Just imagine if the Nat Turner revolt or other slave uprisings had gained numbers similar to those of Sparticus' army in the Third Servile War. If 75 slave rebels was enough to make so many people panic, how traumatizing would 120,000 have been?

To be fair, many believed it was going to die out on its own, which it was leaning towards at the time the decision was made. But with the invention of the cotton gin, it made slave plantations profitable. A little ironic that some people assumed technology would remove the need for slaves, but it only made it more profitable in that case.

Yeah it's a complex issue though. They felt that if they pushed to end slavery, the southern colonies would not support the rebellion, which would result in British victory.

Whites tortured/killed/sold blacks of all ages with impunity. He knew what those "innocent" babies would grow up to become and do to him/his family/his babies....don't you think that affected his own moral compass when he made his decisions?
It's hard to judge him without walking a mile in his shoes.

Gold Wolf I didn't know what to think of Nat Turner for a while. At first, I viewed him as a hero who tried to free his people from oppression. Even if it meant killing(which I'm highly against), but it was a different time then and we have progressed though there still is racism in America and the world, what's new? Then I discovered they also killed children and babies which I'm fondly not a fan of, but then again what human being isn't. However, I remember many great American and other global leaders in the past have done some fucked up shit. So my view of Nat Turner still stands as a hero. Nowadays, what we need is not more killings however, but love, understanding and patience. Treat each other as how we want to be treated. Laugh a little, not take everything so seriously. Live your life!

If you entered the house of an SS Nazi and killed him, then you saw a baby lying in a crib, would you kill the baby and throw it in the fire? If your answer is yes, there's something wrong with you, plain and simple. Saying, "The baby would have grown up to be a slaveowner so it's okay to kill it," is the exact same logic used by racists in saying, "Black children will grow up to be criminals so it's okay to try them as adults and put them away for life."

Ok I’ve seen a lot of fighting on this and I’d like to give my two cents. I won’t call Nat Turner a “hero” because he did murder babies, but I will not condemn him. In his situation all he had known was violence and cruelty. He was human and when you’re only exposed only to that kind of treatment you either just get used to it or you break in some way shape or form. Nat Turner broke and the only way out of the abusive hell that is slavery was to fight back. And then if you think about it what Nat did was NOTHING compared to what the hundreds of years of slavery did. This is going to sound bad but a couple white future slaveholding kids dying is less than what is deserved for the thousands of kids forced to wilt away and lose their potential by being enslaved. I don’t want a race war and I don’t think all whites should die but I do think that people who believe that are so far off the moral line. Being (what I like to think) a good person murder is bad always but being a fair person eye for an eye yk. So overall I think everyone is really lucky that most slaves only wanted freedom and not revenge

That is part of the lie you were told. If he had gotten to Jerusalem, it would have grown more than just the 300. There were 300 total armed men. half on horseback, half on foot.. 2 commanders.. Hark "Hercules" Moore was the violent one that led half of the group. Henry Nat Turner was the commander that ordered his group to spare poor whites. NILES WEEKLY REGISTER - Fourth Series, Volume IV and Volume XI. BALTIMORE - August 27th, 1831. Titled- THE PAST - THE PRESENT - FOR THE FUTURE. Page 455 right column and page 456 left column, middle paragraph. Proof that the group was larger, but you have to read in extensive detail. Several correspondence, express arriving from Suffolk, from Virginia during 1831 confirm that 300 MEN were indeed the majority of the army, stating the army was headed towards South Quay, presumed trying to reach the Dismal swamp. it even says they repelled the first militia confrontation. Although, the militia blames their retreat on their guns having wet powder due to the rain. Keep reading that article I cited and you will see that even some of the poor Irish were riding with them to do battle over land. Read the part where eyewitness accounts state there were one or two white men involved in the insurrection. So much more to this that people just don't know due to the lies history has spun. Turner's connections with Nottoway Indians, poor whites who were also pissed off about seizing of lands is something that has been hidden by calling Turner just a murderous psycho out for baby blood. Lies. It was a coordinated insurrection that was growing. He was a hero. Only uninformed sheep who believe lies would think otherwise.

Those were no heroes. I doubt I would have said anything if it weren't for that. There's no way you can justify that and it proves where the hearts of these people were. It was just about HATE. If someone enslaved me, I'd have hated them too, but not like this. You have to admit it was pretty cowardly to fall upon sleeping people at 2:00a.m. as well. If they had gotten together and found a place of refuge for themselves, I could have respected that, but what they did instead was demonic. It was also stupid, because they only made things harder for other slaves and there was no way they could have won anyways, so it was for nothing. Aside from the baby, it was the hate in the comments that really bothered me. I had no idea that black people still hate white people so much. Every one of them reveled in black people killing white people. They just "loved" it and couldn't praise the murderers enough. It wasn't just about long ago slavery. They are overflowing with hate for white people right "now." The slave-owners and the slaves have been dead for generations. If Nat Turner's Rebellion is juxtaposed to the American Revolution, Turner's was an act of self defense that was, in every conceivable way, more justified than the "American Revolution" in which many were killed over raising taxes. Killing motivated by escaping near genocide, or killing motivated by taxes imposed on rich landowners, which of these is murder, really?

