You crack me up, Andy. I continue to agree with most of your likes and dislikes. Which is why I am confused over your high regard for Metallica: Master of Cliches. From my perspective, the only thing they've managed to be "great" at is loudness and repetition, and I find their songs sophomoric at best. But yeah - The "bloody" Eagles... My favorite Eagles album, and see that a lot of fans agree, One Of These Nights is the perfect balance of song craft and creativity! Sorceror a great example of that.

Just listening to B side of Abbey Road alone will give an objective listener more than enough answers as to what they are all about, What an incredibly talented band. None would ever be considered a virtuoso with their respective instruments which i find as a musician myself particularly interesting. It was always about what was good for the song and in spite of their huge egos they didn't lose sight of that

Odd how everywhere else it’s been said Led Zeppelin sold 250 to 300 million. Unlike other bands, they chose not to sell many songs as singles. They were more innovative, & more bands & genres have sampled them. How do The Beatles have a difference of possible sales of 300 to 600 million? That’s a huge difference to not know for sure.
It’s a safe bet that Zeppelin’s worldwide sales exceed 300 million. Then we have to consider downloads/streams, etc. Their overall sales far exceed RIAA certified numbers, for sure.
Not sure where you got your stats. A few reasons why The Rolling Stones are the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World: The Rolling Stones have amassed the most top-10 albums (38) in the history of the Billboard chart, including nine Number 1s. Also, on the charts, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have 23 top 10 singles, including eight Number 1 singles. The Rolling Stones are the only artists to top the UK Album Charts in six different decades. The Rolling Stones are the highest-grossing live music act of all time, collecting over $2.5 billion according to Billboard. The Rolling Stones togue and lips logo is the most iconic in Rock.
Yeah I remember hearing the Eagles og version that was the them to the Hitchhikers guide. Im not sure it's totally the same but it is certainly based on that song. Whats funny is it works great for the HHGTTG. But it's a Terrible eagles song.

