- Note: I have combined all three parts of this video and made a longer video with some extra stuff I left out due to time ( • Hieronymus Bosch, The ... . I also re-recorded the sound with better technology. I recommend going straight to the longer video, but will leave the short ones up if people want the 15-minute chunks.
This video explains my viewpoint on hell - • The History of Hell

In this video I look at Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Nobody painted Hell quite like Bosch. What we think of as Hell, and certainly what Bosch thought of as Hell is not based on the bible. What we think of as hell comes from later mistranslations and medieval art. What hell is or like, or whether it exists in the bible at all is widely disputed even within modern Christianity.
The Garden of Earthly Delights was the most popular video(s) voted on by viewers. I am still taking suggestions, so please put them on the comments of my video "what is your favourite work of art?"
There are no records to tell us what Bosch or his contemporaries were thinking. There are so many theories out there, some more outlandish than others.
I have sifted through most of them, and from a process of elimination, come up with what I think is a pretty good idea. I have also come up with several theories I haven’t seen before.
Bosch’s images are so ambiguous and their meaning so elusive, that they cannot be addressed by iconography alone. This is an attempt to look at as much evidence as possible, to come up with some form of meaning. Even so, there are still multiple interpretations.
I have based my research around the Bible, Medieval history, infrared scans, art history papers, books and historical documents. But in the end it is still my opinion. If you have an opinion, then why not put it in the comments, and keep the dialogue going?
I started "Great Art Explained" during lockdown. My aim is to make videos which focus on one great artwork. I want to present art in a jargon free, entertaining, clear way with no gimmicks. Subscribe and click the bell icon to get more arts content.

I’ve been looking for this channel all my life! Thank you! Your videos are brilliant. I love learning about art. I have a question that is not meant to be offensive in any way, shape or form so please forgive me. Here goes: are the explanations of these works of art (yours and others) based on what the artist has said (symbolism, use of color, technique etc.) or are they purely the opinion of the critic? I’m guessing a combination of both - based on your knowledge of art history. Thank you for any response!
Hi Lorraine - they are a mixture - some of the paintings I know extremely well. I usually read two or three books about each painting before making the video. Watch films and read academic papers. In most cases, there are records. In many cases it’s guess work which is why I stress it is my opinion, not the definitive answer. Here’s a good example: about 10’years ago they found a record of the GOED being in the possession of Henry III. The fact it was privately owned rather than by a church changed how people viewed the painting. So I am always trying to find new info to expand the story. So yes, it’s a combination of knowledge, history, science and opinion! Thanks 🙏
@@GreatArtExplained as a blue collar guy that just listens to you I hope UA-cam is paying you well for all that work. Thanks for the content 😩🙏
@Projekt KobraTV is not the only game in town anymore. UA-cam and streaming services of all descriptions means we can watch what we like when we like. We can take our interests from the most basic level to university quality. And we are not restricted by programmers likes and dislikes. Also... if you live in the UK, ditching the TV means you save a lot of money that you would otherwise have to spend on a TV license. I don't, and never will, have a Television ever again
Art is perspective and can only be.
Even if an artist explains their heart out you would still never grasp what they felt.
So many people would say what their schooling tells them to say. Great art..
Yes many are beautiful but still its only beautiful in the eye of the beholder.
What you going to change their taste according to what others think?
No.
So many many will argue and say it has to perfect. But in this world...
There is no such thing.
Pareidolia at best in a feeling of environment passed on.
Why your favorite color is why your favorite color..
Dont ever compare ones art to the world's view. They don't matter. Only when you seek profit over pleasure does their view matters..
And now taught thoughts...
If there is a painting that certainly cannot be explained in just 15 minutes is this one. Eagerly waiting part two.
I struggled with this one! Thanks 🙏
gracias por su trabajo en alto perú don simón!
"Hardcore Christianity" - a great, intriguing, tantalising introduction. Can't wait to get into the painting itself.
