Well done on the capture/rescue! You should include a small self-inflatable raft and a hand-paddle to the rescue inventory, for any future rescues like this! The capture of the mother was very rough. You could tell by the way she was captured in that net and knocked around. I can only imagine the additional pain that caused. But even worse was when she was manhandled pulling her out of the net. They clearly cut the film as it appeared he was grabbing her by the wings. This is how chickens are grabbed when they’re being taken out of transport crates after arriving at the slaughterhouse. Imagine having your arms behind your back and somebody lifting you up by your arms. It causes dislocation, broken bones, tears and bruises. Why? Because slaughterhouse workers can get away with it. Poultry have zero rights and zero protection under the laws. So as long as people continue to crave chicken flesh on their plates, The torture will continue.

Bird netting is really a bad idea. I used it once to protect my vegetables and it caught all kinds of wildlife: birds, butterflies, dragonflies, you name it. Every time one of nature's lovely animals can no longer survive I feel that I have aged 20 years ... I am by my count now way over 20,000 years and the pain and loss do not get any easier to take.

All the way in Alaska but a huge fan. So much hard work and dedication at every rescue. Wow. Always in awe and learn so much....like....NETTING IS BAD!!!!
I can guess it's for several reasons. Just before our son was born, we bought a similar Volvo wagon to be our main family vehicle. At the time, it had the highest safety ratings, and had the bonus of being comfy for long-distance family trips, able to haul a lot of stuff. When we got our dog as a puppy, the hatchback became the dog crate for transport; when we added a second dog and crate, both crates fit in the hatch, and the Volvo was my dog training and showing vehicle, as well as being the karate and soccer practice transport. When we decided on a new vehicle, friends of ours happily bought our old Volvo for their soon to be family transport. Last we heard from our friends, their 8 year old still loves riding in the back seat with their dogs, and the 20 year old Volvo wagon is still running like a champ. THAT'S why so many Volvos - very safe, very dependable, very capable, and very capacious (a dog trainer carries around almost as much equipment for the job, as we see Simon and Lawrie pull out of their Volvo for every rescue).
We try to film as many rescues as we can, however, we cover the hole of Surrey and sometimes even a little further, so it's hard for us to get to every single one. We do have a fantastic team of rescue volunteers who help us cover all our bases. :)
They should have used bright neon colored netting to keep animals out of fish farm. Because nothing like bright colors to say BACK OFF I'M DEADLY or I'M RIGHT HERE to most animals.
Some animals are colorblind, and some animals actually have a food source that is colorful. There are brightly colored fish and flowers that are perfectly safe for animals to eat. Some animals are even MORE attracted to shiny and bright things, for both logical and illogical reasons. Some animals collect shiny things just for fun. The best resolution would have been one with no netting at all. There are other ways to protect things.
@@sunburstisland2560 birds usually aren't though. They're literally designed to see colors that we can't. Personally, I wouldn't value the fish over wildlife.
@@NoirRaven yes, I know, the colorblind comment was directed specifically towards a majority of birds. plenty of other animals could also attempt to eat the fish and become tangled in netting. as I said a non netting option would be best. there are many methods for protecting fish if you wish to do so.
Thx for trying your best WAF, at least the ducklings will grow up fine. I still have to ask: What is it with nettings and england? Almost every video is about an animal trapped in some netting. How is it that people overthere can still walk and don't live in fear to be caught and get paralyzed / choked by some netting across a street or a walkway?
Have to say this is the first video of yours in a really long time that I just had to skip through (the last I think was that poor deer that Simon had to deal with by the roadside) but there’s no doubt you had to do what was best and the ducklings and mother would have died if you had done nothing. So while the mum had to be euthanised , you’ve still saved her ducklings. Well done
What was the point of having all that stupid netting around there anyway?!? It should be ripped down to prevent anything like this from happening again! Thank you, Simon and Jamie, for your patience and kindness in all these rescues. 🙏💟
Do you think the mother duck shattered her pelvis when she hit the net? While she struugled to get out of the net? Or that she was hit elsewhere and then fell into the net?
@@sherrygorse9568 Your noisy dog comment made me smile, I think it's a good idea, but my childish brain instantly pictured a super loud and spazy dog running about madly chasing birds 🤭
@@wildlifeaid okay, thank you. I've seen that on a smaller ornamental pond where the fish can't get into deeper water away from the herons but not on such a large pond. I would think such a large area of netting would be an expense and a bother to set up and manage. It also creates problems like with the duck family. How might mom have been injured ? She wouldn't have done it crash landing since the babies can't fly and the net would cushion her. She couldn't have walked out there because she was paralyzed....so how?
@Sid Williams I highly doubt the net had anything to do with her pelvis getting broken, that would take a lot more force than falling into a net or getting tangled in it
it's not illegal netting, nor is the setup itself below code they want the predatory birds out of their pond where they've been keeping their chosen fish, so they put up permitted netting to keep the birds out maybe they had a better protection setup planned for down the line that'd cause a bit less clueless bird death, but that hardly matters at this moment
What could have caused the shattered pelvis? Any clues? It’s sad when kindness is to put them out of their misery. At least the little ones still have a chance now.

