- In this video I am having some thoughts about switching camera systems and going from my DSLR to a mirrorless camera, Canon vs Fuji. I talk about my experience with the Canon 5D Mark III and I explain my top 5 reasons to switch to the Fuji X-T2 for my landscape photography. I share some of my experience with both cameras and give some insights into their advantages and disadvantages, illustrating my train of thought with some sample pictures.

Six months ago I acually upgraded from a Canon 760D/T6S (very noisy camera!) to the Fuji X-T2, not wanting to go FF because of the weight. I LOVE everything about this camera, the feel, the concept, how it feels in my hands, the image quality, the rather good handling of high ISO, dynamic range. I'm mainly doing landscape, street, cityscape and macro.
The only down side is the extremely small offer of third party lenses. No overall cheap solutions if you're on budget. I did order the 80 mm macro lens, and it's the most expensive macro lens on the market (I wanted IS & AF).
I didn't find it easy to use it at the start and needed some time to adapt, but now I'm just in love with my X-T2
Hi Christophe, Just like you, I've been using my 5D3 for almost 5 years. I also got into Fuji almost 3 years ago with the x-100t and before that with a cheaper Fuji. I actually love both camera systems (and lenses) but in different ways. I use the Fujis for street and travel and I use the Canons for more rugged use (travel in harsh conditions) but also sometimes for street and travel. My advice is the same that I give to everybody. No need to switch right away! Keep both systems for awhile if possible as they are different tools. Choose the tool that you want for each situation at the time. Bottom line, I like the Fujis for their light weight, compactness and fun factor. I like the Canon and L glass for great image results and also durability. Nothing wrong with using two systems or more if you can afford to as both are great for what they do. FYI, sometimes I just push myself to get a great image with only my i-phone...
Hey John. I completely agree with your point about using the right tool for the right job. I still have my 5D3, but the X-T2 pretty much does everything the Canon does, some of it even better in my opinion.
In the video I talk about my doubts about the weather resistance of the camera, but they have pretty much been put to rest after my recent trip to Iceland (I just uploaded a video where I stand under a waterfall with the X-T2). I still need to test it in colder conditions. Winter is coming, so I will probably talk about it in a future video. ;-)
With me, it is all about the lens. No matter what body, the Fuji XF lens are superb! I get very subtle details on the Fuji that I can't duplicate on any other camera.
One more reason is the really excellent Customer Service and the Firmware Updates, even to an camera, that is no longer produced.

Thankfully I did not yet have any problems with either camera from Canon or Fuji, so I can't speak about their Customer Service.
But yes, the upgrades of the firmware for the Fuji cameras is amazing. I already updated the XT2 twice since I had it, adding many new features. I believe I never updated my Canon 5D Mark III once during the 5 years I've been using it.
Well said. I was about to acquire a Canon 6D...and my camera guy pointed me towards this camera and I am blown away, coming from the world of the Nikon Nikkormat 35MM.
I sold all of my Canon and Leica systems and went to Fuji - It is soooooo much better now

I switched from Canon (6D) to FUji (Xt2), and I'm very happy :)
I'm faced with the decision to move from 6D to Fuji X-T2... I'm scared that I might be making a bad decision.
What kind of photos do you use to take?
I do a lot of Studio (Product photography, Fashion and portraiture) I also do a lil bit of wedding photography and events as well commercial work for Web design agencies... A lot of the work I do is in studio though and I focus more on lighting than the actual camera i use. I've been shooting on the Canon 60D & 6D (full frame) and occasionally renting the 5D for the bigger jobs. Now my mentor advised me to get the Fuji X-T2 Pro. I'm lil bit uneasy about the decision coz I don't know the brand... and no one around me uses it. Will I be able to trigger Canon?Yongnuo speedlights with it? and is it durable? Those questions come to mind... but i will go to a Fuji roadshow and see what the fuss is about... otherwise it really looks like a fun Camera
Oh! Then you will love the Xt2!!! And yes, you can keep working with you Yongnuo stuff (Indeed, I do too! :D )
I owned a 6d and i'm now using an xt2. I would say overall that if you dont need the benefit of a smaller body then stick with canon. Also there is a question mark over the longevity of these new mirrorless bodies. DSLR are tried and tested for many years. Mirrorless is still an infant in comparison, so imo if you are doing and delivering PROFESSIONAL WORK, stick with the full frame bodies. If you want a side camera for travelling and casual stuff the xt2 (heck even the xt1) is a good choice.
I just switched to Fuji (replacing a Rebel T6 and 5D MKII) with a X-T1 and X-Pro2 and every point made in this video is 100% accurate.
Thinking about jumping ship. My shutter button died on my 5D mkiii yesterday. That may have pushed me off the cliff. 35k shutter clicks. Sucks.
@@chenangocreativelabs You will not regret it. It may be blasphemy, but dare I say that my 16mp X-T1 produces better images than my 5D MKII. I did many comparisons, and still surprised by what I'm getting with such an old camera. Its even better with my XPro2.
5d mark II is the beast, beats my fuji xe1 in every way, only reason to use fuji is for its low weight and size, but picture quality, doesnt even come close, ok

