What I love about this piece is how well it fits the story. It has a distinctly clockwork like feel to it, which represents the key scientific themes in the story, although they aren't modern by any standard, more of a steampunk idea. The basey triplets at the end of every phrase are unfamiliar and dystopian, which is an absolutely genius way of demonstrating how the setting is very similar to ours but has many distinct, weird aspects to it. The bit in the "middle" is far more reminiscent of your standard quest-style shows and movies, and yet sounds almost angelic with its choral music, like a higher power is at work throughout the show (which, brilliantly, is the part where the Subtle Knife appears in the visual theme). This, tied in with the odd setting and the fact that it is very steampunk in nature, creates a very cleverly done theme. This is all just my interpretation, and it may be completely different to how the composer actually intended it to be, but I love it all the same, cause if nothing else, it's still a beautiful piece of music. Friends: So what have u been listening to in lockdown? Me: u know just rap music and stuff.. In my head: the His Dark Materials theme tune on repeat for hours..
Sounds so mysterious yet, epic and wondrously adventuress. Gotta say, I haven’t heard a good orchestra theme in a long time, that is of course, since game of thrones.
The soundtrack is all so good, reminds me of ‘Kara’s Theme’ in Detroit: Become Human, I can’t believe how well they pulled off the show after seeing it all. I’m a long-standing fan of the series after the books and was one of the few who actually hoped for them to continue the movies, knowing how it was supposed to end but this was a better outcome, the cast, especially Coulter, were extremely well chosen 👏
As soon as I heard those female vocals, I thought "This sounds like something Lorne Balfe would make". And I was right! The man, the legend from Assassin's creed.
I really appreciate the symbolism, which is the foundation for good fantasy. Otherwise its cheap shit. Like the magicians. Ugh. His Dark Materials deals with topics like childhood abuse, abandonment, pain, loss, grief, injustice, love, freedom and more. And never in a black and white way. I hate shows where obstacles are made extra hard to overcome - its not necessary. good plots work different, and the element of surprise is never missing. I am an absolute enthusiast when it comes to other worlds and travelling between them. Having a show that has not only that but complex characters, amazing actors and stunning cinematography - I dont know what to say, except that I enjoyed the first two episodes of the 3rd season immensly. And seeing Helen McCrory on ep 2 made me cry. Just fucking brilliant and beautiful!

I'd like for someone to tell me if they don't think the Bear McCreary theme for AppleTV+'s Foundation doesn't sound oddly similar to this - and no, I don't mean identical, but thematically.
Very good show, great music - you really need a good sound system to appreciate it fully. After the sequels to the movie were a no go I was happy to see that this is happening, too bad without Daniel Craig anymore but James McAvoy is doing a great job too! Glad they didn't try to cram any SJW nonsense into this, as it often happens nowadays. Very anti big-government, if that's what You want Your kids to watch :D
@@rChaoz The book is called 'The Golden Compass' in the US, 'Northern Lights' in the UK and other regions. Honestly I prefer the former, it fits better with the sequels.
The naming is a bit complicated. The book series was originally going to be called The Golden _Compasses_ (referencing Paradise Lost: the implements used by God to draw the circles of creation) but was changed to His Dark Materials (also referencing Paradise Lost), which is where the TV show gets its name. The first book was titled Northern Lights but the US publisher, liking the rejected title and mistakenly believing it to mean the alethiometer, instead called it The Golden _Compass,_ which is where the film got its name. I would agree that the title fits better with the sequels (The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) if it were actually intended to refer to the alethiometer.

This theme is about the only thing truly "epic" about this series so far (half way through season 1). Inconsistent acting, odd, awkward moments that jar you out of your suspension of disbelief, plot holes the size of alternate realities that are never explained, sophomoric directing and actors who have been clearly miscast. It's just barely worth continuing on...but then I watched the entire season 1 of War of the Worlds, so the bar during the pandemic is indeed very low.