Coming soon! Thanks for the comment 🙏
I liked that description as well.
I have enjoyed this painting ever since I first saw it in an art book when I was about 15. So 68 years ago. This is the first time I have ever come across a detailed discussion of it.
Part Two will be out soon - by April 1 2021
Have you studied something related to arts?
Yes, I studied fine arts in London - and history of art is a passion
@@GreatArtExplained Wow! What university?
YESS! Thank you so much for sharing you knowledge. Your videos are qpsolutly fantastic!
I suggest that you make an analysis of your own work of art 😉
Captivating. This series needs to be in schools, museums and on tv.
Thanks Catrin 🙏
If it's on UA-cam, it's everywhere.
this is the kind of painting that would overwhelm the hell out of me without a guide.
thanks
Can anybody deny the influence it had on the surreal movement some four hundred years later?Truly ahead of its time.
I spent a good hour viewing Bosch's "
The Last Judgment" while at Bruges Museum. Stunning picture. Mind blowing that it was painted over 500 years ago. Also found it incredible theTriptych wasn't covered or behind glass or any protection. I find his work just mesmerising.
The alcoves are good in Bruges... the nooks and crannies.
@@Thomas...191 You have zis word? Alcoves?
the Garden always give me a feeling of the Voynich manuscript
Came here after watching Red velvet's feel the rythm
His depiction of hell and demons are so unique and terrifying.
I love Bosch due to my love for narrative art. The man is special, separate him from common artist from his time. He so out there, goes out of the comfort zone and challenge the viewers, anger them yet fascinate them so much
You could probably fill a four part series about this and I'd happily watch it all. There's just so much going on and so much to look at, and your analysis of it all is fantastic.
Thanks 🙏 I appreciate the comment!
@@GreatArtExplained i agree, it would be incredible to get even more into it, thank you for making these :D
If Bosch had made three linked oval paintings which were very hard to understand, and which treated the subject of the state of the world after a global disaster or punishment brought by God, would that constitute a post-apocalyptic cryptic elliptic triptych?
Agreed. And hour long video for each panel!
Yes!!! My hero. I actually live in Den Bosch (aka 's Hertogenbosch) , the Dutch city from which this painter got his name. His work is utterly fantastic.
Wow nice place to live - Thanks Erik! 🙏
Why not Hertogenbogenbabuschka.
@@jmp01a24 It means forest of the Dukes. Hertogen = Dukes and bosch = forest
@@5thMilitia Learn something every day - ty
Wasn't he a German ,and I think he changed his name(a little)
The graphic of the triptych being opened is so, so visually informative! I was missing so much of the drama/theatricality of the work without being able to visualize the kinetic aspect, which now seems so integral to the work and the medium in general!!!
And also the EGG!!! Mind blown!
Thanks as always for these awesome, insightful, well-corroborated and nuanced pieces!
Thanks for the comment Kelsey 🙏
Bosch and his work always seemed to magical and random to me, this does a great job in de-mystifying him and truly understand him
Your videos are an earthly delight to all of us! thank you!
Oh thanks Arina!
600 years later, we are still marveling over the complex and provocative images of this work.
Omg, the best analisys to one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of humanity. Flawless. Impeccable. Amazing work.
Part two really soon! Thanks 🙏
@@GreatArtExplained my only thought was - is this really 'propaganda?' given a few things.
Firstly, the whole setting of the original painting was that it would only be seen by a few rich, influential or priveleged people. Not sure it had the mass exposure and the target audience of as many people as possible to be called propaganda.
But further, religion back then was less something separate in the way we think of it today, it was more of a way of life, or at least a reflection of life. It simply *was*. People had their doubts, they had their varying spectrum of belief from abelief to true believer, to a more sophisticated philosophical mindset. I think to call it propaganda is to miss the point. This is a challenging mirror held up to humanity, and the light has simply been warped so that we are starting back at ourselves in the narrative world (as you mentioned, we are the people in groups chattering and whispering away to each other).