I've got a Fuji XH-1 and a 10-24 F4 , 56 f1.2...trust me, I've used my 10-24 in heavy rains!!! And it never let me down..even when it isn't weather resistant! It took a lot of thinking to take my wide angle in rain..but now I'm Happy to see Fujifilm is AMAZING!🔥🔥🔥💕🙈
I've been using the 10-24 in pretty rough conditions too and I confirm that I have not had any problems with it. :-)
Yes, finally isn´t important the camera than you get, the most important think is you feel confortable using your camera. I looked one camera for me over one year and finally I bought the X-T20 whit dudes because you only see reviews of Sony, Canon, Nikon but Fuji almost doesn´t deepen, but I'm very happy and when I'm going to take pictures with people who carry Canon 6D, 5D, Sony A7III, etc, they are surprised by the quality of the RAW that is achieved with this powerful Fuji APS sensor. I love my camera and his lenses.
hey, chris, great video. my story is much shorter than yours -- the X-T2 is my first digital camera. Until Nov, 2016, I used to shoot film on a pentax me. when the time came, i choose mirrorless over dslr after a long study. first, i was going to get a oly om-d e-m5 mk 2, but when the XT2 came out, i was sold. i'm not a pro like you, i'm just an enthusiast, learning more everyday.

Hey Luciano, thanks for watching. I also looked into Olympus, but something drew me to the Fuji X-T2 instead. I love that camera, and I've been using it more and more. I just filmed another video this morning at sunrise. I still had the Canon in the car, just in case, but for my next shoot, it will stay at home.
Only real problem I found so far with X-T2 is appalling battery life. So weight of spare batteries should be added when one considers X-T2.
Otherwise admirable camera.
Petr Gladkikh indeed - but I’m trying different power saving and display settings. I can shoot almost all afternoon with just one battery.
I sold all my full frame canon gear to move to SONY full frame about 3 years ago. I recently sold some of my full frame sony gear and bought a couple XT2 bodies and lenses. I use the sony for video due to IBIS.
The three reasons I went with FUJI for stills are:
1: Dual card slots
2: Easier to use my old legacy lenses
3: Film simulations
The film simulations are really awesome. I've been shooting in JPEG on some occasions, which I usually never do!

Got the Fujifilm xt-20 for travel because I got tired of carrying my 5Diii with humungous lenses through baking hot landscapes including the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, all across Europe and through cities and streets. The travel images of the xt-20 are excellent and in terms of accessibility, usability and image quality/detail I wouldn't go back to my 5D for travel. I carry 3 lenses (although the 18-55mm rarely comes off) and the weight and size of the kit makes it so much easier to travel with. It's also less cumbersome in packed streets like in my recent trip to India.
The Canon remains my choice for portraiture and events such as weddings. Skin tones are more natural and it produces a more 35mm film like image quality. The two systems complement each other in my opinion and if you can afford to do so I'd say keep both.
Those r the exact reasons I switch from canon to Fuji. I bought a new canon 7D mk2in feb when the Fuji xt 2 came out in Sept I switched. Now I own 2 XT 2 cameras my wife owns one and same with my daughter. My wife was getting into photography and this camera does make it easier for her to learn on. Thanks for your video.

Hi Chris. I had I XT 20 for a second body. I ended up trading it in for a XT 2. I didn't like the feel of it. I have big hands and after a shoot it didn't feel right. Plus the settings r abit diff so going from one cam to another remembering where the setting is starts to become a pain so that's why I got another xt 2
I now made the move from Nikon d800e and usual landscape lenses to XT2 this year along with 16-55mm & 50-140mm lenses. Did side by side comparison first all the usual stuff and although the 800e was better not by much!! And after a change in editing and Iridient added to the workflow with my old eyes couldn’t tell the difference. Had to make the change as I’m 64yrs and struggling to carry heavy full frame
Do I miss my D800e? Course I do!
But sense had to prevail and couldn’t afford to keep both and at least now I can go a bit further with lighter gear

I have a 5DmkII that I've been using for about 6 years, and a Fuji X-T1 that I've had for a little over 2 years now, and trying to work out where go with new equipment in the next 12 months. I'm in the same position as your closing comments, which is that I love the Fuji but I have some lingering doubts. I feel like the two cameras are on reasonable terms, but the Canon still produces a better RAW file than the Fuji for the same subject/setting. This doesn't make a lot of difference to web-based content, but I notice it a lot when retouching portraits, particularly around eyes. I tend to use the Canon for client work for this reason as I know I'll have a better file to work with. It's worth noting this is with the ridiculous quality of the 24-70 2.8L II, and that with other lenses they're more comparable results. I also get that the X-T1 didn't have the same sensor size as the newer X-T2 so this should be better now.
That said, the Fuji outperforms the Canon in almost every other way: the autofocus is understandably 8 years better than when the mkII was released, the colour is INCREDIBLE and requires a lot less work in post, the camera itself is physically a joy to use coming from film cameras while I was learning photography, the electronic viewfinder is unbelievably helpful in low light situations (I don't care about the noise, I care that I can see anything at all) and the ISO noise is much, much better out at 6400. And like you said, people don't notice it when you're walking around with it, and I find I get different sorts of portraits from the Fuji than the Canon. The 82mm filter size on the 24-70 is really intimidating to be in front of. The Fuji is simply friendlier.
So I find myself traveling and using the Fuji for an every-day-carry kind of camera, and the Canon as a workhorse where it's reliable with the Canon strobes and trigger. But I would love to migrate fully to the Fuji system with the X-T2 if it really is as good as I'm lead to believe. I agree about the doubts over the weather sealing too.