I find it ironic that you love heavy music, & have never explored Queen's first three albums. Which are much heavier fare. Especially Queen Two. The second album. Circa 1973-74.
The Stones were past their prime when "Tattoo You" came out, and I can see thinking Exile is overrated. Try the late 60's stuff like "Beggar's Banquet" and "Gimme Shelter."
Fistful of metal is my favorite Slayer album, Dave Mustaine really pushed new boundaries with his drumming on that one! Pantera really screwed up when they fired him looking back at how successful he has become.
Crazy hey. Can name 20 stones and 2 by aerosmith Stones to me not influential but amaaaazing catalogue on songs n music. Exile boring? Ive only heard it in recent years and its an absolute masterpiece of a recording
I really liked U2 early on and must have played Live At Red Rocks to death back in the day. That delay effect on the guitar sounded so unique at the time. I've also got War and October. I saw them on the Unforgettable Fire tour and thought they were brilliant. Maybe surprisingly so ,I didn't like the Joshua Tree, I thougt at the time it sounded a little bit pompous and self important which is funny considering I like prog. When they started incorporating dance music into their sound on albums like Achtung Baby, I found it much more interesting. Queen, I've come to appreciate more over the years. Again loved them when they started, stuff like Now I'm Here etc. But then for me they turned into a bit of a joke, although their Live Aid performance was incredible. One of my problems has always been Brian May's guitar tone You know the one, first heard on the solo of Killer Queen, and heard to maximum irritation on A Kind Of Magic. Resistance is futile though, since their reputation has been revised in the same way Abba has. As you say Andy AC/DC are just primal rock n roll. I could watch the video for Let There Be Rock on a loop until the end of time. Saw them a few times back in the day (unfortunately never with Bon). The first tine at Donnington in 81 was almost a religious experience. Unfortunately at Donnington 84 they had to follow Van Halen who were on fire that day. I saw Eagles at the Hop Farm in 2011, they headlined the Friday night. They started with Hotel California, and I thought what confidence to start with probably their most well known song. It backfired though, literally half the audience fucked off after one song and went to watch the Human League, I almost wish I had as well. I do love One Of These Nights though, one of the best pop/rock songs ever written. I love the Stones and think the run of albums from Beggars Banquet to Exile are the foundation stones of modern rock. I had exactly the same problem as you with Exile when I first heard it, the production sounded muddy and muffled. But it's one of those albums that suddenly clicks and once it does there's no going back. Finally Andy when you talk about the NWOBHM you never mention Saxon. Wheels Of Steel is a classic album and their first album is even a bit proggy in places. I wonder whether some of the uncoolness might down to them supposedly being the inspiration for Spinal Tap.
I kind of agree about Queen. They started to be a little bit lazy after ANATO. But always some great tracks on each and every one of their albums. Somebody to love, Champions, Mustapha, Don't stop me now, radio Ga Ga, Show must go on, etc. Even Flash, the single is good...
The problem with the Eagles is that a good chunk of their album sales come from country music fans who also happen to like a few country-ish rock bands.
Most excellent video I'm gonna be a little blasphemous right on the onset and it may be that my natural instinct is to push against the majority so I own albums by all these bands I think AC/DC in my humble opinion as two great albums back in black and thunderstorm as for me I think all the other albums have one or two maybe three good songs songs on them and the rest rest or fillers U2 has two albums the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum album after these are crap and a sell out with Metallica I think anything after the Black Album shows the failure of success when it comes to the Beatles I'm a great fan of the second half of the Beatles starting with revolver Aerosmith I think the first two albums were the greatest and their second album Get Your Wings nudges the first one out because of their cover of train kept the Roland which is my favorite Aerosmith song The Eagles I like the original Eagles best and they were country rock Led Zeppelin I love all the albums I really enjoyed towards the end in through the outdoor really showed The Genius of John Paul Jones the most underrated member of the band and I feel like he is The Rock what's the band stood on you're going to hate this but I feel like for no other reason then the evidence of the longevity and ability to stay relevant the Rolling Stones of probably the greatest band in Rock and Roll history do I like everything they did no but who else after 60 years in the business steel command the concerts attendance that they can
I saw a musicologist describe before and after the Beatles--he was an older man and the interview was in the late 60s or early 70s. His analysis of the Beatles was really well capsulized in this one quotation: "Before The Beatles, pop/rock and roll music was essentially just ritualistic dance music. After the Beatles, it was art." Yup.
this is an apt assessment to be sure, and, there's nothing wrong with ritualistic dance music for anyone getting ruffled. Humans need to come together and dance, and we're losing that too now to our detriment...

