You can argue that Tobey's did the same in Spider-Man 2, but he still kept Mary Jane by his sides, thus making him vulnerable to hostages if she ever got caught (which in fact did happen several times in the 3 movies). If he was truly responsable, the right answer was to leave her.
Spider-Man actually presents himself as really annoying and talkative to his villains in the comics. He’s edgy, cocky and constantly jokes around. It’s a huge part of his character the Raimi films failed to portray properly. I like to think the jokes help Spidey keep calm while confronting his villains; they also hide the tragedy and pain of Peter Parker’s personal life. No one would think that this talkative superhero would ever be a withdrawn, nerdy high school/college kid.

Imagine if in endgame they make you think captain marvel will kill the bad guy but she gets her ass kicked then the bad guy does this monologue then out of nowhere 2:38 starts playing and a piece of web hits the guys face. He then pulls it off just to see Spider-Man swinging over to him very fast. Then 2:50 starts playing and with no time to react Spider-Man hits him with whatever the guy’s weakness is.
Tobey was the best Peter. He was nerdy, he was awkward, he was dorky, pretty much perfect, but just a touch too goofy. Andrew was the best Spider-Man. He was cocky, he was sarcastic, and he was funny. Maybe a little too much so in some scenes. Tom is the best representation of the two of them. He's nerdy, cocky, awkward, sarcastic, dorky, and funny. Not too over the top Spider-Man, and not too over the top Peter Parker.
