In my wildest moments of imaging what I may do with great wealth I have often thought how great it would be to own a superyacht sized submarine.
Now this dream could become reality!
Many Thanks to SuperYacht Times for helping me put together the information for this vlog!

A custom support tender that would shadow this vessel would really extend the range and function of this sub. Really spectacular!

I like the sub ideas.I even talked about the idea with some family once, about why people haven't bought the old navy retired and modified them into cruisers?Of course you won't be diving to 10,000 feet, but some lights, and a few observation windows would make 100 feet down look marvelous to people who can't scuba dive,or just want to putt about and see real fish in their habitat and corral reefs. This was a fun video, and thank you for all your previous ones too.(Don't wave at a mirror and say 3 times, "Nick where are you"?You may find out).

well there are 3 major problems with the idea of using retired Navy subs, Navy subs:
      A. are just about as far away from luxury as you get, these are very cramped weapon's delivery platforms
      B. outside of Politiking, the Navy rarely retires submarines that *haven't* got extensive use out of, most of these boats at the end of their service life are heavily worn out.
      C. Any attempt to make significant modifications to fix either of the first two problems (or add windows as you suggest) would ultimately be more expensive then just building a new submarine.

Thank you David for talking about the subs. For me, having a sub on a yacht would be a necessity, just like the tender. Even though I am a certified diver, there are just too many places I want to visit that are just beyond Scuba. It also would allow me to show the non divers in the family the beauty of what lies below the surface.

For the billionaire who has everything, the ambition should be to carry a yacht on a sub. Challenge with that would probably be the yacht because there are already submarines with docks and hangars to carry other vessels. Snag would be the yacht would also effectively need to be submersible, or you'd only be able to launch it while surfaced. And where's the fun in that?
(Also check out the latest ROVs, they've been coming down in cost and capability, so it's relatively (in yacht-money terms) to get an ROV and let guests explore from the surface)

Fit it with a diesel-electric system and significant tankage, and lose the tether to the dock altogether. Fit the interior out as a personal residence vs a restaurant attraction, and just disappear into the depths. Maybe even cover the top deck with sealed solar panels, so you can surface and recharge a bit with the sun. Stormy weather on the surface? No problem, just dive a few hundred feet and forget about it. Explore the wonders of the sea in peace and quiet, while sipping your favorite beverage and listening to your favorite tune. Imagine the serenity of travel in something like that.
You'd have to have Elon Musk-level money to make it happen, but it would be absolutely amazing, and worth every penny. Can you imagine the exclusivity of chartering something like this? So many possibilities. U.S. Subs did something like this about a decade ago, at least as a concept. No idea if any ever made it into production, though. I hope this one does. I'd love to see it made a reality, even if I only get to see it on UA-cam.

LOL, great video David. I've always dreamt of being able to take submarine "Diving" tours up and down the east coast of Australia (and the West coast if I can find the money for a 2nd sub!). But my 'tours' would have a twist. Passengers would not only look out the windows in awe at the destinations they chose to go to, they would be able to don diving equipment and exit the sub once we arrive at the site/s. Then they could complete a proper scuba dive in real time only coming back to the sub to decompress at their leisure. It would have a Jacuzzi, hot showers, a sealable plunge pool usable at any depth, enough airlocks for 12 people to rotate through their dives, a bar for those not diving, a theatre for showing educational videos on sea life etc., and a fully equiped kitchen and mess for meals. A lot of dive charter companies can NOT operate in rough seas. However, a sub can bypass all that surface drama whilst being as shallow as just 6m, it can then deliver divers to their destinations without the fuss of hammering through raging seas as they head out to the dive site. So ALL of the above amenities are necessary as I think people would pay good money to be able to experience such a thing. If only someone would pick up my idea.
Perhaps I should start a go fund me page...

the main issue I see, is looking at their website is they are very slow (3-6 knots depending on which model), and while for pleasure expropriation or scientific research it is fine, as a Yacht, they would have to get the speeds closer to military submarine speeds (slow ones are 15knots, many are 20+). Great concept, but maybe the technology for a luxury sub with large glass windows with a reliable speed level isnt there yet. However I really want to explore some reefs with their explorer subs, if I had money.

£185 million Euromillions tonight. Surely one could afford a Silent 60 or 80 and all its (hopefully greatly reduced) running costs (especially if you decide to live onboard for the rest of your life)? It looks like one could just about single-hand that - but with 185 million maybe a couple of staff wouldn't go amiss - and hire a Captain for longer trips. And then lease it out for a few weeks of the year to cover those extras while you go visit the family in the mountains.
I lived on a 60ft blue water sailing yacht for a year and a half. Cost a fair whack but offset by other land lubber costs I didn't have to pay. It's the depreciation that stings - if you sell - and those everyday individual items which fail one by one sure do add up over time. And when that time to sell comes - everything needs to be ship shape if you want a sale at all... or lose even more off the sale price selling as a 'project' for the new owner.

The sub idea is great, I am sure it would be popular. There is one very serious concern. I'm a former US Navy Submariner, Ohio Class. SSBN737. Once in a while, while on patrol and submerged, we would get nudged or bumped by blue whales. You could feel the contact but it never damaged anything. The whale weighs about 150 tons and the submarine just shy of 17,000 tons. The whales do this because when they see something they think is another whale or potential mate, and it doesn't answer the whale bumps you as if to say "Um Hello, talking to you". What's going to happen if this custom sub gets in that situation, a 150 ton nudge could cause serious damage.

