off evicted auto worker on the sidewalk on Christmas Eve, while Michael infiltrated the GM CEO's lavish Christmas party. And here we r - SOS, different millenia
You saying someone is preventing you from being pain free? Many states have very low premium insurance or free insurance for those who qualify. If you are not in one of those states, then move to one.
The healthcare system isn’t “broken” it’s been well designed to extract as much wealth as possible from Americans society, while spending the least amount of money/care as possible…just like the shareholders want it…because in America Wall Street traders are the most important people

As a septuagenerian, it is wonderful and heartwarming to see Robert Reich, one of our national treasures, have a coffee klatch with young men who he is old enough to be their grandfather. They obviously respect him and visa versa. The old and the young can be a great force for our democracy. I see how Senator Sanders and Rep. AOC are on the same page. We need each other.
I think the raising of generations in, especially The States, is so focused on the terms of capitalism, that the value of human needs, as beings, is run over by whishes of wealth and succes over all. Concentrated as it is today, we're just looking at the result of the dark side of capitalism. And yes, wealth is "freedom" for the very few. American (and others) lost freedom for regular cityzens. 🤔
@pvw732 Succes is ok. The terms how they continously increase their wealth - by their untaxed gained wealth is not ok. That wealth is "paid" by lower income cityzens, who can't afford to invest in taxfree gains (income/wealth). 🤔

Project 2025 says that original Medicare will be eliminated and all seniors will be forced into private Medicare Advantage plans that have restrictive pay out policies requiring preapprovals for needed medical care where people are often forced into the appleal/denial loop. Filing complaints with State OIC’s are time consuming and often result in deterioration or death while waiting for decisions. SSI and Medicaid will also be reduced to (blue) state level funding in Project 2025 and will be forced to reduce services and increase costs. It will take them one year to accomplish this unless the public outrage is large enough to scare them.
Robert I met you in Cleveland, Ohio with Dick Acton and went to lunch together. The way you talked then is not the sugar coated version of today. I hope this shooting in The health care industry is a wake up call to other CEO'S in the USA to show leadership and respect to the very people who will go to war to keep America safe from any country that would try to invade us. In their eyes our life means nothing except to protect their corporations safe from an invasion and themselves especially as they will be much to important to serve as a soldier protecting America, but it's our honor to die for them look at bone spurs 5 time deferment because he is such a sad sack and only cares about himself if you listened to anything his niece has said about how he cheats everybody in his family. Don't cow tow to his plan to ruin America this term by soft selling his bullshit robbing us blind this term. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.😊
I know why he's becoming a folk hero. Robin Hood. People are sick and tired of rich people taking everything away from the poor. And there hasn't been anything anyone has been able to do about it. Health care, food, housing. All basic human rights.
they voted in a billionaire and all of his millionaire and billionaire friends, so anyone who voted for them actually hasn't a single thing of value to say it.
But this new administration has already appointed the richest cabinet in history. These billionaires will look after the middle and low income American earners, right?
I can explain why he's a hero. We are hurting and feel he "spoke" our pain. Our family tried to get my hubs of 47 years. A realistic my young man. Not yet 65. He needed a heart transplant. The health events surrounding his illness and the tests. Moving near the hospital. We endured refusal due to money. Two insurance companies. 90% coverage/ cash/assets. Medically approved. Financially denied. What is our life worth? The insurance company drains Medicare. Is a major PBM. And even does payday loans for Doctors so the doctors can pay bills while waiting for payment. WTF is this system? Its a DEATH PANEL. IT IS VIOLENCE ON US. That's why we support the message even if we don't support murder.
That's a good point about the drs. I heard someone state, they never had been a problem with procedures because the insurance companies told her to let the drs/hospitals deal with paying for her procedures, it's their problem, not the insurance companies. Also another lady who is married to a surgeon said her husband will do procedures & then will have to sue the insurance companies to be reimbursed. & cross his fingers

Bob, (I hope you will forgive my presumption since I am well-educated and 71), perhaps Mangione made the decision to make his life count for something big, i.e., calling attention to the unscrupulous practices of the healthcare insurers. From what I have heard, the amount of denied claims by United Healthcare is unconscionable. Was this the correct solution? Absolutely not. But our lawmakers have failed for decades to provide the correct solution. If appropriate action is delayed long enough, this is what happens. Let those who have ears hear.

