Like many of you probably, I’ve been seeing this vintage slip dress silhouette popping up in all kinds of styles. It’s caught my eye and I thought I’d give it a go making my own self drafted version!
The satin finish one definitely has more of an elegant and night time feel to it where as the floral cotton (ex bed sheet) dress is the perfect farmers market or picnic companion - best of both worlds really.
Hope you enjoy watching these beautiful garments come to life!

Literally got some material to make a dress like this and I was just going to wing it. So glad you made this video. This weekends sewing task!
Oh perfect!! Hope this tutorial helps ☺️☺️
So cute! Totally true about the two being day and night pieces!
Thank you! I have fabric laying around and was searching for a nice and easy dress in that style. Now I found your tutorial and it sounds really easy to follow. 😊
Both look fab, the cotton one can definately be dressed up or down. Even wedding day and night outfit. Very nice thank you.
Agreed! I literally was thinking the other day the floral one would be great for a wedding too
eternally obsessed with your videos, i come back year after year after year to follow your tutorials. They're so detailed and easy to follow, thank you for your generosity with knowledge sharing and making learning to sew your own wardrobe so accessible and easy!!!
omg i feel like you read mi mind, this is literraly what i need, was looking all over for a pattern like this yesterday and couldn't find it anywhere. I want to do a carrie costume for halloween ;)
Omg I love that idea!! Glad I could help 🤗
Perfect!! Just what I was looking for and you explain it so well. That looks beautiful on you.
I am new to sewing, I watch other YT sewers buy and use commercial patterns to sew clothes and seeing this technique, I am relieved it's not going to be expensive to sew my own clothes.
Lovely idea, can’t wait to try this one at the weekend. Thank you for sharing! 💗🥰
Love the beautiful pattern on the bed sheet💛 such a beautiful design 😊 You look lovely in your dresses😊
Thanks for this video! Very helpful to see someone sewing a dress like this. Your dresses turned out beautifully!
Anyone watching this for instructions just remember to hang your dress for 24h-48hrs before hemming as the skirt will likely stretch down on one side due to it being on the bias.🤗
Aah amazing!! I've been wanting to make a puff sleeve dress with this shape, you broke it down so well, especially all the measurements. Thank you!
Funny you say that! I was tossing up the idea to add sleeves but I'm thinking I keep an eye out for some other fabric to create a shorter version with puff sleeves too :)
I was JUST looking for bias cut garment videos to use on a plaid I have this is the best timing
omg i’ve been wanting someone to make an exact dress like this ahhhhhhh. ive been seeing them for months!!
Love love love this dress...very different from what you have made before ..thanks for posting x
Omg! Have been wanting to make this dress for a while. I was so close to just buying one but couldn't bring myself to as they are $80 + ! Can you believe that? This video is exactly what I need. I have a feeling this style dress is going to take over my summer wardrobe !
It's divine !
It was lovely to see your process! I made a similar dress a month ago, but with a ruffle detail on the outside and a zip
Thank you! Oh That sounds beautiful 😍😍
Great tutorial, I haven't realised that i can cut cotton on bias and the dress will be falling more smoothly 🤦 one learns every day. Thank you ❤
Thank you. Simple explanation, gr8 results
Super cute!
So excited! Haven’t even finished watching but already know I’m gonna make this
Too kind 🥺😘
Absolutely cannot wait to get home from work to try this dress! Thank you!
Haha yay!! You are so so welcome 😘
I love this dress thank you lovely!! Am on to my third iteration of this style xx
omg! I've been eagerly awaiting this since I saw it on your story!! So excited to make this.
Such a cute essential hey! Can’t wait to see how yours turns out ☺️
Yess! So keen to try this 👌🏻
This is amazing, thank you so much for this ❤️❤️
So beautiful 😍😍😍 I really want to try making this!
Great video! I did notice that it's a problem when the widest point (but) is the bottom width measure as that's the bottom of the dress and not where the but is. As i result I got a dress very tight around my widest point. It seemed that you made the bottom width a lot wider than the circumference of the widest point + 4 / 2. Would be super helpful to also hear your measurements to help with our own calculations for future tutorials
i had the same problem! i'm literally making this dress right now and when i cut the bottom of the dress it didn't fit me at all, had to change the measurements off the top of my head (i have no sewing experience so this was hard lol)
how did you solve this when making the dress for yourself??
find the distance from your waist to the widest part of your hip, down the front of your body. the top of the skirt will be half of your waist measurement. then, measure that waist-hip distance straight down. there, make the skirt half as wide as your hip measurement. then make the bottom of the skirt equally as wide as the widest part. you’ll end up with a fitted but nicely flowing bias cut skirt! i know explaining that in words is hard, hope it made sense
I have been looking at UA-cam videos searching for a good explanation for this pattern. I eventually found your video and you nailed it 👌. Thanks so much. Going to give it a try 😊
How did it go?