@@nigelbailey4704 so for me i cannot pick a single as mood dependent but that stretch from Beggars to Exile and then Some Girls and Tattoo . Space capsule this is rock n roll nothing better shit there. And that distinction between rnr and rock is important. Music lost some funk and soul when it lost the roll. And you can be all holy technically genius but if you have no roll its just missing the elemental.
You're too close to the camera. Unless you are Brad Pitt or Ricky Martin, people don't want someone's face to be right smack in their faces. Follow my advice and you will have more viewers and subscribers. Bye for now.
Pink Floyd - yes, well. I was going out with someone who was mad for Floyd. OMG. Saw them a fair bit, but oh, they were self-indulgent. And for the concert goer, they didn't connect with the audience. They came on, played the music and went home. A long time later I saw Radiohead. The opposite. They talked to the audience, mostly Thom, and they communicated. You felt part of it. AC/DC right on. Never seen them live, but I'd really love to, even now. Led Zeppelin, saw them early, at the Bath Festival. Even then the charisma was off the scale. And every member of LZ were the best at what they did. A lot of it was that Page and Jones knew what they were doing when they started, and they knew how to get there. Eagles - I prefer Joe Walsh on his own. Queen were great, but only because of Freddie. Without him, they were a good band, but not great. Went to London and saw the pre-auction show at Sothebys. I would have taken that house, if I had the money. Which I don't. The Beatles started it all. Without them none of the others would have existed - not just (just?) because of their music, but because they brought the money back into popular music.
Where was number 3? Also, his lack of appreciation for Pink Floyd comes from someone who is not educated in music. The Sex Pistols were a short-term gimmick, Pink Floyd have been going for decades and have influenced almost every band since, especially the indie guitar bands and psychedelia and even funk bands like Funkadelic especially with stage presentation with projected screens and light shows.
I was very sceptical about this guy and this video confirmed it. First off that top he's wearing is horrific and says a lot about the wearer i.e. no style sense whatsoever. Secondly as a long-term U2 fan his part about U2 was laughable. He says they should have stopped after Joshua Tree. Yet they go on to make arguably one of the greatest albums ever in Achtung Baby. He also claims he met a guy around the time of Achtung Baby working on the song Beautiful Day. Well Achtung Baby was released in 1991 and Beautiful Day was written in 1999/2000, so he's almost ten years off with his dates. So, I call bullshit. Also they have sold FAR more than 115M certified sales, it's more like £175M and 200 million claimed sales. Also, anyone who only owns one of U2s albums has no right making any comment about successful and important bands. Also, they were playing stadium long before the Joshua Tree. I appreciate you can't know a lot about all bands, but still do some research if you're going to go out into the public domain....full of shit this guy.
The opening theme for the TV series _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ was "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles (so the Wikipedia article on the same). You did hear correctly
It's a really proggy piece, and an outlier in their body of work. I love all their songs. They're mostly more similar to Hotel California than Journey of the Sorcerer.
@@MrOctober44 it's gonna be impossible to get anywhere near accurate figures. Even a sophisticated country like Japan didn't start counting record sales until 1989 - imagine how many "verified" sales the Beatles missed out on there. Things get even more crazy now that they count UA-cam & Spotify views. It's interesting to look at ranking lists, but I think we can only really compare bands that were subject to the same rules.
I can't stand Queen, either. Too pompous, too flashy, too theatrical. Hardly a rock band, despite Brian Mays' virtuoso guitar playing. Brit pop, more like it.
Aerosmith were the biggest surprise - and the absence of Bon Jovi. In Through the Out Door is my fave Zep album after Led Zep 2, but I love interesting keyboards - and what Jimmy Page played on ITtOD was exceptional, I thought. AC/DC bore me rigid, I'm afraid. The way they spoke about women in a '77 interview depressed me, and I never liked them from then on, though I DO like Bon Scott's voice.
Ok, here we have Andy’s questionable taste in Music front and center with his ongoing dismissal of the Stones! No other band has harnessed the forces of chaos as the stones did at the end of 60s early 70s (Monkey Man, Gimme Shelter, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch…come on man!) It really begs the question, should he be allowed to do this, do we need to raise concern with UA-cam? Who is it that decides these things anyway? All this prog and jazz rubbish he champions, just too many notes, fancy pants rhythms, I tell you. I have learned a fair bit though so, harumph😜
It is bizarre, this lack of connection some fans have with The Stones. Of course we aren't going to all gravitate towards the same artists, our ages, environments and our varied sensibilities will lead us to different musicians. But I've recently heard and read quite a few dismissals of The Stones, folks who don't see ANYTHING of value in their music. This is THE ROLLING STONES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT! Holy hell, man, with the insane variety of styles, genres, sonics and songwriting, you'd think there'd be something for pretty much everybody! Andy thought Exile On Main Street was extremely boring, so I guess it comes down to certain styles of music (Exile - with the heavy blues and country influence, raggedly recorded) not fitting into the listeners wheelhouse. For myself, as a lover of metal, rock, blues, soul, reggae, country (the old stuff) and even a lot of pop music, The Rolling Stones music, with Brian Jones, the stellar 70's material, and even the spottier 80's to now albums, encompass all that is great in rock and roll! Keith's riffs alone are nothing short of spectacular!
Lebowski cant stand the eagles, neither do i. I saw queen during the game tour and wasnt sold out. They seem much larger now than when they were touring.

