Kalamata is a city in southwestern Peloponnese, capital of the prefecture of Messinia and port in southern mainland Greece.
From the port of Kalamata you can travel to Kythera and Crete during the summer months .
History of the port In the mid 19th century, Kalamata had turned into a seaside urban center with significant commercial activity. The city enjoyed great commercial development because of trade craft and agricultural products of the Messinian land. The main export product until the First World War was silk. Kalamata was the largest silk production center and the famous and award-winning scarves circulated everywhere. Great contribution to the development of the city was the construction of the city's port, the roads, railway lines and lighting.
Η Καλαμάτα είναι πόλη της νοτιοδυτικής Πελοποννήσου, πρωτεύουσα του νομού Μεσσηνίας και λιμάνι της νότιας ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας.Από το λιμάνι της Καλαμάτας μπορεί να ταξιδέψει κάνεις κατά τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες σε Κύθηρα και Κρήτη .
Ιστορία του λιμανιού.
Στα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα η Καλαμάτα είχε μετατραπεί σε παραθαλάσσιο αστικό κέντρο με σημαντική εμπορική δραστηριότητα. Η πόλη γνώρισε μεγάλη εμπορική ανάπτυξη λόγω του εμπορίου βιοτεχνικών και αγροτικών προϊόντων της μεσσηνιακής γης. Το βασικό εξαγόμενο προϊόν μέχρι τον Α' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο ήταν το μετάξι. Η Καλαμάτα ήταν το μεγαλύτερο κέντρο παραγωγής μεταξιού και τα φημισμένα και βραβευμένα της μαντίλια κυκλοφορούσαν παντού. Μεγάλη προσφορά στην ανάπτυξη της πόλης είχε και η κατασκευή του λιμανιού της πόλης, των οδικών αξόνων, των σιδηροδρομικών γραμμών και του ηλεκτροφωτισμού.
