Singer, author, accordionist Alfred "Weird Al" Yankovic is in Studio Q to talk about his decades spanning career, the beefs his music has generated, and the struggle to publish his Lady Gaga parody "Perform this Way."
Al is so successful because he IS so intelligent. To do parody properly, one must be well-read and quite smart. You can't just make obvious silly lyrics.. you need to tease the audience sometimes by switching up what they expect to hear. Al does that brilliantly.
I love how Al is sitting cross-legged on the chair during this interview!!!! He is so laid back and relaxed and never takes himself too seriously!!!! I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!!
I always sit cross-legged and i'm always freaking out. Not sure it's a laid back thing.
"He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life." Homer Simpson
Well done, Private.
Ray Ross He doesn't do parodies that could cause somebody discomfort.
Ray Ross He also usually doesn't take suggestions. Madonna was an exception.
@@rayross997 Insipid idea, seriously.
Whoa, nice! I gotta find that scene
The best Weird Al interview I've seen.
Really enjoyable interview - it makes a huge difference when both parties are intelligent individuals with their heads screwed on. Loved it!
well this didn't age well.
@@brianbenoit6883 In what way? What did I miss?
This man has changed me for the better.I am now embracing my weird and totally Loving it!
This is the second interview I've seen with this guy and he is interesting and respectful, I really love it!
Amazing that you made it to 2015 without hearing of weird Al
@@huggleskuishy Right. It's Weird Al and NOT the interviewer I was talking about eight years ago. Obviously.
jian is/was such a good interviewer
Not enough people talk about Al's originals. The parodies get all the talk, but the originals are purely fantastic. I wish those got more videos and play. Well, in my house they get a bunch of play, so... He's an amazing artist, and his band is made up of truly incredible musicians. Great interview.
Hardware store is one of the best rap songs ever
i love this interview the guy is asking some really good questions
4 people are tired of life...
Al can go grocery shopping and not worry. But, he is known worldwide. That guy has
the life.
Yeah, but he's also one of the most unattractive men on the planet.
Robert Stiles He's absolutely adorable. Just because you don't think he's good looking doesn't mean that other people don't find him attractive. He also has a good looking intelligent wife, so I think he's doing quite well in that department.
@@RobertStiles how dare. He's absolutely adorable and pretty attractive for his age.
@@ashleycantrell9844 For his age? He's actually gotten better looking, but I'm 50, so he doesn't seem old to me.
@@Primalxbeast ppfft I'm 22, but you ain't wrong though 😳
The hubs and I took our 12yo son to see Al a few weeks ago for his first-ever live show and he loved it! Al and his band put on such a fantastic show, and Emo Phillips opened for him. Weird Al is a national treasure. ❤
2 Things: It's obvious that Jian was tired during this interview, but what I liked even more was the fact that we KNOW Weird Al is extremely intelligent, but what Weird Al found out early on in this interview is that Jian is also extremely intelligent. You can see in the interview that Weird Al picks up on that fact and we see a much more REAL Weird Al emerge, where he doesn't have to dumb things down. You can see that Weird Al is impressed by Jian's sharpness and in turn Weird Al delivers.
"A Kid, An Accordion, and a Dream - The 'Weird Al' Story"
I'd watch it.
weird al is my hero!
This interviewer is so damn good!
I’m a filthy, godless atheist, but I’ve been to Al’s church and I’ve got to say that the fact that Al Yankovic’s career has persisted for all these years is quite possibly the best evidence for the existence of God that I’ve ever come across.
I pray you find Christ's love and salvation, I don't say that to spit in your face and say "Yuck! I disagree with you!" I say it because God loves me more than I could ever love him, and he loves you the same. His love is the only reason I bother.
man about time with the whole interview thank you guys love the work you guys do
Thanks for putting up the whole thing guys!
That was a really great interview. I couldn't stop watching.
Wow, I didn't even recognize you Jian, you look totally different from your days with Moxy Früvous, man I miss your music! And great interview, Früvous and Weird Al were the albums I played most in the 90's-2000's, kinda rockin' to see you together!
Finally this one got put up!
Awesome interview, thanks for the work Qtv (and Weird Al of course) :)
@ludovica36 Weird Al was in studio back in July, doing publicity for Alpocalypse.
I lovveeee these interviews. Keep it up!
What a great interviewer! He asked great questions and I learned some more about Werid Al. Thank you! I’m looking forward to hearing more Weird Al music. ❤
a great interview
I love these interviews! You pick great people! :)
"You're not totally conventional looking."
LoL. Fantastic.
thanks for uploading! :)
A great interview!!
He and his band will never get the recognition they deserve for being such awesome musicians but I guess it comes with the territory, like Spike Jones back in the 50's..
"Having said that, you look really good."
Best. Line of inquiry. Ever.
An American genius; live long and prosper Weird Al.
man, every celebrity should be this cool! He's not a cocky douche like chris brown or kanye west or anyone. Just a really cool guy with some really weird hair
He doesnt get old
i usually find al's songs first and then check out the original song.
Living legend!
"I think when people get tired of me, they'll let me know"
He who is tired of Weird Al, is tired of life - Homer Simpson.
Great guy man, i'm surprised there aren't any comments on this interview
Al was valedictorian of his high school class...Weird Al's parodies are brilliant...He has had a very successful musical career...Weird Al should be a Vegas act at one of the big hotels...I think it would do well...Al is a novel act, not a "novelty act".
Would "Weird Al" Yankovic ever "do Las Vegas"? That would last until the first parody song about Sin City...then he'd be run out of town, laughing all the way to the bank!