I'm surprised Genesis didn't make this list. I know the Gabriel stuff is pretty niche but the Collins led Genesis shifted a lot of records, especially in the essential American market.
🌠Alright Andy Zappa....Good Video
You crack me up, Andy. I continue to agree with most of your likes and dislikes. Which is why I am confused over your high regard for Metallica: Master of Cliches. From my perspective, the only thing they've managed to be "great" at is loudness and repetition, and I find their songs sophomoric at best. But yeah - The "bloody" Eagles... And the Rolling Stones were only "okay" and you cited the same handful of songs I always felt were exceptional. I would have thought you'd put Achtung Baby over Joshua Tree, great as that is. Achtung Baby has bite and better variety. Anyway, I like your style, Andy! Best of luck with your channel.
27:17 “the bloody Eagles” -- This is the British version of the famous Big Lebowski scene: "Man, can you change the channel? I had a rough night and I hate the f**g Eagles"
Correct, the theme to the TV series The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy is indeed by the Eagles.
The track is “Journey of the Sorcerer” from the album “One of These Nights”
My favorite Eagles album, and see that a lot of fans agree, One Of These Nights is the perfect balance of song craft and creativity! Sorceror a great example of that.
Never knew this. Was the theme actually played by The Eagles? Or did it need to be re-recorded so accurately no one noticed. Like Mountains Nantucket Sleigh Ride on "World In Action"?
@@treff9226 The song One Of These Nights has a killer Don Felder guitar solo. Love that guy's guitar playing. Him and Joe Walsh were a great guitar duo.
Yepper do, Don seems to have played perfect solos on every damn Eagles song he was involved with! I can literally hear the entire solo from One Of These Nights in my head, without even thinking very hard about it - that's the mark of a great solo! Felder's solos have great dynamics, and they are just so melodically put together, perfect note choices! Killer tone, as well, and as you said, together with Joe Walsh - can't miss tag team of two highly skilled players, who always played for the song. Glad to see Don Felder get some love - nice mention!

Just listening to B side of Abbey Road alone will give an objective listener more than enough answers as to what they are all about, What an incredibly talented band. None would ever be considered a virtuoso with their respective instruments which i find as a musician myself particularly interesting. It was always about what was good for the song and in spite of their huge egos they didn't lose sight of that
ok andy i enjoyed your 2 videos ,one on the most important bands ever and now this one , so i think there is one video still left to do i think a completely subjective one -your top 10 personal favorite bands of all time, for which you should not in anyway receive any ridicule for, within reason you should not ,in practice? -well that maybe might not be the case lol but it would make for a good vid anyway and id look forward to knowing who your favorites are
Very well said about ACDC, #1 rock n roll band ever ACDC without a doubt, by a country mile
No way man
@jaccocornelisschutter8895 who's better then?
Led Zep sold over 300 million units 10 plus years ago !! I think you would find they are more around the 350 million mark today in album sales.
It’s a safe bet that Zeppelin’s worldwide sales exceed 300 million. Then we have to consider downloads/streams, etc. Their overall sales far exceed RIAA certified numbers, for sure.
@@BBaldwin I agree, he claimed something like 142 million, I don’t remember the exact low number. I think he definitely got his numbers wrong.

You should do a list based on British chart singles/ album sales…Just a thought…Oh yeah, I love the Bumble Bee influence top..
Reasonable idea, using UK sales would be more focused and perhaps more accurate. Also, the bloody Eagles wouldn't appear on it.
How can you not have A Day At The Races in your huge collection? BTW, all my vinyl LPs were stolen, and I have zero records now. But when I get my deck set up, A Day At The Races will be my first purchase

Cra. Zee. Dude. Never say never. You never know what you haven’t heard in the context that could make you see it hear it different maye
I find it ironic that you love heavy music, & have never explored Queen's first three albums. Which are much heavier fare. Especially Queen Two. The second album. Circa 1973-74.
I have explored them. I have even talked about the progginess in evidence on those albums.
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I am simply responding to what was expressly stated. Within this video. I guess I misunderstood.
ahhh...I was just talking about when i was a kid.
The Rolling Stones are OKAY????
Didn't seem to include # 3, but we all know it had to be The Carpenters. Though ABBA also possible, I guess....
Hang on is this secretly an ACDC video?
Crazy hey. Can name 20 stones and 2 by aerosmith

