From NBC Studios in New York, it's Late Night with Conan O'Brien! Tonight, John Goodman, Drew Barrymore, and Tony Randall! With the Max Weinberg Seven! Now, here's your host, Conan O'Brien! The intro on the premiere episode in 1993 went something like that.
I bet NBC has the rights to this, because they used it for Late Night and altered it slightly for The Tonight Show...sadly didn't make it to TBS Conan. Best thing ever, Jay finally shutting up, and all of a sudden...!!! Bap-bapata, bap-bapata, bap! YEAHHH. You knew all kinds of delightful, laugh-til-you-hurt comedy was coming.
Actually, the best part of it was composed by John Lurie but he never got credit. While Conan may not be personally to blame someone in the Late Night organization f'd up royally. Ultimately, Lurie proved he copyrighted the work and was compensated without making a stink and was even invited on the show to perform as a musical guest. It's the least Conan could do.
Except it never came. Conan's Tonight Show was abysmal. As was the TBS show. That is the reason why he came in 5th place for a few years. Literally behind Chelsea fucking Handler.
Ya know.... When I first read this, I figured "Eh, he made that comment 11 years ago. Maybe he just didn't know what a cultural phenom The Office would become". But, even back then, it was already one of the most beloved things in TV history. Conan never needed luck, but in what universe is a lead-in from The Office ever considered a bad thing? Lol. That'd be about the best luck you could hope for.
@@softhausstudio Actually Shore altered Lurie's composition without consent and then it was used by Conan without giving Lurie any credit. Luckily for Lurie, after being told by Conan's lawyer that he had no recourse, he had copyrighted his music and was eventually awarded a huge payout.
@officialAmpersand Joel Godard, the one and only! And respect to you for accurately presenting how Joel says it! (The Yunnnn on O'Brien is the best -the perfect topper)
I once saw an episode of "Late Night..." where Max Weinberg and the 7 did the theme completely a capella. They were making the instrument sounds with only their mouths. I have tried repeatedly to show my girlfriend, but I am unable to find it anywhere. Please help.
@Maxemac I was under the impression that was just stock music. I don't think that was a variation of the theme at all, just a piece of music that was done in a similar style, and same types of instruments.
@vequintana Thanks! I like the more up-tempo version better... I'm guessing the reason they don't use this on "Conan" might be out of respect for Max Weinberg, considering he wrote this theme.

i miss this show so much
such a fitting theme for the king of late night.
Sit perfectly still ONLY I CAN DANCE
God I miss this theme

@@FUGP72 Conan’s Tonight Show was great, I just wish he stayed in NYC.
He actually was still able to use it at TBS. They just decided to go a different direction.
@@FUGP72You’re abysmal.
Pender nailing that high not at the end. Awesome!!
Late Night with Conan ruled.
Ahh, I miss this theme, and Max Weinberg.
man i used to love this and the little cartoon conan guy haha good memories at my grandmas.
1.25 speed
Bobby DeLuna what’s so special about that lol
@@insaneclownhoty When played at that speed, it sounds the way it was on-air.
Bebop
Go custom speed and 1.15 sounds perfect!
@@joe5852003 Actually, after 2003 it was played at that speed.
best theme EVER--glad they incorporated it into The Tonight Show theme.
Oh man

Exactly! I hope the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien lasts forever!
LOVE the picture and he looks awsome with a beard. Oh Conan! We love you!
The memories...
HELPING NASHVILLE I swear lol sleeping through jay and waking up hearing this. Miss the simpler times
For someone who grew up in the 90s, I can never emphasise how important this piece of music is for my culture..
Good luck on TBS, Coco. And seeing your best lead-in possibility are The Office reruns, you're gonna need a lot of it.

Conan was never the same after he left Late Night
Love his beard.
Theme is so jazzy and cool.
I heard both songs like a thousands times before realizing this sounds a lot like a faster version of Miles Davis' "So What"
FYI: this music was composed by Howard Shore, the same guy who did the outstanding The Lord of The Rings trilogy musicsoundtrack. Mind blown yet?
Boom!
My treat staying up late on Friday nights.
Can't believe this was written by Howard Shore. The guy who wrote Conan's theme later wrote LOTR... Damn. No wonder it's catchy.
Lurie composed it with Howard Shore. It was a partnership
@@softhausstudio Actually Shore altered Lurie's composition without consent and then it was used by Conan without giving Lurie any credit. Luckily for Lurie, after being told by Conan's lawyer that he had no recourse, he had copyrighted his music and was eventually awarded a huge payout.
This and Johnny’s Theme are the best theme’s in late night comedy history.
Definitely. Conan's theme gets you hype for the show. When Joel yells CONAN OBRIEN! I already had a Kool-aid smile plastered on my face.

@officialAmpersand Obviously a dedicated fan like myself from the '90's.
I once saw an episode of "Late Night..." where Max Weinberg and the 7 did the theme completely a capella. They were making the instrument sounds with only their mouths. I have tried repeatedly to show my girlfriend, but I am unable to find it anywhere. Please help.
Did you find it
@Formal Doge did I find IT?
did you find it
Did you find it
Still waiting 😐
The way Joel said “New York” over this theme got me fired up back in the day.
Flames! Beautiful Flames!
RIP Joel Goddard
…Joel’s still alive
I like this theme better than the TBS theme.
Real version needs to be played at 1.25 speed :)
i didnt touch the theme at all. i think it might be from his early years on the show...prolly mid to late 90s is my guess
max weing and the max weinberg 7,the best band i have ever heard for late night,i miss max weinberg.
Wish i could hear this as the original john lurie version, without all the added corporate flair
I liked Jay Leno show more, but can’t even recall the theme.
This is much better
how do i make this my ringtone?
@Maxemac I was under the impression that was just stock music. I don't think that was a variation of the theme at all, just a piece of music that was done in a similar style, and same types of instruments.
KEEP COOL MA BABIES!!!!!
This 'more slower' version was used at Conan's Run as Host of Tonight Show.
For the first couple of years.
Makes me think of isotope but big band and much more upbeat
Created by John Lurie from the Lounge Lizards.
And Howard Shore, who would later write the music for the Lord of the Rings movies.
very good
@Fuzunga me too!...i grew up with this theme!!!!
So would I.
We have to do all we can to make sure he beats Leno in the ratings when he returns!
When you watch Late Night
Do you think this theme will appear on Conan's new TBS show? Or does NBC own the rights to the song?
I still love the Johnny Carson theme more, but this easily goes in with my favs.
Go COCO and screw you NBC!
:P
john lurie wrote it
The Tonight Show used that same theme in 2009 and 2010.
After watching the first episode, I now know why it was cut short. It went on *way* too long!
didnt John Lurie help write this?
John Lurie
@SuperCoCoLuv I liked the end of the show song the best.
Me too, NBC copyrighted this theme.
where can i get this?
Is it just me or is this slower?
I like this theme song so much better than the new one he's using. The new one just isn't very catchy.
I'm kinda sad the new song is different.
I prefer the other Conan theme better.
This is really weird jazz
@kowalski4ever earlier seasons have it slow like this
It's the 1993 theme noob. It was this slow.
Little slow...
@vequintana Thanks! I like the more up-tempo version better...
I'm guessing the reason they don't use this on "Conan" might be out of respect for Max Weinberg, considering he wrote this theme.
Why did you slow down the tempo noobert?
That bass line brings me back to my 20s every single time...thanks Coco!!
Jerma. Super Monkey Ball
I don't know why, but this is what the 90s sounds like to me.