So real!perfect
I used to watch his kids show when I was a lad. Had all of his albums. He is certainly a really cool dude :)
that laptop loooks very old...thanks for this interview
that laptop is older than I am...
Jian, if you take suggestions for interviews I think you would find Christopher West fascinating. He speaks and teaches theology of the body. I think you're insightful and genuine curiosity would make for a memorable interview with this man.
Al is the best.
Weird Al seems to bring out the rebel in Jian - he said "piss" twice in this interview haha
I have always tried to figure out why Jian has an ancient laptop in front of him that even has a floppy drive on every show. I have a web radio station and have worked in commercial stations but still cannot figure out the function. Can anyone tell me or share some insight? Also to the 3 thumbs down people, you can stay crusty and hopefully not bother the rest of us in the world having a good time and respecting genuine people like Weird Al.
I think it is his old setup to get scheduling and info from outside the booth. E.g. in the vid where Billy Bob goes nuts you can read "If this goes sideways you can go to..." on it. My guess why they are still using it would be never change a running system.
Madagon That is along the lines of what I was thinking. May be an antiquated system but is hardwired and works perfectly and in fact is very functional. So you are saying it is the communication system. Working in so many studios I have often used ancient patch bays and monitoring set-ups I would never change over modern tech. For example, we had a new ethernet linked monitoring system that was a headache due to external source issues and the old gear was better suited so we returned it. Same as my stations analog mixer vs. the new digital one we tried, it took days of tech support(us) to get it running properly and in the end it worked but still had issues so we went back to the analog. Thanks for the insight Madagon.
lol...floppy drive...maybe that explains his whole problem.
@@brianbenoit6883 underrated comment
"You don't change. At all."
I wold love if Yankovic wold design a building.
this interview is true
It's you again!
its compleat lol, great interview by the way, few people get to see a lot of the real Al as he mostly jokes around or gives politically correct answers, you sure did a nice job, props man.
HAS HE GOT A LISP OR IS THIS BECAUSE IT IS 7AM AND I HAVEN'T SLEPT AND MAY POSSIBLY HAVE TO WORK LATER
He doesn't age!
he has a lisp, ive never noticed it before
Re-watching this again, it's obvious that Jian is very tired during this interview. His eyes look half closed and his speech is a little slurred. He's not his usual self. Still, I enjoyed the interview as always.
Can anyone imagine an alternate timeline where Al is just an architect?
Janković! :)
Idk where I heard this but somewhere I heard the following: If "Weird Al" has parodied you or your band, it's an implication that you've ''made it" as a musician.
I can't belevie weird al is a dad!
when was this recorded?
50
they wouldn't call Saturday Night Live a 'novelty show'
Did the interviewer just try to start a rap war between Coolio and Weird Al Yankovic?
No, that happened when Amish Paradise came out.
Doctor Craptonicus that dates to the 90s and Coolio eventually cooled out
+Doctor Craptonicus should still happen.

Just wierd stuff.
"How is it that you look so good. [...] Do you think it's part of it, the vegetarianism? [...] As a touring musician you seem healthier than most." "It's hard to say what to attribute that to, but I would like to put in a plug for the vegetarian diet because I think it makes sense and it's a healthy way to go. So sure, let's say that." One of the de rigueur things to say now, for some reason? Then kids do it, because so and so said so, and they don't know any better. How about being blessed with good genes, doing what you love, having a loving and supportive family, and not having too much stress in one's life or coping with it well being the culprit, as there's plenty of scientific evidence against vegetarianism. Aside from well-documented crucial nutrient deficiencies, vegans have much lower testosterone levels than their meat-eating counterparts (!), but also, as found in a recent Medical University of Graz study, the vegetarian diet carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. More widely known evidence, of cancer alone - and celebrities? Steve Jobs, a life-long vegetarian, died of cancer. Linda McCartney - died of breast cancer. Robin Gibb - of the Bee Gees, died of stomach cancer. Adam Yauch, Beastie Boys, died of cancer. Harvey Milstein, proponent of the raw food hygiene, died of colon cancer. George Harrison - died of lung cancer. Eva Ekvall, Miss Venezuela, died of breast cancer age 29. Vihara Youkta, yogini, dancer and raw food enthusiast for some 30 years, died of bowel cancer. So plugs like this are certainly non-evidence based and are quite misleading, if anyone takes what celebrities say seriously.
This is a textbook example of Correlation does not equal Causation. They could have all died from other reasons than not eating meat. Even if they were Vegetarians, there are way too many factors in play to blame it on that. In North America we eat WWAAAYYY too much Cheese and Sugar, both being allowed for Vegetarians, that could be linked. It could also be all the drugs celebrities take. You also did not mention all the celebrities that did not die of cancer, so the sample is biased from the start since you cherry-picked the ones that died.
I would say he's healthy because he doesn't use drugs or alcohol! (Thank God there ARE people who do not.)
I do think it is the genes and also the fact that he did have great and supportive parents and friends. He also doesn't have vices associated with many artists. Drugs and alcohol and other vices affect the physical body negatively as well as the one's mental and emotional health. As for the diet, I am more of a keto diet supporter but I don't want to put down vegetarians. However, sugar (carbs) is the main culprit why people are generally unhealthy. I am not even on a strict keto diet but I was able to lose weight and my blood sugar became normal.
One person has no sense of humour.
I really have a problem when you have really expensive Shure mic and your mouth is like half an inch away from it. What's the deal. That microphone can pick up a rats fart at 20 ft away. Get your mouth away from that mic... dude.
