  • When you file for a trademark, beware of these companies that try to take your money! Since filings are public knowledge, these companies retrieve your information and will send you official looking letters that try to get you to pay for various things related to your new trademark. The organizations sound real, because they are. These are real businesses that prey on vulnerable business owners who
I actually asked my trademark attorney first just to make sure, and she verified that one shouldn't have to pay for these solicitations.
After filing two trademarks, I received 9 letters from various companies claiming that I needed to pay a total of $8,866.00! If I didn't know any better, I'd probably be scared not to pay them and actually send checks over. I mean, it's a business expense anyway, right?
    NO! Don't be fooled!
In this video, I show you exactly what these letters are like, and where to go to get more information to verify that noticed you receive are actually real.
Here is the resource on the United States Patent and Trademark Office about misleading notices that you will receive:
    www.uspto.gov/...
I've seen similar notices come in from incorporating and also DBAs (doing business as), so watch out!

The only mailings you need to worry about are the ones that come from the US Trademark and Patent Office.
The only thing you have to watch for is the renewal notice every six years. This is a legitimate expense.

Thanks for posting this video. I used to get a ton of these letters, too after I did a trademark. I get the same type of thing for my domain names. ... I like your new haircut. It's been 23+ years since I had one.

Hey Pat, I think similar scammers are all over the world. For example in Poland after establishing my own self-employment company, I received a letter saying that I have to pay few hundred of polish zloty in order to be written into company register. It looked very convincing, but of course it wasn't official register, so it was completely unnecessary...

In Poland we have that much scam just when we start to be entrepreneur. When we register as one, we have to give our office address. Official government registrator is called CEIDG. And there are plenty of letters from CEDG, COIDG, CEIODG. Their business model is to just add or take one letter from acronym and then send letter that "you have to pay" to be in our registry. But they surely do not mention that their registry is a scam.

Look at the postage. "Presorted Standard Mail" is a dead giveaway. 1) Open the envelope 2) Find the return envelope 3) Put everything into the return envelope (to include the envelope you opened) and mail all their bullshit back to them. These ripoff scammers do not pay a cent until the return envelope is scanned through at the Postal Service. For every envelope that is returned to them, they pay the postage. Postal Service sends them a bill at the end of the month. If everyone that receives junk mail with a return envelope would just send all their crap back to them without enclosing any money, bankruptcy will soon follow. Besides, you will be keeping the Postal Service alive and well.

Send their self addressed envelopes back to them so they have to pay for the postage.

This is so interesting! How about making video about trademark certification but not just in US? I'm considering making such action myself, but it's so confusing, about how trademarks are being protected around the globe (you can register it just in Poland or in entire EU for instance), and also about how much it costs (I was told that if I will start a NGO and register trademark through it, I can get up to 80% discount (!!!) (At least in EU). And also how it protect your rights on global market, especially if your working on global project. Do we stand a chance against Chinese copiers etc? That would be such informative video!

If you live outside the US, do you still need to trademark your brand with the US Trademark and Patent Office? Or each country has its own Trademark and Patent Office?
