I automated mine in 1981 by installing SS25-1001 stepping motors run by a pair of CY512 Stepping Motor Controllers that I used with a Sinclair ZX81. The membrane keyboard was perfect for use around chips and grease.
I got mine for my 40th birthday 28 years ago and love it. The tailstock mod for moving the chuck forward is awesome. It was a PITA having to relocate it every time you reached full stroke with the lever.
I hate to disappoint you, but the bed is soft steel. mine has been scratched and dented quite easily. And if you don't oil it, it will rust quite rapidly. Love the tail stock idea. the lever is just totally rediculess.
I don't own one of these but isn't there an advantage to the lever - if things go awry you could just pull back on the lever and you're out of there. With the screw it would be slower and potentially more dangerous, no?
@@KT-TV do you now the material of the Chuck, is it just steel? the one I got must just be an older version of the current one. Also do you know where I can purchase the belt that is supposedly 2mm wide because I can't find any on eBay or Amazon?

Thank you for the share, we love our TAIG machines for what we use them for they are great, enjoy it.
Lance & Patrick.

Can this taig micro lathe cut hard steel?
Like the variable speed set up . Tailstock set up good idea , maybe needs a depth guage ? Will try on mine ....
How much did you buy this lathe for?
£175 eBay
I bought the same model, how do u tighten the Chuck?
On the chuck there are two holes. You put a round bar in each one and push one forward and one back to tighten or release.
I keep the bars handy by gluing a rare earth magnet somewhere near the headstock.
@@KT-TV ahh it's weird because mine only has one hole not 2. So I have to use my hand other hand to lock it but it's not going to be tight
Drill another hole

You know your tail stock Chuck shouldn't be turning, right?
Yes it should. The feed is a screw feed not the stock lever feed which as missing so I was turning it which advanced the bit.
Where did you get the speed controller
Amazon...there are loads. Get one capable of the current required for your motor
What size is the scooter motor?
24v 120W ZY6812 from eBay...£16.49....cheap as chips! 🤣
Thanks, Is that size adequate for the materials that you turn, mild steel, brass, aluminum?
@@colinbutterfield8580 Plenty of torque...remember it's a delicate precision micro lathe...
Thanks , motor is en route, do you remember the shaft diameter? Was there any issue removing the ribbed belt sleeve?
@@colinbutterfield8580 I used a small bearing puller available on eBay
What pulley is used on the motor ? Where to get one?
I think you could try TAIG USA..this was on it when I got it on eBay
@@KT-TV Thank you, Sir. I will have a look at Taig USA. At first on the motor side it looks non-standard.
@@michael1unknown oh..the motor. I made that on my larger lathe.
@@KT-TV ah, OK. Thanks! Finally it's again the beloved ''chicken or egg'' problem... :-)

Well actually it IS 5 syllables because the correct spelling is aluminium 🤷♂
Why do you make chips next to a sink?
Vic Vinegar It goes with the fish Vic....😂😂😂
