Love my Alter Ego x4. Its the only one I could find that truly nails my old EP3 and Space Echo delay sounds. These could all have their own full video as even the AEx4 is quite deceptively comprehensive. Great video (again) guys! Vids are always better with beer btw!
Great rundown (as always). Some 5 years later, a couple things worth mentioning: Both pedals have extremely limited MIDI functionality (even for the time), consisting of changing presets (any of them for the SDD-3000, saved presets 1-3 for the AEX4), clock on the AEX4 (supposedly, but I haven't gotten it to work). That's it! No turning the presets off or on, no tempo/clock (for the SDD3000), no control over *any* parameters / expression stuff, no looping control via MIDI, etc. Really, you can just call up a preset and that's it. I've been using a SDD3000 as my main delay for a few years now and I've even set up the presets in the "banks" to be A = on, B = off, with multiple copies of each preset with tempos for the different times already dialed in. I recently picked up the AEX4 figuring that the MIDI can't be as limited as the SDD3000... but: wrong, change preset only (which is apparently also pretty much the case for their flagship Plethora X5/X3 pedals, too. C'mon Behringer! Entäuschend!) MIDI control/implementation isn't a deal breaker, but it is amazing to have it (kind of like the feeling you got when you discovered you could save your sounds to a preset on the DL4!) and disappointing to have it fall short (with no firmware updates, etc. And, in the SDD-3000's case, a totally discontinued pedal). That said, both pedals make absolutely gorgeous sounds. Both are equally huge. The Korg may win out for having more slots to save sounds and for the huge range of parameters, while the TC wins for being way more intuitive (and way, way cheaper).
It pays to crack a manual; the SDD3K aside from having loads of character and control, also has a few hidden functions, like ducking. The modulation knob is a very unusual feature, in that it's continuously variable from Sine to triangle, square and ending at random with interesting points between. The Alter Ego X4 is great sounding and easy to use, but has one confounding flaw; there is no control over modulation whatsoever, unless you use a Toneprint, in which case you can't use those stunning vintage models. Then again, at its price point, there's no multi delay that beats it. Both pedals have a control input, but the Korg can control multiple simultaneous parameters and even selectively invert its control knob parameters, which as you might imagine, can get some really insane sounds.
Don't forget that the heart of the preamp sound is in the input attenuator Edge uses the -30 dB setting to get the real magic out of the pedalYou guys are great :)
Thank you for using the TC. I have the smaller version. It's wonderful. Really can't beat it for the vast variety of analog tones you can get. So happy also to hear the Korg. The Edge would be proud.
I have an original KORG SDD 3000 rack unit I had in storage for the last 20 years. I plugged it in the other day... it's all about cranking the preamp. The delay effects are trippy but the tone from pushing the front of an amp with it is unreal. I'm going to use this thing on bypass just for the preamp. It really creates a sharp attack with a hint of breakup. very stoked.
I was considering buying the Korg, but I ended up going with the TC Alter Ego X4 about a week ago to go along with my Timeline. I am really liking it so far. It has some weird quirks, but I can't imagine finding anything better for the price ($150 from PGS! Crazy). It is quite huge, but it looks cool and sounds great. Can't ask for much more. I'm using the TC for "basic" delays and the Timeline is handling the really weird stuff.
O my ... When I saw this I was so excited. I thought it was a deep dive on this two. I really love the SDD-3000. No worries I will watch this again. However feel free to take another look at this two anytime.
That Pedal Show awesome!! Thanks for the response! That DynoMyRoto is calling my name. Cheers guys!! Side note: What are your thoughts on Jetter? Waiting on a red square to arrive
It's probably for the best in the long run, I found you guys via the old videos on Daniel's channel and was pleasantly surprised at how well organized the videos were. Ditching the 2nd half of the original video and structuring the Delay episode as 2 separate videos goes a long way to making the content more cohesive.
