  • I'm making a game based off of my favorite survival games like Minecraft, Ark, Valheim, and Terraria in a style similar to Tears Of The Kingdom using Unreal Engine 5. This is my first video showing my process of development on the game.

    That already looks fairly incredible!
    Can I ask you, and everyone who feels like answering, for a tip?
    I would like to start developing games just for fun, and I really can't decide if going for unreal or unity.
    I like how unity looks and it kinda feels more familiar, but I'm fascinated by blueprints (even though all the things like actors and such don't feel familiar at all) and intrigued by the potential of unreal (which I may never be able to use at full power though).
    I have little coding exp, definetly zero skills in modelling (so I think unreal could fall off since my models wouldn't be that good) and I would like to go for a project like yours: a 3D open world action rpg with as many things as possible (enemies with different behaviours, day-night cycle, procedural generated terrain, underwater-air exploration, underground dungeons and so on).
    I have no deadlines and I just really want to learn one engine and stick with it (at least for some time).
    I'm sorry to bother anyone here but I felt like this was a good place to ask for help and I'm very lost on my choice. I know I should try them both (I only did microscopic projects in unity 2D) and I probably will, but I would like to go already convinced on one and go full immersion for experimentation and fun.
    Thanks in advance if you decided to answer

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  2 місяці тому

      Unless you are making a 2d game or you absolutely NEED toon shading for a project you should probably use unreal especially since it is more beginner friendly from my experience. If you don't know how to do something just look it up online you can usually find what you need on UA-cam or google to learn. You will waste more time trying to get around not knowing how to do something than you will just learning it.

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  5 місяців тому +1

      Ya I’m using a procedural mesh component for each terrain chunk.

      @@phoenixbaker4984 Thanks for the fast response! I'm also making my own terrain using PMC. One last question, but are you generating PMC on a background thread or game thread? Thanks!

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  5 місяців тому +1

      I don't know much about different threads yet since this system is still pretty early and doesn't have very good optimization yet. For me I'm just adding new mesh sections in a c++ actor so whatever unreal does by default is what I'm doing.@@aprivatechannel1152

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  5 місяців тому

      There was a lot of different places that I learned from, but this video is pretty close to what I made to help you get an idea of what I did ua-cam.com/video/5zlfJW2VGLM/v-deo.html not sure I can make a tutorial though since I'm focusing on the game and devlogs right now. The main idea though is that I create layers of 4x4 chunk areas getting smaller around the player by first creating templates for where the chunks should go then checking if they are in the same place as the currently rendered chunks then all of the rendered chunks that don't match, I move to where the templates that don't match are and regenerate the mesh there. I also have a material that sinks the terrain based on custom primitive data for each chunk so that you can't see the larger chunks overlapping the smaller ones.

  • @gameworkerty
    @gameworkerty 3 місяці тому

    how are you pulling the biome data out of the material for grass and tree placement if it's calculated on the GPU?

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  3 місяці тому

      I use perlin noise in c++ to get the biome value at any given point and use that to place grass and for the vertex color on the mesh then the terrain material uses that for the biomes.

  • @lodewijk.
    @lodewijk. 4 місяці тому

    Do you plan on writing a custom stylized shader? The games you're inspired by have a very distinct visual look so I'd love to see your take

    • @phoenixbaker4984
      @phoenixbaker4984  4 місяці тому

      Well unreal engine doesn't support anything really custom out of the box from what i can tell so im just using the base shading types in the unreal material editor.