Every time one of nature's lovely animals can no longer survive I feel that I have aged 20 years ... I am by my count now way over 20,000 years and the pain and loss do not get any easier to take.
Heartbreaking to see her go! 😢
Good job with the rescue and catching all those ducklings! It's very sad about the mother duck though. What was that netting for anyway?
Why is this "pond netting" even there? Why would you not want wild life in your pond? It's a death trap for wild life. So sad. Stupid people. Thank you WildlifeAid for doing what you can! Love you guys!
All the way in Alaska but a huge fan. So much hard work and dedication at every rescue. Wow. Always in awe and learn so much....like....NETTING IS BAD!!!!
Amazing rescue I also have a question why so many volvos haha
Haha, Simon loves Volvo's :)
The owners also to be fined for making such obstructions to those birds, actual owners of the land. Why all such things required for a simple living?
I wonder how large the fraction of filmed rescues to unfilmed rescues is.
We try to film as many rescues as we can, however, we cover the hole of Surrey and sometimes even a little further, so it's hard for us to get to every single one. We do have a fantastic team of rescue volunteers who help us cover all our bases. :)
@@wildlifeaid that's interesting. I was under the impression you'd only film some rescues few and far between.
@@wildlifeaid Wait, there's a hole in Surrey? How big is it? 😁
@@Korina42 It might be on Google Maps Street View what with being "The" hole of Surrey.
Can't quite put my finger on why but I got a bit of a Crystal Maze feeling from some of this video.
I was thinking of Krypton Factor
Why would you put netting on a pond?
The netting is used to protect the fish inside
Because of herons, some people spend a lot of money on there fish for there ponds. Herons are smart once they find an easy meal they’ll be back
@SpyingDutchman Or they have fish. Fish deserve to live too.
Are these fancy fish, like koi? Or are they game fish? There must be a better way. Maybe a noisy dog that likes to chase herons?
@@sherrygorse9568 Your noisy dog comment made me smile, I think it's a good idea, but my childish brain instantly pictured a super loud and spazy dog running about madly chasing birds 🤭
Amazing work but my god was that stressful to watch 😂
poor mother duck. may she watch over her ducklings
What is pond netting used for on such a large pond? Is it to keep something in or something out.? I was just curious. Ty
probably to keep predators out... i guess they breed fish or something else in this pond.
The netting is used to keep the herons out and protect their fish
@@wildlifeaid okay, thank you.
I've seen that on a smaller ornamental pond where the fish can't get into deeper water away from the herons but not on such a large pond. I would think such a large area of netting would be an expense and a bother to set up and manage.
It also creates problems like with the duck family.
How might mom have been injured ? She wouldn't have done it crash landing since the babies can't fly and the net would cushion her.
She couldn't have walked out there because she was paralyzed....so how?
@Sid Williams I highly doubt the net had anything to do with her pelvis getting broken, that would take a lot more force than falling into a net or getting tangled in it
What a horrible structure. What on earth is it? Lots of wildlife must get tangled in that awful netting. Poor mother duck.
Poor Mum! 😢
Very sad for mum...wish she could live for her babies 😭
Injuries like that probably wouldn't happen as often if people stopped putting barriers and obstacles around water sources... 😓😓😓
👍👍응원합니다 👍👍🇰🇷
Whoever placed that net authority or otherwise should be charged with cruelty to animals.
seriously? I don't think it is illegal.
Why would they even need to be charged they're just keeping other animals out of their enclosure that's already inhabited
It had been dropped probably by a bird of prey which probably did the damage
it's not illegal netting, nor is the setup itself below code
they want the predatory birds out of their pond where they've been keeping their chosen fish, so they put up permitted netting to keep the birds out
maybe they had a better protection setup planned for down the line that'd cause a bit less clueless bird death, but that hardly matters at this moment
What could have caused the shattered pelvis? Any clues? It’s sad when kindness is to put them out of their misery. At least the little ones still have a chance now.
We can't be sure of how she sustained her injuries, as the family found her unable to move on top of the netting. She wasn't trapped in it so we would assume that she may have been attached by something beforehand and managed to escape. Sadly, as she was unable to use her legs, she couldn't get off the top of the netting.
So sad... what caused the mom’s injuries?

You guys are terrific! Horrid netting, though. It's what killed the mother duck, isn't it?
Thanks so much!
It does seem likely, yes :(
I hope they will be fine 🦆😭