Beautiful show, guys. When it comes to mega-delays (and various other effects) I've been spoiled by the Eventide H9 since it was introduced. There's no fiddling with USB cables, there's no hunching over the pedalboard tweaking knobs and menus. Use the Bluetooth app on an iOS device or computer, and it just makes life so much easier in my studio work! Sounds great, but what puts it over the top for me is how easy it is to get the most out of it. However, my #1 delay machine is a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo, that sounds...well...delicious, and it's bonehead simple to use. I don't mind the slight maintenance stuff.
The magic in the Sdd3000 is when the input is just overloading and the output is set to +4db (approx 20db boost). That into a Vox / Marshall /.Fender is the sound and one of the main reasons why Edge, Lanois etc use the unit (aside from some nice echos !). Also, if the pedal is not used in that way, the Sdd3000 setting will have reduced output compared to bypass.
I always love the delay vids! I have bought and sold more delays than I care to name. However as I have twin 5 year old children and am in fact a working/teaching musician; the Flashback by TC is my work horse, perhaps until I can afford the Strymon. Keep up the awesome shows and thank you.
SDD sounds amazing but so easy to mess it up! Tweaker's delight for sure. That sound I think I've bought and sold one several times so something about it is special
Yeah, I'm obviously wrong. The other one had a white headstock. I watched the 2 videos one right after the other and just figured (plus/minus beer) that Anderton's had never sold the "Sound like AC/DC BY bustin' the bank"-Gretsch. This: gyazo.com/93756e67d314493fa1d78932a5e8335d This: gyazo.com/2adf5d19bc208956960d9e60fa63db06 Bottomline: I'm the blind one here :)
Absolutely loved the video! I have seen 'loads' of this channel video's and learned so much! Even my English's been improved lol! Here, I especially liked the sdd-3000 and am 90% convinced about buying one. BUT since I play the chapman stick, I wonder about ins and outs: can it work as a dual mono and keep separation between the left and right signals? and maybe mae a preset where one signal has no delay(by turning right channel level down maybe?)I hope we'll keep seeing those lovely guests, Pete Thorn Ed O'Brien, all those über nice people. Thank you!
Hey Dan and Mick - Got a real nerdy one for you... Would love to hear your thoughts on patch cables and plugs etc types of and their impact on tone. I know you've touched on the capacitance of leads before but in my experience the high current draw digital effects like the ones you've been demoing are often a bit noisy in the signal chain. So making sure the noise level from patch cables and leads is kept to a minimum before these effects is very important. There is always a lot of myths and hearsay around these sort of "peripheral" items in the signal chain so a short video might be quite informative to some members of your audience. Keep doing a fantastic job guys! Your approach and content is spot on. Cheers
+Sam Ploutos As long as they're good quality, shielded cables, Sam, your patch leads won't make much of a difference. Such short runs mean that capacitance isn't an issue - again, assuming you're using something high quality - and as long as they're shielded that will deal with noise. You're going to get much more noise from your pickups and a rubbish power supply. Doubt there's enough for a whole video and we'll probably just upset everyone because we use really expensive cables! (And you probably don't need to).
May the analog gods bestow us with another year of great aluminium boxes filled with stuff that makes our guitars sound amazing. Any vintage tube amp clone kit companies that you guys would recommend? I've been looking at Ceriatone, Trinity Amps, Weber and a few others and honestly am not too picky about what I build, but have been leaning towards a British 18w or a Princeton/5E3 Deluxe. Cheers!
I'd love to see a couple of mini pedals videos, look at some of the newer company's like outlaw effects. Kudos though guys, these videos have taught me so very much
Love the sound of the egox4 plus the Gretch sounds fantastic... Also you should of done the Tumnus review in this vid because that's the only time the Tumnus has sounded awesome to me I went off the Tumnus but now its raised its head again.
Bring on the 'Deeeeelay Man' T-shirt guys, although still waiting for my Fuzz shirt ordered 2 weeks before xmas. Doesn't help living at the other end of the world in Tassie...Hopefully Aust Post will be back at work this week.
