    I used to sharpen all my army buddies knives and that micro bevel always helped them last a lot longer between sharpenings.

    I took the micro bevel off my Mora Companion HD in carbon, erroneously thinking it would make it better. It does make for a finer edge, but it sure doesn't last as long. Was searching UA-cam on the topic, and found your video. Glad I stopped by. Thanks, and take care.

    The high pitched sound of the blade hitting that wood at the beginning made me flinch - that stuff is HARD. Hell of a test!

    Your functional bush crafting knives are beautiful in every way, and your creation of a micro bevel is an invaluable tip. Thank-you so much, and I look forward to owning one of your blades when they become available again.

    I own quite a few different knife makers knives and honoured also to own a Jacklore Classic. I can safely say that the Jacklore knives are the sharpest and most brilliant all round bushcraft knife you could ever own. I cannot big Jacklore up enough. The science and craftsmanship that Sandy has applied to his products is truly AMAZING.....

    That was some abuse. it stood up well to the test, but other than maybe battoning. I'd only usually use mine for feather sticking. wood carving tasks etc...saw you put the bevel on it and cringed lol ...horses for courses as they say. I'm like you Sandy...prefer a Scandi grind any day...and find it therapeutic sharpening mine. Best wishes - Steve

    Hi Sandy,
    You suggested a micro bevel to me some time ago. I was always afraid to try it in case I messed up my Jacklore.
    Now that you have demonstrated it I think I'll give it a go.
    Many thanks,
    Kevin

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  8 років тому

      Hi Kevin, It will transform the edge, the slight change in apex angle will really increase the edge strength and also retention so if you should run against bone there will be much less chance of damage. The micro bevel needs to be only minimal.

    Mr Sandy! you were mean to that poor little knife blade! It did however handle all of it with ease! :-D and that is why I want one of YOUR knives! I know there are other fine knife makers in the UK, that put just as much care and attention into each blade they make. Yours were the first hand made custom knives that I had seen (OK! It was via UA-cam, but still!) and when I found out WHERE in the UK you are based, I HAVE to get one, or two! I was born not far from you at the RAF Hospital where my dad was serving in the Air Force back in the day. So for me there is a little nostalgia there as well. So, I do hope to buy a "Classic" and a "Wasp" from you, I know I will miss out on any you make available for the next month or two as I HAVE to rebuild my wife's PC as her died over a year ago, then she was using my laptop and that just up and DIED! so she is sharing mine now, which is not the most convenient set-up!
    Any way, loved the video, and Have a good one! :-) Kev B.

    1) An Axe is for chopping.
    2) The thing people call a Micro Bevel on a Mora knife is actually from the swarf removal tool cleaning the edge during production. And contrary to popular belief, Mora knives don't come razor sharp.
    3) A Scandinavian grind is the cheapest and fastest way to put an adequate edge on a piece of steel.

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  8 років тому +5

      Hi Ade,
      Thanks for your comment but I have to disagree with you quite strongly on the comment about the Scandinavian or Norwegian grind. It is a grind that is specific for the purpose of cutting and carving wood. As such it excels and there is no other in my opinion thats is as effective as the scandi for that particular purpose.
      For food and game the Scandi can be pressed to service but it is not the best. Perhaps a convex, flat or hollow is better there. It's horses for courses and your comment was sweeping . True in some aspects, but completely wrong in others!

    • @adelarsen9776
      @adelarsen9776 8 років тому

      Jackloreknives I never said there was anything wrong with a scandi grind.
      Many of my knives are scandi grind and they are fine.
      I was simply stating for the audience that some folk think that scandi is the be all and end all of knife grinds, when it is not.
      Horses for courses.
      Outdoors men carry half a dozen knives, all for different purposes.
      My fish filleting knife is hollow ground, my stockman pocket knife is flat ground, my mora 510 is scandi, my parang is convex. My Glock knife is convex and hollow. Each have their use.
      So, Sandy, there is no argument - we are on the same page. I just hope that people can understand what I write.
      Some people think that Nordic boreal forest is the home of all things good when there is lots of countries with good kit and ideas.
      We, the Vikings, are not Gods of Bushcraft and I wish people would stop thinking that.
      Again, I repeat - Mora knives are not 2ndry bevel ground, there is a finishing tool that removes swarf off the edge.
      And again I repeat and stand by : A scandi edge is an adequate and efficient method for putting a satisfactory edge on a blade.
      NB : I never said they were no good. I love sharpening all mine.
      My strongest point I wish to make is that a knife is a knife. It's not an axe.
      I believe in being prepared and using the right tool for the job. Other people should copy my example before they follow all the internet experts out there and just try to have 1 knife for everything that includes chopping.
      Knives are for cutting, slicing, dicing, pearing and slitting.
      Axes are for chopping.
      What do you think ?
      I am on your side and have no argument with you. :-)

    • @MrKBartlett
      @MrKBartlett 8 років тому +1

      Both my Mora knives were extremely sharp out of the box! And whilst being one of the lowest priced knives out there they can take a lot of misuse and abuse, including battening if careful! Have a good one! :-) Kev B.

