Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. Today I have a really interesting story for you about how a Pinto blew up my teaching. This is not only an interesting story, but for any of you people out there who have ever thought about having a career or even a side hustle teaching the piano, there will be useful information for you. I'm going to give you a lot of pointers because I have a background in teaching going back literally generations.

One of my teachers made it a point to teach at least one lesson in the student's home. She found many adverse conditions including a very small house with the piano in the living room along with the TV, other siblings playing, and traffic in and out. Others had un-serviceable instruments out of tune, broken or stuck keys, etc., all of which were not conducive to effective practice.
These conditions would not be recognized if the student always came to the studio.

Yes! You can be greatly enlightened about your student's practicing and home conditions by traveling to their home.

Gr8 story. It reminded me how much our day to day behavior has changed. If you watch old TV shows Paul Drake on Perry Mason often went to the library for research or that the pay phone and a dime were central characters in the Rockford Files. I loved the moral of the story about the importance of a good instrument in a nice studio.

I enjoyed your fantastic flash back memories of being a piano teacher back in the day!
I started teaching in 1991, and did many things the way you explained!
    Thanks for the flashbacks!

Pintos were notorious for exploding in rear end collisions.

I suspect Mr. Estrin is eagerly wondering how many of us caught that reference in the header.

@@cisium1184 Ha ha! I was just about to comment on this "exploding Pinto" reference myself, thinking I was going to be so clever--until I saw that I'm not the only one. Of course I'm not, duh!....This video is great, thank you for all the insights on teaching, and the entertaining story, Mr. Estrin!

What has really impressed me about the piano is the history of teaching.
    Who taught your father, Robert?
    And who taught him?
Czerny was a student of Beethoven. I know of several students of Czerny. Follow the lineage.

I studied with my father, Morton Estrin who studied with Vera Press who studied with Emil von Sauer who studied with Liszt who studied with Carl Czerny who studied with Beethoven who had worked with Haydn. I also studied with Ruth Slenczynska who studied with Rachmaninoff.

Also, for those thinking about teaching, remember churches can be a great place to give lessons!. They often have fantastic pianos that are tuned frequently at the church's expense. There is nothing usually going on during the week in the sanctuary so it's a fantastic place to meet your students with very little distractions. Obviously, clear it with the church staff first. I play the pipe organ and I took my first lessons in a church, but that's obvious bc where else do you find the king of instruments? But there are also amazing pianos just sitting there quietly till the next worship event.

      What a fantastic suggestion !!
And offer to give the church some
money for the ability to do so!!

The music shop where my Dad taught banjo actually went out of business - or rather decided not to re-open post-Rona - because the teachers revolted against a proposed increase in the store's percentage. The teachers wouldn't have made enough money, and the store wasn't making enough money off instrument sales to survive without lessons, so they decided to pack it in.

Relieved to hear that there wasn't a fiery disaster, just a bit of a winter chill in its heater's air on the way to traveling piano lessons. In a more modern time and with a wagon or SUV with tailgate, one could consider carrying around a digital piano, which might or might not be blasphemy depending on its quality. (I've encountered lousy ones, but also good ones -- especially Roland -- good enough to serve very credibly in a church and piped directly over a hi-fi hall PA system.) As was mentioned below, a student may not themselves have an instrument in good shape.

My first teacher, Clad Neff (what a musical name) had a studio on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, NYC with three Steinways! My 2nd teacher, Ted Harris came to our house but he charged $7, a huge sum in the 50's! BTW, thank you John Thompson!

David Hicken extolled how he taught celebrities as a traveling piano teacher. Might be more common with wealthy students.

Could you make review with Bechstein Concert 8. Is it true the best upright piano in the world with heavy keyboard and tone of concert grand piano?

  • @sammcbride2149
    @sammcbride2149 Місяць тому

The Ford Pinto was of course named after a horse and I'll bet there were times when Robert would rather have been riding a horse than driving that Pinto! Horses don't explode. And they don't need gas.
