Hi, until I can get an air filter I am using the ventilation hood over my stove when I solder. Thanks for all your videos. I love your teaching style and you seem like a very sweet person. Namaste. 💛
thank you so much! i understand so much better! if i solder a jumping, how long should i leave it for inside my crockpot filled with the pickle juice please?
How long you leave a soldered piece in the pickle pot depends on the strength of the fluid, how dirty the piece is and the temperature of the solution. If the items still looks dirty after brass brushing, leave it in a little longer. 😀
Hello I'm interested in starting soldering jewelry myself but I have so many questions. There are two different things I've seen people use on UA-cam, butane torch and "iron tool" (I think that's what it's called). What are the differences? I noticed with the butane torch "flux" is not used? I'd like to connect rhinestones/pendants to make a statement necklace or add a jump ring etc... Do I have to buy both tools iron and torch to connect either or?! Thank you!
Hi! If you want to work with gold, silver, copper, or nickel, then you need to follow the advice in my video. But, it sounds like you are working with white metal castings from a bead store. If that's the case, the techniques demonstrated on my channel won't work for you. You can view the entire OJA playlist at www.onlinejewelryacademy.com Good luck with your projects. Thanks for your support! : )
Quick question im trying to make a silver necklace and I was wondering is hard solder the best choice.? Will the solder joints hold together when i bend n shape the necklace.? Thanks for your help your videos are extremely helpful.
Here's a video you should watch: ua-cam.com/video/jjzo7XWC9KU/v-deo.html Be sure to check out the OJA's other videos on soldering for more details. You can quickly find them on our website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com. The videos are organized by category. Be aware of the solder joint while you shape the links of the necklace. If you need to put lots of stress on the solder joint, you could always cut the jump rings from the coil at a dramatic angle. You might also want to watch this video on Loop-In-Loop chain making: ua-cam.com/video/j0acVw5BPjU/v-deo.html. Have fun! : )
Hi Grace, There are only a couple of different types of flux that are commonly used. The white paste flux will work with silver, copper, brass, and even steel. There is a different type of flux that is specifically used for gold. You can learn more about flux by looking at the descriptions on most jewelry supply company websites. If you still have questions, feel free to send me a question through the OJA website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com Thanks for your support! : )
Pickle cleans oxidation off of metal that has been exposed to high temperatures much faster if the pickle is warm. Just leave the pickle pot (crock pot) on a low temperature while your work. Thanks for your support! : )
So I've had some difficulties getting solder to flow, even with my torch focused on the area--perhaps others can relate? I just discovered that if my micro-torch is low in fuel, it just won't get hot enough to even cause easy solder to flow. Letting it cool down and re-fueling has solve many problems today. :)
Yes, I've just bought a larger torch which puts out a lot more heat, so it will be a learning process to determine which soldering job needs it. The micro torch, similar to the one pictured in your video, is great for soldering wire and other small tasks.
Hello, I've been having this same issue. May I ask you when you upgraded to a bigger touch what type you went with? I'm wanting to get the little smith torch. But at the moment it's a little bit pricey, so that's something I may have to put aside for to get a little bit later. Thanks in advance!
Hey huskyfluffy, Brass brushing is primarily used to remove oxidation not removed by the pickle pot. It simultaneously burnishes the surface of the object while it ever so slightly work hardens its surface. You should always strive to work with clean metal. It protects your tools and prevents you from making mistakes. You should pickle, brass brush, rinse and dry every piece after you apply heat to the metal. I highly recommend that you review the soldering and pickling videos using the OJA's website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com The videos are conveniently organized by topic on the website. Your comments have inspired me to make a video on flux and to create a pickling playlist on the OJA's channel. Thanks for your support! : )
I got some pickle mix I was recommended by the place I was getting my metals from, and as I was putting it in the crockpot it says not for use on sterling silver! So I read the ingredients!! Mainly sodium bisulfate, listed first and next was potassium bi chromate .... so what can I do now, that is what I am working with.!!! The store I purchased from knew I was buying sterling !!!!! I talked with them about everything, I picked up borax powder, and handy flux liquid just in case I didn’t like one or the other!!! I have worked stained glass and know the function of it, have use paste flux for years!!! The pickle thing is new to me !! So what can I do about my sterling silver issue I’d like to get started!! But my pickle solution says I can’t!!!!! 🤔😠
I generally use Ph down from the spa section at Home Depot for my pickle. It's 93.2% Sodium Bisulfate. But you could use citric acid or vinegar to pickle your soldering projects. I hope this information helps. : )

What kind of feet do you use on your kiln tile to ensure they won’t also get too hot?
The kiln shelf doesn’t conduct heat very well. So, I just use “rubber” stick on feet. 😀

hi i have a question, can that yellow propane torch melt a wired stainless steel? the same as you did in that scene?
No. The MAPP gas torch doesn’t get hot enough to do that. 😀

I know you said the pickle solution is best in a croc pot...doles that meanthe pot should be warm and remain on for as long as u have that pickling?

Great problem solving Kurt. Perhaps it's time for you to consider a torch upgrade? Maybe one with a larger fuel supply?

Can you explain why to brass brush? Why? If doing multiple solders, I don't need to right?