You aren't going to be out on the street. We have countless apartments in this country that accept rent in a sliding scale. You're just going to be living in poverty. You will have to sell your house, car, camper, motorcycle, etc. But you won't be homeless, and if that's what you are afraid of then let it be a reminder of how privileged you really are. Until you end up in subsidized housing with less than $2000 in assets, you really don't have the privilege of complaining (even if you voted). Complaining is for the privileged, so check yourself. Look at what's going on in this country. You aren't special because you are retired or disabled. I'm in the same boat, which means - No lives matter. Not mine, not yours, no one, not even the president and all his 1% buddies. Are they any better off than me? Because I live on a fixed income, less than $1000 a month, food stamps, energy assistance. Are they going to take my food, water and electricity away? Definitely not, because they would be cutting off the majority of our citizens, and we are already fighting back in violent ways. There's always a spike in crime, thanks to Trump. We have a criminal for a leader. His margin of winning is all the felons who voted for him. And then you have the felons who don't support him, and that's who is running this country. He has divided us, and it's not safe to go out on the street, especially if you are blue in a red county (me). Here is an example of our wonderful healthcare system at work...or not! As some of you know, a few weeks ago I experienced my first stroke. My PCP ordered up a CTA and MRI of my head. Follow the numbers... 1. The first scheduled MRI was canceled because I have a pacemaker implanted. They told me to go to the VA for my MRI. I discussed this with my VA Primary, but nothing was done about it. 2. My PCP ordered a 2nd MRI at a different location. Once they learned that I had a specific brand and type of pacemaker, my appointment was canceled. My pacemaker is a Bio-Tronik brand and has the ability to be MRI compliant. (Around here the favored brands are MedTronik, and Boston Scientific.) 3. I went back to my VA Primary, and he had set me up for an MRI at Fort Novosel Medical Facility. That appointment was yesterday (Monday). I drove 228miles round-trip for that appointment. When I arrived, I was informed that it was canceled, as their MRI unit (open mri) was not compatible with any pacemakers. So, now, after phone calls this morning, to the nurses of my PCP and VA Primary, a 4th attempt is being made to get me an MRI appointment, location TBD at this time. There is although, a need for urgency here, as the results of my CTA came back, reporting that my left carotid artery is occluded at 100%! WTF! And people have such misgivings about our healthcare system? I wonder why!!!

