By the time MSD took over captaincy in 2007, many of the mighty Aussie players retired. India played a minnow Aussie team at home in 2011 where lord dhoni scored only 7 runs! Had MSD faced those 2003 world cup opponents, he would've taken retirement in the middle of the world cup itself, like how he retired from test cricket, that's how strong all teams were in that era.
