I find the best thing to do is to just create the wallet, put a little money in it and then delete and recover it many many times over and over until it is an ingrained habit. Being able to recover a wallet I find gives confidence and reduces fear.

Not only useful when fleeing a country. It can also be a viable solution for someone with a lifestyle that prevents them from having a perfectly secure place to store a seed phrase. Having the keys as words opens a whole world of creative ways to store them. I created a poem with my words and a pattern to recover them. No one having the poem alone could retrieve my seed

Nice, but with both of those methods, the issue is with losing either PDF, or that faux seed phrase taken off you or lost. Lose THAT and you remembering a pattern and a word are useless to you.

Encrypt it and keep it in many locations. For further entropy, create 20 pdf grids, unique name for each pdf, only you know the real one. Zip and encrypt all 20 together. Store the file on as many physical and cloud storage devices as you like.

When at the border wallets website I was operating under the incorrect pretense I was supposed to plug my current seed phrase (my hhw one) and so nothing made sense. Is sparrow used this way considered a "cold wallet" since it doesn't (or at least isn't supposed to) store your private key? But your key IS reconstructed and loaded into memory at one point and therefor could possibly leak or not properly deleted or get copied by some sort of hack, couldn't it? it's not airgapped like it would be using the PSBT method. It does seem like your private key would be relatively safe this way, but I wonder where this falls on the security spectrum if someone was going to hold a significant amount of BTC and use this method as a substitute for a hardware wallet? Maybe it's on par with using a HW wallet in non-airgapped mode? I realize the intent is to use this method as a short term work around for a special circumstance but people may be tempted to use this as a substitute for an HW wallet....
This is not meant for long term storage, just a paranoid way to cross a border. Once you recover you bitcoin when safe, you can put your bitcoin wherever you think is safest.
The second seed phrase selected with the pattern + 1 word is just a BIP39 compliant seed phrase. It just gives a method to remember the real seed phrase without remembering all the words. If you wanted to store the real seed phrase 12 words (11 words plus the 1 word), you could theoretically restore that to any wallet that supports the derivation path (which looks to be m/84'/0'/0) and Native Segwit (though you can change both those things to suit your needs). So, if you like the idea but are concerned, save the real seed phrase stamped in metal somewhere very, very safe just so you have it in case border wallets and sparrow shit the bed. I would also verify that I can restore the real seed to at least a handful of mainstream wallets before I would do this. That said, it's neat, but not for me. Not now anyways. Hope this helps.

I think the main benefit is that you can store the seed anywhere digital, like Google Drive or Dropbox, without the danger of someone sweeping your funds. Ideally you want multiple copies of it. Only you will know what to do with it.

When I follow along with Sparrow 1.7.6 - the phrase generated from the pattern has words 6/9 and 7/8 inverted, making "harvest" an invalid 12th word. Is this a (serious) bug or did you change the selection pattern order in post production? 12:48 - your pattern selection; 13:42 - generated words after hitting OK
Well spotted. There was a bug in 1.7.5 which "read" the cells from left to right, instead of picking them out individually. This was detailed in the release notes for 1.7.6, which was released very shortly after 1.7.5 and included the patch.
The main purpose of this is for temporary use when escaping a dire situation in which physical confiscation is likely. In that window you're banking on your brain being more reliable than NOT getting searched. As soon as you reach safety, it's best to create a properly secured backup.
I don't see the point. You still need to have either one of those files at hand. In the beginning I thought the additional word that you have to remember would somehow be the key to regenerate the grid. That would have been interesting. But I see that's not the case.
I see the main benefit being you can store the seed to generate your grid literally anywhere (including digital storage on a computer, phone or the cloud) and have no real risk of anyone stealing your funds if they find it
The software will forever be available on the internet just like bitcoin is. Although it won't be updated, but the latest version will always be there for you to use

Hey Ben. BorderWallets are the way to go, but have you figured out how to set/get a BorderWallet onto a hardware wallet like ColdCard as the default wallet? The only way, that I have figured out, is to use a Sparrow hot wallet and then import that into a ColdCard.
The way to do this would be to follow Ben's tutorial to generate your Border Wallets Entropy Grid, then your 11-cell pattern, then calculate final word/checksum. Then write down the seed phrase and import it into Coldcard via that seed phrase. For recovery later if you then delete the file, you keep your Entropy Grid recovery mnemonic which regenerates the grid, memorise your 11-cell pattern (including cell selection order), and final word.

If the bad guys catch you, they sit you in a chair without a seat and they start kicking you in the balls (like 007) finally you will say you pattern, even say your grandmother's name... What's the point of carrying a paper decoy? Just a waste of money. Put the seed phrase on a cloud so you can access it anywhere in the world without anyone taking the paper away from you at a border.

Any of those files is found in you, and it shows you obviously have a hidden bitcoin wallet there, the 5USD wrench attack could be used. You need to remember the whole procedure: the drawing, with the order in which you selected cells, plus the top-right corner, plus a last word, plus how to do everything with Sparrow Wallet. Also, you are tied to Sparrow now, the recovery must be done with that tool. I honestly think it is much easier, stealthy and universal to just generate a 12-word seedphrase, invent a story with them and memorize it.
You seem to have missed Ben explaining the part about retaining the grid's 12-word Recovery Phrase (which looks and works like a regular seed phrase). This allows you to retain deniability. You could also use different passphrases to get around a wrench attack. If you're more comfortable keeping your 12 words in plain text backup and memorising it, do that. But evidence suggests we are far better at memorising patterns than words over time.