We don’t have to endure four more years of Trump and his policies, that’s the fallacy that they are using to delude us! We never even have to consider the Election that they determined Trump as the President-Elect, as the election is not part of the Constitutionally established process to determine the President of the United States, and even if he were sworn in as the President, the States as the Union could impeach him as he was taking the oath of office, which would remove Trump from office immediately until the States in the Senate could consider the impeachment, and when they convicted him, creating a vacancy in the Office of the President, they could immediately determine the time of choosing the electors and the day on which the electors would give their votes, a day which shall be the same throughout the United States, as the very next day, and require that the Electors transmit their certified and sealed list of All persons receiving votes, then number of votes each person received and for which office to be the close of business EST that same day. Then they could open those certificates the next day to determine if any person received the required majority of All the Electors, which is a majority of All the People, to become President, if no person received a majority of All the Electors, then only the top 3 persons on the aggregate list for President and the top 2 persons on the aggregate list for Vice President, would form ballots for the States to consider to determine their Choice by vote, 1 vote per State, and a majority of All the States is necessary to the choice. The person thusly determined to become president could be immediately informed and begin their term of office that same day, which would be two days after Inauguration Day for Trump!
Why is everyone so upset about a CEO (being investigated for insider trading). Children are slaughtered in their classrooms, and nothing happens to change things. This situation is uniting this country.
Mangione has caused one of the real issues in the States, to come into focus. The absolutely egregious situation of the Medicare system in the US, the feeling of frustration by people who have had health issues, but suddenly find themselves with no support for them and may actually find their financial security jeopardized. And as Robert says, the CEO’s of these corporations are making out like bandits, profits through the roof. This incident has focused people’s minds on this issue. This is really at the base of why so many in America are angry and unsettled about what’s happening. The unfair balance between corporations and truly wealthy people in the country, and the average citizen, who is struggling to just keep on top of their lives, cost wise is at the root of the restlessness and political upheaval in the US.
Everything this country was and is built on, is at the expense of the vulnerable populations of the world, the most necessary parts of ourselves, that of which does not have a voice, the pent-up trauma of oppression and aggression..
I recently read that a hospital put a lien on an elderly couples home for his heart surgery bill. There was 100,000 in interest alone. They did eventually get it dismissed thanks to some org that helped them. But so sad.
If you have not seen Michael Moore's movie, "Sicko", see it, or see it again. This movie was made in 2007 and is even more relevant today. More people and/or their families have been affected by the GREED of "our" health(care???) FOR-PROFIT system where PROFIT is the number one goal OVER human lives! You only have to be told from your health insurance company that the surgery your educated, trained doctor has recommended was DENIED because they deem it "experimental". Then your doctor fights them for approval finally giving up and telling you it is too bad that you are NOT on Medicare because they are APPROVING this very same surgery and your doctor shares with you that he is seeing the quality of his patient's lives have significant improvement. Let's be honest here. Medicare is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT system and the largest healthcare provider in the country as EVERYBODY over the age of 65 is on it. Medicare would NOT approve and pay for ANY treatment if there was NOT data and proof that the treatment works!!!
Hello, I am a Belgian who lived in England for 5 years and has lived in France for 40 years. The way Moore presents the American health system may be true, I'm not honestly able to judge, but what he says about England and France is caricatural and partially exaggerated and false. In Europe, the English system is one of the worst, even if it can't be called bad. In France, the system is excellent, protecting us from the fear of healthcare costs, and ensuring that everyone is treated, whatever their income level or nationality - even illegal immigrants, fortunately. But many abuse the system, and the wealthy are not the last to do so.
Dear Secretary Reich, you may not remember me, but I remember you very well. In 1994, I was detailed from EPA to OSHA to assist with the rule-making on Indoor Air and Secondhand Smoke. I also served on the panel that heard testimony on that rule, which was later sandbagged by Big Tobacco's minions in the Congress. I wrote about it in a chapter in my memoir, Enemy No. 1, Waging The War on Secondhand Smoke, by James L. Repace. I also want to say how much I enjoy your Coffee Klatches, and how much outrage I share with you and Heather over the disgraced felon, the world-class imbecile, Trump. Keep up the great work!

As a European, I find it absolutely incomprehensible that a so-called "civilised" Country like the States can have such an appalling and totally inadequate healthcare system!
The basic fact is that Government officials, representatives and all the people we voted into office is, "they work on our behalf", but their self-privilege, arrogance and blatant corruption is seldom addressed, the phenomenen of people rapidly becoming multi millionares after securing a seat in government should also be under an intense investigation.
Actually, most people don't become "multi millionaires after securing a seat in the government." It's that most Americans are paid so little and have to pay so much for everything they need (like healthcare) that people getting a good salary looks like being a millionaire. AOC has noted that she could get healthcare insurance only when she became a representative; it shouldn't be that way. People in government being well paid are not the problem, decent of good salaries for those jobs are a guardrail against corruption due to necessity. The problem is having millionaires in the government whose avowed intention is to cut taxes for themselves, allow mergers that enrich themselves more, slash environmental and labor regulations, and even create slavery via forcing inmates to work with little to no payment. The salaries politicians get pale in comparison to the policies they make than can harm generations of workers.

I don't want to be too critical of him, but we elected Biden specifically to address the criminality of the Trump regime. But Biden nominated probably the weakest AG in the history of Democratic nominations, and that AG did nothing about the criminality. Then Biden, who had promised to leave after one term decided to pursue a second term--when everyone in his cabinet had to know that he was no longer up to the job. Both of those things were inexcusable. So, of course, as voters, we learned a bit of helplessness.
But at the ballot box , whichever state, for president one has 2 choices. That is 50/50. The obvious is easy to see or read about, and the obvious is as vote for a crook of 60 years OR a way out. Now AMERICA HAS the same old, very very old person/system in play.
No matter what, Kamala was the better candidate, more so than Drumpf. We could hear it at her convention, rallies. Dems are for the people, trumplicans are for the rich.
Biden foolishly allowed pandemic benefits that people could really feel to lapse. He allowed Sinema and Manchin to deep-six Build Back Better, which would have extended many of those benefits. So he has no one but himself to blame for Trump's resurgence.
I'm pretty certain that the Fascist Party's plan for old and disabled people on Social Security and SSDI is for us to just go ahead and die. Elon Musk did say that the first couple of years would be a "hardship" for the bottom 80% of the American economic pyramid scheme. I imagine that the closer to the bottom of that pyramid one is, the harder that "hardship" will be. So I suppose all us old folks and cripples should all just obediently shut up and kick that bucket. Yes? They'll be coming for all of us pretty soon now. And I don't expect anything from the Democratic Party or any other officials but to go along and get along with trump & Co.'s anti-American agenda and send us away. I don't think it is just the insurance companies. Doctos are also responsible. Recently have had some small surgery at a major hospital in New York City, The first doctor charged Medicare $3500 for my office visit to determine the surgery and his partner, the head of the department charged Medicare $3000. Greed is the worst sickness there is. Because it has been so normalized in America.
I think the raising of generations in, especially The States, is so focused on the terms of capitalism, that the value of human needs, as beings, is run over by whishes of wealth and succes over all. Concentrated as it is today, we're just looking at the result of the dark side of capitalism.