Gray submitted his own writings, swore he got them from Turner in jail and swore under oath it was a real "testimony". Gray lied under oath 3 times in court. The person who responded to you hypocritically wrote part of a testimony, but totally skipped over the testimony of Jarell Judkins who testified that Turner told the group to spare poor whites. The person who responded to you claimed Turner killed any and all whites and there was no proof otherwise..so did he not read the Judkins testimony or does he count on others not reading it? Henry "Nat" Turner did NOT kill or order the killing of poor whites, per the testimony of Jarell Judkins in court. No one on here can provide one ounce of proof otherwise that isn't dubious. There were 300 armed men, half on foot and half on horseback marching down the street. Most farms or plantations did not have many slaves. There were two commanders, Hark "Hercules" Moore, who was not opposed to killing any and all. The group of 300 men were not under Turner's command until the rendezvous point. They only caught 50 or 60. Everyone on here who claims he killed kids or murdered babies in the crib only rely on the garbage lies told by Thomas R. Gray in court. And I can prove that Gray lied under oath 3 times in court. Liars on here love portraying Henry Nat Turner as a baby murderer, instead of addressing real facts with hard evidence. I challenge anyone on here to find one ounce of proof that Henry Nat Turner killed babies. Only sources are the garbage lies of Thomas R. Gray who lied under oath 3 times in court.

I believe their actions were justified. Though some things were extremely controversial, they did what they had to do in the environment that was presented to them.
    - Was killing the Slave owners 7 year old son justified?
Perhaps not. Though these claims sound a propagandistic, I will continue. The alternative is the child waking up to a blood showered home. the town he grew in probably a similar picture. No one to take care of the child and if any food was present it was eaten by the slaves and their own children who were just being starved and over worked.
Was it wrong the kill the infant and burn them? Again, this sounds like some hardcore fear mongering. But again we must look at the alternative.
The infant is left alone with no parents, no siblings to take it to help. Left for days screaming in a house with soon to be rotting corpses. How long would this go on? Even if someone where to stumble upon the home and find the infant, who’s to say what intentions this individual has? Think about the time period this is in.
Viewing the rebellion of Nat Turner and through this lens, could we say that he was in some kind of way a hero? And in any case when someone is a hero there will always be someone who finds them to be the villain.
I find Nat Turners actions admirable considering the conditions presented to him.

honestly speaking from human nature and my gut. something tells me something beyound wicked happened, for them to kill the child and collectively say "kill em all', 1,
    2. to say they were tortured was an understatment. and to know the things they went through after being caught were unthinkable but knowing WHEN you were caught what was gonna happen and STILL be so ready, willing and undeterred tells me from my soul to my gut. THE REASON, of why went beyond slavery but FOR someone else and for what was done to thus person. NO one committes an act of such and have EVERYONE or talk a large percentage into to being apart of it for self fulfilling reasons. people stand firm on the religon side of things they over think and miss the personal side. i dont think those that did what they did, with the hopes or intentions of being free, or living. i feel they did all they could knowing they will die...And that gives you an entirely different mindset

Nat Turner was a hero who did all things necessary to secure his freedom and carry out his mandate from God. I don't understand people rationalizing why Nat would kill a slave owner but should spare a slave inheritor. The instant a slave owner dies all enslaved people are transferred to a new owner whether is be the wife or the soon to be baby owner. You can't walk free until every person who could own you is dead. Even then, the state will take possession of you and have you sold for tax revenue if no one claims the estate. I think the sympathizers for the slave system simply don't have an in depth understanding of the slave system. Hell, being a free black person still meant you could be subject for enslavement as long as you are following the black laws or avoid getting kidnapped. Just annoys me so much people are so dense, what do they teach in school these days?

I'll say Nat was a hero for his cause. He was being harshly mistreated so he stood up and did what he could to change the situation. However, his actions left more of his own dead than of the oppressors. The laws became more harsh, not less, and the anti-black sentiment only worsened. The best thing that came of his rebellion is more politicians pushing for emancipation or deportation back to Africa. At that time, both were excellent ideas.

See this is the part you people can't seem to understand.
In their eyes as slaves NO ONE was innocent. All they'd known their entire life was the torture, rape murder and dehumanization of their people.
And the "innocents" went on about their day as if it were all okay. They never questioned why another human being was chained and beaten for having a darker complexion or why a woman's newborn was used as gator bait or why they had daily lynching events as if it were some kind of circus act. The death's of women and infants was the norm to them and guess who's at fault for that?
All they cared about was how much of the benefits they could real from the victims of their people's evil and treachery.
My ancestors reacted with what they were taught and shown their entire lives. Brutality, that might made right.
Like honestly what kind of reaction do you possibly think would have been brought forth after all my people had been through for generations at that time?
Did you expect them to march and protest for freedom as if it were already the 60s and as if the civil rights movement were a thing? Did you expect them to rally the so called innocent's and future slave masters who didn't give a FUCK about them and their rights as a human beings?
Sometimes the amount of logical disconnect and willful ignorance you people display is extraordinary.

In the Commonwealth of Virginia 1831, Nottoway living on communal reservation land were not subject to taxes, or to “registration” as were other free people of color. Taxation of “free coloreds” was not primarily for the purpose of revenue generation, it was a means of control. Free coloreds who did not register, and pay their “free tax” were subject to being placed in involuntary servitude with anyone the sheriff or tax collector assigned them to…It was a means of government sanctioned enslavement. Henry "Nat" Turner was a half-indian negro, married to a member of the Nottoway tribe (Cherry Turner) with 3 children lawfully entitled to land due to matrilineal laws of Virginia in 1831, but forced into involuntary servitude due to restrictive tax laws against people of color. The insurrection was about rights to his family’s land and the rampant thefts of land by Europeans. Those lands were never returned. The insurrection is a ramification of this forgotten part of history. So, forgetting is par for course.