I'm just not sure it's *pushing* a narrative like propaganda does. It's also not exactly a comfortable story to be telling somebody. If you were trying to convince someone to be a Christian using this painting, it would be a hard sell!
@@blumousey Great comment, thanks. There's a lot I can't really fit in to this format, for example, it could have been both a conversation piece AND a religious triptych. One interesting thing though, was that Henry III was reported as not particularly religious.
But, like you say, people just were religious, it was part of every day life.
Re: propaganda - maybe a strong word, but the reformation was just around the corner, and it didn't just start with Luther. There were many radical thinkers at the time, and Bosch would have known about this, being in the brotherhood. Bosch was extremely religious and I do think the GOED was one of Bosch's oeuvre and an expression of his propagating his faith.
Bosch's vision of Hell and damnation is not a comfortable way to sell christianity, but was pretty standard at the time.
Just my opinion though, thanks so much for watching!
@@GreatArtExplained Thanks for your reply, I see your point, the painting definitely has a evangelist slant to it - I suppose one of the reasons it is so venerated is because you can look at it from all of these different angles simultaneously. I forgot to mention in my previous comment how much I love your channel - have spread the word to many as it's just brilliant. Please keep going! If I might be so cheeky as to make a suggestion - I would love to see your take on Dali's Persistence of memory, compared/contrasted with the disintegration of the persistence of memory. If you ever want to cover a less 'world-famous' artist, I would love your take on the work of Roberto Ferri - a baroque revivalist full of grotesque imagery, you'd love him.
@@blumousey Thanks for your support, I appreciate it! That's a great suggestion about Dali, who I will tackle one day...
Bosch has always been my favorite classical painter and I never knew 99% of the info in the vid. thanks for taking the time to make it.
What a joy it is to get notificafions for a new video from your channel! Thanks for the hard work you put into making this, top quality documentary as usual!
Totally agree
Thank you Alejandro 🙏
I remember being enthralled by this painting when I first saw it at the Prado in 2017. Despite staring at it for so long, I couldn’t quite distill all the emotions it stirred up in me. I bought the poster at the gift shop but the image was shrunk too small to appreciate the details.. and the details were everything. Thanks for your 3-part analysis on this. 🙏 I can’t wait to go back and stare at this painting all over again with all that I’ve learned here. Liked and subscribed! 🤩
3 days ago I was in front of this masterpiece wondering what was the real meaning behind all those details. Amazing video.
Saw this painting in the Prado in Spain around 30 years ago when travelling. I was astounded on seeing it for the first time. Just jaw dropping. Thank you for sharing.
Hieronymus Bosch has been my favourite artist for nearly half a century. After him was Peter Brugel the elder, then came Thomas Cole( the founder of the Hudson River school) then Peter Paul Rubens, Francois Boucher, and Fragonard. As an artist myself, I drew the paintings of all of the above mentioned artists. But Bosch was always my favourite.
if I have to choose one painting to look at for the rest of my life,
it would be this one..
Fantastic stuff. So much to unpack here. Loved the contextual backdrop you gave about the prevailing symbolism(s) & influences. Such meticulous work! The editing on this video is also next level.
can't wait for Part II.
Out in less than a week!
There's a Bosch triptych in my country's main ancient art museum. It's stunning. Bosch has always fascinated me, because he seemed to be painting both his dreams and his nightmares at the same time and in the same canvas - sometimes even the same scene within a canvas. I'm just sorry we can't examine the work with our own eyes too close, for obvious safety reasons. The texture of the strokes of paint makes everything so palpable and real, almost as if we have a window to the artist's state of mind. The detail for the size of his works is just mind-blowing.
This is my new favourite channel!
Thanks 🙏
I was introduced to this painting when | was a teenager. My friend, who is a great artist, painted his electric guitar with scenes from the right hand side panel. It looked like the craziest "heavy metal" guitar I've ever seen. I look forward to part two of this. Cheers.