Passphrase is obviously another great option. That said, just because I make a video on an alternative way of doing things it must be a "paid shill"? Brutal. The main difference here would be if you store a seed somewhere, a non-complex passphrase can be brute forced. In this example, you can store a seed with no indication it's to a border wallet, and brute forcing it would be impossible even IF someone thought it might be a border wallet. They might generate the grid but would have no idea about your pattern or checksum. Tradeoffs and personal preference.

While I initially thought this was a great idea....after watching the whole video I realized that unless I was missing something, I really didn't see how this was any better than using a passphrase because I just don't see how anyone could brut force a good Passphrase. It would take a LONG LONG TIME unless it was a typical dictionary word and someone just happened to try it and "got lucky". Anyone who uses passphrases knows that IT MUST BE THE EXACT Word or phrase including any special characters, etc. That combination is INFINITE. And the person trying to BRUT FORCE it would have to go through the process of trying EVERY POSSIBILITY (which is IMPOSSIBLE) and each time they TRY.....they are in fact CREATING a new passphrase wallet which would be EMPTY. Even if someone were to see my 24 Seed Words....I don't see ANY POSSIBILITY of them EVER Guessing my Passphrase. Not in a million years....and it doesn't have to be a complicated Passphrase. Just complicated enough. Trying to prevent losing your crypto is complicated enough. I really think using a passphrase is the Best option unless someone can better explain why not. Either way.......keep bring us the ideas!!! It is still appreciated because you just never know which one will be a Home Run.

I have 1.7.6 and it works fine so, yes, it is either something he posted or you mistyped. Either way it should be easy to sort out.

Why do you trust web wallets? What makes these wallets verifiable?
It's not a web wallet. Both Sparrow and Border Wallets are open source - you can inspect the code base for yourself.
A sophisticated thief would know to make a grid. But then they would have no idea of your pattern. Bravo.

If you only had to remember a pattern... but it is: a pattern, the order in which you drew it, and additional word, and the whole procedure.
@@zeycus You have a decoy wallet on you that maybe contains $100 dollars (like Ben said in his video) and your attacker - if your words are discovered in the first place - is gone. But remembering the procedure? That's a cinch and has good UX. But if you think you're the kind of person who'd struggle to replay the pretty simply procedure, though. don't use it. This is a tool designed for those who need it and will find a pattern and a word easier to remember over time than 12 non-contiguous words.
This is completely pointless. Why not just have a seed somewhere and memorize a passphrase? In both instances you aren't storing bitcoin in your head, you only have part of the info memorized to recover your BTC. Wow, I'm dumbfounded. This must be a paid shill to promote Sparrow's new dumb feature.

Passphrase is obviously another great option. That said, just because I make a video on an alternative way of doing things it must be a "paid shill"? Brutal.
The main difference here would be if you store a seed somewhere, a non-complex passphrase can be brute forced. In this example, you can store a seed with no indication it's to a border wallet, and brute forcing it would be impossible even IF someone thought it might be a border wallet. They might generate the grid but would have no idea about your pattern or checksum.

@@BTCSessions I don't agree with the paid shill part. I think you bring us a lot of good ideas that we otherwise would not know about. While I initially thought this was a great idea....after watching the whole video I realized that unless I was missing something, I really didn't see how this was any better than using a passphrase because I just don't see how anyone could brut force a good Passphrase. It would take a LONG LONG TIME unless it was a typical dictionary word and someone just happened to try it and "got lucky". Anyone who uses passphrases knows that IT MUST BE THE EXACT Word or phrase including any special characters, etc. That combination is INFINITE. And the person trying to BRUT FORCE it would have to go through the process of trying EVERY POSSIBILITY (which is IMPOSSIBLE) and each time they TRY.....they are in fact CREATING a new passphrase wallet which would be EMPTY. At some point, they would need to evaluate the RISK/REWARD and they would find they are completely WASTING THEIR TIME because........for all they know........there may not have ever been a Passphrase wallet created in the first place so they could be searching for something that doesn't even exist (until they actually create it.....with a ZERO Balance. I have created MANY MANY 24 Word Seeds over the past 6 years....NONE of which had a Passphrase wallet....until very recently. Even if someone were to see my 24 Seed Words....I don't see ANY POSSIBILITY of them EVER Guessing my Passphrase. Not in a million years....and it doesn't have to be a complicated Passphrase. Just complicated enough. Trying to prevent losing your crypto is complicated enough. I really think using a passphrase is the Best option unless someone can better explain why not. Either way.......keep bring us the ideas!!! It is still appreciated because you just never know which one will be a Home Run.
@@mmm1x Using a Passphrase is BY FAR easier and safer in my opinion....and Even if your seed words are out in the open for anyone to see.....please explain how anyone....including a super computer would EVER guess the INFINITE combinations of Letters, Numbers, Characters that can be used to create a Passphrase wallet and the length of the Passphrase can be Quite Long making it even more complicated. You can create an INFINITE number of Passphrase wallets for a Single 24 word seed which means it would be a complete waste of time trying to BRUT FORCE Attack a Seed Phrase because you wouldn't even know if an actual Passphrase Wallet even exists yet. There are likely millions of seed words that never had a Passphrase wallet generated.
As a modern hobo with no fixed abode, this for me is the best way to store my sats longterm.