I have been printing some of the images and they match the quality of the Canon, or even outperform it in sharpness and noise.
I just came back from a trip to France. The Canon stayed home and I did not miss it at all. ;-)

Since I acquired my Olympus OM-D E-M10 / E-M5 Mk ii my Canon 6D is collecting dust.
I got even more in love to my small mirrorless camera when I got my "pro" lenses (Oly 7-14 2.8, Oly 12-40 2.8, Oly 40-150 2.8).
The only thing which still keep me from selling my Canon gear is the set of portrait lenses (135 f/2, 85 1.4, 50 1.4, etc...).
For Micro four-third there isn't a lot of choices or they are pretty expensive (Oly 75mm 1.8, nocticron, ...)
For Fuji I would be eager to see "live" results of lenses such as the Fuji 90mm, 56mm APD
Regarding the ergonomy this is the big issue of Oly. The nice thing at least is that you can remap almost every buttons.
The Fuji XT3 is weather sealed which shows that they listen to customers and are constantly improving.
I completely and wholeheartedly endorse what you are saying here. Ive just made the switch after a couple of years deliberation and I have to say Im so glad I did. My Canon 5DMk2 was just to long in the tooth and I couldnt see any further with Canon.
I sold all my L series lenses and 2 5DMk2's and now I have a Fuji XT2 and an F2 50mm lens. the colours are amazing the weight saving is brilliant it might take some time to get used to the size difference but Im sure I will.

I started with a Canon 10D, at the time preferring it over a Nikon D100. I then got a D2H. A Canon 20D, then sold it and got a D200 which bricked within a year. Repeired, then sold for a D300. While waiting patiently for a Nikon D400, Fuji got back in the game with the Xpro1. I was immediately in love but always still needed a dslr. I liked the viewfinder placement of the XT1 but it was still a tad behind in the af department. Then the Nikon D500 released, probably the best apsc out now from Nikon and Canon. But I love my mirrorless cameras. I was starting to dab into full frame going back from a Nikon D610, 750 and then sold those as well as some Fuji lenses I didn't use as much for the Canon 5D IV as I liked the technology over the D810. But I really liked the D810 and Nikon finally gave it a boost recently with the D850 which for me made me sell my Canon because I love Nikons af system and the 70-200 fl vr. But for 80% of the time, I'm shooting with the XT2 and 50-140 and 16mm. The only lenses I still own for Fuji after selling the others for the GFX system which I do find phenomenal for most work. Sometimes I will carry the XT2 with a 16mm and I don't stand out. But most people don't see Fuji as a pro camera or even know what it is. They know what a Nikon or Canon is, but most people don't know what a GFX or XT2 is.

There is a 6th reason. The Fuji extremely more enjoyable to use. I Never had so much fun with my canons.
This might be because I started on film but you might share the same experience anyway.
I made the switch from the 5d3 to the XT1 and never looked back. The XT2 is a way better camera then the Xt1, should make the switch even easier. As for the WR, this might or might not been an issue.
I haven't been able to do any serious photography for over two years now, due to my business and my daughter which was born a year ago, so I never been able to test that side (WR) of the system.
It is also a shame that we actually never got to meet while I was still in Luxembourg.
Anyway, you produce some exceptional work, keep on going ... ideally... mirrorless :-)

I too recently purchased a XT-2. For the price it is an amazing camera. I got it for its light weight, exterior dials (retro look), and excellent image quality. I don't intend to give up my Canon 5D mk IV, it has it's place in my kit. Fuji for extended back packing, Canon for working out of the car trunk or a rolling case.
totally agree about the Canon camera. Im headed to a shoot in Croatia in a few months and am thinking of getting a Fuji outfit. to be stealth
Interesting comments Chris. I have made the swap, almost, from Canon 1DS3 to X-T2 but have one major difficulty. I shoot architecture and the 24mm shift lens is rarely off the Canon. Using super wides and the perspective cropping with the X-T2 does not get close to the Canon’s results. Fuji MUST bring out a 16mm tilt/shift lens!
I must say that I have never used a tilt-shift lens on my Canon 5D3, but I also do not shoot architecture in general, except for the occasional cityscape.
But I believe you could maybe use your Canon tilt-shift on your X-T2 with a lens adapter. I haven't tried it, but it might be a temporary fix for you.
I used to work with a canon 40D shooting weddings, in 2010 i bought a 5D Mk2 but a few years ago, since x-T1 it just got into my mind i would switch to mirrorless. A few days my 5Dmk2 started to show black bars from the shutter curtains, it passed way beyond the number of shoots :-), today i ordered a x-T2.
I believe coming from a 5Dmk2 the diference will be so much more noticeble than from a mk3.
I use Nikon and Fuji . Fuji for streetphotography mostly or just common. However, I will not part from my Nikon because I have a 135mm F2 DC and 300mm F2.8 and the output of these 2 lenses can not be reproduced by the Fuji system.
Also reason for using the Fuji is the viewfinder which can actually show my shots in B/W or show compensation which current DSLR's can't .

