A cinematic suite of contemplative, elastic set pieces that conjures the titular Virginian river/tribe/extinct county, the second solo album by Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, Steve Gunn, Hiss Golden Messenger) deploys banjo, percussion, piano, and voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone. Featuring Tom Carter.
Old posting I know, but this has got to be the best rendition I’ve ever heard of this since the original. Absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for posting. 👍
Nailed it. Perfect. I've heard so many versions, played it with a lot of folks, I've never heard the mournful sorrow and loss captured like that. I agree with +nickhoffer, the tone on that banjo is beautiful.
This is a favorite of mine. Though Ernie played it pretty quick, I love to play it slow and mournful.
So good, really doing the song justice with this. Also that tone is fucking immaculate. Whoever made that instrument really knew what they were doing.
whoever made that baby knew what they were doin!
this was made by the buckeye banjos guy, i recognize the bridge and it says buckeye on the scoop plate
I absolutely love this version, thanks for posting.
This music is full of kindness and something else real. I love real emotions. Even if they are very quiet and unobtrusive.
This is so beautiful. Thank you.
So pretty!! I'll have to try this one out.Great job!!
You've done exceedingly well,, don't ever stop

Jan Douglas it’s a buckeye banjo made by Greg Galbreath
mmm - Very nice.
Lovely rendering, thanks Nathan, but why is it in G sharp/A flat?
Are you related to Nathian Bowles - B-1766 - son of John Bowles B- 1712 : My ancestry goes all the way back to Nathan Bowles, son of John Bowles, son of Gidian Bowles
yeah wonderful. Could i know which tunning is it ?
It’s gotta be standard, maybe shifted up or down, but looks like he’s just playin around with G, C and D
Great sound and voicing! Beautifully played! What is the tuning?
I think BGBD
But with a cap on the first, so CG#CD#
It’s double c
@@cannedbread3125 It's G. gDGBD Those are the intervals, though it may be pitched differently.