I just found this channel and got hooked up immediately and watched everything. Please keep the great content coming.
I am so beyond excited that you’ve chosen Bosch!! I found your channel a few months ago while I was look for some analysis of Bosch and I have been watching ever since!
I am 46 this year, yet I still remember seeing this as a picture of this piece in an art book in High School age 15. His name and this piece have stuck with me all these years. It is cause of this piece, I looked deeper at old masterworks, not just Heavy Metal magazines and Comics I was consuming as art at that age.
Please keep making these! Such wonderful information. This is opening my mind to a lot of art I've never seen before.
Love art, love listening to people talking about art. Basically I love this channel. Thank you!
Amazing work. It practically requires time travel to understand his intentions and the way people would have received it. Like his contemporaries, nothing about this painting is accidental or without significant planning. It must have been shocking for many viewers to see those panels opened for the first time. A sudden explosion of both color and sex. I picture a room full of elites gasping and blushing at the assault on their senses and sensibilities. Wish I could go back and be a fly on the wall.
Thank you so much for this series! I watched this before seeing the painting at El Prado and it was absolutely incredible
I don't get art.........it always has to be explained to me, and then I have to have someone explain the explanation ~George Costanza. I stumbled across your channel today and thank you. I collect a lot of antiques and always stayed away from art due to the fact that I just don't get it. This is the first video of yours I've watched and I am hooked.
This video is an absolute master class in storytelling and a blessing! Thank you !!
Bosch and Caravaggio two of my favourite artists
You have excellent taste 😊
Same. Top two without question.
I just received a print of this painting!! Delighted you've put this video up. Thanks a million. Love this channel!!
Thanks Elaine 🙏
As a hobbyist videographer for several years now, I can appreciate the work put into this production, and all the more so because I've recently put together a similar commentary that pales in comparison to yours. In contrast to your work, I intentionally approached this painting without any prior study so as to embrace it with fresh eyes. As you implied, the piece is bursting at the seams with sin. The connections you made in this art simply floors me. My heart gushes over with the same degree of indulgence revealed in the garden, it seems ridiculous to even try to be coherent in this moment here and now, not to mention try to complement your perspective. However, I would like to make some suggestions in private that may help to improve upon some of the technical aspects of your presentation. Should you be open to receiving such feedback, then be sure to contact me through my about page on my channel. Thank you so much for putting this together and enriching my palette! Also unending praise to the narrator for his warm and illustrious tone that somehow makes the experience feel as though the soul is flowing back into eternity.
Happy to take any advice - I'm the narrator too, it's a one man band. There's no email on your contact info, just a link to your blog. My email is jamespayne33@hotmail.com please do throw any tips my way - best, James
I absolutely love your comment about there being no mention of a fiery hell in the Bible. Many Christians sadly believe that those who die without Christ will burn for eternity being poked in the bum by demons. While simultaneously confessing that only those who believe in Christ and obey him will know eternal life.
On the other side there are Christians who sadly believe that their dead relatives are in some kind of heavenly realm in the clouds “looking down on me”, whereas the Bible actually says the dead are either dead or resting in Heaven but either way sleeping awaiting the day of the Lord.
Been a subscriber since October after watching your first video and I’m so happy to see that your channel has grown so much since then. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all the effort and hard work that you put in to making these amazing videos. Thank you!
Thanks so much for all your support 🙏 I appreciate it!
This was extremely well designed, by the creator of both this video and Bosch.
Great video, thank you. Have always been fascinated by this work.
Thank you for this amazing documentary! Can't imagine how much work you put into this and can't wait for part 2. This is a masterpiece, both the painting and this video!
Cheers! 🙏
I enjoy almost every video of yours. I recently took an introductory film making class with Stanford university and look at your videos in a different way since. They are brilliant in all terms : content, production, music, effects, it itself is a peace of art! Thank you!!!!!