(Around here the favored brands are MedTronik, and Boston Scientific.)
Wow I see what your saying. Please get better hopefully you get that MRI!! Your just one person there's more stories out there like that😢

Donald Rump won’t last and he will quickly retired by maga GOP. Trump is a tool for hungry powerful wealthy people waiting to run the US government
Trump is already declining mentally, he's going to be a basket case in a few years
We don’t have to endure four more years of Trump and his policies, that’s the fallacy that they are using to delude us!

Thank you gentlemen, for explaining how things can be turned around for we Democrats 💙💙💙

UHC did that to me years ago.

It is seldom addressed because the media is controlled by the billionaires who also control members of the House, Senate, and White House.
@@MariaMartinez-researcher That's true, but many elected officials--including Trump, of course, but also Democrats like Nancy Pelosi--manage to parlay their insider knowledge and their powerful connections into huge financial gains.
Thanks for the show guys! Robert you are a light in the darkness! Keep shining bright!
My big sister, who is now over 70, had both Polio and Cerebral Palsy as a child, and it made profound changes to her body for a lifetime. She could never balance on a bike or ever drive a car.
Thank you all for the discussion. The subservience even before the treasonous troll illegally takes office (amendment 14 section 3. He needs a 2/3 vote from Congress to legally take office but let’s just throw that out the window) is beyond concerning and I’m glad you brought it up. The parallels to fascist dictators of the past should be concerning enough to anyone with a basic knowledge of history. #resistance
Robert Reich is THE MAN!
Mr.RR, your panel is much much respectable analysts compared to mainstream and cable news media.
Thank you.
President Joe Biden is my man of the year. ❤
I definately get the gist of the laughter. It is better than crying. Your show is entertaining and knowledgeable at the same time. I loved the barb about Time mag., I haven't seen one of their magazines anywhere for a very long time. Ty and your guests.
Robert! Whether by design or happenstance - your putting some perspective and facts and background on what's going on actually helps me to get a better handle on what I need to do for me, first, for the "resistance" 2nd! Thank you so very much! Keep on keeping on!
Great show! Thank you!
Reminds me of the French Revolution times.
WE MUST RESIST!!!!
You must be very old. 😂
@@Harrokacharro That made me laugh and I’m thankful for that.
FACEBOOK PARTICULARLY DOES NOT LIKE you, Robert, because you ALWAYS KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON, AND TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT IT IN THE MEDIA !
Thanks Robert and your two guest discussants today, Dec 14th. I miss Heather but Vish is bright and very articulate and full of information. Please use him when he can.
Thanks, Robert Reich and Team for your commitment and courage! Learning a lot from you all ! 🎉🎉🎉
Well put.