Exile boring? Ive only heard it in recent years and its an absolute masterpiece of a recording
I was surprised ABBA wasn't in there.
Or the bee gees?
It was interesting that John Lydon liked Floyd for the fact they disliked Thatcher and swore.
I can’t edit but I think it was Mary Whitehouse not Thatcher at the time of Animals. PF did make reference to Thatcher later on on the Final Cut.
I think ABBA has sold 150 million albums as well:)
Every other list i have seen shows Led Zeppelin has sold more than Queen...
You're so wrong. The most successful band of all time is Laurence of Olivier, we all know that!
Pink Floyd ?
Yes, it is the theme - Douglas Adams did that on purpose.
The problem with the Eagles is that a good chunk of their album sales come from country music fans who also happen to like a few country-ish rock bands.
Live Under a Blood Red Sky by U2 was pretty good.
Where are the Rutles?
You missed out number 3, Andy, which has me guessing: Bee Gees perhaps, Abba, Fleetwood Mac?
The Eagles...they are there
Why did you go from number four to number two? Who's number 3????
They’re all still soundtracks to generations

The Beatles were alright, but I prefer Bach. 🤘🍁
I agree, Sebastian Bach (with Skid Row) rocks out - incredible vocal range! Good choice!
Elvis, Buddy, Chuck, Fats, Little Richard, Everly Brothers just ritualistic dance music??? I don't see it! Or maybe you're just talking about bands.
this is an apt assessment to be sure, and, there's nothing wrong with ritualistic dance music for anyone getting ruffled. Humans need to come together and dance, and we're losing that too now to our detriment...

@@nigelbailey4704 so for me i cannot pick a single as mood dependent but that stretch from Beggars to Exile and then Some Girls and Tattoo . Ha ha...after all the stick I got for not incuding them I thought I'd try and get away with not putting a pick of them up and see if anyone noticed...
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I thought it was Roger Waters and his current band.
Going to see later Floyd was like the same experience of seeing an orchestra
Where was number 3? Also, his lack of appreciation for Pink Floyd comes from someone who is not educated in music. The Sex Pistols were a short-term gimmick, Pink Floyd have been going for decades and have influenced almost every band since, especially the indie guitar bands and psychedelia and even funk bands like Funkadelic especially with stage presentation with projected screens and light shows.
Most of Pink Floyd's music is lullabies for stoners.
I've hated Queen since I was a kid in the 70s.
Me too, it's just all too bombastic for me. I don't even class them as a proper rock band 😄. They were good at Live Aid though.
Saw Aerosmith very disappointed
The opening theme for the TV series _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ was "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles (so the Wikipedia article on the same). You did hear correctly
I love that tune
It's a really proggy piece, and an outlier in their body of work. I love all their songs. They're mostly more similar to Hotel California than Journey of the Sorcerer.

Led zeppelin will be the greatest band ever, the beatles had a lot of rubbish, childish, out of tune, nasal garbage
Ok, here we have Andy’s questionable taste in Music front and center with his ongoing dismissal of the Stones! No other band has harnessed the forces of chaos as the stones did at the end of 60s early 70s (Monkey Man, Gimme Shelter, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch…come on man!)
It really begs the question, should he be allowed to do this, do we need to raise concern with UA-cam? Who is it that decides these things anyway?
All this prog and jazz rubbish he champions, just too many notes, fancy pants rhythms, I tell you.
I have learned a fair bit though so, harumph😜
Fancy pants is my forte. John McLaughlin 'The Rolling Stones are actual pants' JM knows....

@@AndyEdwardsDrummerSince you already decided on not liking The Stones, we probably won't convince you anyway, but let me say Exile is a vibe.
