Did you see when frierens clone grew her mana and attacked frieren with a monstrous black magic? Well.. This a least to me appears a lot with zoltraak.
Only 80 years ago, "ordinary attack magic" was an unstoppable killing attack that punched through the best defensive spells in existence like tissue paper. Defence magic can block it now, but it still punches through entire cliff faces worth of rock, and obliterates huge chunks of living flesh on contact. Zoltrak is no joke.
after watching this, I can't help but laugh at aura's pitiful attempt at fighting frieren. even if she didn't use her scale, her entire army would have been wiped out regardless. 😂
If she could have made Frieren use up more than half her mana taking out the army, then she could have won. She probably needed a bigger army. But based on Frieren saying that it was a "good thing" that Aura was arrogant enough to attempt to use her scales right away, instead of trying to wear Frieren down first, Frieren would have been at least a little bit inconvenienced if Aura had tried to do that instead.

The cubes are just the signature style of one animation artist Yutaka Nakamura. I think only some other animators follow the same style but not as much as he does. If you see cubes in anime it's very likely he's behind the animating of that scene. So this is not a strictly anime thing, just one artist that gets hired a lot for those action scenes.
So it seems like post-demon king age of magic was more of the sniper build of mages where they used zoltraak to try and do some piercing damage and be more mana efficient. But in the past (judging from how frieren fights herself) it was more on AOE damage with spells that covered massive ground.
The era of the demon-king was an era of magical warfare conducted by and against armies of magic wielding demons. AoE spells is exactly what humans would need to equalize the odds. The modern, peaceful era is one where most warfare is conducted by armies of humans fighting each other, each with only a handful of combat mages, and individual mages going on adventures with small parties and possibly dueling one another. So a lot more one-on-one combat, where accurate, focused, single target spells would be more efficient. Plus the addition of Zoltrak and flight to the human magical arsenal suddenly made the sniping tactic much easier to do and more viable as well.
When Richter is hit by the Sense Clone's hair, it's a callback to when Edel was analyzing the Sense Clone, saying that there were too ways that modern magic got through defense magic, either by breaking through it with overwhelming mass, or by slipping around gaps in the shielding, and then finding out that Sense's hair attack did both simultaneously. We see the Sense Clone's hair both breaking through Richter's rock wall AND going around it to hit him from behind at the same time.
Probably condensed hellfire. A black hole that size would have the mass of two earths, and the attracted mass would immediately bounce off the small singularity and explode, annihilating the planet. Black holes are real life magical objects of impossible power and destruction.

Then that little mirrors showed what's could be parts of reality broke apart. What's make senses if you can control gravity so you can control the reality (time and space). She's absurd powerful.

Think of Ubels spell that allows her to cut anything she believes she can cut, and there's another spell that SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Reflects any curese. It bypasses logic because it doesn't have to anyalze the magic in order to reflect the spell. Often this magic cannot be sensed as "magic" even though its caused by mana. Most people think this is a gravity spell of some sort that requires visual sight, and some sort of incantation that requires you to be stationary.
Exactly how Clone Frieren cast the final spell, and its nature, is left unclear. But it is a very, very advanced and powerful magic. Something so advanced that Fern couldn't even recognize it as magic, or detect the mana used to cast it. Whether this is because it actually doesn't use mana at all, or just that it uses mana in a way Fern is unable to detect because she isn't experienced at all in that level of magic, isn't said. But it also comes with a drawback. Frieren is left completely open to counterattack right after using it. Like her regular weakness in magic detecting after casting a spell is amplified massively after using this spell in particular, leaving a relatively huge window of vulnerability in which she cannot detect an incoming attack. This is probably why Frieren doesn't use this spell routinely, and it is a "last resort" option for her. If she uses this spell and it fails to immediately end the fight and/or she doesn't have companions covering for her in her period of vulnerability after it, she's basically dead. Real Frieren took advantage of this opening to fry Clone Frieren.

it's not basic magic, it's demon slaying magic, she's training Fern to specically kill demons, still holding a grudge.

全く同じはずだ。
つまりミミックにかじられてる間に 最大攻撃でぶっぱなせばいいんだ。
オリジナルのフリーレンと違って助けてくれそうなフェルンとかがいないんだから、ミミックにかじられたままの複製体が何かしらの最大級の攻撃魔法をぶっ放して周りがその巻き添えで死んでしまうというオチが見える。