Last week I sent all Nikon gear to adorama and traded for all Fuji gear after using a x-t3 an a x-t2 for a wedding was really impressed with the fast focus an great images they produced
I am considering a full switch to Fuji as well. I have been a Nikon owner for a while but earlier this year bought the XT2. I love it! I actually still have a pre order out for a D850 lol. I don't think I'll ever see that camera... So now it's peaked my interest to fully switch over. I shoot landscapes but also shoot weddings and portraits.
I can't speak for the D850. It certainly looks like an amazing camera. But it's a DSLR. So the advantages I talk about in this video do not apply to it, compared to the Fuji X-T2. It all depends on your use of the cameras. I have some friends that shoot weddings with Fuji cameras, and they seem quite happy with them.
All your reasons are valid, but most if not all would apply if you switch from a FF DSLR to a APS-C DSLR. My Nikon D7100 DSLR APS-C with its 18-200mm lease weighs less than the Fuji XT2 with its 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. The Nikon will shoot over 1,000 images on one battery charge but the Fuji tops out at 200...so you need the extra weight and bulk of the vertical grip/battery pack...and I can change shutter speed and aperture without taking my eye away from the viewfinder, but with a Fuji you have to look at the top plate and/or move one hand away from supporting the lens/camera to adjust a top dial...Fuji has strong marketing in the UK, but in other markets in Europe it has lost no market share. The new Nikon D500 weighs the same as my D7100 and the image quality and focus speed of the D500 would beat the Fuji hands down. So, is the Fuji really such a winner?
You can change ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, etc. without taking your eye away from the viewfinder of the X-T2.
I constantly use my XT-2, almost everyday and I get more than 320 shots per charge while mostly in boost mode to increase EVF refresh rate. I might get even more if I used standart mode. It's still less than DSLR. Looking top of the plate all the time? At the beginning, yes but after 1-2 weeks its all muscle memory and you can see the settings in the evf, even a DOF scale!
I have a Fuji xt2! I love the size of it (not too small) and I love the weight. I’ve been on some trips carrying a Canon 5dmk3 and 1dmk3 with a handful of lenses and batteries and it was HEAVY! I’m interested to start shooting some landscapes with it and I’ve seen stunning results from different photographers. I’ll add that I love the results with portraits, I have a handful of the f2 primes. I love my 90mm f/2. It produces beautiful photos
I also spent several years pretty happily using a 5D3 and a standard complement of L lenses. But I kept seeing images from Fuji X100s. So, I got an X100S. Over a couple of years I gradually began to trust Fuji. I got an XPro1 and XT10. They were too slow, but the image quality and ease of use meant my 5D3 spent more and more time not going out with me. When the XPro2 and XT2 came along, I got rid of the Canon stuff. My biggest difference is that I don't have to fight with the Fuji stuff the way I always had to fight with the Canon -- too many compromises. The Fujis see the way I see, and I don't have to stand on my head to get the results I want. I can't speak to the durability or weather issues. I don't do that stuff. One thing I don't miss is lens focus adjustments. With landscape, it's not a big issue, but for close work, you have to take every Canon lens and go through an AF calibration to make sure you'll get the result you want, especially at wide apertures. With live view, I see and get exactly what I want. I've also, for the first time ever, began using some jpg straight from camera (or with minimal tweaks). Fuji film simulations are outstanding. I don't agree with your thinking about a different perception when encountering someone with a Fuji XT2. When I show up with an XT2 and its 16-55 lens, people see me as a pro. When I show up with my X100F, I'm just an old guy with a point & shoot or some old film camera -- they don't even notice. Anyway, best of luck.

As for the point about perception, it's probably because the lenses I'm using are not that big. lol
The 16-55 and 55-140 look way bigger. But I still think the Canon lenses with their red rings and white lenses attract more attention.

I switched to Fujifilm earlier this year. I went with the X-Pro2 over the X-T2 because of the hybrid viewfinder.
When it comes to ergonomics I don't think there is a current camera company on the market that even comes close to Fujifilm. Well maybe Leica does but those cost a small fortune.
One reason I might add is the OOC JPEG quality. I used to shoot RAW only but I can honestly say that many of my shots done in JPEG are amazing. It has cut my post production time in half. I shoot RAW+JPEG so if I need to tweek an image I can, but don't find I need to very often.

