  • MIKE AND DAVE’S HI-FI RIFF
Great mates Michael Evans and David Price have been arguing about hi-fi with one another for over forty years.
Mike has a huge wealth of knowledge stemming from his hi-fi retail background, and countless - and often pointless - upgrades over the years.
David’s been a reviewer since the early nineteen nineties, has edited two UK hi-fi magazines and is International Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET - and has picked up one or two things along the way.
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features the guys' unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and/or wonderful hi-fi designs.
The action takes place in Mike’s ‘hi-fi hut’, deep in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside.
With cows in the next field, cats running wild, mud on the floor and rain clouds looming, it’s not quite Hollywood!
So crack open a can, and sit back on your sofa for off-the-cuff, one-take riffing about top kit.

I use the original in a desktop set up from a Mac Mini directly driving a pair of B&W M1 speakers straight out of the headphone outputs. I recommend trying the MOJO in USB mode with a reclocker like the uptone regen. I use a regen with a TeraDak linear power supply and 2 Curious cables. This of course doubles the price of the MOJO but the sound is astonishing at times. These DACS will show up a bad input but also respond greatly to improvements to the signal going in. If you use one in your system it is well worth investing in cables and conditioners before upgrading to a Hugo2 etc. You will not experience how ridiculously good they can sound otherwise.

hey nice review, just got a mojo 2 myself to pair with some audio 64 u12t in ears and its excellent, my only recent comparisons would be the ifi dac zen v2 and the soundblaster gc7 and yeh the mojo 2 is clearly ahead of both for sonics, the ifi by comparison is a little warmer but less detailed and clinical, the mojo 2 seems to have a much wider soundstage and imaging, this became very evident when not using it for music and instead using it for desktop amp duties and gaming, it was the first time in a long time i could pick out enemies clear as day and position them.
the EQ while not being massively flexible in what you can adjust is still so well done, it sounds clean and cohesive the way they have done it, adjusting the bass for example only adjusts a tight portion with a good shelf cutoff to not muddy the mids and it works so well.
the only thing i miss would be the functionality of say the GC7 which is far more destop ''gamer'' focused, while it dont sound anywhere near as good as the mojo 2 it does offer the ability to set profiles and stuff just from having adjustable software on the pc unlike the mojo or ifi... ofcourse they are both aimed at different markets but would be nice to be able to save certain profiles for if you have multiple headphones or applications you wish to use it with.
i think thats my only gripe with it, it does get a little warm still, never used the original mojo but i know that was an issue so yeh the 2 does still get warm but mildly. the cost of the case is too high and bluetooth should be a feature as standard in 2022 whether or not that reduces the need for the poly just because too many far cheaper options offer it. i think its not deal breakers though, the device is awesome and im glad its getting the attention it deserves, have a sub.

Thanks for the review. I’m familiar with David from Stereonet, and I look forward to seeing what you do with this channel. On a side note I currently use the Zen DAC V2 with Grado 325x for my office setup. Would the Mojo 2 offer a significant upgrade? Thanks.

after 7 years I would expect it to be closer to hugo 2 in sonic performance.

You are the first that mentioned that Rob Watts, the designer of the Mojo actually thinks there is no benefit of balanced output on this design and has technical data to prove it. Subscribed!

MQA matters not as thus far it has not gathered the traction needed even for seasoned audioloons like me AND there's not a wide enough variety of music available. I'm wondering if this mojo would make a good all round DAC for a high end system say up to £10k total.

If you use TIDAL, then MQA does matter more - but I take you're point that it's not as ubiquitous as Dolby B noise reduction was in the 1980s!
If I was spending £10k, I'd be throwing a lot more at the source - excellent as the Mojo 2 is. I'd be going for a £4k Hugo TT2, plus a £3k power amp and £3k speakers.

Thanks for the review gents. Functionality aside how does the Mojo2 audio compare to the RME ADI2 DAC FS unit?
Would the Mojo2 have any issues of audio quality or EQ/Crossfeed pairing with closed or open backed Focal Headphones?
    Lastly....
Can you recommend a good quality USB C to USB C cable to use with the Mojo2 and an Android phone?
    Many thanks again.

Modify your old mojo like i have you end up with a more detailed sound and a much improved sound stage and instruments stand out better there is a horrendous 😳 smd caps in the signal path that kills the sound

I would buy it NOW if it were $450.
    But it's $725.
    F*CK.

It’s now selling in the UK for £395 (£100 off) which is around $500. That’s including a 20% tax.