Great show! Inspired me to learn a bit more about my Timeline too! Excellent sounds once again too!! Have you thought about sharing some of your favourite TL settings Dan?
Idea for another episode: "Mick and Dan's Current Pedal Boards." Out of all the awesome pedals you demo on the show, how many of them actually earn a place in your rig? In this episode, Mick seems pretty taken with the Alter Ego and I am wondering if it actually made it onto one of your boards. Just an idea. Plus, it could be something you do every 6 months or so, just to keep us up to date. Keep up the good work, gents! (PS. I'm buying an Alter Ego shortly after my D&M Drive arrives :)
+Steve Hedrick Good idea Steve! It didn’t - I’ve been swapping between the Boss DD-500, Analogman ARDX20 and Free The Tone Flight Time 2. And a Flashback 2 that has kicked the DD-500 out now I come to think of it. I use that for reverse delay sounds. Cheers!
I'm like Mick... too many knobs and too many switches turns me off. I own the Alter Ego X4 because of it's simplicity and even then I only programmed two out of the three delay slots haha.
Found an AEX4 in Reverb for about 130USD, I'm the happiest man ever since! IMHO works the best with lower output pickups, with Hi-Output pickups the sound sometimes "breaks" specially with the Copykat and Echorec setting. It's just a beautiful delay. It has MIDI ports but still haven't found a use for it; any idea about that?thanks guys!!!
Was rewatching the chorus video and thought of the chase bliss pedals. You guys need to do a really indepth and understanding video of MIDI maybe with some disaster area stuff or the G2. It'll be a long episode, might need a guest!
Micah Berlow - problem with that is that MIDI works differently with different pedals and indeed, with different switching systems. There's too much to cover in one tutorial. If Chase Bliss pedals are your thing, then there's a guy called Paul Uhl, who is a Beta tester for Chase Bliss, who put a few tutorials on the Chase Bliss site, specifically covering things such as CC programming etc. Very usefull indeed.
rangga aditya Yes I did, but if you fast forward to minute 1:00 you will read a message in the bottom of the video. And in their upload page you will see that they already changed the name of the previous video that I mentioned in my comment. I just wanted to help you and potentially others with the same question.
hey guys great vid as always, i was wondering if youve ever mucked around with the akai headrush, reason i ask is as far as im aware its the only unit with an output for each simulated tape head so lucky ones like you guys with lots of great amps can dedicate an amp to each head theres 5 outputs so the delays can be sent each delay to a seperate amp and you can sculpt the sound around the room in 3d....
Hey guys I wonder how many interesting sounds you could achieve by putting modulation/drive/eq pedals in the insert loop of a delay like analogman's or the newer ehx memory man. There are some other effect pedals, digital and analog with this feature which is often suggested to be, but rarely actually utilised and I wonder why is that? Anyway, good that you brought back the video, that was some very tasty playing by both of you there especially in the first part ;)
If you're getting your gain from your amp should the delay be in the loop? I know you guys prefer to run them before the amp and I've seen this mentioned in a previous video, but not sure which one. Personally I'm planning on the Boss DD-500 after watching both these vids. \m/
+sunnibird We'd say that the gainer your amp is in the front end, the more you might want to think about delay in the loop.... if you want it to sound clean and clear. Cheers!
I'm not sure the Alter Ego can be mentioned as a "Mega Delay". I have one that I love, but it has only vintage simulations and some of them are so much modulated that are hard to use. Moreover if the pedal is not connected to a computer via tone print there is not so much to change in the delay sounds. I intend a "mega delay" a unit that can do it all by its own, not with a computer.
+Fret Climber Hoping to do that, along with the other Workstations. I (Mick here) did it on the Andertons channel just recently (not posted yet) and thought it was excellent.
Hi guys, thank you for all your great videos! Did you power the pedal with it’s own poweradapter since it requires 600mA? My powersupply offers only 500mA so maybe i should use the adapter that comes with the pedal.
You need to make sure the pedal is getting the current it needs. Our power supply system can deliver that but yours can't, definitely use the one supplied. And watch our VCPI episode from a while back. If you scroll through the past videos you'll find it. Cheers!