4:33 To adequately compare the sensors you have to do it in low light conditions. The whole point of a larger sensor is to allow more light to be captured thus eliminating the noise created when applying the required amplification. With that said, the X-T2 does have a higher ISO range than most cameras in its price range and does in fact do an incredible job at keeping noise to a minimal with its run of the mill sensor. The only real reason I'm considering a purchase of this camera is due its light weight and portability, I intend to be mounting either this or the Sony A7R ii to a custom drone we're busy constructing.
I have both Nikon and Fuji systems. I may switch to Fuji when they release their first 200mm or longer prime.
I shot Nikon for over a decade, I had the D200, D90 and more recently the D800E, I also had some of their best lenses. I had surgery on my back a while ago and found lugging all the gear around painful. I too got fed up of people thinking I was a pap anytime I took the bigger cameras out! I got myself an XT-1 with the 35mm 1.4 and some lovely old MF lenses that work wonderful with Fuji bodies, and also added an xpro1. Couldn't be happier, well, there's a lot of Fuji lenses I still want, but otherwise I don't feel I'm missing anything.
Good video--I switched from Nikon 610 to Xt-1 and now Xt-2. For me one more important plus on the Fuji side is the EVF. Prefer it so much over the OVF.
Thanks Larry. I must admit, coming from the 5D III with its OVF, it took me some time to get used to the EVF.
I’m a Canon 1Dx user and thinking about changing. I also have a X-Pro1 which I love but I use a Canon Fd 28mm lens. I’m a press and wedding photographer. I am getting a loan kit from Fuji on Friday so will see how it performs.
From what I hear, the Fuji is great for weddings. I have no experience with press photography, but I use the Fuji for street too and it performs beautifully.
Hello Christopher, I purchased the Fuji XT3 in 2019 I have been practicing with the camera and I like it very much. I share the same reasons as yours as well, but mainly I purchased it for a walk around tool and somehow I also purchased two additional lenses the 10-24 which as of this writing is being shipped and I have been using the 18-135mm and the 18-55mm. I also enjoy shooting with my Nikon D-810 as well, The Nikon has a good resolving power to details with good glass and an excellent dynamic range. The XT3 is also a powerful tool once mastered.
Somehow I also see that when it comes to resolution the Fuji medium formats do deliver a lot more than what a crop sensor could. I wish though that Fujifilm would also manufacture a full frame exactly like the Fuji crop sensor, similar to the XT3 camera with all the same functions and a battery grip that has some good grip and a large battery of course.
I owned both brands. My fuji X-t2 is fun as I used it more for travels and small projects but I still preferred my canon bodies when it comes down to business.
very good, informative non biased review. I am looking at switching from Canon 5d Mk III but am still a little bit doubtful as I do work my gear hard. Very much want an articulated screen and less menu based controls.

Lovely video Christophe, might I add a point why I switched from DSLR to mirrorless which you didn't give in your video?
The lens choice. Loving nature-photography myself, I never actually use AF. With the Mirrorless A7 I now have the possibility to choose any lens I might want from M42 to Leica to even Medium Format lenses. Some of these old lenses are true gems and easily hold up with modern lenses. They are beautifully built, cheap and produce tack-sharp images with beautiful bokeh. That said, I now own exclusively vintage lenses, I don't even bother with the modern ones as the old ones suit me perfectly fine for a fraction of the price compared to new ones.

I have a 17-40 f4 L, a 70-200 f2.8 L non is and a 7D 1. I’m planning on doing the same switch with more or less the same reasons as you did. I can imagine if you compared your 5Dmk3 with the Fuji and there almost the same regarding picture quality, I think me switching my 7D for the Fuji would be a no brainer. Not trash talking my trusty Canon but 5D mk3 is way better than the 7D mk1 picture quality wise. I havent made up my mind yet....
I just purchased a XT3 to supplement my 5D4 on the video side of things. I keep hearing how great the fuji images are and some claim to be superior to Canon's full frame. I find that hard because as much as I would like to believe it since I am buying one, the different XT3 galleries do not reflect that. I hope I am wrong...because If I can also get great still images with the Fuji that is a winner for me since it is lighter and smaller than my 5D4.
Great video. I've recently switched from being a less than happy Sony shooter to a very happy Fuji shooter. I have seen rumoured for a while an 8-16 F2.8 WR lens coming. Don't know
if that is still happening but would satisfy your weather resistant wide zoom need. 😊

I also had a look at the Sony cameras before getting the X-T2. But I can't really say anything about the Sonys since I never really used them. The X-T2 had everything I wanted in a camera (and more). I didn't really shoot video before starting this vlog, but that 4k should come in handy now.
I read about the rumours for the 8-16 WR lens. It sounds great and will probably be an amazing lens. From my experience though, lenses that wide don't work well with filters. I owned a 8-16 on my Canon 50D a long time ago, and it had a bulbed front, which made using filters impossible. And I need to be able to put on my filters on my lenses.
Hi Christophe. I just watched a few of your videos after discovering your FB Page and UA-cam channel about two weeks ago. In late summer, I also thought about what to do in terms of camera equipment, and I also was using a 5D Mark III basically since the day it launched. I had always used Canon throughout my 13 years of photography, but was not happy with the development of their cameras. They leave featured out of some models just to push others, instead of offering the best they can. So I took a look at other systems, and of course, because of all the hype, also into mirrorless systems. The APS-C versions (like the Fuji XT2) were not in my list of candidates, because of the weather sealing (or the lack of, like you said) of the entire system. Sony with their A7 RII (and now even RIII), had, at first, the obvious advantage of the total weight. BUT if you look closely, there's not much difference, as the only thing which weighs less, is the body itself. The lenses weigh the same as their Canon or Nikon counterparts, or even more. So with a body, some accessories and 3-4 lenses in a backpack, the final difference was only 200-300g, which is almost nothing. Therefore the argument "mirrorless saves you weight compared to dslrs" isn't really valuable. In your case it's different because you compare a full-frame dslr to an APS-C mirrorless, but an APS-C dslr with aps-c specific lenses would also save you weight compared to full-frame.
Personally I chose to switch to Nikon, as their philosophy with the D850 is clear: Put everything they have into one body, and that's what I like to see when I pay more than 3000€ for a body.

Hi Johnny. Thanks for watching. Initially, I got the X-T2 as a backup camera, but I am so impressed with the quality, that I haven't used my Canon 5D Mark III since I got the X-T2. I have used for all my trips this year and I have used it for several professional photography assignments. Since the whole system is APS-C, I think I gained at least 2kg of weight. I haven't calculated too much, because since I started vlogging I added other gear to my backpack, so it's still heavy (but not as heavy as if I had the vlogging gear and the Canon!)

