I've had mine for over forty years. I converted it to electric operation six years ago with a 1hp Baldor 120 vac motor. Works great! The only thing I did was replace the return spring six years ago. I split 5 cords a year. I don't know about copycats, but to me Super Split is king. A GREAT machine! Shalom/gw
Very informative and accurate video. Bought my J in 2015, added a hitch, and have loved it. Only issue is pullback sometimes. Lube the roller bearing occasionally, helps, plus keeping the beam clean.
Without a doubt, the best video I've seen using this splitter. Showed all the tricks you have learned. Thanks....very helpful. Think I'll add one of these to my operation.
Great video, thx vm !! The depth and detail was very helpful as I am about to order a super split. You’ve helped confirm my decision to go with the SS. I’m retiring soon and am looking forward to keeping busy and pulling more firewood out of my 80 acre ADK woodlot for myself and perhaps a few neighbors. I applaud your ingenuity with regard to the add ons you incorporated to optimize your setup. Well done, Sir !!
Just when I thought I had seen all the SS videos, I searched for more and yours popped up. Glad I did because it is very informative as to what I can expect when I receive mine on Monday the 15th. I ordered the J model on January 6th and was told by Paul it would be around an 8 week wait or so, due to a back order delay on manufacturing due to the events of this past year. Anyway, I didn’t order the larger 42x46 production table as I am able to make mine for around the 3rd of the cost as to what the company sells them for. I do like your idea of adjustable support legs and will work off your idea. I’m in SE Michigan where we have an abundance of maple oak and elm. I’ve got a buddy who has a former co worker that drops off logs from their county yard where they have their tree clearing drop off.I’m selling firewood as side business to keep me busy as a retiree. Great video! Have a great weekend!
Good video. Ours is now 15 years old. I added additional return springs. The only problem I've ever had (happened twice early on) was when a heavy round with a fork in it lifted up and fell over backward on the spline shaft when it was fully extended, knocking the end of the spline below the pinion gear. It makes a terrible racket. Both times I shut it down quick, then you have to pull the allen head bolts to free it up. On recent examination the pinion gear and shaft are still in great shape. I usually split about 10 cords a year unless I hire out to clean up storm damage. It's about time to replace the original belts on ours soon. I added a tow hitch also but removed the leg and put a swivel jack on it further up. They really are amazing machines.
That's a sweet splitter... looks like your return springs are not strong enough to pull back.. also I found that changing out the roller bearings for a piece of hard wood seems to slide better.. great content keep em coming!!
had someone on one of my vids say I should look at the SuperSplitter and that how I found this vid. Good overview, explanation and extra tips - appreciate that. If only it had a lift, I'd be pulling out my wallet. LOL.
Good job on your video… I ordered one and I am hesitating because it’s going to be $600 for shipping…. I really had to think hard about how much I want one…. Your display made my decision… it’s a yes…thanks!
I’m in the same boat. Shipping from Massachusetts to Washington state isn’t cheap unfortunately. Was going back and forth but will place the order today.
@@brandong6242 I recently did a video with the owner Paul McCann. He mentions in the video there is a co-op in your area that sells them. Oregon Wood Co-op I believe. May be an option to consider 👍
Hi - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Very informative video. I would love to have a SuperSplit but the company has no plans to export to the British Isles - I imagine due to different Health & Safety laws governing firewood making machinery. I therefore just watch them on UA-cam and dream!
I saw this video and I'm sold. I hope there's not as much of a backlog as one of the other viewers posted. But that's not what I am posting for. I see you are quite handy, I myself am a retired fabricator and maintenance Machinist for a south eastern Eastern Massachusetts company and as such I used to use a certain material where metal on metal was a problem. Have you considered replacing your roller bearing from under the ram, with a small piece of UHMW? If you are not familiar with it, its used in the food processing industry and its very reasonably priced and you could just make a small block and drill a hole to mount it in place of your current bearing. McMaster Carr sells it in various sizes and shapes. Just a suggestion. Great videos btw, keep 'em coming.
Excellent comment! Thank you. I am familiar with UHMW. I know someone who made a table for a SuperSplit out of it. I never thought of using it for the bearing. Interesting idea. Thanks for watching and commenting friend.
Great video! Something sounds like it’s rattling throughout the video. Wondering I’d it’s supposed to sound like that or something needs tightened? Asking to make sure I hear the correct sounds in mine! Thanks for the great video and info!
Hi I have the super splitter for 8 year now the are great. But I suggest not use grease for that Barron it’s to thick use WD40. And maybe take the Barron off and clean it good so it returns fast your the only video I see speed up the time you don’t have to they are very fast. Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks Bill. I think you’re right about the grease. In the owner interview/tour video the SS owner Paul said the same thing. I speed up video’s occasionally to get through the more monotonous parts quicker while still covering a lot of information and keep the total length more watchable. Thanks for watching and commenting 🤝
Your welcome. When that ram retracts with ease the Barron is working the way it should. But when you push it’s not rolling and you get a flat spot on the Barron and then you have to replace it I know I been there 😊
Hi buddy, Nick from the UK here. Great video and great splitter. I have a kinetic log splitter too and OMG i would not trade it for a hydraulic one EVER ! Unless i was getting a processor of course haha It would be cool to see what the internals on that look like as its much quieter than mine at running. You can see mine on my channel too. Anyways, first time viewer and recent subsciber, just going through all your videos now. Perhaps you could put all your videos from old to new in a playlist so one could binge watch them 😅 cheers buddy
Thanks Nick. If our check out my SuperSplitter playlist there is a two part SuperSplitter factory tour/owner interview. Those videos show the internals pretty decently. 👍
@BuildALot Acres yeah I'm making my way through all your videos 😄 when I upload a video I put it in my from first to present day playlist so anyone can watch my boring videos 🤣 but I'll be checking them all out. Cheers bud.
When I bought mine the J’s and HD’s both had 75 lb flywheels. Now the HD’s have 90 lb flywheels. If I was buying one new today, I’d definitely go for the HD with extra wide production table. No question
On the 18" red oak and some others, it looks like you have a few goes at it to split. Can you hear that the motor is straining and you back off the ram? Or, is there some kind of torque control / safety or something that automatically backs it off? And, hello from Maine.
Some pieces do require multiple hits. It just stalls the flywheels and once they regain inertia you activate the ram again. No damage is done to the machine. They were designed this way. Thanks for stopping by friend.
The stacks in the woods are on top of wood pallets. The pallets are on runners made of small diameter logs so the pallets don’t rot out as quick and get good air flow underneath
How does this handle with pine? Im on the verge of ordering the model j but just want to be sure. We have a ton of ponderosa pine out here in Idaho... it gets pretty tough once it dries out.

And is the return spring robust enough? Looks a little light from here in my living room. =)=
You are correct. The return mechanism isn’t as strong as I’d like. Looking into new springs or stronger springs. I’ll also check the bottom bearings
What are you stacking your wood on top of?
The stacks in the woods are on top of wood pallets. The pallets are on runners made of small diameter logs so the pallets don’t rot out as quick and get good air flow underneath
Is there a safety stop on these to stop the ram mid stroke ?
When you release the handle it returns the ram.