That Pedal Show Thanks! Do you know if it’s possible to combine for example two 400mA power outputs to one 800mA with a cable for example on voodoo lab powersupply?
Triple delay is a piece of crap Tc electronic makes some good delays the triple is not one of them. However TC's quality control stinks they make pedals that do not last all junk.
any thoughts about "vibe's" would like your oppinion about the one greg koch uses neo-instruments. i've seen the video that mick done, and would like to see some more please...........or have you already covered those
cheer's dan, can i ask you if you know much about an old pedal i've just got? it's a columbus CHR-CHORUS. made in japan. i know you like these swirly types of boxes
+1963strat It's Mick, not Dan. Late 70s/early 80s pedal, Japanese made as you say. Housing bears resemblance to Boss Compacts so was probably an copy/OEM thing, maybe. I had a Columbus Strat copy as I remember! Possibly originated from one of the big Japanese OEM manufacturers - Matsumoku/Fujigen etc...
Gents: It would be great if you could give a discussion and demo of buffered vs. true-bypass pedals: why buffers are there; when to opt for buffers vs. true bypass; where to put buffered pedals in your signal chain, and the impact of that decision with some demos. It seems like "true-bypass" has become synonymous with "quality," but I'm betting the truth is more nuanced, based on nothing more than the reputation of some of the buffered pedals out there (Klon, anyone?).
+NullusOrdo We did a show called something like 'Buffers & Unimaginable Excitement...' watch that and see if it answers your questions. You're right - there's nothing wrong at all with a good buffer!
Save some money for the X4, the momento you plug it in, you'll know it was the right choice. Such a delightful and tasty delay. And the Tone Print stuff is out of this world...
Silly question: does the Alter Ego have proper, clicky mechanical switches or the soft (electronic?) switches like their smaller pedals? I have the Sub 'n' Up, which I love - other than those soft switches.
+That Pedal Show here is a challenge: How about trying out the Line6 Helix vs. Fractal Ax8? :) I know it may go against your principles, but they are some very interesting new tools
+Nacho Harriague it's not principles, it's that those are sooooo in depth, there's no way we could do this in a single show, but we're not saying never, we just need to work out a format
+That Pedal Show Here's an idea: Choose 1 or 2 "typical" amp + pedal + mic combo (i.e. Deluxe Reverb + TS808 + SM57). Then do a comparison between the real one and the modelers trying to make it as "real" as possible. :)
+Nacho Harriague Hello Nacho. I bought a Helix recently (Mick here) in order to try and reframe this whole debate a little bit, and it may feature in a show or two in time, once I'm really comfortable with using it. We'll save you some time and trouble - when recording them you can make them sound virtually indistinguishable - plenty of UA-cam demos have proved that. But in the room/on stage, at proper volumes the real amps and digital sims are very, very different. It's not about better or worse (although Dan and my personal preferences are for for real amps/pedals), it's about application. Many of our touring friends choose Kemper over the others as they say it's the most natural sounding. Every single one of them says they'd rather plug into a real amp given the choice, but it's just not practical for their situations. Dan and I don't care about practicality so much. :0)
That Pedal Show I can imagine there's a difference for live applications as well as why some people may choose sims for portability, etc. Thanks for the thorough response and looking forward to seeing when/how you bring sims in. Great show btw :-)
U2 seems like this mega huge band, but I've literally never known a person that was into them or a guitarist that knew their songs. How do they have that image?
+Andrew Moseley Excellent! Never a fave band for me (Mick here) but about 20 gazillion people would seem to disagree! They'd have been an awesome trio without the front guy. Like Led Zep. //ducks// ;0)
90% of UA-camrs demo delays with U2 riffs. The key is using the back of a grippy pick. In fact, you don't need his delays, just that scratchy sound. Anyways, not that my two cents matter, but, in my opinion, his sounds are so specific that I'd rather not tred upon them without getting them right. I for one love his tone. I know a couple, but I've never really been into learning classic riffs. Maybe I should? Oh well. That's what Dan and Mick are for. =D
I currently have a TIMELINE, SDD 3000 and a X4, and the SDD 3000 is by far the best of the 3. Shame the SDD 3000 is on longer being made. TC's stuff is low end these days, not as good as they use to be.