Absolutely loving the videos, especially the walk arounds of some of the most beautiful yachts on the planet.
There is one thing that I would like to question, in the video of the 35m submarine you said, and I’m sorry if I don’t quote accurately, that even with a lottery win there is no way we mortals could afford to but a superyacht.
Ok the current jackpot is €230,000,000
    Boat purchase €60,000,000
    Annual running costs €6,000,000 (10%)
So therefore over a 10 year period total costs
    €120,000,000
Balance left €110,000,000 (not including interest, return on investments, etc)
Obviously if you win less than say €120,000,000 a superyacht is out of the question but a super win (fingers crossed) it would be possible, and to be honest in my case very probable 😂😂
    Keep up the excellent work

If we are just dreaming....and let's be for real, most of us are...I would love this to be an explorer type sub with livable cabins and perhaps fold out solar panels on top that could recharge the batteries during the day, while you lounged around on a built in sun deck and chilled out, perhaps with jet skis.
And you killed my dreams about winning the lottery and not buying a Yacht...it is my one dream(

A 35M sub with a Michelin star restaurant and a casino. Great for weddings. SOME of these things are incongruous. The price for just the sub ride alone would probably be astronomical. Then food from a Michelin star restaurant on top of that. I don't imagine they stay underwater more than 6-8 hours at most. So the cost for such a trip when broken down by hour.. probably would be expensive.Or if it's a casino, they won't want you to leave. Either way, I don't see this as being the next entertainment venue. Short ridea with a casino and maybe a regular restaurant pumping out standard fare and you got something. Casinos make money.. Right now, they just got their heads in the clouds, or under water.

Slow down, David, I can't keep up !
First, I lost a fortune on those NFT's that you talked about (who knew the market for bits of imaginary nothing could tank so quickly ?), then I sunk everything I had left into a time-share yacht from that angry chap you had on twice recently, but I can't find anyone to sell it to so I can afford this latest boondoggle. A "luxury" submarine for hundreds of party-goers eating Michelin-star restaurant food cooked in a totally flame-free, sealed environment ! At 3 knots, those beautiful coral reefs and colourful fish had better be really close to the airport / freeway / hotel / harbour and solar-power station or people might not appreciate being sealed up with that many strangers with nothing to look at or do except drink themselves fighty !
Everything on a yacht might be better - the same cannot be said of an airplane or similar sealed metal tube suspended in an adverse pressure environment too cold and hostile to support human life. All the joys of Spirit Airlines, without actually getting anywhere, for many times the cost and a higher risk of violent death !
It's a good thing that I didn't also buy one of those million-dollar plastic boats being sold by that car-saleman-type guy from your parent company (I was so tempted by the line: don't stop and think about it or get independent advice, just buy right now - you're like family !) or I would really be in financial trouble...
Seriously, you do really good yacht tours (the best on UA-cam ?), and your insights into the super-yachting world can be interesting. Please stop shilling for the latest shiny object being dangled in front of you and stick to what you are good at, for which you are appreciated, and over which you can retain your credibility. If you are Coca-Cola, you don't need Dasani.

What percentage of your assets is a "safe" amount when purchasing a yacht if you intend to spend, let's say, 10% of a year on your yacht. This is assuming your remaining assets are invested with a conservative 8% growth annually. (ie: won $600m after taxes, debts paid off, house bought, etc. $600m to buy/maintain yacht and invest the rest)

I do find the newest tech trends fascinating. However, I wonder what it would be like to build a mega yacht styled after the liners of the early 1900s. Imagine a yacht that has luxury of the old floating palaces, where you experiment and mix-and-match decor styles. You could use the overall size of a liner for some really exciting spaces since the goal is no longer to carry masses of people. All the tech of tomorrow, hidden behind the veneers of yesterday.

Well, in the US, the current MegaMillions lottery is up to $420M. With a single payment takeaway after taxes of about $240M. How about I spend $50M on the Yacht and invest the rest to cover maintenance, fees, crew, provisions, fuel and the rest? Would that work?

Would make the perfect home for a couple. Line the outer hull with flexible solar so you could surface for a few hours or days and recharge the batteries. Peace and quite. No storms to worry about. No snow to shovel. No lawns to mow. Surface near an uninhabited Bahama island and camp for a few days. Think I would recover some of my money by locating and recovering downed ships and equipment like in the Alaskan crab fishing areas.

There is very good reason why submarines don't have windows.
because you can't see too far under the sea, except for very few area with very clear water.
same reason why pleasure boats don't have glass bottom to let people see under the boat.

Like everybody else, I think submarines are an awesome way to traverse the oceans, but they are very expensive and complex. I think a billionaire would quickly find out what a money pit a submarine is. Take a super yacht and its systems and double it for a submarine. I can't wait to see it through.

Don't understand why anyone would buy one, especially if they're only going to be on it 2-4 weeks a year ( which I would wager is true of most superyacht owners). It makes so much more sense to just charter one for a couple of weeks. No maintenance worries, no crew to be the employer of, and a different experience because it can be an entirely different boat each time. All the benefits and more at a fraction of the cost.
