- Classic Harry Lauder (1870-1950) Scottish music hall, first recorded in 1903 as a 10" disc, but this 12" version was recorded by G&T (later HMV) in May 1907, Cat. No. 02089 (later D 402) It is just possible to hear a muffled voice at the start, possibly the recording engineer giving a cue to start. In my opinion these Lauder's earlier records are his best, maybe he tired of singing the same old songs, or his voice was less suited to electrical recording. For those viewers who have difficulty with Scottish pronunciation the full lyrics are available on the 'net. Harry Lauder later earned a knighthood fundraising for First World War charities.
Hi Paul Harry Lauder has a great voice have this up our tv love your Gramophone fantastic sound out it I like them loud you got great views well done .Troupee.
Strange, I don't get this large number of views now. This was posted several years ago. I inherited the gramophone from my elderly neighbours in the mid 1960's. They bought it new around 1913. Its a rare 'Marathon' machine, designed to play Marathon discs, which due to their narrow grooves & 'hill&dale' soundwaves, play up to 50% longer than conventional 78's. The soundbox can swivel, enabling it to play conventional discs too. Glad you enjoyed my posting of You've Got To Laugh' Your comment didn't post to UA-cam, but I did receive it as an email notification.
Oh my!!!!! yet another unforgettable version of this very whimsical piece!!!!! Thank You Paul!!!!!!
Its a pleasure. Glad you enjoyed!
Love your uploads all these great old discs.
These are amazing Paul, and I love your arm sneaking to put the needle on the record!
+Arthur Garry King Thanks Arthur! The arm does not appear in later uploads, I now use 'Movie Maker' to edit my videos & usually start each one with a view of the record, sometimes in a cover with advertising for long gone gramophone & record stores.
+Paul Harrison I actually like the arm creeping in, adds a nice Addams Family touch!
+Arthur Garry King I'm an Addams Family fan too, never thought of it that way, thanks for the humour!
I've got that one also, he recorded it several times over the years. Have not uploaded it yet, but an early recording of 'I Love A Lassie' is on my channel, a good lively record & classic Harry Lauder.
Greatest song ever!
Glad you emjoyed. Think this was recorded c.1910 & to my mind these early Harry Lauder records are among the best. I also uploaded an early 'I Love A Lassie', 'Roaming In The Gloaming' & 'A wee Deoch & Doris' Moving on to the 1920's I also have 'Road to the Isles' & Keep Right On To The End Of The Road' Thanks for viewing.
thanks for comment, glad you enjoyed.
Why do I remember this? Hmmm...2019!
Wow wow this is a very funny and cheerful song !!!! It is hard not to laugh!!!!!!!!
Was lucky to find this at a record auction many years ago. Now, more than ever, its a pleasure to share something laughable! Reminds me of the Scottish entertainment every New Year's Eve on television. There was Andy Stewart, Kenneth McKellar & the White Heather Club Scottish Dancers. A night of Scottish songs & comedy like this was a wonderful way to see the New Year in.
I remember my mum singing this to me
Happy to bring back memories. If there are other old songs you'd like to hear please let me know, I may have them in my collection