Thank you, gentlemen.
I miss Heather. Still enjoy your chats with her best. But very much appreciate these young men and their perspectives.
All I have is social security and Medicare. If those go away I have nothing. No income at all. Worked all my life and paid in……
You can always play some Super Mario Bros.
That is what the majority of (white) voters wanted, eh?
Unfortunately for those Fvckers, I won't go quietly.
@@thomaswikstrand8397 Quiet junior. Grownups are talking.
Missed Heather today. It's more like a real coffee klatch when the two of you are sitting at the same table.
I agree re Heather. I hope Robert and Heather will have both of these guests on regularly.
We miss Heather too - but I’m excited to report she will return next week!
Trump is staffing this way to never leave the whitehouse again.
He'll leave in a body bag.
❤ The Coffee Klatch!! Thank you ALL for today’s segment!❤
I dislike the privatization of health care!
See the private Medicare plan called Advantage issued by United Healthcare, it’s a terrible plan. And now republicans want to privatize ALL of Medicare and education. Privatization of gov services doesn’t end well for the People.
Mainly why Health Care has gotten much worse.😅
Yes me too! It has come to that because of the "gross" profits that Kaiser makes and gets there by killing people financially or actually!!
Health care in America has always been private. But the financialization of health insurance, health care, and big pharma--the ever-growing emphasis on meeting Wall Street expectations--has made the healthcare system into a living hell.
@@lawsonj39 i.e. Reagan and Milton Friedman sold us a bill of goods, and we can't seem to undo the damage.
Lobbying is another evil that needs severe regulation. Money is ALWAYS the root of evil.
Love of money. Money in excess.
Luigi became a folk hero to many the second he fired the shot, standing up to cruel industry that profits by denying care. People are overestimating the role of his looks and background play.
I agree. He spoke out of US. That he's photogenic helped but he did what many of us fantasize about without intending to ever do.
@@mikehart5619 Totally. Perhaps his attractiveness turned him into a media sensation, but lots of media claims that's why people love him, when it's actually because he stood up to the system in a shocking way
I am extremely conservative and what I will say about Luigi is I will not identify him because my prescription glasses were denied.
This disdain doesn't stop at just the insurance companies. ALL C-Suite scumbags make life harder for the rest of us to feed their own greed.
I had a large grocery store based in Ohio as a client for several years. Their disdain for customers and relentless focus on making more profits was shocking to me.
I don't know about you, but I don't exist to "feed" corporate greed.
Exactly! The focus of the Luigi story has been on health insurance, but the same applies to health care companies, big pharma, media companies, and so many more corporate leaderships.
I don't think it is just the insurance companies. Doctos are also responsible. Recently have had some small surgery at a major hospital in New York City, The first doctor charged Medicare $3500 for my office visit to determine the surgery and his partner, the head of the department charged Medicare $3000. I understand they submit high charges because Medicare won't pay the full amount, but they still get paid the large balance by my secondary insurance, who have been very good in paying premiums. I am with Bernie. Medicare for all and then do away with this cat and mouse system.
@@lawsonj39 & it won't change under Trump. It will get worse in fact!
Thank you Robert. You do the most valuable service to the people of this nation and I feel the same angst that you express as I am a 75 year old progressive wandering in the U.S wasteland.
If these people are confirmed this nation will have so much farther to come back to what is right and good in this country!
Say what you will about “shocking” and “reprehensible” behavior but Mangione’s sacrifice jolted the system like pretentious talk and apologetics never will. He alone is motivating change. The rest of us are just endlessly talking bobbleheads.
Increase Democrats in the House and Impeach Trump!
Second that emotion!🇺🇸❤️🩹
that is not how i want my tax dollars spent. you
tried lawfare already. please get a new schtick...
We need to start the movement right now!
How about they grow a pair and block disqualified Trump: Article 14 still applies and they should force an Amnesty vote: does Trump earn clemency? If not 2/3 yes votes, then he's disqualified and can't get electors!
But Democrats will never do what is right until their corporate handlers allows it...
@@john-o1g9pYou're using the term "lawfare" incorrectly, but I will give you that language does change. Regardless, I urge you to do your research not only on the cases you're claiming were "lawfare" but also on the laws that were violated.
Several days ago (shortly after the murder), a dear friend on mine, and a true pillar of our community, was discharged from the hospital to rehab, as he was still, physically a bit weak, and not quite stable enough to go home. He was notified on the morning of his release, that his UHC Advantage plan had denied the transfer to rehab, and they would need to self pay, or take their chances, recovering at home! And we wonder why people are fed up??!! My friend has served this community for decades as a dedicated teacher and volunteer in our community. And this is what he gets!? Is this what we should all expect after paying premiums our entire career?? This is robbery... It is failure to provide the services we have invested thousands of dollars in, expecting it to be there when we need it most.
Such a bad Health Care System. Some States in Africa do better than the US. I love this podcast. So relaxing and yet so informative. Thx!😊❤