Got so excited when I saw you have a new video out, eagerly awaiting part 2! I have never watched any art videos but you have me totally hooked!
Excellent!
YES! BOSCH!!! I've been looking forward to this one! Thanks so so so much. Another cracking 2 PARTER!!!
It’s a joy to watch these videos. Can’t wait for part two. Thank you.
Thanks for your support Cathal 🙏
I remember seeing this painting as a child and being super captivated by it. I still am today.
I used to stare at it for hours when I was around 6-7 years old.. It was quite entertaining and incredibly confusing. Today, I think it shaped some aspects of my sexuality 🤔
My favourite painting! So glad I managed to see it in person at the Prado Museum in Madrid ❤️
This piece is in a massive Art book that I've had since I was 6. I remember this piece being my favourite. There was so much detail - so much happening - storytelling - and I remember my parents explaining to me that each section represented Eden > Earth > Hell. It's great to see a video on it in such depth like this. I had no idea about the monochrome painting when the panels are closed!
Absolutely ENTHRALLING. Thank you, can’t wait for part 2!
Your videos are absolutely brilliant, and this episode especially. Fantastic job, i’m excited for part 2!
I remember seeing this painting in person; it was during a visit to Madrid back in 2013. It has always fascinated me, and it brings me tremendous amounts of happiness to see you cover this work on your channel. Keep up the fantastic work.
Fascinating, as ever. Considered and compelling. Continue to be hugely impressed with this series.
Thanks for your continued support Stefan! 🙏
Please release part II. I can't wait anymore.
Marvellous work you're doing with your channel. Thank you very much.
It will be out within a week! Thanks 🙏
Your videos never disappoint. I’ve learned so much hearing your nuanced explanations.
I was watching this with my parents and my Dad noticed what he thinks is a second, unbroken egg in the third panel. At 2:16, if you look along the horizontal line in the third panel, there's an egg looking shape on top the of wood thing shown at 4:55.
We haven't watched the rest of the parts but I thought I'd mention it.
There's just so much to take in with this painting! I'm loving the videos! I didn't think of myself of liking art but this channel is quite enjoyable!
Hi grey - You’ll see that egg comes up in part three but well spotted to your dad! Thanks for watching 🙏
Greatly appreciated all 3 videos! So helpful to my work!
This is magnificent.

My favourite channel on UA-cam right now. Love your videos, hope you keep them coming!!
Part two on its way!
You’ve got such great art content. Can’t wait for part 2!
This is possibly my most favourite work of art of all time. Bosch showed such authentic imagination, especially given the contemporaries of his time. I would also say that even in the secular world today, this painting is of so much relevance.
This is my new favorite UA-cam channel. Great work 👌
Great video, was really happy to see you post a new video. looking forward to part 2

Thank you very much for sharing your interpretation on this intriguing painting! Great video!
I recently came across your channel and I am in love with it. Binging all the videos you have, great stuff.
Now if there is a painting that can be called "happening", it is definitely this one. Eagerly waiting for part 2. Thank you for this series.
Fantastic series, much appreciated. Excellent insights coupled with stellar production. Thanks!

Absolutely love your videos!! Thank you so much!!
Your channel is fantastic! Thank you so much for all your great effort put into every video. I've discovered this channel two days ago and binge watched all your videos. Now being a bit impatient waiting for the next one 😅
You deserve way more recognition. I’m visiting El Prado tomorrow, this is perfect timing.
Thanx so much for clearing up the timeframe this was made in. I'd heard it was made in the renaissance but whenever I would look at it I'd always imagine medieval times. Something about the masses of people and the images reminded me of old etchings I've seen.
Simply amazing 🤩 Really enjoy the level of depths you take us through with vivid imagery. Thank you 🙏🏼
Cant wait for part 2..love your videos
Thanks 🙏 out next week!
Thank you, this is a real quality video, so different from what many are putting on UA-cam today. Can't wait for Part II.