Perfect! 🦋 Thank you!❤️💃🔥
Magnifiques !!!.... Bravo !!!!...........
i absolutely love this tutorial and the dress turned out amazing, definitely going to try :))
Thank you so much, made my own dress and you helped me a lot
BRB - buying more fabric to make this! Thank you!!
Hahah yay 💕💕
Now i am gonna make this
I love that you don't have to use bias tape for the armholes and neckline. Also appreciate the links to the steps.
Thanks I’ve been looking for this dress
Glad I could help ☺️
This is lovely😍😍
💖💖💖💖
Maddy! These are too beautiful 😍 😭 **slow clap**
🥰😭 too kind!! Thank you!
Love this style of slip dress because it’s bra friendly. About to attempt making this with a pretty printed charmeuse I found on sale at Joanns. Thanks for the tutorial.
Guys, remember at 8:51 to rotate that first top we made so that the diagonal line is straight. Then, sketch it out to make the second top while adding some extra ease for the gathering later on.
Very nice well done
These are gorgeous! I love all of your sewing tutorials, and have quite a few book marked to try out, however I was wondering if there was a way to find the warp and weft of the fabric when you are repurposing another item of clothing?
Absolutely the cutest dress, I'm so exited to try it out :)
Me planning to spend all my money on fabric to recreate Essential Club tutorials💸💸💸💸💸
Hahaha you’re the best 🥰😘
these dresses are so so so beautiful! Like a dream! I also wanted to ask whether those ziggy zaggy scissors really work to prevent raw edges? I often do a zig zag stitch but it can get quite bulky- thanks for all your tutorials!!!🥰🥰❤️🐬
Thanks so much 🥰
It totally depends on the material. Most of the time I wouldn’t rely on them to prevent it from fraying on exposed seams.
Love this! If I wanted to add sleeves, at what point should I add them? Thank you!
Has anyone sorted out how to cut the front bust pieces? I'm having trouble understanding the instructions.
This is so beautiful!! Do you think it would work with a gathered skirt instead of straight slip? :)
Love the dress!! The camera quality tho?! 🤯
Thanks ☺️☺️
I know, sadly it’s been terrible weather this past week+ and didn’t make for ideal lighting/filming conditions 😭 had to make do.
I an in love with this dress. With bias cut garments shouldn't you let it grow before you hem it?
It was really nice though.
❤❤❤❤
Fav dress ever, also where are your shorts from? If you diyed can you share?
and what is better than vintage😍???!!!!
Riiiiight 🙌🏽
This video is great I’m trying to remake it but am wondering if when you cut the fabric for the top / breast cups does the fabric have to be at an angle too or is any way fine thank you ^_^
Am I insane for wanting to make this dress but the only thing I have sewn were napkins and pijama shorts? I have a wedding in four weeks and I really want to make this, I have a lot of free time as I am on vacation right now. My plan is to make a prototipe first with another fabric before risking it all on the satin.
hey, love the video, just wondering what seam allowance to use for the dress? cheers, might have missed you saying it.
Hey, thank you for this tutorial! Just wanted to check… is the top part cut on the bias? Wanna make sure before I chop into my fabric 😅
I believe the whole dress is cut on the bias
hey just wondering if this is beginner friendly, i'm in love with it!!
I definitely feel this is doable for beginners. The gathering and aligning part might take a bit of extra concentrating to get it right if you haven’t done anything like that before. But you should be fine 🤗
The more advanced sewers obviously got it, but you can see that there are questions about the seam allowance and cutting the top on the bias. These are basic concepts. Sometimes, your audience has to process the concepts and it helps if you speak slower and leave space between your sentences.
Overall, I'm excited about the pattern. It looks easy when you have done a bodice similar to this one, but this is a technique I need to learn. Will be taking notes on the measurement and will keep referring back to your presentation because I really, really like how you made the pattern and how flattering it is. Best slip dress I'm seen! Thank you, very much!
