Yaesu FT5D: Bluetooth Setup and Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- The Yaesu FT5D boasts Bluetooth connectivity, but is it worth it? In this video, I’ll show you how to setup Bluetooth on your Yaesu FT5DR. #YaesuFT5D #YaesuFT5DR #HamRadio
It’s also important to note that I was unable to pair this radio via my Tesla or Subaru Bluetooth. It wouldn't even connect. So if you're hoping to use it in your car, think again.

I had the same experience on my FT3DR with both my Bose headset and the headset sold by Yaesu. Thanks, Matt.
What a shame, I'd have upgraded in an instant from the FT3D had they fixed that issue. What you describe is my exact experience with the 3D. Thanks for the video.
I have a FTM-300DR and it’s perfect for me. I am using the SSM-BT10 Bluetooth.
Disappointed to learn this. Have a newly acquired FT5DR and really liking it. Was wondering about buying the Yaesu bluetooth for hiking with the radio. Sounds like a speaker mic clipped at the shoulder is the better option.
Thanks for the review. I've been waiting for a Fusion HT I can pair (Bluetooth) with my hearing aids. I'll continue to wait.
I had the same experience with my Bose headphones
Yes I totally agree. I get the same hissing and popping and I’m using the official Yaesu SSM-BT10 ear bud. And it is practically unusable as you stated. What a shame. Don’t get me wrong I love Yaesu gear, but the Bluetooth experience on the FT5D is total crap!
Not shocked. It's not great between the FTM-300 and SSM-BT10 either.
Finally got my FT5 & got around to trying it with Yaesu's recommended SSM-BT10.
Wow.
I mean, the FTM300 tosses a pop or squiggle randomly here and there, but I didn't find it off-putting in the car, where there's also almost always road noise. It at least allowed me to get the RX volume high enough to be intelligible over the road noise.
But with the FT5, I had both the HT's volume AND the earbud's volume at max, and it was hard to hear RX audio over the sound of a floor stand fan on low. And the random pops & squiggles are far, far worse than with the 300. Uff-da.
When I put the FT5D on my waist, the Bluetooth audio becomes noisy and the connection may be lost.
On my test. If your press the “ptt” on the headset, it will mute the mic on the FT5. If your press the PTT on radio both mic’s are active. Using bh-m20 headset
Thanks for letting me know it works with that particular headset.
@@K0LWC The popping sound and range makes it unusable. My 878 works flawlessly with this BH-M20 headset.
@@THENAVYSPARKY Does the 878 support TX with the button on the headset or do you have to use the dedicated PTT -button?!
@@majmuneeeee no it will not. You have to use the dedicated PTT
Yeah i see what you mean by the crap bluetooth, range is crap as well, 1 question i have for you is how did you get the blue colour for the top and red for the bottom on the display, i can only get the active band to display a colour while the other band is gray
Thanks, MIck
Really appreciate this, won't ask about Bluetooth PTT then - I'll get an Anytone instead.
I believe the popping and hissing noise you are hearing is the radio writing to the micro sd card. Try removing the card and I would be willing to bet your problem is solved.
It was fun testing with you. Hopefully, someone knows how to disable the internal mic while using bluetooth. I was at HRO in Phoenix a few days ago, the staff there were unaware of the issue; curious if others reproduce the problems.
I want to know if I’m the only one. Thanks for all your help during the testing!
@@K0LWC For what it's worth, the dual-mic thing appears to also be true when using the Yaesu BT earbud with the FTM-300. I thought that seemed odd.
Still, I like having the BT option. Allows me to "keep an ear" on a conversation while I'm pumping gas. Or to have louder radio in my ear while my wife is not interested. The other noises going on when driving (especially at highway speed) are enough that the popping is no longer noticeable to me. And this is what I think they did - minimal effort, minimal cost, "good enough" for the most typical use, by darned near deaf old guys.
Anytone 878 + Aftershokz for the win
I had this pumping noise on my vx8. The problem was the gps. I dont have the ft5d but try to deactivate gps
Thank's
I get the same problem with corded audio. While it's unacceptible if this is the case with bluetooth, it is absolutely incomprehensible that it's happening corded.
thanks, fantastic video 73 from kb2uew
Interesting perspective on the Anytone Bluetooth. I have Anyone 578 & 878, Yaesu FT-3 & FT-5. And I would rate them all equally useless!
Wow((((((
the bluetooth option of this radio.. what does it really work with.. i tried many things and can say. o they did not work with the bluetooth.. i was in short disapointed with the bluetooth feature of this radio.. it is too fussy about what and what it can be used with.properly.
It’s pretty crappy. Bummed they didn’t touch it from the FT3D.
I’m just going to go by the statement KOLWC had about the mowing. Mowers are known for injecting spark plug noise which is typically a popping noise as he states. Is it possible it would be better in the house? Just asking….
No. I experienced the same thing without mowing both inside the house and doing yard work outside. Other owners are hearing the same thing. Not sure what specific type of BT being use here but it’s garbage.
@K0LWC ok thanks. You only mentioned mowing with it so that is why I commented. 73, Scott
Thanks. I was about to research and order a bluetooth device for my ft5. After watching this, not. I'll stick with the shoulder mic and an ear piece.
2:00 is the headline here
BT is garbage on the FT3 and on the FT5 too, it seems.
Make a shortwave test. Thanks
Damn, I was hoping this was an issue with my Bluetooth headset in my motorcycle helmet. Sounds like a turntable needle on a dusty record in my helmet.
No popping at all with my headset. I use a generic brand. If you don’t want to pull microphone from both the device and the radio turn mic gain down. I’m not understanding the unstable you are taking about. I get no delay. My radio works flawlessly. I would suggest you return it for a newer version. Best handheld I have ever had.
What brand and model do you have?
well this was a really nasty comment to make if you are not willing to share what Bluetooth headset you had luck with
@@dusopn He was lying
Has anyone had success with paring it to the vehicle? As the FT3DR was terrible with paring with basically anything.
Get ready for the same experience.
@@K0LWC Thank you very much sir! Might be looking into the ICOM ID-52A. Yaesu needs to get with the times. Lol
Thanks again!
BT of FT5D is really unusable. Proper working distance with SSM-BT10 not even to the belt! Whereas with Samsung GSM it works >10 Meter! Very disappointing!
All of these issues should be fixable with a firmware update....at least I hope so.....
For a radio in this price range, if you have a feature, it should work properly. I'm curious if anyone has raised this with Yaesu support.
Its disappointing to say the least.
lol “ hot garbage!” I’ll stick with icom or Kenwood.
Mod it
🥵 🗑 , 😂
Maybe you don't need to be fucking around with a radio while you're driving your Tesla.
I don’t drive my Tesla, it drives for me. 😂
I really wished I didn't have to say it, but the bluetooth, and even headphone audio, are dog crap. Tons of noise, even under squelch, and horrible on receive audio quality. If I we're to quantify it, 50% of the quality of the built-in speaker which seems decent.