    • @adelarsen9776
      @adelarsen9776 8 років тому

      Kev B Mora's are excellent quality Sandvik steel. They also come very sharp.
      My most used knife which goes with me each time I travel between the Nordics and Australian forests is my KJ Eriksson Mora 2mm Carbon steel knife.
      They really are fantastic quality the old Mora's.
      Congratulations on having Mora fishing knives, you have quality.

      3 is probably right for barstock, thinking about it. My mora is the sharpest knife I've ever held, as a young adult who grew up in the suburbs and can't sharpen a knife for shit.

    Nice to see a knife being put through its paces and come out smiling...if you want to get rid of that old abused knife Sandy, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands! No need to do anything more to it, I have some native rimu for a handle lying around from a house renovation.

      It may have looked old and abused but the edge was as good as new. I have fitted it with a lovely piece of stabilised walnut root and black liners.

    I just received a Ahti leuku 180 from Finland, and it seems it does have a small micro bevel on it, so im a bit confused as to how to sharpen it, if I use a spyderco sharpmaker it will have a bigger microbevel 20 degrees per side, if I use a water stone it will become a slightly convexed edge. Should I sharpen it as a true scandy grind and then use a spyderco sharpening rod to get a small micro bevel? Your video helped a lot.

  • @paramidge8935

    I remember coming across some wood as hard as bloody iron in S.Island new Zealand - dry as a bone by the river - we wanted a fire - I had a go at it and it took about three minutes constant drumming at it to go through. We ended up just feeding the stuff lengthways as it burned (it burned hot and made good cooking coals). Would a 20 degree micro bevel make sense on a 3.5mm thick heavier bush crafter like a caastrom no10?

    Interesting test, is there a way to apply a micro bevel without a ceramic rod, maybe with just a strop?

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  8 років тому

      Hi Gary,
      Over time your strop will round over the cutting edge creating a kind of secondary convex micro bevel. The ceramic rod just does it quicker and keeps the micro bevel flatter. Ray Mears runs his knife across the door window of his landrover. I hasten to add though that the Micro bevel is really tiny and can easily be sharpened out to restore the flat grind. But even though it is a tiny micro, it will strengthen the edge several fold and require less sharpening and you will still have very good cutting power. I am not such a fan of heavier micro bevels as they just don't seem to be quite as sharp as a Scandi.

    • @TacBlades

      Jackloreknives thanks for that, thoes ceramic rods are a lot cheaper than i thought they would be :)

    hello Sandy, was wondering what your intervals are for sharpening/maintaining your micro beveled edges? Do you shape up the edge after a lot of abuse or every time after using? I plan to use a ceramic rod to put a micro bevel on my scandi.

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  7 років тому +1

      Hi Cara,
      The edge seems to hold up well with only stropping required. After prolonged use the will need to be resharpened but I have had folk tell me the knives have stayed sharp for months with just stropping and that is on normal scandis. But bear in mind that stropping will eventually slightly convex an edge anyway.
      The ceramic rod is good for putting on the smallest of micros which is all you need to toughen up the edge.

    Hi Sandy, you must be psychic! I made a scandi grind knife from a kit my son gave to me as a present 2 years ago and the edge is great, I also have a Mora as a general tool for hunting. The Mora lost it's edge the other day and it took ages to get it back using water stones. I was toying with a micro bevel but persevered with keeping the scandi edge and it is now ok. Will a micro bevel work on one of these cheap and cheerful knives? Also, if you strop a micro bevel do you follow the micro bevel or the Scandi grind edge? Do keep these videos coming as they are great to watch. I look forward to your reply. ATB.

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  8 років тому +2

      Hi Geoff,
      Yes you can apply a micro bevel to a Mora. To keep it sharp just touch up the micro bevel with a strop of ceramic stone trying to follow the micro bevel. I would only apply the tiniest of Micro bevels though because there may come a time when you want to revert to scandi, or to just thin the old Scandi grind back a bit, so with use you are going to need to sharpen back the old grind angle to maintain the geometry. The plus side is that the Micro bevel will take longer to go dull and therefore the knife will need less sharpening and will therefore last longer.
      Hope that is clear. I am not good at explaining things:)