Do you think linen would work with this style?
With what seam allowance to do you sew everything?
hi! how did you figure out (5:46) "which section you wanted to be the top"? should I measure under bust to hip? or under bust to waist? or something else?
I think that's if you are matching patterns.
does the top part need to be cut on the bias?
What seam allowance do you use?
What size seam allowance / where on the plate are you follwoing as a guide to sew these pieces? Thanks!
Is there a way to make this without cutting the fabric on the bias? I dont mind using a zipper if needed.
👏👏🇧🇷
I would love to replicate this dress with a satin I've got at home BUT... It's one way strech. Do I still cut on the bias or is it gonna be wanky ? Is the stretch acting like a bias ?.. Do I have to put the stretch lengthwise, widthwise (I don't know if this is a real word) or in the bias. Thanks for the help !
If you cut it using the stretch it's going to fit but not have the same drape, that flowy feeling you only got it on the bias. However I'm not sure if you cut on the bias with a stretchy fabric it will stretch later, you'll have to Google that part.
As a general rule when working with stretch fabric, the side of maximum stretch goes widthwise because we want the clothes to extend sideways, not lengthwise.
Por favor subtitulos en castellano, te sigo desde Argentina
Hi, would I be able to sew sleeves onto it?
hey, is there a reason behind using the zig zag scissors at 11:10 ? if so could anyone explain? thanks
It is supposed to keep the fabric from fraying. Fabrics like cotton and satin tend to fray a lot
Hi there! Question! Did you cute the 4 top pieces on the bias as well?
Yes,
👍👍👍👍👍🙂🙂🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
ضعي القياسات على الباترون من فضلك
I tried making this twice and no luck getting the cups to fit my chest right 😥
At 5:41 u took the hip measurement and the length right ?
And I didn’t understand the measurement of the smaller width part that u trimmed
Do the bodice pieces need to be on the bias? I think it’s just the skirt right?
If you follow on with the new transcript that Google provides, the bodice is cut on the bias. I wasn't sure either.
What’s your body measurements? It would help to understand easily.
Lijepa si talentirana ali previše pričaš 😍
l like this dress. But l don't the mesrument. Can u draw the dress and mesrument number big.
Is there a reason you use inches instead of cms?! X
No particular reason. I’ve just found it easier to calculate with smaller numbers and also majority of my viewers are americans which use inches too - when I remember I try say the cm conversion.
Mirror-ing 😂
The struggle was real 😂
Hi! I'm trying out this dress as a beginner, and I am insanely confused at the cutting on bias part, how do I measure out how much I am cutting after getting the 45 degree angle? Because I just measured out 100 cm (roughly 39 inches) on each side of my fabric to create a square which gave me way too much fabric cut off.. I am very very confused haha!
Additionally, it would be lovely to know what measurements you're cutting to easier cut our own! Very good video nontheless!
could you make this dress into a top
you look so prety lady..(:
Hello what type is the Fabric sorry if you say on video, I don't anglophone.
Exactly what Fae said ☺️ satin and floral cotton
@Fae Villin thank you😁
@@TheEssentialsClub thank you😁
А погладить материал не судьба? Сняла штору и стала шить.
Jezussss I fucked up the top and im outof material… off to the charity shop tomorrow maybe i’ll find another bedsheet that matches the bottom 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
Sorry, but this „Tutorial“ is a complete waste of Time and fabric. Totally disapointed. The hips are way to narrow if you follow along. And the cleveage is WAY to low and i allready added at least 6 Inches. The gathering Part didn‘t work out, because 2 Inches don‘t seem to be not even slightly enough. Nice to Watch, but that’s actually it for this…
Did you manage to find any other videos that made a similar style? I find this video very confusing. I know Jess Dang made a similar style dress but just want to know if there are more tutorials out there.
Brutto modo di prendere le misure, per non parlare di come sono state unite le 2 parti del corpetto. Che pasticciona.... 😱
your explanation for making the front bodice makes no sense
I understood it perfectly.
She need to take a deep breath
girl it’s literally so simple😭😭 maybe you just failed to understand it
The issue is the fabric is too patterned to see the proper "hilling" in the front pieces. It's a newbie tutorial.... be kinder lmfao
I'm a beginner at sewing and this tutorial literally brought me to tears 💀
I’m tired listening to the none stop talk 😂😂😂
