I have a friend who is named Lisa she’s a Cardiac Echosonographer that I have known for a long time When I went to my local outpatient clinic one time she said that would you like me to use pink Nitrile gloves I said yes because you know why? Because the size of her hands (small) to this day if I see her again I always request her to put on size small because I like the fact that the size small fits her hands and I like the way that the size small gloves whether it’s latex or nitrile feels on my skin when she rubs my skin and the right size gloves make me feel better during a procedure Remember the right size of gloves equals a very happy patient

I work in medical quality control for one of the manufacturers you listed in your video.
This past year the FDA deemed gloves containing powder were posing a greater threat to the patient over the comfort provided to the user. Gloves containing powder are still manufactured, but are no longer legal to sell in the US.

I'm starting the ST program this fall. I hear a lot that this position is not liked because it is the "bottom of the totem pole" in the OR and it's hard to get the rest of the team to respect you. What is your opinion?

    • @SurgicalTechTips
      @SurgicalTechTips  7 років тому +2

I have heard of hospitals that have people with that demeanor, but haven't experienced it at all. In fact my experiences in the OR over the past 8-9 years had been the exact opposite. I've had the pleasure of working with some amazing nurses, doctors, SPD, and EVS folks, and I can honestly say that if you are in a working situation that is filled with no support, and constant belittlement, you need to move on to a different hospital or surgery center. No one deserves that type of treatment.

I do not like Biogel, doesn't matter if single Biogel gloves or
indicator gloves. I have a latex allergy and my favorite combination
when having to use indicator gloves is Gammex latex free underglove and
normal Semper gloves on top. Biogel makes my fingers feel so stiff that
    it is uncomfortable.

I've also been trying to just steer clear of using latex gloves. At my hospital all of our latex free gloves are Sensicare which I don't really like. We only have a couple boxes of the latex free blue Biogels which I've tried and loved. Been trying to get our supervisor to order more! lol Love this channel though man, it's great getting these tips as I move from SNA to CST

powdered gloves are actually dangerous for severe allergic reactions, allergies, developing allergies, respiratory issues, inflammation to wounds, sensitivity and contamination. Mainly all due to allergies and to minimize the risk of allergies but also for non allergic people the powder can cause problems to open cuts, wounds and irritation. Being safe and minimizing risks.

The first comment I would do is that when talking about the double gloving.
I see many professionnal acting like you do BUT I would like to raise the point that if heavy equipment you use for Orthopaedic surgery might increase the risk of holes in the gloves, I would rather say that it increase the possibility to tear the glove.
Tactile surgery have also high risk of creating holes specifically due the the needles that you are using.

I have a few pairs of the under gloves and use them when I polish my collection of cowboy boots. I made the mistake of using my bare hands, and I had black palms for 5 days.

For a housekeeper working on a ward (I work outside states with NHS) the video was useful in detailing types of surgical gloves given I had a number of those, some same company just popping up onto my store area with no idea where to put them, and bizzarely as well some staff on the ward didn't know what they were, except that "someone from theater must have brought them over." to quote one. Thanks for the insight.

Very nice videos thank you for posting.
In Stockholm, Sweden at the Karolinska University Hospital we mostly use the Biogel brand and the Gammex brand.
Double gloving is recommend by the hospital policy however staff member can on their own discretion (and risk) choose to use only one pair of gloves.
So far I prefer the Biogel brand.

When you talk about Latex free gloves you mainly talk about the fit and feel which is definitely important but you forget 2 things.
The first one, between all the product you talk about their might be differences in terms of material.
The "old" neoprene is still existing but tends to be replace by PI (Poly Isoprene) which is much more NRL (natural rubber latex) properties.
The second thing you talk is the compounding of the gloves.
You mention at the beginning of the video, some Synthetic gloves develop allergies. Why ?
Because in order to produce a PI glove 99% of the producers will have to use accelerators.
    Those chemicals might create reactions.
And one of the good gloves you mention is great in term of fit and feel but is terrible in terms of skin reaction development.
A big Belgium hospital that has switched to this gloves has experienced it, they have now more than 30 people from their staff who developed reactions.

+Abe Coulter I would contact the companies by email directly to see if they are able to send some samples to you. BIOGEL, MEDLINE, CARDINAL HEALTH, and ANSELL are all popular glove companies used in the OR.

Interesting thought, I know AORN tried to BAN scrub caps earlier this year stating the were ineffective at keeping hair out. There was a BIG back lash from the national Surgeons organization though, so they are still around lol. Honestly I think its just a comfort thing.