Your right about the files being that good, in some instances as good as full frame including 3200 ISO. I just switched my self to a X-H1 and XF16-55 f/2.8 just as a start. Great files. I also used a 5D3 for over 3.5 years and compared files so I can understand your excitement. Thanks

I agree fantastic camera, but one downside...battery life... I m a Canon pro photographer and bought the XT2 because of its reputation( and the image quality is once again great)I had to buy the grip in order to get a decent battery life... and the canera lost one of the mirrorless advantage.. Weight... So some more work for Fuji to match the"pro" market in my opinion.
Indeed, the battery life is very poor compared to the bigger DSLR. I am not using the battery grip right now, to keep that weight advantage. But I always have 3 batteries with me.
As a lanscape photographer you would benefit from a high res camera and low noise in base ISO such as D850
For now, the resolution and noise performance of the X-T2 are more than enough for my professional use. But in case I would need to do really high resolution pictures, the D850 would probably be my go-to choice (instead of the Canon 5DS R). For me, it's mostly a question of using the right tool, for the right job. ;-)
The learning curve for canons in general is pretty low, kinda disagree. But I do agree fuji is easy as well
I have canon 80D which i love very much but then i got the fuji xt200 and i am so surprise with the picture quality and the weight so i use both cameras

Hello Chris, I like the videos you make a straight forward approach w/out a lot of unnecessary talk. I purchased recently the Fuji XT3 and I have been learning to use it, and the more I used it the more I liked it. I also shoot with the Nikon D-810 which is a very good machine and yes it is on the heavy side. Nevertheless I am keeping it for landscapes and other types of photography. With the Fuji I intend to have it as a walk around gear since it is more comfortable and smaller with less weight. So now I am learning another system which I am enjoying it. I certainly like the Fuji lenses so far I have the kit lens 18-55 F 2.8 - 4 and the 55-200-mm 3.5-4.8 this second lens is sharp and the image stabilizer works extremely well. I am also planning to purchase the 16-80 mm F-4.0 when it comes to market this September. I might also purchase the 100-400 mm in the future. After shooting with the Fuji I realized when handling the Nikon D-810 the difference in weight and bulk, but I will be keeping it since it is a workhorse of a camera. Enjoyed your videos and I have subscribed to the channel. Thank you.
Fuji makes live so much easier and has given me so much creative liberty.
Except for flash photography and hss where fuji and equipment compatibility is limited.
Bokeh is no issue at all when using 90 mm and 56 mm just beautiful.
Durability on xpro1 is really great except for weather resistence but for the rest really almost unbreakable.
Real downside for me is battery life, so multiple switches and extra batteries and thus Some extra weight Needed.

I agree that several batteries are needed. That said, I always had 2-3 batteries for my 5D Mark III as well. The Fujifilm batteries are lighter, and I always have 3 in my bag too. ;-)
I've got a 6D and an X-T2. I'm not convinced on switching yet. The low light performance, battery life and waxy skin tones are all a bit of a bummer

Hey Vineet. I do not really work in photojournalism, so I can't really give you any advice on what's best for that purpose. But the 70D seems to be a very good camera, so you probably don't need to change right away. Maybe somebody else reading this can give you more advice. Cheers
I switched from 70D to FF XT2. They both produce excellent quality images. I am not a photojournalist but I do enjoy street photography and also working with NGOs to capture the work that they are doing (with an emphasis on people). The point that Cristophe makes about being unobtrusive is important anytime you are trying to capture candid people photos. I have found it MUCH easier to go in and be almost unnoticed with my FF. I would definitely think the same would hold true in photojournalism. Good luck!
Hi Christopher many thanks for an insightful video. I to have a 5dMkIII and am thinking of switching to Fuji, probably an X-Pro II for all the reasons that you highlighted. My wife laments each time I bring the 5DMkIII out to take a holiday snap, she may have a point. The Fuji is much smaller and as I mainly use primes the package overall with Fuji primes will be significantly smaller, lighter, less conspicuous and wife friendly (hopefully).