Bort Henderson. Do you mean the SDD3000 rack or pedal version is no longer being made? There was a rumour that the pedal version had gone out of production, but that is not the case. Korg are still making them, they are just on back order at the moment. I agree with you about it's quality.
Bort - I may be wrong about that. I read a few months ago that they were definitely still in production but on back order, but it may have changed since then.
+Phill PT We did the El Capistan in the Tape Echo episode a while back. It's not really in the same group as these do-it-alls (although we do love it!) Thanks for watching.
Love my Alter Ego x4. Its the only one I could find that truly nails my old EP3 and Space Echo delay sounds. These could all have their own full video as even the AEx4 is quite deceptively comprehensive. Great video (again) guys! Vids are always better with beer btw!

Really got my eye on the Alter Ego. Do i need it? No. Will i buy it? Sitting in a cart . we shall see
I did. Regret nothing. Beautiful pedal
@@ax_el_alvarez still on my big board!
That Alter is KIIILLAAAAARRR like Dan said hehE!!!!!!!
Do an episode where you guys just drink more and more each time you turn on a pedal xD
That would be ace.
Very usefull indeed.
add i just finished making lunch too perfect timing
Love. You. Guys. Mike.
+Mike Roadblock And we love you Mike! Thanks for watching!
such a good show today. can't wait the 2.2 (^^)
rangga aditya Part 2.2 was last Friday's video dec 30th.
Mauricio Peres didn't you read the title? ...
rangga aditya Yes I did, but if you fast forward to minute 1:00 you will read a message in the bottom of the video. And in their upload page you will see that they already changed the name of the previous video that I mentioned in my comment. I just wanted to help you and potentially others with the same question.
Mauricio Peres ooo ok ... Thanks BTW .. 😁
It is with some irony that the video you "repeat" concerns delay pedals!
Oh man, you guys are killing me.. I blame you for my PAS (Pedal Acquisition Syndrome).. !!
And yet, I love you for it haha.. Cheers guys
+Ray Torvalds we're sorry and grateful at the same time ;)
+That Pedal Show Hahaha I hate you and love you at the same time ;)
hey guys great vid as always, i was wondering if youve ever mucked around with the akai headrush, reason i ask is as far as im aware its the only unit with an output for each simulated tape head so lucky ones like you guys with lots of great amps can dedicate an amp to each head theres 5 outputs so the delays can be sent each delay to a seperate amp and you can sculpt the sound around the room in 3d....
+szpfryderyk thanks S, yeah, the delay loop thing is awesome, a great way to experiment with new sounds
Question if anyone knows: Can the Alter Ego toneprints be ported into the toneprint slots of the TC Flashback Triple?
Is the Alter Ego x4 a digital or analog delay? I want to get as much warmth as possible for my worship pedalboard.
+the Paul Thomas Music digital effect, analog dry through
If you're getting your gain from your amp should the delay be in the loop? I know you guys prefer to run them before the amp and I've seen this mentioned in a previous video, but not sure which one. Personally I'm planning on the Boss DD-500 after watching both these vids. \m/
+sunnibird We'd say that the gainer your amp is in the front end, the more you might want to think about delay in the loop.... if you want it to sound clean and clear. Cheers!
Much thanks. Love the channel keep up the great work :)
Rule Number one - never put a drink on top of your amp....
Yes! It drives me crazy when people do that.
okay mom.
Glad you repeated this one...repeated, get it? I'll show myself out...
Do you think you could take a look at the new Keeley delay work station
Can't believe you guys haven't included the TC Triple Delay!!
But LOVE the vids nonetheless :)
I Know love to see them stack'em .
