When shipsterns is BIG its suicide. I have seen waves where it barrels on the bottom 3 feet while it closes out at about 12 feet before it just coils over and 30 foot of water lands on your head

I tried to watch this contest and couldn't get into it. Those waves were too small to tow into. That should have been a paddle ONLY contest then it probably would have been worth watching. Nevertheless, has anyone else noticed how much better contests are with scoring accuracy, announcing, etc, when it's NOT being ran by the WSL!? Red Bull should take over the WSL tour. They can make that tour so much better!

Interesting that those survival jackets have a deflate feature to allow diving again, shows how at the mercy of the ocean big wave riders are, an inflated life jacket is even futile unless you can swim out of the impact zone.
Great Vlog Koa. You are extremely blessed to have such a close group of friends who surf for a living and travel with you. Way more than you even understand. The vast majority of the people in this world, even in 1st world countries, have really awful lives. I live in Baltimore and there are guys on my street corner who have been dealing drugs since they were 7. They have no dads and their moms are addicts. They've all lost close friends in their teens. They have absolutely no hope for the future. People here fight to survive every day and the kids grow up in violence. And a lot of America is like this now. And then to come home to a nice house on the North Shore of Oahu...your life is just ridiculous. You, Billy, and Nate are so incredibly fortunate. Sure there are fights there in Hawaii, but you dont have to worry about getting murdered like you do here. Never forget to be grateful for what you have.

In Oz when we say "slab" we are referring to the actual break itself..
We don't have coral reef breaks and our (non sand bottom) breaks
are made from giant "slabs" of rock close to our coastline.

Needs expression session before the comp, then repêchage round so ur not travelling all that way for one heat only! The another expression sesh pre or post final. All the guys there could win it, just need a chance to get in the groove so they can all blitz it!
I have been pushed deep and held down, with no idea which way was up, just darkness and the hand of god pressing me down.... the only thing that saved me was at one point my board yanked my leash letting me know which way was up...

that has to be insanely frustrating, ive had to battle tow and paddle in free surf and that is what it is, but to do that in a contest just seems so damn wrong. wsl does a much better job, at least from what i know of it.