I still have my Olympus OM1n. A dial for the shutter speed and an aperture ring on the lens. Set the ISO manually too (only needed for the metering system) An on/off switch for the meter. Everything under simple, direct control. Fuji offer the same direct simplicity, not a marketing ploy but a better way of controlling the camera, simple and direct. The evf gives a lot of enhancements with lots of data shown and permanent live view to check exposure. FUji lenses are at least the equal of Canon L lenses, better in some cases , I switched from Canon APSC and mainly L lenses and think that the comparable Fuji lenses are generally better as they are designed to work with the smaller sensor. IQ is more than acceptable, I shoot raw and my XT-2 produces images that need far less work than similar from Canon, if the difference between this and a FF matter it's a very small number of people and they are pixel peepers, not photographers. Durability? remains to be seen but everything seems well made from mainly metal and not plastic so should last well. I don't regret making the switch to Fuji, the alternative was the size and weight of a FF DSLR so whats not to like about Fuji?
Looking to switch from the Sony a7riii to the Fujifilm xt4. Besides low light performance, what are some things I should be worried about?
Less dynamic range, less depth of field of course and less resolution (meaning less cropping possibilities). I think only the second one is really relevant in low lighting conditions.
Left Nikon D7100 over a year ago. It rarely went with me. I have my X-T2 or X-E1 with me almost always. People don’t care that you are shooting. The weight savings is glorious. On a recent trip to Italy this summer (HOT) I almost.. almost .. felt bad for those people covered in sweat lugging big DSLR gear around.
For any Canon users that are still in doubt hear me out.
Why I switched from Canon (crop) and Sony (ff) ?
Last year I bought a cheap X-e2 to test out the "Fuji colors" and what I found out was:
- the ISO performance is on the same level as my a7ii
- the build quality, attention to detail and overall usability (menus, dials) out matches both companies
- even the "cheap" lenses outperform their Canon equivalents
- you don't need the latest camera / every camera they release is at LEAST decent
In the case of Canon in particular I was a huge fan of the EOS M series, had most of them m, m10, m50, m100. They haven't changed anything, the Digic processor has the exact noise they had in 2012... And same as on the xxxD series. Go above 800 ISO and the color noise is disgusting
Canon lenses are mediocre at best, even the L series. I had tested lenses made in the 70s and their current equivalent, most of the image quality is still the same...
Astrophotography, horrible on canon (at least the normal spectrum ones)
Dynamic range and video mediocre (on crop, ff is slightly better).
Canon is like Apple, giving you a tiny piece of what you want and crippling the heck out of their products, the m50 II is the perfect example. They managed to sell you the same camera for the past at least 12 years.
Lack of updates - Fuji added phase detect improved AF to their older bodies and constantly fixes or adds stuff.
Build quality, plastic is fantastic until you get to taste proper quality
I have the same concern as you about the durability, otherwise I will switch in a a second. And I think for serious sports photographers, you need at least one CF or XQD card slot on the body, and I don't mind the body being bulkier (like GH5). So I would like to see what the X-T3 will be like.
I honestly put some of my concerns to rest about durability after my trip to Iceland, where I took the X-T2 very close and even under some waterfalls. I have not tested extreme temperatures yet, but winter is coming... ;-)
I find the X-T2 pretty fast with the dual SD. I tested it for some wildlife photography recently, and I am quite happy with the result (video coming soon).
I'm also looking forward to the X-T3. Or maybe some kind of full frame mirrorless body from fuji.
I shoot motorsport and I would say motorsport photography is one of if not the toughest shooting of all styles. I am not sure if the fujis can withstand the harsh conditions and sometimes even fire during shooting. I read a guy dropped his 5D mark III and put the camera back together with some tapes and shot a Formula 1 race without any problems. And I had similar but less serious situation with my 5D mark IV, there was not even a scratch. I don't know if I can have the same level of confidence with fuji cameras.
I had an X-T20 so I know how good the brand is, that's why it is still attractive to me for a switch.
as you said, i thought i d never move to a aps c sensor again, and its what i think, crop sensors just cant compete... i have a similar background, but my start was a 30d and when i got my first full frame i regreted not having a ff with me on every good shot i had with the 30d ... different then you i just have never made any money with landscape and wildlife shots i ve taken. Still about 6mo ago i bought a 1dx2 for my self and to rent to a friend so it could pay it self, but the rental was too slow so 3 days ago i sold the 1dx2 to this friend and and just ordered a tx2(wish it had touchscreen) a fx 18mm, fx27mm fx35mm fx60mm macro, but thats because i just wanna shoot street and random easyshots with it, if i was to get any landscape interior shoots i wouldnt even consider the tx2 for it, my 5d3 and L glasses would beall over it... unless the project is low budget and casual . BUT YEAH, Canon is loosing ground, i do realise their cameras are work horses that lasts for ever.but they pick and choose what technology they put in what camera. my fking 1dx2 6k usd camera didnt have wireless connection not even to fucking at least remotely shoot, not to say a full app to live view, change settings etc, while t6i 600 bucks camera and 6ds 1k usd have gps wifi etc .. I have a feeling the new generation will tell canon a nikon to fuck off and sony and fuji gonna be the big players.
Full Frame is also a crop factor sensor. Use large format.

I know this video is from a year ago and it popped up in my UA-cam. I'm considering to switch from Nikon D750 to fuji xt3. Like you said it's difficult to switch. It's a beast of a very good camera but the fuji is much lighter and if the pics of the xt3 are nice than it had to be nicer of the xt3.
Anyways, it's difficult and to switch to an other brand. Still considering 🙄

thanks for the very useful video! i'm using a canon 450D (rarely because of the size!) so bought a canon g9x for pocketability because it had RAW. unfortunately, i can't convert on my old computer running xp! (no problems with the 450D). so i need to go mirrorless, probably the fuji, and buy a new computer & some up-to-date software for RAW conversion! better start buying buying lottery tickets first, i guess .....
fuji is still going through transitional phase. they are slowly adding touchscreen, i hear the the x-t2 successor will add IBIS. now all they need is for a fully articulating screen.
they gotta get rid of that 2.5mm mic jack and just go fully with 3.5mm with every model. i've had that 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor fall off so many times.
CS waiting for the next gen fujis they are going to be so good!

While the Fuji systems is great: price different is low.
As for the iq.. 5d3 still have the edge.