Triple delay is a piece of crap Tc electronic makes some good delays the triple is not one of them. However TC's quality control stinks they make pedals that do not last all junk.
What's the edge? I googled and could not find any rack mount delays from the 80s named that..
guitarist of U2
All good but still bought the timeline 👍🏻
why? I am researching them now.
what is the brown snakeskin Mesa in the background ?
Probably a Lonestar. That's the only Mesa I've seen featured on this channel so far.
+Moltisanti Yes, it's a Lone Star. Had it pretty much since they came out. Reverb is broken, need to have it mended!
any thoughts about "vibe's" would like your oppinion about the one greg koch uses neo-instruments. i've seen the video that mick done, and would like to see some more please...........or have you already covered those
+1963strat This is on the cards for early 2017. The Ventilator/Vent are brilliant. Cheers!
cheer's dan, can i ask you if you know much about an old pedal i've just got? it's a columbus CHR-CHORUS. made in japan. i know you like these swirly types of boxes
Its an 80s sorta generic MiJ pedal, also sold under other brand names eg Aria. A very "80s" take on chorus in terms of its tone I believe.
+1963strat It's Mick, not Dan. Late 70s/early 80s pedal, Japanese made as you say. Housing bears resemblance to Boss Compacts so was probably an copy/OEM thing, maybe. I had a Columbus Strat copy as I remember! Possibly originated from one of the big Japanese OEM manufacturers - Matsumoku/Fujigen etc...
the things bloody amazing you can get a hell of a lot more of of this than the modern stop box's
Thanks guys!Great video!
+patrick b you're welcome
Fantastic! I'll check it out. And thanks for the quick reply! Love your show; look forward to Fridays even more now :-).
what do you guys think about the smaller version two Alter Ego?
+matthew b Canerdy I haven't tried it - Mick here. Assuming it's exactly the same?
The Alter Ego has fewer algorithms and fewer controls, just like the relationship between the Flashback X4 and the Flashback.
Save some money for the X4, the momento you plug it in, you'll know it was the right choice. Such a delightful and tasty delay. And the Tone Print stuff is out of this world...
*reminder Delay Man t-shirt. Personally I'd like a dirt and delay man shirt.
Care to do a show on the elusive Cornish pedals?
+TheSphericalGuy will do, want to grab a nice HiWatt to do it ;)
Oh of course, can't wait ;)
Silly question: does the Alter Ego have proper, clicky mechanical switches or the soft (electronic?) switches like their smaller pedals? I have the Sub 'n' Up, which I love - other than those soft switches.
I want his red tele
in loop or in the front?
Always in the front for our kinds of amps/gain. Cheers!
Thanks so much!
+Andrew Moseley Do you live in a cave?
That Pedal Show With Mick apparently....lol
To be fair, Dan sounded excellent and made me think I should learn a tune or two.
I guess you guys don't dig offsets. All good, but the intro would've been killer with a jazzy
+Toot Toot Dig 'em, just don't own any. Mick wants a Jazzmaster.... but he wants a 335 first.
That Pedal Show I can't blame him, they're beautiful guitars
The best sounds occur when Mick is playing and Dan is tweaking the dials. Each are in their wheelhouse.
God.. How i wish i had a JOB! so i could buy a hamstead amo and some pedals and some new PU's for my Tele and what not :D
Sorry..but didnt i watch this same video already some weeks or so ago??
+Juro “kolumbijec” Chovan All in the annotations and video description, Juro...
yes..you are right...anyway...i enjoyed watching it again...i even watched again the very first show... please, never stop!
this video is just an echo of its former self.
Brunetti!
Forgot the horn 14:30
Lost in space
Can you write spanish subtitles, please?
+Carli Sousa sorry Carli, there's just no way we could make that work
Lo puedes configurar tú directamente en youtube
Nice bit of stereophonics at the start
Part 2.2 _ El Capistan Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease
+Phill PT We did the El Capistan in the Tape Echo episode a while back. It's not really in the same group as these do-it-alls (although we do love it!) Thanks for watching.
midiverb ...