Dude I'm in the same boat; 5DmkIII & XT2...
I can't say anything about durability of XT2, since I have that camera just for a couple of months, but I can guarantee for her predecessor, XT1, which I used in blazing heat, as well in snow and rain.
On the other hand, I wasn't so lucky with the 5DmkIII; after an hour in a downpour, that camera suffered water leakage what coused corrosion after two weeks - I didn't menage to get to repair shop sooner...
By the way, there's a new wide angle zoom lens on a Fuji lens roadmap which should be WR. In the meantime, I got 16mm f/1,4. Yes it's not the widest nor a zoom lens, but wide enough, wether resistnat and 1,4...

i used the X-T2 and some non WR Lenses in Tromsö (ok only -9°C) but no one of the lenses let my down, even in a small snowstorm, they worked just fine...

I am using the 23mm f2 and it's an amazing lens! I will be doing another video one of these days about the lenses I use on the Fuji for landscape photography. ;-)
Andrew Griffiths the 18-135 is a good lens but not a great one, if you need a telephoto go for the 55-200!

I can’t decide between the canon 80d, lumix g85, Sony a6400, and the Fuji T X30 for 1080P video I know you probably won’t respond but if you see this please help.

1. Lighter (fair)
2. Price (have you seen lens prices?)
3. Easier to learn (lol all the settings are the same and Canon has better menus)
4. Looks less professional and is more discreet (my XH1 with grip is surprisingly bigger than my 5Ds. The 5Ds battery life is comparible to all three fuji batteries with the grip!)
5. IQ is almost as good as 4 year old Canon cameras (IQ is worse)
You neglected to mention that Canon has a much greater lens selection, and Fuji lenses will never be as fast and shallow as Canon lenses due to the sensor size.
You can buy F1.4 Canon lenses for $300 used. You can buy the F1.4 (F1.8 equivalent) Fuji lenses for $500-800 used.
I posted the XH1 for sale and not one person gave me a reasonable offer (except someone who's going to trade me his 6Dmk2 for my XH1)
Fuji has a problem retaining value of it's bodies. I suspect Canon prices are going to drop now that the R and RP systems are out, but then again that makes moving in the system easy.
Canon is so saturated in the market, its easy to find secondhand lenses, and even quality third party options.
Speaking of mechanical functions, the joystick and scroll wheel on the Canon 5D series cameras are far superior than the equivalent controls on the Fuji.
Speaking of ergonomics, the Canon grip is far more comfortable to hold, and while looking through the viewfinder and holding the camera, you can change all your settings by only using your finger, your thumb, or your finger and thumb! Mechanical settings are garbage when the camera supports digital settings. It's a sales gimmick. I doubt people will use the wheels when they figure out they can customize the customizable scrollwheels. Also Canon having standard setting controls makes it easy for cameras to be passed around efficiently, especially when it comes to shooting with others and trading gear at jobs. Canon is a reliable system and the equipment is far more durable and reliable.
Fuji may take video, but it's a stills camera, and Canon FF cameras are much better to use.

@@success762 The only advantage fuji had over Canon for the consumer market was video, but now the 5Dmk4 and the new R5 stomp Fuji. The R5 shoots 8K. Canon finally decided that it's okay to cannibalize their sales on their c300 series cameras. They likely had a large stock already made which is why they took so long to announce a video capable mirrorless body.

Thanks, Christophe. I looked at the X-T2 and the X-T20 and went with the X-T20 because I wanted to go even smaller and lighter. My understanding is, they use the same sensor and processor, so I should get the same image quality. Is that correct? I can live without some of the features of the X-T2 that the X-T20 does not have, such as weather sealing, extra card slot, etc..
Yes, I own both, and image quality is identical. There are a few features missing on the X-T20, but it's a great camera at a great price and great form factor.

Although I still have kept my canon as my plan b just in case as I’ve got better lens on it :))). I want to switch to Fuji sooo badly but one crucial factor stops me. The crop factor! I am tired of Canon's 1.6x crop factor limiting my photography and I want to break away into FF so I can get the full viewing angles of my lenses but the Fujis are APSC sensors too and I will have the same problem. I'm tired of standing so far away to get a portrait with my 50mm lens. I also shoot film and obviously that's like shooting full frame. After shooting film for a while and then picking up my DSLR, it's like looking through a tiny little window and I have to retrain my muscle memory to compensate for the 1.6x crop factor. I have to stand a little further away and because of that, I lose some background blur when I refocus. APSC is the devil. I hate to say it but Sony might have my business if Fuji doesn't come out with a FF model soon because I am over Canon

When I made this video I still had some doubts because the X-T2 was new. But now that I have been using it for nearly 6 months, and taken it on several trips, I am very happy with it. Check my Iceland videos to see how it fares under a waterfall. ;-)

I thought about and had the exact same thoughts as you. I made up my mind on Friday and today I got the X-T2. What a beast of a camera.

On an apsc camera there is no replacing a full frame body with an 85mm lens. 85mm equivalent on a cropped sensor is not the same. I've been looking at upgrading from my Rebel T3i to a 6d mk2 or a good used 5D mk3. I'm also looking at the Fujifilm X-T2 because I have been really impressed by the camera and the lens quality but for me I keep going back to the bokeh. A 56mm on the Fujifilm X-T2 does not produce equivalent bokeh. I love the bokeh that my sigma 24-70 ex dg produces at 70mm. No comparison.
For portraits, FF is probably still a better option than APSC. But in my case, I mostly do landscapes, so bokeh does not matter much. I had the 85mm on the 5D MIII and it definitely produces some incredible bokeh.

I can see the similarity. But the XP picture was taken somewhere in the US. I saw a documentary about it once. ;-)
